-Rating Results:
Football-ignited NBC led this first Sunday in October, with the NY Giants at the Philadelphia Eagles at an estimated 15.4 rating/24 share in the overnights in primetime (from 8:30-11 p.m.). The 11 p.m. half-hour scored a 15.9/28. And this, no doubt, will be the most-watched show of the week. Results for any live sporting event, of course, are approximate.

Earlier in the evening on NBC was pre-game Football Night in America at a 1.9/ 3 in the 7 p.m. half-hour (#4), a 3.2/ 5 at 7:30 p.m. (#4) and a first-place 10.6/16 at 8 p.m.

In series-premiere news, ABC drama 666 Park Avenue launched with a third-place 5.3/ 9 in the overnights at 10 p.m. Comparably, that trailed the series debut of short-lived former time period occupant Pan Am (8.5/14 on 9/25/11) by 38 percent. And there was a loss of 14 percent in the second half-hour (5.7/ 9 to 4.9/ 8). But retention for 666 Park Avenue out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of relocated Revenge (#3: 6.5/10) was acceptable at 82 percent.

Revenge for the hour opened its second season at a respectable 6.7/10 from 9-10 p.m., which was just six percent below year-ago occupant Desperate Housewives (7.1/10 on 9/25/11) with retention of 93 percent out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of Once Upon a Time (#2: 7.2/11). One year earlier, Revenge debuted in the Wednesday 10 p.m. hour with a similar 7.0/12 on 9/21/11 (and that translated into 10.02 million viewers and a 3.3/ 9 among adults 18-49, based on the Live Plus Same Day results).

Earlier in the evening on ABC was a clips edition of Once Upon a Time (“The Magic is Coming”: #3: 4.3/ 7 at 7 p.m.), followed by the season two debut of the fantasy drama at a comfortable second-place 7.2/11 from 8-9 p.m. Comparably, this was 13 percent below its year-ago series-opener (8.4/13 on 10/23/11).

Program results for CBS, which finished second overall in the metered markets behind NBC, are estimated due to an approximate 15-minute late start for the evening. Granddaddy 60 Minutes opened season 44 with a second-place 9.2/15 at 7 p.m., which was right on par from its year-ago season-opener. Next was the 20th edition of Emmy winning The Amazing Race (#3: 6.7/11 at 8 p.m.), which was also close to one year earlier, followed by the third season-premiere of older-skewing The Good Wife (#2: 7.4/11 at 9 p.m.) and the fifth season-debut of relocated The Mentalist (#2: 7.0.12). Compared to its year-ago opener in the Thursday 10 p.m. hour (8.6/15 on 9/22/11), The Mentalist slipped by 19 percent.

Fox opened with Football in the 7 p.m. half-hour at a very dominant 15.3/26 in the overnights, followed by post-game The OT at a 15.6/26 (which could include more of the game). The network’s animated block (which is estimated due to football) opened for the season as follows:

Fox/Sunday
8:00 p.m. – The Simpsons: 5.7/ 9 (#4)
Up 7 percent from the year-ago season premiere (5.3/ 8 on 9/25/11)

8:30 p.m. – Bob’s Burgers: 3.7/ 5 (#4)
Down 3 percent from the year-ago season premiere of The Cleveland Show (3.8/ 6 on 9/25/11)

9:00 p.m. – Family Guy: 4.5/ 7 (#4)
Down 4 percent from the year-ago season premiere (4.7/ 7 on 9/25/11)

9:30 p.m. – American Dad: 3.6/ 5 (#4)
Equal to one year earlier.

  1. Aw, that sucks about 666 Park Avenue.

Good for OUAT! The ratings still seem to be pretty good.

  2. I don't understand....in the other news it says 4.3 for OUAT O_o

  3. At least no one lost really. Happy for others and I hope 666 Park Avenue does better

  4. apparentely The Mentalist didn't lose... but the ratings are not good.

  5. I was actually expecting OUaT to have killer ratings.

  6. I thought Once should have had higher ratings, but it still did pretty good..

  7. I'm extremely worried for The Mentalist- I would be devastated if this season were the last :(!

  8. Me too.

I hate that they put it on a Sunday night. Changing times, especially to a weekend night, is risky with a show that's been running for a while.

  9. I still don't understand why CBS moved The Mentalist to Sunday nights.when it's the 5th season and when they are still planning for one or two additional seasons. I'm so worried for The Mentalist though.

  10. 40,919.00 mln viewers of OUAT? wow, that must be absolute record :)

  11. Wow, OUaT managed to get this many viewers against football?! Impressive.
But, honestly, I don't know what these people are thinking. They're killing shows by putting all of them on Sunday night, some are destined to sunk...

