It was awful. Bradley demonstrated some wooden acting in his scenes with Gwen, Angel is smirkgana#2, alludes to harassment of both Morgana and Aithusa are not something I'd want my children to watch.
Merlin serves BOTH Arthur and Gwen? I'm so disappointed in Gwen's character - she quickly forgot her former station and enjoys all the pleasures of having money now.
The writers soent four episodes of the last season ever on a ridiculous, boring and offensive storyline. If the show hasn't been cancelled already, I'd make a petition to BBC to do so.
I agree to a certain extent about Bradley, at times this year he just doesn't seem to be enjoying it much as previously. Can't agree with the rest of your thoughts though, I think Angel is one of the best baddie the show has ever had. And, you do know that this isn't a show for children surely??
Just missed Arthur&Merlin together. But how funny was Arthur constantly saying "where is Merlin" and "I want Merlin back". I honestly laughed so hard when Gaius&Arthur couldn't BOTH figure out how to put on this one shirt;) Wow, Arthur has a lot of clothes and he has absolutely no idea where any of his things are! That's just comedy gold!
But... going back to the episode.
Gwen is so evil right now, it scares me how good she is at being evil! Much worse than Morgana. Also the hard part is where you realise her plans may even work! I mean, the knights TRUST her. She could actually have their support after king's death. Their and the people in Camelot. That's something even Morgana couldn't have done!
Also, as a fan of the royal couple I just went "argh" several times. There were so many great scenes. And all of them fake! Because of Gwen! Damn! Arthur was so adorable with her! These two would be so cute if it wasn't for this "curse"!
Plus, I knew poor boy is going to die the second he decided to help Merlin. That's a shame! But... I also guessed who's gonna be shot by the arrow and I cheered there! He had it coming! I mean, when he was talking about Morgana and Aithusa he just... made me sick. I wouldn't wish something so cruel to ANYONE. Especially, Morgana.
That's all for now. Still processing everything. Next week looks stunning though! So much going on! And it looks like Merlin is working WITH Arthur to save Gwen! Finally! It only took 5 seasons to do sth like that!
I don't know, I wouldn't say that he ever had much chemistry with Angel. But in today's episode it just wasn't natural.
Okay, I admit that I got carried away, but I cannot not ask: how is the show being promoted as a 'family show' and 'Doctor Who's replacement' is not a show for children to watch?
I've never hated Morgana like in this ep. How could she do that to Merlin?!! I hated seeing him so helpless, and I'm sorry, but I didn't feel any sadness for the fake druid boy, even if he had the right intention in the end.
I thought we'd see some new flashbacks of Morgana's imprisonment, but I guess that's the only thing they shot? Too bad, that would've been interesting, or maybe seeing how she escaped.
It's funny that we've seen Arthur change shirts lots of times, and he couldn't do it now, but I did still laugh, he's useless without the people around him.
And poor Merlin, missing because of a girl...if only...
I'm glad next week is the end of Smirkana 2.0 (and Agravaine 2.0), it'll be interesting to see how they break the "spell", would it be love or magic?
And is Aithusa back? Control your dragons Merlin!!
It hasn't been that show since S3 when Shine took it over from the BBC instead of it being cancelled. They turned it into a more adult show, hence it being on later at night than Who which is on a tea time and not 8pm+ in the evening :)
I feel I am repeating myself recently - another great episode as such. There was a lot of suspense and it is a shame that the Sarrum got killed off so quickly. He was a brilliant baddie. He was even scary when he smiled. I loved Colin as usual and thought that evil Gwen was even better this time. But then, in the big scheme of things - none of the major story arcs were moved forward, yet again. This episode (like the last one) could have happened one or teo seasons ago. I felt extremely awkward about seeing Merlin serving Arthur and Gwen their dinner, and even worse when Gwen ordered him to organize her a hot bath. Arthur made one really condescending remark about him yet again (could not detect any humour or banterism in there - but maybe I will on a second viewing...) The Arthur / Gaius comedy scene also sat oddly with me - although my daughter thought it was very funny. On the whole, a lot of suspense and good drama - ultimately leading nowhere.
Oh, I haven't seen that. Most interviews I've seen they talk about it getting darker and more for the people who have gotten older with the show rather than kids.
It left me with that feeling also, it was a bit of a filler episode that has eaten up time that I'd rather see spent on other things.. The sarrum was definitely the highlight for me too, chilling performance!
LOl. I imagine we see what we want because I thought they were so hot that I wondered if they were acting. But then I'm not jealous of a televised character.
