The SpoilerTV 2012 Reader Survey - The RESULTS Posted

Oct 23, 2012

Hey all,

Recently we asked our readers to complete a simple survey to help us better understand our readers and what features we could look to improve. We have received over 600 replies which is awesome, thank you!.

In terms of New Feature feedback we had a lot of great feedback. One thing we noticed was that people were asking for features that we already have in some respects.

Here are the most common requests that already exist today.

TV Listings/Schedule/Episodes
We already have these in our Primetime Listing/What's on Tonight that you can find in the Start and Features Menu. You can also access it direct here.

We also have all known Episode/Titles/Dates in our Episode Database here and in the Calendar view here.

Customise Show Specific Posts
This is already available in our SpoilerTV Dashboard which you can access here. Make sure you login and select your Favourite shows.

Forum
Several people asked if we could have a Forum. We already do! Here :)

Multi-Language Support
We have recently added the ability to translate the text of the page into more than 60 countries. [LINK]

Track Renewals/Cancellations
We already have a couple of place you can track this.
- The SpoilerTV Cancellation Predictor Table [LINK]
- Show Status Report [LINK]
- TV Scorecard 2013/14 [LINK]

Banner Changes
You can already select your own banner. Click on Banner Selector from the Help or Features Menu

Search Box
We already have on the site. It's in the right hand sidebar.

Getting Notified of New Posts for your shows
Again we have a couple of options here for you. Use the Browser Extensions to get alerted.

We will be looking at other possibilities in the future.

New Features

We also had lots of great feedback about real new features. We'll be evaluating all of these with the team and try to see which ones we can implement both technically and practically.

Here are just a sample of some of the features that we'll be looking at adding in the future.

- Email Alerts on Specific Shows.
- Ratings Info on our Episode Database
- Improved Android and iOS applications
- Facebook pages for Individial Shows (This has started [LINK])
- More competitions and giveaways
- Better Mobile versions (m.spoilertv.com)

Below are some things that we can't change currently as they are out of our control

- The comment Dislike feature is currently something we cannot disable. We've contacted Disqus to see if this can be disabled for our site.
- Firefox/Safari/IE Extension. We don't have the time or the money to develop our own extensions. We highly recommend using the Chrome extension

We also had some very nice comments

"Nothing. It's awesome."
"It's great as it is."
"I can't think of any: your website is really great!"
"Nope, you're pretty much covered! Amazing site, btw!"
"None, I like it the way it is"
"None, the new writers you've added have been fun, like the ratings graph that is new."
"Everything is good. "
"Nothing. The site is fine as it is."
"Didn't know all these others existed, so need to try them out first, but looks to me like you have it pretty well covered. Thanks."
"Great site to keep up with my favorite show, Castle!"
"i have no idea:)))) the site is verry good already for now i wouldnt change a thing"
"It's perfect as it is "

And our strangest feature request!!!

"I'd make it smell like bananas"

  1. Why would people want dislike on comments disabled? I hope disqus DOES NOT disable the dislike comments feature on this site.

    ReplyDelete
  2. oh! Where was theses questions/polls being asked? I missed them! :/

    ReplyDelete
  3. Because it's mean, tbh, and doesn't really do anything. Comments are disliked even when it makes no sense for them to be.

    ReplyDelete
  4. ..all answers ..awesome..everyone AGREE..about the less FAVORITE..thing..REVIEW AND RATING..there a waist of time special the RATING..never is accurate . lot of good shows die for that stupid thing no all people got the little machine behind the tv set could check which shows we watch and the.REVIEWS.that really cost problems and controversy.UNLESS you had a person really monitoring that could work remember THE LANCELOT POST.was disgusting almost one day we had to accept all the garbage posted in that area at the first move of something racist of truly out of content.the tech must block..PERIOD..could create parameters or limits if a post is flag may be more that 20 times something strange or bad happen is a good way to improve the system is a SUGGESTION,thanks for the poll e hope help improve and enhance the page

    ReplyDelete
  5. ..no way they cancel the comments.the way we speak help them improve good things and eliminate the bad ones

    ReplyDelete
  6. The top 3 fav shows are not the best shows

    ReplyDelete
  7. They wouldn't cancel the comments, they'd just disable the "dislike" feature on the comments. Two totally different things.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Disliking a comment isn't "mean". If someone dislikes one of my comments, I don't take it personally. Disabling the "dislike comments" feature is not necessary, IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Oh, I don't take it personally either. (Sometimes, I'm confused by the comments that get disliked, honestly, but I usually just laugh and shrug it off.) But it seems like comments get disliked for no reason occasionally and it might be a little mean to do so.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Wow. I'm shocked so few use STV+. It's great to keep track of things.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Apparently, I missed them, too. Where were they????

