-Ratings Breakdown:
Fox aired game two of The World Series last night, and it inched past CBS by one-tenth of a rating point (or one percent) in the Thursday overnights. Game two San Francisco versus Detroit scored an estimated 8.6 rating/14 share for the primetime portion (from 8:30-11 p.m.), which compared to game six of Texas vs. St. Louis one year earlier (11.6/19 on 10/27/11) was down by 26 percent. The 11 p.m. half-hour averaged a 10.0/17. Keep in mind, of course, that we are comparing game two to the more highly anticipated game six. Comparably, the baseball match-up last night was 91 percent above two-hour X Factor recap show one week earlier on Fox (4.5/ 7 on Oct. 17).
On CBS, The Big Bang Theory was the top-rated series of the evening, of course, with a 10.6 rating/17 share at 8 p.m. And that, year-to-year, was up by 10 percent. Next was relocated Two and a Half Men (#1: 8.7/14 at 8:30 p.m.), which built by 30 percent from year-ago occupant Rules of Engagement (6.7/10 on 10/27/11), followed by sophomore Person of Interest (#1: 8.9/14 at 9 p.m.) and episode four of Elementary (#2: 7.2/12), which dipped by 12 percent from year-ago occupant The Mentalist (8.2/13 on 10/27/11). Retention for Elementary out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of Person of Interest (8.8/13) was an acceptable 82 percent. As for Rules of Engagement, which has 13 new episodes waiting in the wings, Monday at 8:30 p.m. out of How I Met Your Mother (and in place of Partners) is a safe assumption.
Over at ABC, week five of The Last Resort finished a distant third in the 8 p.m. hour with a series-low 4.4/ 7. Five-week overnight track for Last Resort: 6.5/11 – 5.5/ 9 – 4.7/ 8 – 4.8/ 8 – 4.4/ 7. Next was Grey’s Anatomy (#3: 6.7/10 at 9 p.m.), which slipped year-to-year by eight percent (versus a 7.3/11 on 10/27/11), followed by sophomore Scandal at a 4.8/ 8 (#3). Comparably, Scandal was equal to year-ago occupant Private Practice.
NBC may have momentum earlier in the week, but Thursday remains an eyesore care of 30 Rock (#4: 2.5/ 4), Up All Night (#4: 2.5/ 4), The Office (#4: 3.2/ 5), Parks and Recreation (#4: 2.6/ 4) and Rock Center With Brian Williams (#4: 3.1/ 5). The 3.1/ 5 for Rock Center With Brian Williams was actually a season high, but it was still only on par with failed year-ago drama occupant Prime Suspect. As long as NBC is ending 30 Rock and The Office this season, it might as well also get rid of overrated Parks and Recreation.
In week three news, Beauty and the Beast on The CW leveled off with a 1.5/ 2 in the overnights at 9 p.m. Comparably, however, that was still 12 percent below failed year-ago occupant The Secret Circle (1.7/ 3 on 10/27/11) with retention out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of lead-in The Vampire Diaries (2.2/ 3) of 68 percent. Three-week overnight track for Beauty and the Beast: 2.4/ 4 – 1.5/ 2 – 1.5/ 2.
Overall, The Vampire Diaries scored a 2.2/ 4 from 8-9 p.m., which was 12 percent below the 2.5/ 4 on the year-ago evening.