  12. Wow! OUaT got a 3.8 and 11mil viewers, and against NFL Sunday too? Even without the football competition, this would be considered impressive ratings. Imo, this is a 'WIN', not just an 'Honorable Mention'. What a great start to the season! I'm very happy my favorite show is doing so well. Congratulations to cast & crew of "Once Upon a Time"! :)

  13. Holy shit. OUAT getting 11 million viewers - and against football - is freaking amazing. Definitely a winner, so no clue why this guy had it in the honorable mentions.

  14. Once Upon a Time was the scripted show winner for night winning total viewers over football which Is big.And number 2 among 18-48 demo.
Revenge did pretty well In Timeslot number 3 In total viewers with 9.50.The good wife narroly beat Revenge In total viewers with 9.80 but among 18-48 demo It was different story with 3-2 for Revenge and 1.8 for good wife.Paring up Once Upon a Time and Revenge was good move by ABC.
666 Park avenue could be on way to dropped by mid season.6.97 In total viewerw were last In timeslot.Only the non Simpsons animated shows did worse In total viewers. It got 2.2 In Demo which Is better than The good wife and mentialist but will that bright spot keep It on the air.
The Simpsons with 3.7 In demo was In 18-48 audence the second most watched show after
Once Upon a Time. It's 7.97 In total viewers was Fox's best showing last night.

  15. Not bad for Revenge considering the change of night.

  16. It seems that OUAT and Revenge premiered at about the same numbers as they did last year. That's pretty good. 6PA is not having a good start. I have a feeling a lot of ABC's new shows will have trouble catching on. Most just don't seem like the lasting type.

The Mentalist already got a 6th season renewal, right? So it doesn't really matter how it performs unless it really tanks. I imagine TGW is done after this year, which was probably done only for syndication purposes. Looks like CBS has a weak point in Sunday night scripted programming.

  17. Wow that is really bad for 666 Park Ave!
I guess all the ABC shows were down from their marks last year, but they held strong unlike 666 Park Ave which seems like many people ignored

  18. The Mentalist only 10.83 viewers? Worst idea was to put it on a Sunday night. It was doing fine Thursday, WTH? If CBS cancels it because of this I will be very angry, because it's the move that created such low viewers.

  19. I'm so scared for The Mentalist, it's one of my favourite shows.
If they end it, I'll completely lose faith in CBS.

  20. that was the earlier top 25 markets ratings in the top 25 markets 4.3% of adults 18-49 watched once but in the whole nation only 3.8, those numbers are only for ppl in a huge rush to know what kind of ratings a show got :)

    ReplyDelete
  21. Glad (but not surprised) to see OUAT and Revenge doing so well.

  22. 1. Overall viewers isn't that important, the demo is what gets shows renewed/cancelled. 2. 10.8 mill for TM is brilliant, it was pulling in 12 quite regularly last season on Thursday, so to only drop by that small amount is brilliant considering the night change...I don't understand your logic.

    ReplyDelete
  23. People overreacting for TM. CBS are not going to cancel it at 2.1, that's decent for it's slot, certainly in comparison to the last episode of a how that was there. Also don't forget 666 will likely drop in coming weeks and this is only TM's first time in the slot. Calm.

  24. The final rating for OUAT is a 3.9 (according to tvbtn) so that's just great news. I don't watch either shows, but I'm glad the OUAT+Revenge pair is working... Revenge getting a 3.2 is much higher than I was expecting.

I am sad for The Good wife. That show is so damn impressive, and while there are plenty watching, the demos are way low. The only thing I can say is that it's around flat from last year and the year before as well...It doesn't really go lower than 1.7 or higher than 2.2... I wish it didn't have The Amazing Race and the football overrun before it. I know a lot of people who lost all patience for waiting for the show to come on last season...

    ReplyDelete
  25. Unfortunately you may be right. However, it's possible they get a 5th season to wrap it all up, because the ratings may be low but that's the only drama on CBS that gets the channel any attention. Obviously that doesn't make it a lock for renewal, but I doubt they have anything better to stick in that slot that would be as stable (It's had that same rating area for 2-3 years now) that also gets a lot of critical acclaim.

On another note that is completely unrelated, when this show is over because of its bad ratings, I will be very sad. I don't think there's another show out there that balances its writing, its nuanced acting, spectacle, self-awareness, unbelievable list of guest stars, or new takes on a done-before genre with such vitality... It's a smart show that deserves to be on cable. :|

    Ok, done. :)
