Supernatural - Ultimate Episode Winner

Sep 29, 2012

311 days in the making, we finally crowned the Ultimate Supernatural Episode.....Lazarus Rising. An epic game changer of an episode, Lazarus Rising has a long history in these SpoilerTV polls. It decimated all other competition in our favorite premiere poll by getting 51% of the votes. Its nearest competitor, In My Time of Dying, only received 22% of the votes. In the first episode tournament we had, Lazarus Rising ranked 6th overall, beaten only by The End, What is and What Should Never Be, All Hell Breaks Loose 2, In My Time of Dying, and Changing Channels. Its obvious popularity has held up well.

In this tournament, Lazarus Rising beat out Of Grave Importance, In the Beginning, Appointment in Samarra, What is and What Should Never Be, A Very Supernatural Christmas, The French Mistake, and of course Changing Channels to be crowned the ultimate episode. More to the point, compared to most other episodes in the later stage of the contest, it was never even close to being beat. The closest it came was with A Very Supernatural Christmas where it won by 43 votes and What is and What Should Never Be where it won by 35 votes. Four times it won by over 100 votes and it won against Of Grave Importance by a whopping 271 votes. Clearly it was a front runner from the beginning. A big thanks to everyone who voted and commented for helping hellatus go by relatively quickly this time around. I very much appreciate it. We wouldn't have a contest without you.

But what about those other episodes? You know, the ones that you thought left the contest too soon. The ones that you can't believe got defeated by that other episode. Below is a complete ranking of where every Supernatural episode thus far ended up in the tournament. Remember that a lot of this ranking had to do with what the episode was up against instead of the episode's own merits. For instance, I have no doubt that Faith would have ranked much higher if it hadn't come against What is and What Should Never Be relatively quickly. It's definitely higher than 24 in my book.

So how did your favorites do? Do you more or less agree with the top 10? Is their an episode you feel got shafted? Feel free to share all your thoughts in the comments section and definitely start making your top 20 and bottom 20 lists now. That's one of many fun discussions we will have over the winter hiatus here at SpoilerTV. Until then, discuss away at this list and of course.....ONLY 4 MORE DAYS until the season 8 premiere. Woo hoo!!! Only 4 days until we have new episodes to discuss. Hope you will all join us in that!

  1. Sorry
this wrap-up is late folks. Real life
has been kicking hard and this is the first opportunity I've had. When I look at the complete episode list I
find I have more problems with the bottom 20 than the top 20 although I don't
agree with all those choices either.
Certain episodes like Faith, Devil's Trap, Nightshifter, Slash Fiction,
How to Win Friends and Influence Monsters, and of course Jus in Bello should be
    much, much higher.

  2. 1. Lazarus Rising
    2. Changing Channels
    3. Bad Day at Black Rock
    4. The French Mistake
    5. Swan Song
    6. In My Time of Dying
    7. All Hell Breaks Loose, Part 2
    8. A Very Supernatural Christmas
    9. Mystery Spot
    10. Death's Door

I would put The Man Who Would Be King and Point of No Return or On the Head of a Pin instead of Bad Day at Black Rock and A Very Supernatural Christmas.

  3. I mostly agree with the bottom 20 episodes, there are a few that I thought weren't that bad. Like Roadkill. I think Ghostfacers should have been in that position vs. Roadkill, though I wouldn't put Roadkill too much higher. Also The Real Ghostbusters is at the bottom to me too.

I do think some of the top 10 shouldn't have beaten some of the others...major one being TFM of course.

Point Of No Return, The End, Two Minutes To Midnight, Abandon All Hope, and On The Head Of A Pin, I wish were higher on the list.

  4. Top and bottom 20 list!?
I must have missed the first announcement you made, but it's such an awesome idea!Definitely looking forward to it.It'll take some serious thinking, though.

