Merlin - BBC Press Release Confirms this is the Last Season

It was announced today that the current series of Merlin will be the last as BBC One’s hit show reaches a spectacular conclusion this Christmas. The epic family fantasy drama will bow out with a special two-part finale, as this unique re-telling of the Arthurian legend reaches its natural and dramatic end – it’s not to be missed!

Merlin has been enthralling audiences on Saturday nights over last five years, consistently attracting an average audience of over six million viewers, with ratings for the current series peaking at 7.1 million.

Merlin has been a firm favourite with BBC One viewers since its first outing in 2008. Celebrated for its magical storytelling, cinematic visual effects and most of all the wonderful cast which includes Colin Morgan as Merlin, Bradley James as Arthur Pendragon, Katie McGrath as Morgana, Angel Coulby as Guinevere, Anthony Head as Uther Pendragon, Richard Wilson as Gaius, and John Hurt as the voice of the Great Dragon.

Co-creators and executive producers, Johnny Capps and Julian Murphy, confirm the current series will be the last: “This is the series where the storylines truly reach their apex. We always felt the story of the legend was best told across five series, leading to a spectacular finale that draws on the best known elements of this much-loved story and brings to a conclusion the battle for Camelot.

"We’d like to thank the amazing cast and crew for their professionalism and dedication, the BBC, FME and all of our partners globally for their incredible support and encouragement across the last five series.

"But chiefly, our thanks go to Merlin’s remarkable and loyal audience around the world for their enthusiasm for the characters and Camelot universe.”

Danny Cohen, Controller, BBC One, said: “Merlin’s mix of magic, adventure and humour quickly became a hit with BBC One audiences and has continued to thrill families over the last five years on Saturday nights. I admire the creators’ decision to end Merlin on a high, but also know that we will miss it in the BBC One schedule.

"On behalf of BBC One I would like to thank Shine and all those involved in the making of the show both on and off screen. I hope fans will tune in over the coming weeks to see the spectacularly dramatic final episodes, and we have ambitious plans for new drama in the Saturday evening slot in 2013.”

Colin Morgan (Merlin) said: “From the beginning this was always going to be a five year journey that we embarked on and I think the show has run its natural course. The show has grown and grown each year and now we’ve arrived at its strongest point and we’ve achieved what we set out to do… I know this is the end, and I know this is goodbye, but thank you for being there on the journey with us because it has been a lot of fun!”

Bradley James (King Arthur) said: “The Merlin years have provided me with fond memories, great experiences and beloved friends and all the while we were supported by a devoted fan base who made the show a unique, surreal and special experience. My words won't do justice to the honour of being King Arthur so I shall just say that it has been an exceptional one and that knowing the show has been a part of so many people's lives, has been humbling."

Katie McGrath (Morgana) said: "I have always said the success of the show has stemmed from our audience being able to relate to the characters on different levels - being based on the universally loved Arthurian legend is only a tiny part of its success - it's a story about acceptance and growing up. The breathtaking finale of this series leaves you with no doubt that characters have been on their journeys and had their stories told - it's completely the right time to draw our telling of the story to a close."

Angel Coulby (Guinevere) said: "It has been a very special and memorable five years making Merlin. I feel extremely proud to have been part of such a brilliant show and such a great team. I think we've told the story we set out to tell, which ends with the fantastic two-part finale by the way! I believe the key to any successful show is making sure you leave people wanting more!"

Richard Wilson (Gaius) said: “Firstly, I would like to say that I'm extremely sad that Merlin has come to an end. Speaking as Gaius, I feel I have mentored the young wizard as far as I can - he is much smarter and greater than me now and I am simply exhausted!"

Other memorable cast include Mordred (Alexander Vlahos) and the brave Knights of the Round Table Sir Leon (Rupert Young), Sir Percival (Tom Hopper), Sir Gwaine (Eoin Macken) and the late Sir Elyan (Adetomiwa Edun).

Merlin has attracted an astounding array of guest stars including Michelle Ryan, Santiago Cabrera, Emilia Fox, Asa Butterfield, Mackenzie Crook, Adrian Lester, Warwick Davis, Miriam Margoyles, Eddie Marsan, Will Mellor, James Cosmo, Lindsay Duncan, Janet Montgomery, James Fox, Tom Ellis, Nathanial Parker, Michael Cronin, Charles Dance, Gemma Jones, Sarah Parish, Miranda Raison, Ben Daniels and John Lynch.

Across five series writers Julian Jones, Jake Michie, Lucy Watkins, Howard Overman, Ben Vanstone and Richard McBrien have taken the characters on a spectacular journey.

Series five opened to a Camelot at the height of its ‘golden age’, but a menacing omen overshadows Arthur’s future and unknown threats emerge from within the castle walls. Now everything Merlin has tried to protect is in danger. Albion’s dark trial has begun and the final battle has been joined, but who will survive?

Do not miss the last ever episodes and the dramatic conclusion of Merlin on BBC One, Saturdays at 8pm.

Merlin is executive produced by Johnny Capps and Julian Murphy for Shine Television, with Bethan Jones executive producer for BBC Wales. The series is a BBC Cymru Wales Production and was commissioned by Ben Stephenson, Controller BBC Drama Commissioning and Danny Cohen, Controller BBC One.

Created and produced by Shine TV, Fremantle Media Enterprises (FME) are an investor in Merlin and hold the exclusive distribution (excluding UK), home entertainment and licensing rights to the property.

  1. Kind of bummed about this. I've been watching the show via streaming video for sometime - and there's just so much more I want to see in terms of storyline. I was seriously hoping for one more series of episodes.