    ReplyDelete
  12. Yep, we were as well. I think most people don't know it exists so we'll be trying to make more people aware of it.

    ReplyDelete
  13. @twitter-275284244:disqus Never said they were. They are the most popular.

    ReplyDelete
  14. @yahoo-H3CCGFE25KXUGFXFMQYIGMSAKI:disqus They were posted here for several days

  16. I saw the survey bought I was busy so I thought I would fill it out later, but when I got back from University, the survey was closed.

    ReplyDelete
  17. It always HAS been possible to dislike a comment. The difference is, before you had to go to the trouble of composing a reply to explain exactly what about the comment you dislike. And, of course, you were not anonymous then. Now, it's random, anonymous, and confusing, and it's not possible for the original author to contest.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I'm surprised that so many people dislike the reviews so much! I for one appreciate them. They're a good read. Oh well.

    ReplyDelete
  19. @twitter-630451751:disqus I don't think people are saying that. They are saying which their least popular is. They may well still like them but not as much as the other types of content.

Being primarily a spoiler site this is quite understandable :)

    ReplyDelete
  20. Exactly.

Before you had to actually try to be smart and give a reason, or just be a troll. Now you can drive-by troll. Or in my case have a loser stalker who I once disagreed immensely with dislike all my comments just because. Yeah you know who you are. LOL!
Now how many dislikes can I get for this I know there will be one, but it doesn't count.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I voted that I like the poll the best mainly because that is where i get to read all the thoughts of everyone fresh after they see the show. But I also like the promos, and reviews equally. Those just tend to have less amusing comments.

I just wish we had a place to do speculation on the main site here. Like maybe create a speculation thread just for this site (an example would be like the Special Fringe Friday thread on Fridays. I would love to see an "[insert show name here] speculation thread" for some of the shows.)

I know the forum has them, but as you see not everyone on this site sees, visits, or even knows the forum exists.

    ReplyDelete
  22. The Ratings being one of the least favorite surprises me a bit, but at the same time it doesn't. Personally, it's one of my 3 favorites on the site. Besides the table, I like when the demo numbers are available early. Granted, they are usually changed slightly by the time everything comes out, but at least they are an approximate number. All that said, the early article does leave me confused more often than not.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I gave you a like :)

    ReplyDelete
  24. I think you would have many people disagree with your statement. Castle is a very good show and it is designed for the person who wants to think about things. So is Fringe. So if you want mindless entertainment that is up to you but they are very good shows!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Same here for both your comments! :)

    ReplyDelete
  26. I come to this site more often than any other, seems friendlier. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  27. I'm still surprised with the continually lofty percentage of lurkers on this site.

    ReplyDelete
  28. It's actually more than the chart shows. We get around 30,000 individuals who visit the site on any give day, around 200 of those comment on a daily basis. So basically 1 out every 150 visitors leave a comment. Although I'm told that is quite good. A lot of sites have 1 in 500 or more rations

    ReplyDelete
  29. Wow. That is surprising on both counts - your percentage of commenters to visitors and the average percentage of commenters to visitors. If one in 500 is average then you are doing pretty well (1 in 150) with commenting. I guess that reinforces that STV is a visitor friendly community.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Yep, I remember when we first started back on 2007. We hardly got any comments despite getting a lot of hits still. I think it was around 1 comment around 2,000-3,000 people. Now that we have a better commenting system and the community has built up in those 5 years we're seeing that ratio get smaller and smaller which is nice.

    ReplyDelete
  31. A huge reason that it feels mean is because they should really be labeled "Agree" and "Disagree" instead of like and dislike. Like and Dislike have an inherent, knee jerk, personal connotation. Most often they're used, these days, in a personal way. Sometimes, even if you are aware, on an intellectual level, that it is a reference to whether someone agrees or disagrees with what you said, occasionally you have that moment where it feels personal.

