Pretty good episode, I will miss Isaak though. He was a good, likeable, and honorable villain. Kinda glad Dex wasn't the one to kill him though. Curious how/if Dex will go after whatever his name is who shot Isaak.
I'm also glad Dex/Deb are on a bit better ground with one another. Deb is still figuring out everything, trying to come to turns with it, but at least she hasn't turned on Dex.
And damn it LaGuerta. I hate how when you finally decide to be a cop is when you're tracking Dex.
Comparing his sister to M&M's? Not so good. I got my problems with Isaak. Not so long ago he wanted Dexter dead. And all he loves. And then he shows up at his apartment and expects from Dexter to help him. Just like that? Yeah, sure. Why not. But I did feel a bit sorry for him in the end. He really seemed to love Victor. But he didn't need to die. Sure, going to a hospital with a shot wound would be problematic. But he would be alive. He took the easy way out. Or, maybe this is his revenge. He bled out. On Dexter's boat. So, if anyone (like the police) would for any reason (like an anonymous tip) check his boat Dex would have a hard time to explain the blood. And without body he can't prove his innocence. Let's hope Dex can clean it all up. Is it just me, or did LaGuerta become a better cop? While she was Lt. She was never so obsessed and dedicated. Maybe it's because of Doakes. She never believed he was the BHB. She wants to clear his name. So: would she act the same way if it would be, let's say, Trinity or ITK? So Dex is killing in public now. Great. The best way to follow rule no1: Don't get caught. I give Deb credit for saving Hannah. She could wait 5 min and she would be dead. I don't get why Deb lied to Hannah in the hospital. Doesn't she know that Hannah knows about Dex? I'd say something like: "If you hurt my brother I'll hunt you down like a rabid dog."
Yeah, I liked Isaak too. He had this charm not may villains have (my favorite is Gary Oldman). Miss him? Well, we already got a new serial killer to take care of. Deb would never turn on Dex. She loves him. As her brother and as a man (or she used to. We'll see how it goes on). He is all she has. The only reason she would ever turn on him (IMO) would be, if he starts killing innocent people. That is something she, with all the love she has for him) couldn't handle. I mean, it was hard enough for her to come to terms that he kills killers. Agree on LaGuerta. But as I already said, I think it's because it's Doakes. Otherwise she wouldn't be so obsessed. She wouldn't bother reopen a case. And especially not taking care of it herself.
Great example of a villain with charm, love Gary Oldman in general as an actor, but I'll always remember him in Air Force One.
Anyway, back to Dexter. I agree with your assessment that Deb would only turn on Dex if he started killing innocent people. This season has been great with showing Deb's acceptance of Dexter's life, the moment that stands out to me the most is when she showed up to pick up Dex after he killed Spelzter (sp?) and stared up at the smoke in wonder.
That's another good point, the only reason LaGuerta is actually doing her job instead of focusing on the political side of her job is because of Doakes. Curious what will happen at the end of the season with her and Dex.
Completely disagree with you. I love season 7, because it's super turn table-ish. I honestly don't know at all who's going to live or die.
In some ways this season is a juxtaposition to last season, as it's dooms day themes become extrovertly presented in Dexter's life.
This season we see sides to Dexter and Deb we have yet to see, as Dexter keeps going against his code (ever since Nebraska he hasn't been the same) and Debra must decide what she really believes in and what her feelings for Dexter really are. Additionally Hannah comprises of 3 other major characters (Rita, Lumen, and Lila) making her a tempting proposition for Dexter, as this really all goes back to killing Brian and his search for the perfect partner in crime and in relation to his feelings for Deb, feelings he has been in denial about, as Dexter often just bury's his emotions. But the season is full of weird double wammy's like Isaak comprising of a combination of Miguel Prado and Jordan Chase, while also the haunting death of James Doakes (and S2's lead of almost having Dex turn himself in--being cuaght) can be felt in LaGuerta's pursuits, the burning of the church, and now these "fire-burn" victims, which seemingly again may show a parallel or juxtaposition to Dexter, as I suspect the Phantom is the Fire-expert guy.
I find this a great season full of characters and interesting personality shifts that I just love!
Glad that you pointed everything out so detailed because it shows, how unimaginative the show became. New characters are a mishmash of old ones, no one is really in danger only on the surface. IF someone is going to die, then in the season finale and it will be very much LaGuerta, as everyone believes, Quinn will die because he is in constant danger.
