Tonight's episode not only showed the 'Word of God' tablet put up for auction, the price for which wasn't any usual currency that we know of, be it dwarf gold even, we also got to see how Dean's time in Purgatory killing monsters was affecting him in present day and a bonus with the revelation of Castiel's fate!
We begin in Chicago, Illinois where a banker is leading a customer to the safety deposit boxes and when it is revealed that he requires box 1 to be opened, the lady is a bit surprised but nevertheless she removes it saying that after the bank had gone under renovations, box 1 was shifted inside another one but is still safe. The man opens his box to reveal that it contains a bone, but it is not just any bone rather 'an extremely valuable bone.' When the banker lady asks if she can help him with anything else, he pauses for a moment before saying he would like to make a withdrawal and the next thing we see is the lady's blood being splattered against the wall! Cue the title card!
Meanwhile, Dean is grabbing a bite with Sam and Kevin, the latter being adamant in his decision to check up on his mother. He and Dean argue over the fact that even though Crowley must have surrounded Kevin's mother with Demons to protect her and use her as bait, she is all alone and Kevin needs to see her. Eventually Dean agrees and they head off. We next see them in Neighbor, Michigan outside Kevin's house where they are observing her from the Impala through binoculars; Kevin claims that his mother looks fine, a bit sad but okay. Instead of jumping out of the car and running home, Dean stops Kevin and points out the mailman and gardner who clearly are being possessed by Demons seeing as they aren't doing a good job at pretending. In no time, Dean and Sam manage to reach the side of Kevin's house without being noticed and quickly get rid of both the demons with Ruby's knife. Inside the house, we see Kevin's mother talking to her friend Eunice saying that she is waiting for her son to return and no sooner do the words leave her mouth do we see Kevin ring the bell! Just as Linda Tran opens the door, Sam and Dean give her the Borax greeting and after confirming that she's clean, Kevin hugs his mother. Just then, the brothers get a whiff of sulphur and rushing into the hall see a demon on the verge of leaving Eunice's body to escape; luckily Sam's quick thinking stops the demon from getting out as Sam chants in Latin allowing Dean to stab the demon, killing Eunice as well.
Now that the demons have been dealt with, its time for Dean, Sam and Kevin to explain the situation to Linda who seems to take the news about Demons and Prophets more easier than we'd expect. She even comments that Kevin being a 'Prophet of the Lord has a nice ring to it.' While Dean and Sam try to convince Linda that a safe house is the best option for her, she doesn't agree and insists on coming along to protect Kevin who has no say in the matter. Dean says that there are conditions to coming with him and Sam - hex bags and anti-possession tattoo's, Linda and Kevin agree. In a lighter scene, we see that while getting their tattoo's done, Linda is calm and quiet about the whole matter while Kevin on the other hand whimpers his way through. When Dean asks his brother about the spell, Sam explains that it was a reverse exorcism spell which works when the words are spoken backwards - Genius!
The four of them head to their next stop, a bus station in Wyoming which seems to be Kevin's hiding place for the "Word of God" tablet he had taken from Crowley. After checking to be sure that its safe, Dean opens the locker only to find... a diaper bag? It turns out that the bus station has been broken into several times over the past few weeks and the person responsible for the locker break-ins happens to be the previous security guard who is currently in jail! When the Winchesters go and talk to their thief in the hopes of learning where the tablet is now, the ex-security guard demands a deal. While Sam is discussing his options, we see Dean's flashback to a monster-interrogation while searching for Castiel with Benny. While reliving his old memory wherein Dean had the monster by knife-point in the present, he grabs the security guard and strangles him with his tie demanding to know where the tablet is! In the flashback we see that the monster finally gives up Castiel's location - a clearance near the stream which is about a day's trip and when Dean says he believes him, the monster is killed. Back in prison, after getting the whereabouts of the tablet, Dean lets the security guard live as he and Sam head out.
With Kevin and Linda in tow, their next stop is at a pawn shop where Dean threatens the man there to give up the tablet unless he wants it the hard way. Instead of agreeing, the man points casually to video camera's all around the shop clearly saying that he's unfazed by Dean's words. In steps Linda who comments about the Ferrari Spider parked outside saying that its unlikely to be registered and since the tax hasn't been paid, if there was to be an audit then the total amount reaches up to $10,000! Deciding that its better to give up the location of the tablet, the man at the pawn shop sends them to a motel, room no. 126 which Sam knocks on but there is no answer. Before anything else can be said or done, a mysterious man dressed in a suit and hat appears behind them claiming to be the right Hand of Plotus. He is here to meet Kevin and hands the Prophet an invitation to an auction where the 'Word of God' tablet is up for sale. Dean tells the Hand that they are protecting the Prophet and no matter how much protection this auction will have, they aren't letting Kevin go in alone. The Hand agrees to add three more attendees and vanishes leaving Dean and Sam to come up with a plan about how to win the tablet auction seeing as they have a lack of funds. At first Sammy turns his head to the Impala but after being threatened by Dean, they scratch that idea and instead come up with the plan to have Kevin memorize the spell on the tablet before the auction! When they reach there, everyone walks through a metal scanner and when Dean sets off all the alarms, he reluctantly gives up all his weapons including Ruby's Knife but makes it clear that he will get it back. Inside, they pass by several glass cases which contain priceless items including Thor's hammer 'Mjölnir' but unfortunately for them, the 'Word of God' has been covered up. Just as they realize the plan is a bust, Dean, Sam and Kevin encounter Crowley who has just arrived and claims to have known that this was their plan.
