I risk alienating the masses here but I
can’t be silent. After a fantastic start to Season 9 we were presented last
night with the dud. Now. I’m a fair person. I will allow the writers and
directors/editors (because both were at fault in this episode) one failure for
the season and this is that one.
It’s easy to remember this episode with
fondness and excitement, as the last image we see is Meredith finally pregnant,
in the house that McDreamy built, with her arms wrapped around said Dream boat
holding a t-shirt for Zola. But that
just covers up many evils.
This episode failed on the basis of poor
quality of writing (not the stories themselves) and woeful directing/editing.
Both of these led to an amateurish feel and a cavity inducing earnestness;
stories were predictable and over-sentimental, directing was blunt and
unsubtle. I actually don’t know where to start so I’ll dive in randomly.
The breast grabbing guy – of course he has
a brain tumour, of course Meredith is going to get Derek into consult and use
this as a device to get Derek to get his hand sorted, in the “you’re the only
one who can fix this guy Derek” kind of way. I didn’t feel it. Apparently it’s
quite easy to get Derek to change his mind about getting surgery. What made
this story worse was the unveiling of Izzie 2.0 in the form of Wilson the
intern. Someone please tell me this girl is not the love of Alex’s life.
Please. I beg you. Alex needs a strong woman, he needs his very own Meredith or
Callie, not a baby brunette version of his ex-wife. Please say it ain’t so...
The liver transplant guy - the moment he
arrived and his partner started handing out gifts we knew he was a gonna. But
to make this worse we had to endure a painful over sentimental speech from him.
We were meant to feel emotion in this
scene, but all I felt was bile rising. We were meant to empathise (or something)
with the intern who cries during the speech but no attempt has been made
previously for me to care about this intern, whose name we don’t even know (we
do, but great effort is made by Cristina for us not to know). So in fact I
didn’t care about him. The message was that Cristina is going soft. Hmmm. I
don’t know about you but I want her to be the normal acid tongued blade she
used to be. This romantic medical story had a lot of potential, the subject in
itself was not the problem. The problem lay in the over-done sentiment.
Derek’s hand – during 906, Second Opinion
we had a superb scene between Callie and Derek, a moment of truth for them,
which quite frankly has been swept aside. Never have I felt such a disparity
between two consecutive episodes that highlight there are different lead
writers than 906 and 907. Up rocks the Callie of old, lacking in confidence,
all nervous and dithering and then also the Derek of old, a bit of an a**. I
ask this question – was the writing bad or did Sara Ramirez just have a bad day
at the office? My money is on the writing, because SaRa rarely ever has a bad
day.
And speaking of bad days at the office,
what’s happened to Arizona? Where is the BRILLIANT understated painful
performance from Jessica Capshaw of the early episodes playing Arizona the
tortured soul? Now we have this rather superficial ‘fake happy’ start back at
work and an unwelcome return of the Season 7 Callie/Arizona awkwardness. Seriously,
am I missing something here? I am not an amputee but I can’t imagine any
amputee watching this would find it anything but condescending,
patronizing and insulting. And since when have Callie and Arizona been ‘back together’
(emotionally) and on speaking terms? I am praying that the writers have more to
come here. I am praying very hard that this is paper over big cracks that the
writers plan to blow holes in in future episodes. I am praying on my knees that these aren’t Season 7
problems all over again. Though I will confess that it was lovely to see
Arizona and Alex back together again – one couple that should never split up.
You know it’s a bad episode (for me anyway)
when the Owen and Jackson stories were better than the others. And here they
were.
Finally Kevin McKidd gets something meaty
to dig his teeth into. I am confused by the crash action but I’m going to go
with it as it slowly becomes more clear where they’re going. And KMK did a great
job to move from ‘innocent sympathiser’ to ‘angry husband’. He nailed it with
the “we don’t work” - the biggest truth so far from either of Cristina or Owen.
His speech was probably the best writing of the episode. What I did like about
this arc was the use of Webber as ex-chief. Once again he is the oracle in that
hospital.