It is creative if these experiences and repeated-fate orientated events are meant to evoke the writer's thoughts on those things, as this show is really about Dexter coming to terms with himself (or possibly someone else...). It's about justification, purpose, and identity, as Dexter (often in denial) fights the possibility of bigger forces at work, as he ironically searches for his paradise in the most dangerous ways possible.
This was an excellent episode. When the season started, who could have predicted that Isaak would be killed in episode 9 by one of his own men? I LOVED that Dexter wasn't the one who killed him as this is a very refreshing change. Having the big bad gone with 1/4 of the season remaining was a gutsy move by the writers. Ray Stevenson was a pleasure to watch.
Hannah's facial expression in the hospital scene was very telling (Yvonne Strahovski is so good at showing so many complex emotions with her eyes and facial expressions). She didn't seem comfortable with Dexter bearing his soul to her. I think Hannah will try to kill Dexter in the next episode or two. All it will take is for Dexter to go against her wishes somehow and she will want him dead (which is her pattern).
My Garry favorites are 5th Element, Lost in Space (yeah, I'm into sci-fi), Leon (I love Natalie in that part!) and Dracula. Oh hell, I always love him. Even in Harry and Batman, when he is not a villain. Which was a very strange experience.
Yeah, Jennifer was extraordinary this season. Great performance with all of Debs ups and downs (mostly downs). The crematorium was good, yes. It seemed to me that she accepted it and finally made peace with it. And last week when she told him that she was in love with him … Nearly gave me a heart attack. Or when she discovered that her brother is a serial killer … Yes, Jennifer deals very well with Debs emotions this season.
What will happen with LaGuerta? Well, since we're talking Dexter: She dies. If she finds anything on him and wants to bring him down he has to kill her. Rule no.1: Don't get caught. Maybe Deb kills her to protect Dex. That would be the moment I'll open a bottle of champagne. But it's good to finally see the bitch act like a cop.
Ya... no... there is still explanation to be had. This season has been top notch with Dexter and Debra's storylines, as well as Isaak's and even Hannah's. Some of the rest is a little lackluster still (Batistsa and Quinn), but the rest is Dexter at its best. So I still don't see why this season has been no good at all?
5th Element and Leon are awesome as well, excellent choices. I do like him as a good guy too, like in Harry Potter and Batman, but he does do bad so well. He's like Sean Bean, does a bad guy incredibly well, but I do like to see him occasionally as a good guy.
I think out of everyone, they have made Deb's reaction to Dex's true persona seem real. They planned out a slow, methodical way for Deb's mind to try and rationalize Dex to going from treating it like an addiction, to trying to help out, to covering up for him, to accepting it in a little way. It's been a pleasure to watch.
I truly hope that LaGuerta dies, but it doesn't seem like she's really on Dexter's radar yet and she's getting too close and involving more people. I'm more worried if she will get the word out before Dex (or Deb) has a chance to kill her.
I like Lumen over Hannah too, but I can't say I completely dislike Hannah either, despite that I think she leans more towards Lila (and ultimately Brian) in the sense that she can't be trusted. Hannah I think is an interesting character who comes at an interesting time in Dexter's life, but when it gets down to it, I think she's actually pretty cold.
Mostly everyone can play a bad guy (a killer, a psychopath, dirty cop, spy, …). But to portray a charismatic bad guy the audience actually loves … THAT is art. A skill no one can teach you. A skill you have to be born with. Although Gary got some awards, I wonder why he never got an Oscar or Golden globe. He often plays in thrillers, horror or Sci-fi. Not exactly movies that are often nominated for Oscars. Except maybe for costumes or special effect. Scandal!
And while we're talking charming villains. You watch Vampire Diaries? Joseph as Klaus is just awesome.
It's good to make it slow and believable. They could force it all in one ep or two, for Deb to find out, react, come to terms and accept it. But it was way better this way. Believable. What she's been thru was a hard and complicated psychological process (remember her nightmares). Maybe some things were still going too fast. But they couldn't make it too slow either. If they would take the entire season for that process, people would lose track and interest. No, I think it was just fine. Maybe I would wait one ep longer for her to accept it (the crematorium scene – I would make them talk about it next ep to stretch the process) and would probably wait one ep (or two) longer for her to actually ask him to kill Hannah. That was huge. For both of them. And probably the most important thing she told him/asked from him. I think, it was even bigger than her confession that she was in love with him.