Pretty much agree but Gwen really is acting as Gwen when with Arthur, so the playful loving nature of the relationship is real. It's just not real right now..
Nooo. I'm suggesting you resent Gwen. The bitterness is dripping from your comments. Angel has been the best villain in 5 Series of Merlin. Her acting has be skillfully nuanced and layered sans the smirking that was Katie was capable of. Imagine a servant serving the Queen, of course he serves them both. Until he's elevated what more would you expect, don't answer, I know why you are galled. Really you are disappointed in Gwen's character are you saying she's forgotten her place? LOL. That she's uppity? Ah, again the words say what you can't find the courage to actually write. The problems with your ire is two fold. 1st, she's the QUEEN, she could roll like that, but she didn't. Not until she came under Morgana's influence. Which of course is the 2nd thing you seem to have forgotten. Oh and your disgust at Bradley touching, caressing, holding Angel to him...was noted as well. If it were wooden as you proclaimed, you wouldn't have to worry about the poor kiddies. LOL.
Your use of capslock is unnecessary. Other than that, I'm not even going to respond to a lot of words making very little sense which your post consists of.
I feel it is still ashow for kids. My two boys love it and they are 5 and 8 and I do not thnk there is anything in Merlin I would not watch them to watch, and no I am not one of those mums who lets them watch anythicaz74ng, as I do not even let them watch some PG rated stuff, but I feel Merlin has not got anything they should not see. As to the harrasment of Morgana and the dragon, well my two boys just said how nasty it was of him to keep the dragon in a small place and also morgana, even though she is evil. Children understand thing differently to us. My two watch all the series of Merlin over and over again as it is one of their favourite programmes.
This episode was interesting as all other episodes of the season were but some things become more and more annoying. How come after so many years of Merlin and Arthur's friendship, Arthur still treats Merlin like that? He has never actually witnessed Merlin going to a tavern or at least expressing his desire to go. Yet he thinks Merlin went. Arthur obviously values Merlin, we have seen him do so but in the same time it seems like Gwen and all other people make Arthur act like a fool. Arthur really should grow up and face his I-can't-express-my-feelings issue. It goes along with Arthur not being able to see magic when it's under his nose. Or that ridiculous dressing moment. He is a king, for god's sake. Gwen's smirks bored me a little. Too obvious, too evil, not interesting enough. I understand it's a show but how easier it would be to stab Arthur while he sleeps and make everyone think it was Merlin or something. As for Arthur and Gwen's marriage. The first half of the season Arthur was running away from the castle at every opportunity. He sat unmoving while she kissed him on his forehead or kissed her on the forehead himself saying words more suited for an old couple or political marriage. He didn't tell her his plans or thoughts and she complained about it as well. Then Gwen becomes evil and acts even more loving and interested in Arthur and suddenly Arthur is interested in her. He starts telling her stuff. (Again hugging in front of Merlin was awkward). Their relationship seem kinda dysfunctional. Why the sudden change.
And why couldn't Merlin tell the truth about his journey. There is no danger in saying he was nearly killed by Morgana.
Plus the knights sure were pretty slow tonight....I mean, if Merlin hadn't kill the shooter, he would be lonnnggg LOONNGGGGG gone. he had the time to die, time for Merlin to get up, watch the scene, return to the boy and see the boy died...and still no guards anywhere near.
'' But how funny was Arthur constantly saying "where is Merlin" and "I want Merlin back"''
:) I loved it too, it also was kind of cute.
But I didn't like after how Arthur seemed more interested in ''''the girl''''' than the fact that Merlin was limping. If I was Merlin I would twist the truth to tell the important part. I mean, even without involving Gwen (or the boy's betray) or saying that Gwen is lying, nothing's stopping Merlin from saying that in the wood he got attacked by Morganna and the boy saved him
Yeah, we noticed that too! There was nobody round at all although it was pretty clear where the shot came from. Another example of Camelot's guards acting useless!
I agree with you in many points! The tavern story has really run its course - come on Arthur - surely you know Merlin better than that! At least he NOTICED that Merlin was limping and asked why - the answer was never given. Why? And as for Arthur not being able to dress alone at all - I find that very hard to believe. I think the way they showed the Gwen and Arthur relationship was deliberate. - Arthur all in love and Gwen being nice on the surface but avoiding him at the same time. She made a good job of avoiding kissing and hugging him throughout the episode. Surely that alone should make Arthur suspicious that something is not quite right!?