  2. ah well... There goes :( iI am not one who believes in the movies or anything else past the series... so well ... guess no more Merlin indeed :(

  3. I know it's not unexpected but it's breaking my heart. There are so many things that we never got to see. I just don't know how I'm gonna take this finale. One thing is that it's the end, but it's a whole another pain thinking about it ending with Arthur's death. I just, ... can't.

I am okay with this, because:

    - Most of us knew from the start that its a five season gig. They never hid that.
    - The Series 5 so far has been THE BEST season of the entire show and its far better for the show to go out with the bang when its at the top, than to go out with but a whimper, after artificially extending the show and losing quality.

This season so far is awesome, so its great to know that last impressions Merlin show will leave me will be extremely positive and high-quality.

  5. Well, this is better than the show being cancelled. As others have pointed out, the producers always said that Merlin was a five-year story. In addition, it's a story that should have an ending rather than being drawn out ad nauseam until it loses its fanbase. Granted, I'm not looking forward to saying goodbye to the characters I've grown to love over the years. I got hooked on Merlin in Season 1 and have been an avid follower of the series ever since. Coming to the conclusion will be hard.

  6. I honestly think that the show will end with Arthur still alive and Merlin's secret being out entering and them entering the 'golden age' with Mordred and Morgana being the enemies of Camelot. It's been said before i think, that these 5 series have been the 'prequal' to the legend we know ......

  7. Finally, is this the BIG NEWS??? I guess for a lot of people it is, it's good that I've been preparing myself for months, and this S5 really helped me not to feel so sad.

Well, it's been fun, I'll miss the show, but it has run its course, clearly they have no new and interesting stories to tell, so it's good that they end this now before it gets worse.

I'll miss this cast together, but I'm looking forward to seeing their future projects.

And finally, I hope they tie everything nicely, and not too much heartbreak please, not on Christmas!

  8. I can't believe it. Really, I can't.
After 5 years (where people want to see Arthur's reaction) they want to close this serie and this secret in 2 (maybe 3) episodes.
    Congratulation. They kidded us. Really.

  9. That means we won't see Arthur working together with Merlin after Merlin's secret is out and we won't see Arthur uniting Albion. Sad.

ANd you know I REALLY doubt that.

Either Arthur will die and we will get a "classic" version of arthurian legends ending, but with a flashforward showing thriving Britain and implying that Arthur's and Merlin's struggle was not in vain....

    or....

Merlin will sacrifice himself, ending series with his death and Arthur ending the persecution of mages because of Merlin's sacrifice, as well as allowing Merlin to be buried under a marked grave, as a hero.

Don't be so sure about that. The series has a definitive epilogue ;]

  12. Seeing as I only watch via the web these days since I'm in America - how many episodes are left in this season?

Episode Eight aired this week and the season has 13 episodes, last three being kind-of a three-parter.

  14. But it will 1-2 episodes at most. It's not the same. :)
The epilogue rumours are definitely interesting. Knowing british tv shows it could be anything.

  15. Thanks - I love the show and can't wait until it starts airing here in January - so I do my best to keep up.

  16. Well, I guess we've seen this coming! I just hope they're doing justice with the ending. Can't wait to see Colin Morgan in new projects!

  17. 5 episodes to end it right? Can not be done. I have been cheated and will be trashing my DVDs. All I wanted was the magic reveal and I don't want it done 5 minutes before the show ends. I want it done 2 seasons ago. I want it done now.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Best case we have 2 episodes....in 2 episodes, unless they do absolutely nothing but deal with the reveal....it won't be much. Meaning; If the show was realistic, no one would be too happy when your best friend keep such a huge secret from you. So even if the reveal happen somewhere in episode 12, Arthur will be pissed. But since there's only 1, 1/2 episode left to the serie; either Arthur will forgive in 5 minutes Or, it will be a ''long'' fight. So either they'll totally mess up and totally skip over what could've been a great storyline/character development (forgiving and accepting in 5 minutes) or we'll see about nothing of them working together

    ....
That's why I don't have much hope for the big finale :S
Unless they do a long storyline like in some of the great fanfictions I've read (Arthur banishing Merlin or Merlin running away or a trial or whatever), but if they do that, it mean almost (or nothing) happening in the last episodes, no Morgana or huge fight or something like that.

  19. So sad about this. I was really hoping to see Merlin an Arthur without all the secret. But at this point I just hope that they can do a good end.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Exactly. And I really hope Arthur won't find out 5 minutes before his death. That would be the worst ending ever. Even Gwen and Arthur's storyline got more time with betraying and forgiving however Arthur forgave her rather quickly.
I somewhat hope for the reveal where Arthur starts suspecting Merlin. He would notice how people miraculously heal and he would wonder why, he would think about situations in which he survived and Merlin was there, I'm good with Arthur thinking Merlin is a betrayer but not doing anything until he gets proof of that. And he wouldn't get any. I want Arthur to be smart for once.

But I highly doubt it would happen now.

  21. 'The show will reach its natural and dramatic end' - it can be only Arthur's death. According to them the 'Golden Age' was the three years we never saw. ('Series five opened to a Camelot at the height of its ‘golden age’') !!! How could we have missed that?
It is a shame that we will never see Arthur's reaction to a magic reveal in full - IF in fact there will be a reveal. I think that fans might boycott season 5 DVDs if that happens!

    ReplyDelete
  22. alright...expected but sad nonetheless.
Excuse me while I go pray in my room for a magic revel amongst the tear sheds

    ReplyDelete
  23. What's a bit annoying is how they don't have enough time to finish what they've been teasing us for 5 years and to finish in full strenght the serie

But they found enough time/episodes to make a 4 episode arc about Evil-Gwen.....