She's getting closer, but she has no prove. All she has is, that he owns a boat that was for a while in the same marina where the BHB supposed to have his boat. And the fact that Doakes thought of him as creepy. She's not on his radar cause he doesn't know she is still investigating the case. I think that even Deb believes she gave up. And if LaGuerta suspects Dex behind the BHB, she won't tell Deb as long as she suspects that Deb would help him. I'm afraid they'll realize she's on to them when it's too late. Oh and her statement like: The bad guys are still disappearing. Oh, come on, genius. Of course they are. If they're suspected and still free, of course they'll run for it. Especially if they commit another crime (murder, rape, …).
Exactly what I said and why I'm against Dex or Deb killing LaGuerta. Killing cops is always tricky. Especially in this case. If she shares her theories of Dex being the BHB and then she dies or disappears, the entire department is on Dex and Deb. Hey, here is a thought! Let Hannah handle it! She killed Price with poison. It looked like a heart attack and the tox came back negative.
And yes, in this case Hannahs kill would be self-defense.
I like what you say, although to me, some of those personality shifts are not that welcome. I said it last week and this week's episode just went way ahead with this, but the writers don't seem to be able to decide on whether we see a grown-up, experienced and worn-out Dex, or still the quirky youngster from season 1.
The M&Ms line was so bad, I honestly felt Michael C. Hall cringe inside during that conversation. And his fixation on texting back afterwards? He couldn't have waited for one damned minute?
Much, much, much of this season feels entirely out of character for Dex to me. His sentence that he was afraid only twice in his life to Hannah was almost worse - it's as if he's totally shrugged away Rita, and the short "I'm over that" line before didn't help much. If we remember his trance and shock after discovering her body, and his intention to get her out of the way to save her from Trinity before - so he wasn't afraid then? Shocked?
One second, he's totally sad about Isaak, seeing him shot on the deck, the next second he's his stubborn stern self again while with Isaak on his boat?
All the drama the seasons before saw Dex in pain, mental pain of having to deal with all the crap that could happen (Prado running wild and him getting discovered, Trinity walking into the station saying his name, his near freak-out with Doakes, and so on), and now he's got the Ukrainian mafia after him, beds a killer, constantly gives a shit about his sister who could arrest him any minute if she was getting too pissed, and he's all like, oh well, I'll handle it, whatever comes may come, *shrugs*, and so on, in every damn situation and whatever happens to him or his folks...
While I really enjoy the twists and turns and charaters of this season, I don't like this Dexter at all. And that's the first time in any season that ever happened =\
I also felt that they didn't have to kill him... he could have traveled with Dex to the spot and they could have said farewell, but every likeable guy seems to die in this show, that's a little bit sad.
Concerning the logic of it all, I totally agree. Seems like the showrunner change has tuned up the excitement, but they have traded it for a lot of sense and logic.
Good point about being able to portray a charismatic villain that the audience likes is far different and more difficult than just playing a villain. One thing I've been thinking about lately is scenes that are so well acted that they make me stop whatever I'm doing and stare in awe. Where you have some act so passionately that I feel like I'm truly watching this character as though they were real (Robert Knepper in Breakout Kings), or show so much with only facial expressions (John Noble in the premiere episode of Fringe this season at the end, Sean Bean when he died in GoT).
And no, I have not seen Vampire Diares.
Believable! That was the word I was looking for. For some reason realistic just kept sticking in my head. True, they did kind of force her to have to take things too fast since this is a 12-episode season, but still, I'm proud of the writers for having it a continuous dilemma and thought process for Deb this season instead of writing it off in 1 or 2 episodes. And I agree, asking Dex to kill Hannah was bigger than her admission to her being in love with him.
True, she still doesn't have proof, yet. But the ball is rolling, she's roping other people in to become curious about it. And you're right, if she does share theories about Dex and then is killed, the spotlight will be on Dex (and Deb). I like that idea of letting Hannah kill LaGuerta. No matter what, I hope LaGuerta dies, I've been hoping for that since Season 1.
Lumen was different. She never felt anything as Hannah feels for Dexter and nor did Dexter felt anything like "helpless" "love" for Lumen.I liked Lumen and hated Lyla but Gosh people need to stop comparing. For me Hannah has been the best love interest for Dexter so far.
I'd like to believe she was taken by surprise when Dexter expressed his feelings for her.But that expression was gone pretty soon once she realized that she feels the same way. And while i'm 50-50 on Dexter killing Hannah, even if he does kill her (which hope against hope he wouldn't) woudn't be because she would try to kill him.It might be because of some extremely big misunderstanding and he will realize it after killing her.