LOL. Yeah, it was clear the boy was a goner - not only did he help Merlin, they also had some nice bonding moments together. When he found out about the magic ... now that was the deciding blow. :)
I liked it overoll...still hating the whole evil!Gwen thing. Glad it's gonna be over in the next episode. My poor Merlin :'( seriously this show is so heartbreaking.
I hated him serving Arthur and Gwen at the end....whyyyyyyyyy!!!! he is their best friend!!!! :'( he should be eating with them as the royal court adviser. My two favourite characters against each other :'''''''( why?! this show will be the death of me. I loved all the arwen moments, mostly because I knew how pressed the fandom will be about them bahahahahaha.
This show depresses me more and more with each passing episode. This entire Gwen arc is nothing but filler, and such a waste for what will most likely be the final season. We don't see any development of the characters - ACTUAL development.
We see Merlin utterly miserable in his role now, whereas before he would talk about his and Arthur's destiny and his belief that Arthur would bring about a golden age, where magic was once more accepted, we now see Merlin distant, sire this and my lord that (he rarely calls Arthur by name anymore and it is disconcerting to see him so cut off from his supposed best friend). We see Merlin talk about Arthur becoming this supposed great king but no longer does he talk about their combined destiny, no longer does he mention Arthur eventually accepting magic.
Unfortunately, it seems The Disir shows what Merlin actually believes now, that magic has no place in Camelot - that it never will, that he doesn't. He's just "doing his job" now, whereas before he protected Arthur because the dragon promised that he and Arthur together would unite Albion, bring peace, bring back magic. With only five episodes left, we are no closer to that destiny than we were in season one, in fact we are even farther away from that destiny now than in the beginning.
I expect Camlann to be the final episode, and to be honest, whereas before I might have believed that Arthur's death would utterly break Merlin, the disconnect now, the distance, the utter misery that is Merlin's constant state and the fact that even after TEN YEARS, the most Arthur appreciates Merlin for is his helping him dress and drawing a bath, when Arthur dies now, I suspect Merlin will be fine. In fact, I choose to believe that once Arthur dies, Merlin will actually get to try and find happiness in his own life that he was never permitted to while shackled to his "destiny". Ten years living subjugated and treated like absolute crap, hiding who he REALLY is from the man who, until this season, I believed wholeheartedly was his BEST friend...
Arthur is not even remotely close to this great king he's supposed to be. At best, he's slightly better than Uthur. He's willing to ally himself with the most despicable of men (the Sarrum), and that, to me, does not make a great king. We never once see anyone upset either, that Arthur is willing to ally Camelot with this man who takes pleasure in making others suffer, who is, by all we've seen untrustworthy and quite frankly even worse than Uthur ever was. Arthur was supposed to take us AWAY from Uthur's reign, away from the unforgiving murders of innocent people, not align himself with a man that does worse than Uthur could have dreamt of. At least Uthur simply killed these people and didn't spend years torturing them for his own amusement.
I'm so disappointed where this show has gone. So disappointed that they've wasted an entire season and never moved the characters forward AT ALL. So disappointed that in the end, they're going to kill Arthur before he even sees this supposed golden age. So disappointed that they constantly think it's funny to point out how ALONE Merlin is, how miserable he is, and how NO ONE cares about him until they actually need him and then they reward his loyalty with insults.
I do agree with your main point that NOTHING happens in the main story line yet again. I cannot believe how much time has been wasted with the last two (albeit enjoyable)episodes. The main story arcs have been completely neglected. And you are right - it seems that Merlin has given up on the shared destiny idea. 'I do my job' he said this time. 'I have learned to do my duty' he said a couple of eps ago, and he seems overwhelmed by the feeling that he can do nothing to prevent of what is surely meant to happen (Arthur's death). Yet again, is he not supposed to be more powerful than Morgana? It is reallya sad state of affairs and I cannot see how any of this can be redeemed in the short time there is left.
I find it very frustrating that, YES, Merlin IS supposed to be more powerful than Morgana (is in fact supposed to be the most powerful warlock alive!) and yet, time and time again we see MORGANA the one using her magic, and gaining the upper hand on Merlin. (>.<)
I honestly don't see it being redeemed at all. :( The writers have said that they love the idea that this legend FAILS, and I can't see them doing anything but making everything Merlin has sacrificed for Arthur come to naught. *sigh* I hope I'm wrong, but the things the writers have said over the seasons lead me to believe that they think it's far more interesting to see Merlin miserable, to see Arthur die, to see Merlin fail (and from what we've seen this season, it seems they're even going so far as to make it seem like MERLIN is the reason Arthur never actually brings magic back, or becomes this great king).