    ReplyDelete
  32. The badges were the main reason I started commenting (and never shut up) I wanted to play! There was no was I was getting a Twitter account, but it was required to play. :-D Then I discovered there was no way I'd *ever* have the time to earn 4000 points in a week. So, I started trying work myself up out of Top 250. :-)

Now that most of that is gone (I still get a new badge every now and then and the chuckle that gives me is a tad embarrassing) I just enjoy the discussion. You guys have worked hard to make sure this is a friendly place where people can agree, disagree, and agree to disagree. Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  33. I expected Castle to be on top, and I'm pleased to see that Supernatural took 2nd and 3rd in the favorite show category. I'm also surprised to see how many people don't comment or use the Badgeville system. I mean, I know there are a lot of lurkers, but seeing the pie graph really made it a reality. I hope more people will participate in the future!

    ReplyDelete
  34. I'm trying to come up with a way to say this that doesn't sound weird, but I don't know if it's going to happen haha... I dislike the dislike feature because it gives people an opportunity to react to legitimate comments negatively because they're being petty or nitpicky. I think it's especially prevalent on the Supernatural pages where (though I'm speculating here) a lot of posts are disliked because people want to vote down another person's love for certain characters. Altogether, I think it just brings down people's perfectly legitimate responses for dumb reasons. A comment could be totally true to what occurred on the TV screen and cranky people hit "dislike" because they didn't like what went down.

Wow, I really started to ramble. Anyway, that's why I'm not a huge fan.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Right? That pie chart really threw me for a loop. It's so weird to be in that small little wedge of people who contribute. Well, those who actually voted, of course. I suppose there are a number of contributors who didn't take the survey. And I've veered off topic. It's not the first time haha

    ReplyDelete
  36. I don't mind the reviews, but I'm not a huge fan of the recaps. I'm sure it's great for people who missed the episode when it aired, or for those who want to get a quick glimpse before watching on their own time, but I was never a fan of reading a summary of what I just saw. I do like the reviews, though. I'm interested in seeing how others break down and analyze an episode.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Well, let's put it in perspective. It looks like less than 1000 people took the survey and STV hosts around 30,000 unique visitors a day. So, there may be more people contributing than indicated in the survey.

    ReplyDelete
  38. While I do see why people don't like the dislike feature on disque I think that it is actually very helpful because there are times where I really didn't agree with a comment but I didn't want to get in a very heated disagreement over it and I know that I've expressed my disagreement of the comment by clicking the dislike.

SpoilerTV is a great place when it doesn't have really flamed disagreements (I've had my share of people replying to my comments with huge disagreement of what I had to say and that really offended me and hurt me. I'd prefer a gazillion dislikes over a few comments that really hurt me and go beyond a good discussion).

I mean the mods here are fantastic about supervising but still they can't supervise all the time.

    Just my two cents ;)

    ReplyDelete
  39. That is true but it allows people to express themselves without starting an actual flaming war on site especially in regards to Supernatural. Besides when there are the polls about "who is your favorite brother, etc" the pettiness is pretty rife/nitpicky in the actual comments not the the like/dislike feature.

But we'll have to agree to disagree on this one :)

    ReplyDelete
  40. YES!! This is so logical and it would be appropriate for a site like SpoilerTV where not everyone agrees.

    ReplyDelete
  41. The problem is that it is either up vote or down vote, which has the unfortunate ability to push the comment up or down the page (or thread) when viewing the page in its default view. AKA Best.

So the comment with the most up votes is the first one seen, and the one that most will respond to. The comment with the most down votes will conversely appear at the low end of the page (or thread) and get less traffic. Of course there is always the balance between up and down votes that helps.
Then there is the added problem of random anonymous trolls coming here without any contribution, and down voting either because they don't like a particular commentator, or just to do it. Therein lies the root of the problem. I personally think if you don't like something someone says, then you should have the balls to say it to the person in the form of a reply.
I think that allowing anonymous comments is fine, but that is what allows the anonymous up or down votes. In the old discuss you had likes and not dislikes. So if you disliked something you either ignored it, or had your say. With the down votes it is possible for a perfectly relevant and well written comment to be pushed out of sight to the bottom just because some idiot(s) decided to be trolls. Sadly it happens here more than most realize.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Also true. I suppose I'm slightly a fan if people express themselves through disliking a comment instead of inflammatory words, but I don't think that's always the case. But you're right, let's agree to disagree haha

    ReplyDelete
  43. Oh, is that why I can no longer see comments in order of posting? The likes and dislikes affect ordering? Then I need to send disqus support a feature request. Because really if that's their default sorting mechanism I want to request the ability to set a default in my preferences. At least now I know why the sorting has been insane since we got the new version.