I know what you mean. Some actors on movies and shows can sometimes act so brilliant that you just laugh and cry with them. You forget everything else.
Yeah, that’s a think that keeps bugging me. The seasons are too short. 12 eps? For the first season, maybe. If you don't know if the show will be a success (like Buffy S1). But after all these years … They could do much more with at least 18 eps, if not 21 or 22, as usual. But on the other side … Mostly it works out. If they would stretch the same story up to 21 or 22 eps it would be too much. The story would evolve too slowly and people would lose interest.
Till now I never gave LaGuerta much of a thought. She's a vicious beast, always was. But she was never a problem. Except ignoring and underestimating Deb, I never had a problem with her. She was never in Dexters way, never a threat. That changed.
Yeah, Hannah. Well, I was thinking … Since she is in the game, they could put her talents with poison to a good use. You know: Improvise. Use what you have.
In theory I would like a shorter season of a show, but when the show still puts out what sort of feels like a filler episode in the midst of a shorter season then I wish we had more episodes. Plus getting to see more of the characters I enjoy watching is never bad. 24 should be standard again for all shows.
Honestly, I hated LaGuerta since they showed her weird, creepy crush on Dex in the first season and since then I've always viewed her in a negative light, not to mention she was a bitch to Deb a lot of the time.
Know, it always depends on the story they try to tell in a season, the side stories and the writers. For Dexter, for example, it works just fine with 12 eps. Maybe some seasons could use one or two more eps (like this one), but normally it works. And on other shows it's just too much if they stretch the story to 21 or 22 eps and then they give us filler eps, cause otherwise they would end the story half way thru season. It really depends on a good team of writers. And of course on the main characters. More characters mean more side stories, means more eps.
Exactly as I said. LaGauerta was always a bitch (and mean to Deb). But I didn't give a damn about it, about her. If she lives or dies or is a good or a bad cop … Cause she was never a danger to Dex. Now she is and I want her dead.
Remember S1, when she declared that guard as prime suspect in the ice truck killings, and Deb warned her, but that bitch didn't listen? And then parts of the guard started appearing and she had to admit that Deb was right? Ah! I was laughing so hard, I almost fall off my couch. A moment to remember for the rest of my life!
I can understand why it can be frustrating . I keep thinking that ever since The Brother Sam break down, allowing him to "change" his dark passenger to Brian and his trip to Nebraska, Dexter listen's less and less to Harry and does more things that resembles that 'what if sanario' should have Brian lived kind of a thing...There have been moments this season (much like season 4) that I find myself saying out loud, "No! What are you doing, Dexter?! You're going to get Deb killed, or your gonna get caught!!" . He's just been so emotionally unhinged, that he seems completely out of his element, but I think it goes with that idea that writers are leading us down to some more specific place. It feels like they're getting ready for a final season, but at the very least it feels like some kind of rather dramatic turning point. It's these kinds of personality "shifts" and this kind of double wammys with some interesting tie backs that make me feel Dexter's reality only becomes more and more "fantastical", as his life, beliefs, and actions, becomes more unstable. That's why sometimes I also think this reality is unrealistic and it leads me to think that Dexter is dreaming and that Dexter is trying to come to terms with Harry by imagining himself in his shoes...
Whatever is going on I keep getting the feeling he could turn on Deb too. I can see some horrific situation where Hannah tries to kill Dexter, but Deb kills Hannah to save Dexter. They both kill Tom and LaGeurta, (making Deb ' a killer') and Doakes shows up as his DP and he thinks Dexter needs to kill Deb. -which would be bad, because I think the persona of Doakes is way more persuasive, than the persona of Brian.
I don't know, except the season seems like it is full of uncertainty and I just kept the feeling it's going to end on a twisted note. I guess we'll see (:
Oh, I know! So sad (and the way he died was so unexpected!)
I wanted Dexter and Hannah to run away with him to Europe (or Argentina) SO Bad! He definitely has to be one of my favorite guests to appear on the show. Charismatic and intelligent ::swoon::
Uncertainty and unhinged certainly describe this season pretty well.
Other than that, I would LOVE to see Doakes appear for a moment in the final season, maybe as you said as his DP. He was such a great character and though I loved the ending of that season, I really felt sad that they got rid of him (not even through Dexter's hands, just like Sam and Isaak).