I kind of really hate that they're willing to twist the legends to suit their needs (like killing Lancelot off not once, but TWICE, because heaven forbid he lived - since Angel and Santiago had about a million times more chemistry than Bradley and Angel), and yet ignoring things from the legend like the fact that King Arthur ALWAYS knew about Merlin's magic. It's all just so frustrating, because this show could have been AMAZING if they'd just stop reusing the same tired old storylines and revealed Merlin's magic AGES ago. :(
I expected Merlin to answer Arthur's questions. It was disappointing that he didn't. Actually, I don't think Gwen's efforts in avoiding kissing would make Arthur suspicious. He hasn't tried to kiss her in the first half of the season. It just doesn't make sense why his behaviour towards her changed so much. Perhaps he was afraid he would loose her so now he pays more attention to her than before. That's the only reason I can think of. What could make him suspicious is Gwen's words about Merlin and a girl. Arthur knows Merlin is a private person but even he knows he had no time to find a girl who lives outside of Camelot. And I understand why he wouldn't tell Arthur if it was true, Arthur's mocking is unpleasant to hear. But also him and Arthur are good friends now. Not like before. But then Merlin had to ask Arthur to "trust [him] just this once" and Arthur didn't look thrilled. In my opinion, Merlin had to tell Arthur he got almost killed by Morgana so Arthur would take him seriously. This is not fair to Merlin. There is no advantage in pretending to be useless anymore.
I couldn't have said it better. It's a shame that a show with a great initial premise, and for me with great character development in S1 and S2, started to go downhill in S3, and entered this loop of the same and tiresome plotline almost every episode and series. If I'm being honest, and for what I've read in different forums I'm not alone, the main reason I still watch the show is the cast. I don't think the show would be this popular if it wasn't for the talented actors and their performances. I used to enjoy the stories, but now, I get frustrated for such a wasted potential. It's sad to say this, but I hope the show ends with this series, and I hope they can give it at least a satisfying conclusion.
Yup. The only reason I keep watching are Colin's and Bradley's performances. Colin is bloody BRILLIANT with every single scene, and Bradley truly shines playing opposite Colin. If it weren't for them, I would have left this show behind ages ago, because the storylines themselves are just awful now. I think my jaw dropped when I read the writers commenting that they basically hated much of both S1 and S2, when for me, those have always been the stronger seasons of this series (because at least back then, the initial premise of the show was actually, you know, USED).
And yes, I agree 100%. I'm ready for the show to end, as much as it saddens me to say that. They clearly have no interest in actually developing the characters, nor doing any kind of reveal (leaving poor Arthur looking like the world's biggest dunce), and it's painfully obvious when you watch interviews with the cast (most specifically Bradley and Colin) that they too are ready to be done. I think it would have been a lot different had the writers not been so set on never revealing Merlin's magic. They could have done SO much with the series if Arthur knew about it, if Merlin got the recognition he deserves as well as becoming Arthur's advisor instead of cleaning up after and serving Arthur (and Gwen! - which grates to NO END). It really is a shame. :(
''At least he NOTICED that Merlin was limping and asked why - the answer was never given.''
It almost looked like Arthur was asking about the limping like he would ask about the weather...the writers spend a LOT of lines trying to show us that Arthur care (Where's Merlin? and blabla)...but even if you believe for 1 second that Merlin was in fact visiting someone he could still get attack by bandits on the road...(if you don't know that Merin has magic and can defend himself)
Arthur was a bit slow too IMO to believe so easily Gwen's story. I mean, come on, Merlin's gone for days. He really think that Merlin would go away without telling at least Gaius? Let's go in Arthur's mind for one minute and say for one second that Merlin is really visiting someone, if that person is living so far away (or he thinks he'll stay for a while), he would at least tell Gaius or tell someone he'll be gone for a long time. And if, again, Gwen's story was truth (we're still in Arthur's POV), if he didn't want anyone to know he was gone, if could've been cause he was visiting someone close and was hoping he would be back soon9before someone notice he's gone).....but he's been gone for days.....Come on Arthur, for someone pretending to care and be worry, you sure don't think too much.....
Agree with you on everything! - I think the discontent in the Merlin community is growing, and righfully so. They are lucky to have Colin, Bradley and the rest to keep us watching! Will there really be an announcement tonight?? Why at midnight? Are they scared of the reaction?
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.