Don't get me wrong. I don't support the down arrow. (oh! though I appear to have earned a down arrow my last comment. I think that's my first. :-) I feel a weird kind of pride.)

@rtterry3225:disqus said "In the old discuss you had likes and not dislikes. So if you disliked something you either ignored it, or had your say. " I think this makes for more constructive interesting discussion. I enjoy hearing other opinions. Opens my mind and even if I don't change my opinion I may be driven to think my opinion through a little more carefully. And I just love to talk about story and character.

The like button makes since in that it avoids a lot of "ditto" type of comments, but disagreements are more interesting if constructively stated.

    ReplyDelete
  44. If you go up to the top off the comments there is a discussion button on the far left with a little arrow to the right of it. If you click that little arrow you will see that you can sort the comments as either "Best", "Oldest", or "Newest". If you pick "oldest" it puts the comment in order of oldest first going down to the newest so that you can follow the entire discussion from comment #1 all the way to comment # XXXXX. If you select "newest" it will organize them with the latest comments at the top and the oldest at the bottom. "Best" organizes them according to votes. I personally like "Oldest" so I can see the first comment and so on...

    ReplyDelete
  45. Awesome! Thanks. I have looked at that menu before and it did not register in my mind. Therefore, regarding my rant about the sorting, I say - in the words of the great Rosanne Rosanadana.... Nevermind.

    ReplyDelete
  46. FYI - Unfortunately there's a bug with this feature. The sort order doesn't stick. I have to re-select it from the menu every time I visit a page.

I have posted a bug report at the Disqus website.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Hmm, it works for me.

Do you have cookies enabled? It needs those I believe to remember your settings? Also what browser are you using? Does it preserve the sort order if you use a different browser?

    ReplyDelete
  48. Yeah I think you have to let cookies be enabled. If you are deleting your cookies when you clear you privacy info it will reset all defaults. You also may have it set up to delete cookies every time you close your browser, that will create that problem too. I make it a habit to not delete cookies when i clear my cache and history. I do clean them out about once every 3 months, but not every time because It makes me have to sign in to everything again. I am the only soul using this computer so it is not a problem for me to do so.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I'd bet a nickel its a bug. Cookies are enabled for spoilerTV and disqus. Also, if it were cookies I would expect the menu to always show the default (Best) checked. Since the menu reflects my setting I think the software isn't properly responding to the setting unless the user re-selects it. That's while I filed the bug report with Disqus. There were also other reports in their KB, but without specifics. Hopefully they can get it fixed pretty quickly.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Chrome on both linux and Mac OS. My cookies are on. As I mentioned, I had the impression that the cookies is being read properly because the menu is correct. The comments just weren't properly sorted.)

Didn't check Safari. But I just checked in Firefox and it's working. So, maybe it's Chrome associated. I'll add that to my bug report. I hope this isn't another non-reproducible issue. I had that happen with Disqus before (couldn't log in on Chrome but could in Chromium) and it didn't get fixed until the new version came out.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Ah gotchya. What browser do you use? I use chrome, and don't have issues.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Tried in Chrome on linux and MacOS. @DarkUFO reminded me to check other browsers. I tried Firefox and it's working perfectly.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Check your settings in Chrome and make sure that cookies are allowed. You said that you had the impression they were working, but to me that doesn't sound like a surety.Unless you don't mind Firefox, personally I hate Firefox. Do you know how to check your settings on chrome? Forgive me if I sound condescending. I'm not trying to be, I just want to help.

    ReplyDelete
  54. No, you don't sound condescending. I did double check my settings. I'm regularly going between two OSs and as many as 4 browsers because of various issues so I double checked those settings specifically. My settings here at the office are what I expected and what we've been discussing. I'm just hoping I haven't run into another non-repeatable "me only" issue. :-) That's how I wound up using Chromium. I did *something* and left myself in a a bizarre state that Disqus tech support couldn't reproduce. I was fully aware that one was UBD but neither of us could figure it out.

Thanks for all of your helpful suggestions. Unless you work on Disqus, I know you didn't have to expend the energy trying to help.

    ReplyDelete
  55. No prob. I hope you get it figured out. :) Let me know if you do.