And it seems that Jackson can’t catch a
break with the women. After all his years on the show I am finally seeing this
character take shape. I did not see it with his relationship with Lexie which was
fake and over-worked. But I see a more developed mature character with April. Unfortunately
April herself is turning into Season 8 Lexie or more likely Teddy. She has no
other story going on and very few interactions with other characters; even her
trauma story was over taken by Arizona and Alex. I wonder if the plan is to exit
her at the end of Season 9? This would be a shame as up to mid Season 8 April
was a strong character (much stronger than Jackson) with a great back story.
And then there was the direction/editing –
the shot of the lawyer passing the signed confidentiality agreement was
over-shot, Alex eyeing up the intern in the bar was too obvious, Arizona’s fall
in the OR was staged and fake. I know it’s a TV show, of course it was staged
and fake but the idea is to make it look like it’s not with better angles,
sharper edits... In fact her earlier shot in the OR, stretching was also poorly
shot. This is a sign of not enough content, which is a shame because there is
content waiting to be written here.
So was there anything good here?
Of course! Meredith is pregnant AND the
first person she told was Derek. That makes us all happy. Bailey worrying about
her Christmas wedding – now that’s an episode I’m looking forward to.
I imagine many will be ecstatic and declare
this the best episode ever because we discover that Meredith is pregnant but
that is, to quote the show (I forget who said it), a band aid to cover a bullet
hole. The episode was written like a bad
Christmas movie, found on Hallmark or TCM. And whilst you may think from this
review that it was the worst episode ever, it was surely not. But when 901-906
range from pretty damn good to brilliant, then expectation for 907 is high.
There was one thing that I took some
bizarre pleasure from though – the squeaking wheel chair - which reminded me of
the film “Thoroughly Modern Millie” a very dark comic musical, set in the 20’s
featuring white slavery – “Sad to be all alone in the world” Squeak Squeak. (If
you’ve not seen the film then I guess you had to be there!).
I finish on a
quote, which is probably relevant for both my review and for this episode – from Kingsley Amis...
“If you can't annoy somebody, there is
little point in writing.”
Wow, that was fast. I like your review.
ReplyDeleteThis episode was a total train wreck..bad bad bad..*sigh* for all the reasons you describe and some..a disaster of epic proportion. Kepner/Avery as an frontline story is a bad idea never to be repeated. And what made it worse is that it was interwoven into Arizona's return with Kepner's freak out and Callie's (the writer should be fired) bits with Avery walking away. Are there no consequences when surgeons drop the ball to have their personal freak outs. This is the part of Grey that makes me want to throw my tv out the window. And yes the directing was atrocious
I could go on..
I totally agree!
ReplyDeleteWhile it was great that Meredith told Derek that she was pregnant first, and using the idea that April gave her with the shirt, which I thought was a nice touch, the rest of the episode was just a bunch of different stories mashed together with, as you said, bad directing/writing/editing.
I was thinking the same thing about Arizona and Callie, when did they become emotionally connected again? Can't imagine that the freak out in an earlier episode, where Callie tells Arizona she is also part of this new living situation (the one in the shower) and then watching a cooking show on television would fix all their issues...
Really am looking forward to Bailey's wedding, but this character has become the comic relief of the show, which I think is a shame, since Bailey was always such a strong, powerful, and a little scary person who now turned into this emotional, totally in love, giving (and asking) people advice on their relationships, she didn't use to care about those kinds of things...
I could go on for a while, but it is only one episode that was disappointing so far this season, which is a miracle when comparing it to previous seasons.
I like your Thoroughly Modern Millie reference. I haven't thought of that film in years.
ReplyDeleteThree weeks pregnant is waaaaay too soon to be getting Zola that t-shirt, especially with a hostile uterus. But it's nice how she told Derek.
Arizona is finally becoming more enjoyable instead of self-indulgent whining. She had a right, but it wasn't fun to watch.
I didn't think it was possible for April to be even more annoying, but her speech thanking God at the end did it.
