-Ratings Breakdown:
ABC led this atypical Tuesday in the overnights, with a nine percent advantage over second-place NBC. But The Voice on NBC is poised to lead the evening among all entertainment telecasts in adults 18-49. The live Dancing With the Stars telecast on ABC dominated the 8 p.m. hour with a 9.9 rating/15 share in the overnights (so long, Bristol Palin), followed by The Voice at a rock-solid 7.7/12. Comparably, Dancing With the Stars, now at 8 p.m., bested year-ago time period occupants Last Man Standing (6.8/11 on 10/18/11) and the series-premiere of short-lived Man Up! (5.2/ 8) by an average of 65 percent. And The Voice outdelivered the first hour of year-ago occupant The Biggest Loser (3.6/ 5 on 10/18/11) by 114 percent.

Next in the 8 p.m. hour was an encore telecast of NCIS: Los Angeles on CBS (5.3/ 8), followed by Fox sitcoms Raising Hope (2.8/ 4) and Ben and Kate (2.1/ 3), and sophomore Hart of Dixie on The CW (1.2/ 2). Comparably, Raising Hope and Ben and Kate (which were equal to one week earlier) trailed year-ago occupant The X Factor (6.9/10 from 8-9 p.m. on 10/18/11) by a hefty 64 percent. Four-week overnight track for Ben and Kate: 2.9/ 4 – 2.3/ 4 – 2.1/ 3 – 2.1/ 3.

In series-premiere news, CW dramedy Emily Owens, M.D. (opposite the second President Debate on the Big 4) was left at the starting gate with a mere 1.2/ 2 in overnights at 9 p.m. While that was equal to lead-in Hart of Dixie, it trailed failed year-ago occupant Ringer (1.5/ 2 on 10/18/11) by 20 percent. Facing no entertainment programming elsewhere should have been beneficial.

Overnight results in the second Presidential Debate between President Barack Obama and Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney favored ABC and NBC. The two tied for first with an approximate 8.5/12 from 9-10:30 p.m. (both peaking with an 8.7/12 in the 9:30 p.m. half-hour). CBS averaged a 6.2/ 9, followed by Fox at a 3.3/ 5. And this, in total, put the Big 4 networks at a considerable 26.5/38. Keep in mind, of course, that results for any live event are always approximate.

At 10:30 p.m., the half-hour analysis netted an estimated 7.4/11 in the overnights for NBC, followed by a 6.3/ 9 for ABC and a 4.6/ 7 for CBS.