    ReplyDelete
  5. I don't know what makes me happier..Lazarus Rising being first or Bugs being last??
I'll check the whole list in the morning,it'll be very interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  6. ..agreee,.agreee,.,agreee.one of the best opening credits scene of all time that long shot over the site of the grave wooow.. outstanding,,when he came out...scary & creepy..but the best part WHEN THE BROTHERS HUG..priceless

    ReplyDelete
  7. Just Bobby throwing holy water all over Dean's face is EPIC. My personal favourite is The End. This comes very, very close.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I think it will be fun but yes it will take a lot of self debate to finalize my lists. I'm hoping by giving everyone a 2.5 month heads-up we can get more people participating.

    ReplyDelete
  9. This is why the top 20 and bottom 20 discussion should be so much fun. The Man Who Would be King is firmly in my bottom 10 list. At times it is my least favorite of them all.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Slice Girls, Fallen Idols, Shut Up Dr. Phil, Roadkill, and Sin City are nowhere near my bottom 20, especially Sin City which I think is a good episode. I mean they aren't anywhere near my top 20 either but they aren't bottom of the pack.

    ReplyDelete
  11. i think the position of the episode was accurate the first 10 had a combination of one episode for each season

    ReplyDelete
  12. Welcome. I agree that the holy water moment was priceless. I liked the whole scene with Bobby first seeing Dean but that part was the best. I also have The End in my top 5 so I understand your love for it. Besides my number 1 episode, What is and What Should Never Be, the rest of my top 5 are fluid and change numbers a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Brother hug is always a high point and for me, the one in Lazarus Rising was the best so far.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Except for season 1 which has the pilot (#23) as its top entry. I do like that the love was spread out and 3 of the top 10 are from season 3 which is my favorite (pre-writers' strike).

    ReplyDelete
  15. Bugs is currently my least favorite episode although it switches between about 5 episodes on a fairly regular basis.

    ReplyDelete
  16. ..that hug was the best for all the scene sequence or prelude before that moment so funny and dramatic...awesome

    ReplyDelete
  17. I'm not sure I'm going to be ready for a fully thought out top/bottom 20 list, but I am going to schedule my first ever S1-S7 rewatch. I will make notes--lots of notes.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Thank you :)
Well, What is and What Should Never Be is so great and it doesn't matter how many times you watch it: it's always moving and a bit frustrating. Poor Dean: his speech at John's grave. Jensen is such an amazing actor. I'm rewatching Supernatural right now and I passed Lazarus Rising just few days ago. It's always the same, incredible, spectacular game changer. Castiel's entrance deserves an award itself. The Wings ♥
You really shook me and youShook me all night long.
    Yeah you shook me,
    All night long

  19. I sort of have my list. I have 20 episodes I was able to label as favorite but I can't decide on least favorites. I have 21 right now and I can't figure out which one to set free.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Yep, no season 8 episodes will be allowed. That will keep them from getting unfair advantage or vitriol because they just aired. I also found picking the best and worst pretty easy but ordering them much more difficult. It changes a lot. If you want to keep your 21st choice then you are more than welcome to do what I'm going to do - rank every single episode.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Lazarus Rising had me from Dean waking up in the coffin. It was a much better episode than the one where Buffy also woke up in a coffin. Epic is the only word.

    ReplyDelete
  22. So excited for you! Marathons are a lot of fun. Keep us posted on how far along you are getting and your impressions now that you know what is going to happen.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I'm getting ready to start a quick rewatch. No notes, no quotes - just basic impressions. I intend to give every episode a grade from 1 to 5 and then rank them from there.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Seeing that list shows just how many great episodes we have to work with here. :)

    ReplyDelete
  25. Lazarus Rising is an fantastic episode.

    ReplyDelete
  26. That's just more challenging, I'm going to have to split the leftover episodes by best/worst as well, then number them once I figure out my top 20 best/worst. I like the idea though, so I will go with it. But I just know when we post, I'll still be unsure about ranking. It's hard. It's just like, I claim PONR as my ultimate episode, but The End and Lazarus Rising and a few others are amazing as well for me. I'll never know for sure, even when I finish the list.