I wondered how they were going to get Owen and Cristina back together but I think it's okay so far. It's true, they didn't work before but now Cristina has become less of a wooden puppet and more of a real girl thanks to Dr. Thomas. Meanwhile, we know Owen wants Cristina still (because he convinced the new cardio attending to hire her back and freaked out when he thought she had overstepped the lines and was going to get fired) but now he's realized that still being married to her would jeopardize their court case and he asked for a divorce so that she and the other doctors would win the suit. So just as she realizes she still wants him, he shuts the door because that's better for her. Very Shakespearean, I'm impressed.
Totally getting sick of April preaching Jesus every damn episode, ok she want's to be good christian child etc etc but to throw it in Jackson's face and spit out those words the girl has no morals or feeling's for the other person. He was right to end it and walk away.
ReplyDeleteCan see why you say this episode was a train wreak it did seem very rushed and edited very badly.
Like most people the only good part was Mer telling Derek she is pregnant and telling him first, although i would of preferred the bitch baby tear's to come as well, oh and i would of preferred if the pregnancy announcement was the last scene.
To end it on a bad note of Owen wanting the divorce really put a downer on the whole thing.
Anyway moving on look forward to the next episode and the arrival of Liz Shepherd.
I actually liked this episode, besides the fact that we found out Mer was pregnant.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed it, and drom what i've read people rdidn't seem to like at all. Arizona getting back to work and be semi-happy again was really cool and it was about time she changed her attitued towardrs Callie. ( and no, this will not be anything like season 7, Callie and Arizona are not drifting apart, and we'll be able to see them together all shiney and smiley very soon, according to Shonda's tweets, ha)
I don't know about Jo, we don't know really know her that well, so maybe it's just a matter of time before we see how She and Izzie are that much alike. Maybe much, maybe nothing.
And yes April needs to go at the end of the season. Never liked her, always seemed a completely not interesting character to me. When the news was out about the plane crash, i wanted so badly to April be on that plane, so they could give her a proper storyline, not by killing her but by injuring her somehow.
I actually liked the episode. It was nice to many of the main characters get a separate storyline.
ReplyDeleteP.S: Reviews should not be tagged as "SpoilerTV Article".
Thank you for your comment.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comment.
ReplyDeleteYou are quite right to pull me up on judging Jo too quickly but I saw signs of Izzie. But maybe I'm looking for them. I am a bit anti-Izzie to be honest.
I didn't say that April needed to go at the end of the season I said that it looked like they were limiting her exposure to other characters and story lines. I actually think she's a great character but much under-used
My point about Arizona and Callie is driven from the fact that they do not discuss their issues. They brush them under the carpet and did this continually during Season 7. This episode feels like they are heading down that path. Even Sara Ramirez acknowledges that - see her interview with the Huffington Post
http://www.spoilertv.com/2012/10/greys-anatomy-season-9-sara-ramirez.html
Q. As a fan, I just kept hoping that Arizona would snap out of it after that shower scene and realize they needed to start moving forward again.
A. No, that's not gonna be easy. And I think even if you see things on the surface, I don't know that it speaks to what's really healing on the inside. It's going to really depend on how much the writers want these characters to really evolve or how much they want them to stay stuck in their usual patterns, leading to a dysfunctional relationship.
I think they are trying to illustrate to us just how immature April is in terms of relationships. She has stated on previous occasion - in the bar I think - that she's never had a boyfriend so her experience and maturity is lacking. I don't find her generally a self centred character but in this aspect she is and you have to feel sorry for Jackson (can't believe I'm writing that).
ReplyDeleteYes, I too was disappointed no bitch baby tears lol!
Re. Owen, can't see he has any choice really. Cristina walked away quite categorically. But hey, Arizona walked away too and look where they are.
Always love a Shepherd, bring it on.
I'm reserving any further judgement on Arizona till I see how they are going to deal with hers and Callie's relationship. I like that she's trying but I found the dynamic between her and C to be very fake.
ReplyDeleteVery Shakespearean! LOL! I like.
Thanks.
You are absolutely right about Bailey, but I'm hoping that the second half of the season will be more serious for her. Get the wedding out of the way and then we can forget it. Clearly Ben isn't becoming a regular character...yet so they have to build her medical stories up or lose her. According to a recent interview she wants to stay on the show so they have to do something.