I would love that too! I agree it's hard to see most of the secondary characters die. I think it's so easy to become attached to most of them. There are so many I miss and I think Isaak will be a hard one for me to part with.
Same here...I think Isaak is even my favorite secondary character of the whole show. He was a man of real life, with real emotions and real, reasonable motivations and actions, whereas we often see more of an over-the-top version or straight-out parody of characters like the funny Asian guy, the Latino with the restaurant, the evil brother, the heinous old guy, the loveable wife, or the bad cop who gets the girls, and so on.
Ray Stevenson did some awesome work in his few episodes, truly memorable.
I think people are disappointed that Dex himself didn't kill those he hated most this season (Louis, Isaak), and I somewhat agree, but other than that (and I enjoy the season a lot) I feel there's been quite a change in character for Dex. After all he's been through and for his urge to adhere to his father's code, he's certainly acting pretty stupid or nonsensical in a lot of situations this way. And he seems to not care about anything that Deb is going through, whereas he almost always had quite some empathy for her in the seasons before.
Still, I'm excited for the last third of the season =)
Ya I understand that point then, with Dex not killing those he hated this season. Louis was such a disappointment he was really the only blight on this season for me, I actually was glad that Dex didn't kill Isaak.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
I really hope dexter gets killed because there is nothing redeeming about him... This season is not good at all.
ReplyDelete..BLOOD AND ROMANCE,,,strange combination

ReplyDeleteThe M&Ms line was so bad, I honestly felt Michael C.
ReplyDeleteConcerning the logic of it all, I totally agree.
ReplyDeleteAnd no, I have not seen Vampire Diares.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to believe she was taken by surprise when Dexter expressed his feelings for her.But that expression was gone pretty soon once she realized that she feels the same way.
ReplyDeleteAnd while i'm 50-50 on Dexter killing Hannah, even if he does kill her (which hope against hope he wouldn't) woudn't be because she would try to kill him.It might be because of some extremely big misunderstanding and he will realize it after killing her.
I love Dexter and Hannah.I don't care what other think. It's official Dexter Morgan is in love with Hannah.Deal with it.
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean. Some actors on movies and shows can sometimes act so brilliant that you just laugh and cry with them. You forget everything else.
ReplyDeleteYeah, that’s a think that keeps bugging me.
Use what you have.
agreed....after seeing his tender side come out of him....i was teary eyed when he died... :-(
ReplyDeleteIn theory I would like a shorter season of a show, but when the show still puts out what sort of feels like a filler episode in the midst of a shorter season then I wish we had more episodes. Plus getting to see more of the characters I enjoy watching is never bad. 24 should be standard again for all shows.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I hated LaGuerta since they showed her weird, creepy crush on Dex in the first season and since then I've always viewed her in a negative light, not to mention she was a bitch to Deb a lot of the time.
ReplyDeleteExactly as I said.
ReplyDeleteWhatever is going on I keep getting the feeling he could turn on Deb too.
Except she's the first one who might want to kill him...
ReplyDeleteOh, I know! So sad (and the way he died was so unexpected!)
ReplyDeleteI wanted Dexter and Hannah to run away with him to Europe (or Argentina) SO Bad! He definitely has to be one of my favorite guests to appear on the show. Charismatic and intelligent ::swoon::
Uncertainty and unhinged certainly describe this season pretty well.
ReplyDeleteOther than that, I would LOVE to see Doakes appear for a moment in the final season, maybe as you said as his DP.
ReplyDeleteSame here...I think Isaak is even my favorite secondary character of the whole show.
ReplyDeleteRay Stevenson did some awesome work in his few episodes, truly memorable.
This is second to last in front of last season for me. The only storyline I've been caring about is the Laguerta/BHB.
ReplyDeleteI think people are disappointed that Dex himself didn't kill those he hated most this season (Louis, Isaak), and I somewhat agree, but other than that (and I enjoy the season a lot) I feel there's been quite a change in character for Dex. After all he's been through and for his urge to adhere to his father's code, he's certainly acting pretty stupid or nonsensical in a lot of situations this way. And he seems to not care about anything that Deb is going through, whereas he almost always had quite some empathy for her in the seasons before.
ReplyDeleteStill, I'm excited for the last third of the season =)
Ya I understand that point then, with Dex not killing those he hated this season. Louis was such a disappointment he was really the only blight on this season for me, I actually was glad that Dex didn't kill Isaak.
