Thank you all for participating in nominating character attributes for Sam, Dean, Bobby, and Cas. You came up with a lot of great descriptions, and I'll be launching the first individual character poll tomorrow.
For those who missed the previous post, what we're doing is gathering a collection of fan-nominated adjectives or phrases that best describe the four SPN characters, and then setting up polls to vote on the top 20 nominated selections for each characters. With all of the discussion on what is "out of character," this exercise is intended to see on how most fans perceive these characters and let fans rank those character traits by relevance.
The nominations are now in, but I have a few clean-up activities before we move forward. First, with both Sam and Dean, all of the attributes that got three or more nominations made the list to be in the poll, but I have a few remaining slots for each character, with too many attributes that got two votes to fit the number of open slots. So I'm posting a couple of polls to select the remaining attributes. These are not the top nominated choices - only the ones that are on the borderline of making it into the poll. With Cas, there were exactly 20 choices that got two or more votes, and with Bobby there were 18 choices that got two or more votes. I'm going to run Bobby's poll with just 18 choices rather than 20.
So vote for one in each of the following polls. These two polls will only be open for 24 hours so that we can quickly move on to the first big character poll.
I made some judgment calls to combine certain terms that were almost identical in meaning. I've listed them below. If you have strong objections to my decisions, please post your thoughts below.
Sam:
Empathetic/sympathetic
Issues with control and power and feeling deprived of those things for much of his life/ Control issues
Smart/Intelligent/brainy
Strength/strong
Dean:
Guilt-ridden/guilt complex
Insecure/self-doubting
Selfless/self-sacrificing
Bobby:
Fatherly/paternal

Hi everyone, thanks again for the your participation in the nomination phase. We've got really good lists of personality traits for each of the characters, and it should be fun ranking those descriptions in the following weeks. I thought I'd start with Sam tomorrow, Dean the following weekend, Cas the weekend after than, and then last but not least, Bobby.

ReplyDeleteDean=selfless Sam=questioning, that is why he and John butted heads all the time. I have a son like that, always WHY. LOL For me questioning and control issues go together, he would buck John when he was told to do something, again it was WHY. I do love Sam.
ReplyDeleteCas's big poll is scheduled for the weekend of December 8-9. These two aren't the main character polls. Sam and Dean got more attributes nominated than Cas and Bobby, so I ended up with 27 words (with two or more votes) to fill 20 slots with Sam and 26 words to fill 20 slots with Dean. These polls will decide which words don't make it into the main polls.
ReplyDeleteWith Cas we got 20 words with at least two nominations to fill 20 slots. I figure Cas worked his Angel mojo to make it come out perfectly. Bobby got 18 words to fill 20 slots. I decided to run the Bobby poll with just the 18 words.

Two best words to describe each of them. Of course other words apply from those lists, but those are the top ones.
Interesting comment about questioning and control issues. Those two character traits aren't Sam's most noble, but I think they made him a more relatable and interesting character in the early seasons. They are also the traits I've been most missing in the past couple of seasons and the traits of his that I most closely identify with. ;-)
ReplyDeleteI think Sam is a questioning person. I think I always heard him saying why why ad why to everyone, especially to Dean.
ReplyDeleteand Dean... well... even Sam said on "playthings" episode, Dean is a bossy (and short, Lol). Agree. HE always ask Sam to do whatever he wants. okay, not always but most of time.why? because he said so.LoL

.WHERE EXACTLY THIS POLL VOTING ENDED...???..i am still confuse about SAM...caring THING..someone could explain about WHAT he is caring during all season something constant like DEAN,.heroic,.selfless,.stubborn all things are always there we saw it and felt it .but sam is always inside a tornado .follow destruction and pain try to find something to hold on but FAIL VERY HARD AND DEEP

ReplyDeleteI went with Sam as "caring", and I struggled between "selfless" and "stubborn" with Dean... I ultimately chose selfless since he tends to look out for others before thinking of himself.
ReplyDeleteSam is empathic/Sympathetic? I see you have painted Sam as the best of the best while barely sparing Dean any kind of good qualities. But then, I'm not surprised considering your biased toward Sam. Sam is caring only with those he can relate to, and I've yet to see him give his brother the same consideration he's given others, and that includes Ruby.
ReplyDeleteThe attributes were all nominated by fans - a combination of Sam, Dean, Cas, and Bobby fans. The nomination thread is here: http://www.spoilertv.com/2012/11/supernatural-will-real-sam-and-dean.html. Nominations were open for over five days, so both Sam and Dean fans had plenty of time get their votes in. The attributes that made it into the final polls were selected based on the number of nominations. All attributes that got three or more nominations were included. The remaining slots were filled with the winners of these two polls, comprised of attributes with only two nominations. The polls in this thread are only qualifying polls and do not include the top nominated characteristics. They are not the main polls.