ReplyDeleteThanks.
Thank you my dear. I think I find it more interesting to write about the episodes I don't like rather than fawning over those I do. And this season has been brilliant up till this episode.
ReplyDeleteWith any luck the Kepner/Avery story is over now, though I suspect this will run for a while as he pines after her and she suddenly becomes a man-iser (opposite of womaniser - is there such a thing?).
I'm glad someone agrees with me that this was a disaster of epic proportion because having read other comments on other pages and sites there is a lot of blindness to poor writing and directing. Meredith's pregnant, therefore the world is a beautiful one. I'm actually sorry we found out that she's pregnant in this episode. The cynical side of me thinks Shonda stormed into the writers office and said "this is crap, put in something to redeem it". Okay that didn't happen but still....
Yeah she will stay on and I hope her medical stories are going to be a little more spectacular, but the fact remains that as of now she is a device that is used to insert some comic relief in-between scenes, and yes it is funny, but I loved Bailey the way she was in the first few seasons and I haven't seen that character in a long time.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you in terms of April's storyline. I'm one of very few who would say that April is one of my favorite characters and I honestly don't think that will change. I'm just frustrated with her. I really hope that she has interactions with the other characters and I hope she calms down a little and starts thinking about others instead of herself only. Maybe Jackson breaking up with her will be a wake up call, but I really hope they do so much more with her character. Apparently she stars a friendship with one of the interns so we will see how that plays out. I also hope we get to see her teach instead of her ranting about how she is not a good Christian because I think she has potential to be a character with a solid story, maybe know a little bit more about her background so we can understand why she is so wound up. Wishful thinking I guess.
ReplyDeleteOver all i didn't mind the episode. I also wasn't too surprised that Meredith is pregnant. Also frustrated with Owen and Christina. It's been dragging too long since the end of season 7. Alex's character is just meh i'd love to see him teach and be a better surgeon and hopefully not get forcefully pushed to be with Jo (who is actually the only intern i haven't warmed up to yet) but we'll see. The next episode focuses on the interns so we'll see how that plays out.
Agree-It's almost as if they thought that they didn't have to put much effort into making a well-written, cohesive epi simply because it was going to end with Mer being pregnant, and telling Derek first- ahead of Cristina!
ReplyDeleteI was totally baffled by the lawsuit gunning for the hospital, still am- but I'm willing to wait and see, though it seems like just a ploy to bring Crowen back together: First he asks for a divorce to protect her, but the love is too great or whatever, there will be several tortured gazes on his part and confusion and hurt for her, maybe some grabby kisses, and then it will all explode and Bam! They're back together!
WRT April, I'm not religious, but I'd like to see them have her deal with her religious beliefs without making her look like a bipolar lunatic- And could Jackson grow some spine, please! This is the second time he's in it with a woman who is not into the relationship.
And Bailey's BCB Avatar has to go- ASAP! Whatever happened to the strong, no-nonsense professional Dr.Bailey who was the moral compass of the hospital? Call me what ever, but I just find it very odd, and CW certainly appears to have trouble carrying off the sex kitten version of Bailey.
I found Arizona's story reasonably credible- She got thru the day, she was glad, Callie's getting close to being appreciated, I hope. And I loved the point Callie made to Jackson about Derek being scared- too scared to commit to a surgery yet.
Love how Richard has been Yoda these past couple of seasons- Not being the Chief makes him more Chiefly! I always thought he'd end up with Bailey- but I guess they'll just be work husband and wife!
I hope they let Mer have a healthy child this time- and that the interns stay more in the background, after the next epi when they will be pushed to the front..
With Arizona and Callie, I wouldn't really call it problems. Arizona was really really pissed because Callie couldn't save her leg, which is understandable. And over time, Arizona became less and less angry because she realized more and more that amputation was the only sane solution. Which is why she's not pissed at Callie anymore. I wouldn't call it grateful or loving yet, but they're married, so since Arizona's come to terms with her/their situation, there's no reason to blame Callie anymore. But since they're married, there's reason to, you know, try to live together, normally, non-angry.