The King of Hell apologizes rather offhandedly to Kevin about snapping Channing's neck and when he comments on seeing Linda, Crowley is met with a right hook to his face from her! Just as things look tense, the auctioneer arrives along with the Hand who announces that the auction is about to begin. Dean follows Sam and the others but is stopped by someone who claims to have known Cas! The man, Alfie who is a fast food worker reveals himself to be Samandiriel, one of the angels who are protecting the tablet. When Dean is asked about Cas by the angel, he explains that the two of them had been sent to Purgatory, he is out but when Dean doesn't reply where Cas is, the angel understands and we get another flashback - this time with Castiel himself!
We see that Cas is indeed by the stream when Dean and Benny reach there as Dean calls out to the angel and greets Cas with a hug who does not hug Dean back and instead demands to know how they found him. After Benny is introduced, Dean asks Cas about how he is only to have the angel claim he is perfectly sane as far as the definition of sanity goes. When Benny asks Castiel why he bailed in the start, Dean defends Cas but is taken aback when Cas admits that he ran away because he had to. In order to keep Dean safe, Cas had to stay away and even though he knew Dean prayed to him, he did not listen because being an angel and stuck in Purgatory, there was a price on his head, there weren't just monsters after him but Leviathans as well and so he made sure that Dean stayed safe. When Cas tells Dean and Benny to leave and says he will stay back, Dean says that he will not leave without taking Cas with him; even if they have to go up against the Leviathan, Dean is taking Cas along. Cas says that he understands.
Back to the auction, Crowley recognizes the Angel there and taunts Sammy as they all begin pooling their money together only to be stumped when they realize that the auction is being conducted using Dwarf Gold among other things. Deciding to move to Plan C, Dean leaves the hall to find the restroom only to follow one of the demons wheeling a cart of auction items to a locked door and when Dean bumps into him, he slips the key but finds that there are two demons inside guarding all the artifacts including the Word of God which is visible to Dean. Disgruntled, the older Winchester returns to the auction hall where Thor's hammer is auctioned off to the man from the bank we see in the beginning of the episode. The next artifact is the 'Word of God' tablet which is first bid for by Crowley who makes an offer of $3 Billion which is countered by Samandiriel who bids the Mona Lisa, Crowley states he'll give the real Mona Lisa who is topless but the angel bids Vatican City forcing Crowley to bid the Moon! The Hand of Plotus then comments the reserve has not been met yet and adds Kevin to the lot. In an attempt to save Kevin, Linda jumps in saying that she bids her soul forcing Crowley to bid his own soul but the auctioneer claims that the King of Hell has no soul, the sacrifice behind Linda's decision to give up her soul is the price he needs and agrees. Linda's soul in exchange for Kevin and the Tablet. At the end of the auction, the hall is empty save for Dean and Sam who are talking to Linda about her decision. When she asks them if losing her soul will hurt and whether she'll die or not, Sam tells her that she will be alive but wishes that she wasn't. The Hand arrives and says it is time for the exchange but Linda asks for a few minutes of alone time.
While she is left to herself, Samandiriel reveals himself to Linda and explains that he and the other angels can protect Kevin but she reminds him that the last time they tried to do that, all the angels died and Kevin went missing for a year; she declines his offer and chooses to take her chances with the Winchester's. Outside we notice that the man who now is in possession of Mjölnir is still there; the auctioneer signals for Kevin to be brought out and is about to take Linda's soul but as soon as she holds out her hands, Dean notices the burn from the tattoo being destroyed and realizes that Crowley has possessed Linda! He and Sam get thrown back and we see how this surprising take-over happened; immediately after declining the angel's offer, Linda was grabbed by the Hand who burned off her tattoo allowing Crowley to possess her. Sammy tackles Linda which gives Dean time to grab for Ruby's knife but she manages to run away. As Dean chases after her, Sam and Kevin are trapped by the Hand who starts shooting at them; while he is hiding, Sam finds himself next to the man with Mjölnir and taking Thor's hammer he manages to kill the Hand just in time and after demanding to know where the man found 5/8th of a virgin, Sam kills him too! Back to Dean who is chasing after Linda-possessed-by-Crowley, he finally catches up to her and is about to slit her throat when Kevin's sudden arrival there distracts Dean long enough for Crowley's red essence to escape Linda and re-enter his own form. Just as he picks up the tablet which had been thrown aside in the chaos, Crowley comments to Kevin that every ally of the Winchesters have all ended up dying and suggests that Kevin make a run for it, before walking away.
Now that they are truly alone in the auction hall, it becomes clear that Linda has gone into a shock after being possessed by Crowley and is unresponsive to Kevin who yells at Dean saying that he tried to kill her and doesn't want to hear anything. Sam and Dean leave Kevin with his mother where Dean confesses that he was going to kill Linda because that was Crowley inside of her. After a few moments have gone by, the brothers realize that everything has fallen silent and when they rush back to where they had left Kevin and Linda, the two of them find an empty room with nothing but a letter from Kevin saying that they are leaving and Dean and Sam shouldn't come looking for them, because everyone Dean needs always end up dead. Sam hears the last line and claims it isn't true but in our last flashback of the episode we see that Cas was holding onto Dean's arm and screaming his name just as he loses his grip and falls down, left holding onto a cliff! End Episode!
Next week: Sam tells Dean he had a good life earlier with glimpses of Amelia and his dog (Riot), after their case is finished Sam is done! On the bright side - the episode is directed by Jensen Ackles himself!
