Raising Hope is now on its third successful year and we just can't get enough of The Chances! Garret Dillahunt, aka Burt Chance, took some time to talk about his character and the show. Check it out:
SpoilerTV: Burt did a good job being a teenager
father, considering he’s still married to Virginia, has built his own business
and raised Jimmy. As a grandfather, Burt has proved throughout the seasons he
will even go to jail to protect his family. We have seen glimpses of skeletons
in Burt’s closet, though: gambling, a one night stand with a stranger*, the
need to prove his parents he’s made it in life. How does Burt balance all that?
What are his true collors?
Garret Dillahunt: Firstly,
Burt has never had a one night stand with a stranger. Maybe you're mixing me up
with Jimmy? I don't know. There was a kind of indecent proposal with Virginia's
cousin Delilah (Amy Sedaris) that was cut short (to Burt's relief) when Maw
Maw's "ghost" appeared to Delilah. But other than that, he's always
been a one woman man. I like that about him if for no other reason than it's
weird for a sitcom. I like it that they get along so well and complement each
other so perfectly. Sometimes it works out, you know? And I don't think it's a
big mystery what Burt's true colors are. It's pretty much what you see is what
you get with Burt. The only secret he's kept, really, was that he shaves his
feet. Otherwise, he's a bundle of love who looks you straight in the face. And
I'd want him on my side in a bar fight.
SpoilerTV: What has been your favorite episode
so far? And who is the funniest person in the cast? I take that it must be very
hard to keep a straight face sometimes.
Garret Dillahunt: Favorite episode?
Geez...that's a tough one. I like so many of them. I've really been enjoying
this season so far. I think it might be our strongest yet. We've shot so many
episodes now I can't keep them all straight. I liked the spit-fight with the
alpaca in season 1's finale. I liked the vasectomy episode (is that possible?).
This season, so far, I think the Halloween episode is very strong...Burt
explores gay bars and culture. I liked the two-parter where the family busts
Maw Maw out of the retirement home... See where this is going? I'm basically
going to be listing every episode. I love this job and I love playing this
character.
As far as the funniest person--I'm gonna wiggle out
of that one and say Greg Garcia. He puts us in these predicaments, along with
his EXCELLENT team of writers, where we have a real hard time indeed keeping a
straight face. When Martha cracks, in particular, it's really hard for me not
to follow suit. She has a contagious laugh.
SpoilerTV: Would you like to see Burt become
rich? What would rich Burt be like?
Garret Dillahunt: Burt is rich. I wouldn't mind him getting a
'50s muscle car, though. I think Burt would like that.
SpoilerTV: In what ways are you and Burt alike?
Garret Dillahunt: My father says that Burt is the most like me
of any character I've played. Given that I've played so many violent, ruthless
and nefarious people, that might not be saying much, but I am kind of goofy in
real life. Always been a sucker for low humor.
SpoilerTV: What episode are you currently
filming and what can you tell us about it?
Garret Dillahunt: Currently filming episode 11 of our third
season. We're dealing with our bad credit this time. We have a very special
guest star and a very special guest car.... Go nuts.