ReplyDeleteAnd Callie knew all along that Arizona's anger was only temporary because losing a leg is severe trauma. So, the way I see it, once there's no more anger, there's really no problem. Arizona could've apologized, but she might have off-screen or will do it in the episodes to come. And Callie apologized enough already.
I mean, there has to be a process within their relationship, but we can't complain about it not taking place, only about it not being on-screen, I'd say.
Totally agreed when it comes to Bailey. Her giddy side is fun to watch, but I really miss the serious and sincere and bossy Bailey. She's losing her mojo.
ReplyDeleteBut I think the reason for that is to allow for Meredith, Cristina and Alex to be the serious and bossy attendings - at least for a while. I hope it doesn't last too long.
These two still have very big problems, either Shonda will write the or paper over the cracks and ignore them. But currently this is a dysfunctional relationship.
ReplyDeleteIt's not dysfunctional. It was bumpy, for a reason, and now they've worked it out and it's getting better. Where is that dysfunctional? It functions. Not perfectly, but nothing's perfect.
ReplyDeleteIt's completely dysfunctional. They have not had ONE conversation on screen since the leg came off. We absolutely cannot assume that they magic'd all their problems away off screen. So I don't see how they've worked it out as you say. The only thing that functions is Arizona's ability to get herself to work and be somewhat productive. There is no evidence at all that her and Callie are anything other than awkwardly civil.
ReplyDeleteI sort of resent Alex being with someone who's so far behind his journey. I got used to it with Lexie and Mark but I'm not sure I want that for Alex.
ReplyDeleteMeredith and a healthy, drama free pregnancy. Hmmm. Let me think about that. I could get some robust odds on that happening!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the episode...it was not amazing but it wasnt god awful in my opinion. I would have to say it was the 2nd weakest episode of this season. Ill be fine w/ this episode if this coming weeks episode blows my socks off, which im hopeful for.
ReplyDeleteApril/jackson have to have some tension or drama otherwise they will be back to the non interesting characters they have been. While April having a pregnancy scare is an obvious cliche, i think its absolutely accurate- most virgins loose there virginitys when they are teenagers and dont think properly about repercutions of there actions- i think this is the path for April. She is just acting and not thinking about consequences just living in the moment which is a major spiritual struggle for her as im sure it is for a lot of people.
Mer/Der - not at all suprised they are pregnant. Its pretty common in real life and on tv shows that when someone adopts the likelyhood of them concieving naturally increases, it was just a matter of time when. It was nice to finally see Derek get involved in his own recovery, i mean he is the nerve guy. His input could prove major success to his recovery. I think Derek has benn resistant b/c he trully doesnt want to recover.
Crowen- I clapped when he said he wanted a divorce! I dont like them as a couple it doesnt work for me. but i see what the writers are doing here. The ultimate selfless act Owen can make is to Divorce the woman he loves in order for her and others to win the suit. Once this information is revealed by an "accident sip" from someone it will make Cristina fall in love w/ Owen all over again. However, I think this couple is still doomed b/c they want fundametally different things i.e. CHILDREN/ NO CHILDREN!!!!
Bailey- tender, frazzled Bailey still offering comedic relief so im fine w/ her for now. I do want strong NAZI back soon though.
Chief is YODA that is all
CALZONA- I feel like both AZ and Callie are putting on a show as to not rock the boat of AZ return to work. These two relationship is not remotely close to being back to normal. The good thing about these two is they keep their personal relationship outside of the hospital and in the home where its suppose to be. Has there been a lil headway in their recovery sure its obvious in the touching and the lil pecks. But i think that might be more of Shonda and Co. throwing the crazed fans a bone to quite them down.
Alex and AZ relationship is getting stronger but i forsee a falling out once its revealed he made the cut.
For CALZONA and Alex i think its a lot of smoke and mirros in this arc- we are still in this wait and see mode w/ this storyline
I agree i was hoping that Constance Zimmer's character might be his new love interest but she is only there for about 4 episodes.
ReplyDeletemaybe we'll get the bitch baby tear's at an ultrasound appointment, that will appese me for now.
ReplyDelete