I'd like deagal to stay in camelot and become something like merlins aprentice

ReplyDeleteshow depresses me more and more with each passing episode. This entire
Gwen arc is nothing but filler, and such a waste for what will most
likely be the final season. We don't see any development of the
characters - ACTUAL development.
We see Merlin utterly miserable in his role now, whereas before he
would talk about his and Arthur's destiny and his belief that Arthur
would bring about a golden age, where magic was once more accepted, we
now see Merlin distant, sire this and my lord that (he rarely calls
Arthur by name anymore and it is disconcerting to see him so cut off
from his supposed best friend). We see Merlin talk about Arthur becoming
this supposed great king but no longer does he talk about their
combined destiny, no longer does he mention Arthur eventually accepting
magic.
Unfortunately, it seems The Disir shows what Merlin actually believes
now, that magic has no place in Camelot - that it never will, that he
doesn't. He's just "doing his job" now, whereas before he protected
Arthur because the dragon promised that he and Arthur together would
unite Albion, bring peace, bring back magic. With only five episodes
left, we are no closer to that destiny than we were in season one, in
fact we are even farther away from that destiny now than in the
beginning.
I expect Camlann to be the final episode, and to be honest, whereas
before I might have believed that Arthur's death would utterly break
Merlin, the disconnect now, the distance, the utter misery that is
Merlin's constant state and the fact that even after TEN YEARS, the most
Arthur appreciates Merlin for is his helping him dress and drawing a
bath, when Arthur dies now, I suspect Merlin will be fine. In fact, I
choose to believe that once Arthur dies, Merlin will actually get to try
and find happiness in his own life that he was never permitted to while
shackled to his "destiny". Ten years living subjugated and treated like
absolute crap, hiding who he REALLY is from the man who, until this
season, I believed wholeheartedly was his BEST friend...
Arthur is not even remotely close to this great king he's supposed to
be. At best, he's slightly better than Uthur. He's willing to ally
himself with the most despicable of men (the Sarrum), and that, to me,
does not make a great king. We never once see anyone upset either, that
Arthur is willing to ally Camelot with this man who takes pleasure in
making others suffer, who is, by all we've seen untrustworthy and quite
frankly even worse than Uthur ever was. Arthur was supposed to take us
AWAY from Uthur's reign, away from the unforgiving murders of innocent
people, not align himself with a man that does worse than Uthur could
have dreamt of. At least Uthur simply killed these people and didn't
spend years torturing them for his own amusement.
I'm so disappointed where this show has gone. So disappointed that
they've wasted an entire season and never moved the characters forward
AT ALL. So disappointed that in the end, they're going to kill Arthur
before he even sees this supposed golden age. So disappointed that they
constantly think it's funny to point out how ALONE Merlin is, how
miserable he is, and how NO ONE cares about him until they actually need
him and then they reward his loyalty with insults.
I do agree with your main point that NOTHING happens in the main story line yet again. I cannot believe how much time has been wasted with the last two (albeit enjoyable)episodes. The main story arcs have been completely neglected.
ReplyDeleteAnd you are right - it seems that Merlin has given up on the shared destiny idea.
ReplyDeleteI honestly don't see it being redeemed at all.
ReplyDeleteActually, I don't think Gwen's efforts in avoiding kissing would make Arthur suspicious.
ReplyDeleteIt's a shame that a show with a great initial premise, and for me with great character development in S1 and S2, started to go downhill in S3, and entered this loop of the same and tiresome plotline almost every episode and series.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, I agree 100%.
ReplyDeleteIt almost looked like Arthur was asking about the limping like he would ask about the weather...the writers spend a LOT of lines trying to show us that Arthur care (Where's Merlin? and blabla)...but even if you believe for 1 second that Merlin was in fact visiting someone he could still get attack by bandits on the road...(if you don't know that Merin has magic and can defend himself)
ReplyDeleteWill there really be an announcement tonight?? Why at midnight? Are they scared of the reaction?
I don't think TPTB care about fan reaction since they didn't care about what the fans want all this time.
ReplyDeleteI don't know why at midnight, maybe because they want the news to match the release of the dvd vol.1 tomorrow? Who knows...
I'm curious if the news is just what most of us already knew or if there'll be something else too?
Frankly, I don't think there'll be movies or anything else, at least not with the same cast, I guess we'll find out in a few hours.
So excited to have a date for the SyFy channel! Jan 4th is going to be a great night!
ReplyDeleteHighest rated ep of the season. And once again, Angel Coulby was brilliant.