    ReplyDelete
  27. It amazes me how many episodes I have a favorable opinion of. I can be really hard on shows, even ones I really like. Supernatural is unique in that a full third of them are episodes I can watch over and over again and not get tired of them and I still love half the ones that are left. Even Bugs which tends to be my least favorite is better than most TV pilots I've seen this week.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Completely agree. It has all the elements that make Supernatural the outstanding show it is.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I'm surprised Monster Movie is at 54, that episode is hands down in my top 20. Bugs being last is well deserved, i hated that episode, what a bore it was. When i think of episodes i hate all i think about is Bugs.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Bugs was last? LOL I'd completely forgotten about that ep.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Monster Movie is much higher on my list too. Shifter Dracula is one of my favorites and I loved the homage to classic horror movies. Plus it had "I have a coupon" and the unimpressed pizza delivery guy. I think Monster Movie is underrated.

    ReplyDelete
  32. It has the dubious honor of being the least liked episode for 7 years now.

    ReplyDelete
  33. The top 10 here is pretty solid! The French Mistake, though; it does not belong in my Top 10, let alone my top 25. I like it, but it's such a lesser episode when compared to the other 9 episodes on this Top 10 list!! It's just my opinion, of course, but I'm pretty sure all these episodes in the top 10 (save TFM) are in my Top 25...I'll have to consult my official list to be certain.

I can't wait for the top and bottom 20 discussions!! Yay! I have my top/bottom 20 pretty well sorted, but I'll reevaluate when the time comes closer, and maybe actually try to qualify why I ranked them as I did.

Thanks for all your work running these polls, Dahne! It was so much fun to discuss these episodes over the summer, and I can't wait to see what *lively* discussions we all have over the new season. :D 4 days! YEAH! A new season of SPN for my birthday makes me super happy!

    ReplyDelete
  34. such a great competition, i had a great time participating it it sure as hell helped get me through the horrible hellatus's.
looking at the top ten list, it's funny how the only episode there thats not in my (ever changing) top ten is lazarus rising. as i've said before, i don't know why but i just can't love this episode. even though i know that with everything that happens in it i really should because it is an awesome episode but for me it just doesn't get that love that i feel for all the others up there in the top ten. it could be the season four thing but i dunno. still a great episode either way.
anyhow... four days!!! omg so soon!!! i am so excited because its gonna be awesome. thank god its only four days because if it was any more i may just go absolutley insane

    ReplyDelete
  35. See Supernatural is the only show I watch that I'm really hard on. Besides Once Upon A Time and Warehouse 13, it's the only show I watch that I have "alright or worst" episodes to list. Supernatural I think because I have such a strong opinion about it. Person Of Interest is my second favorite show right now and I don't have any episodes I dislike, but I also don't have any strong opinions about what I like in the show. Though POI's position can change as I am always switching second favorites - can't make up my mind on which show I watch gets second place. Love them all.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Btw, on my computer I can't find this post in the Supernatural section, only the "home" section here on Spoiler TV.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Thanks, I've fixed it.

Looks like Dahne forgot to add the Supernatural label :)

    ReplyDelete
  38. I finished my list, but I don't think I'll ever truly be satisfied. A lot of great episodes are low on my list. Only the last 25 or so are accurate. Similarly, the top 20 should be like, the top 50. lol

    ReplyDelete
  39. I'm very happy with this, it's one of my favorites. It's actually one of those episodes that I can watch any time. I must've seen it at least 10 times, probably more.

And for the record, I think that 'Season 7, Time For A Wedding' was so much worse than Bugs. Bugs didn't make me want to gouge my eyes out with a spork.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Shoot! So sorry. I'm still trying to adjust to the new Blogger interface with the label button off to the side instead of at the end of the post where it was a big glaring reminder to tag the post.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Ha no worries, we're all in the same boat :) I've forgotten my fair share :)

    ReplyDelete
  42. My hardest time is ranking the episodes in the middle. I have a whole lot of 3's and many of them I feel about the same. I keep reminding myself that being a 3 in Supernatural for me is like being a 1 in any other show so it's all good.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I feel your pain. I'm pretty my final ranking list will be current for about 3 minutes before I want to start tweaking it again.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Don't get me wrong. I am very hard on Supernatural It seems I have to be hypercritical to rank episodes or else 10 episodes would be my number 1. I guess what I'm trying to say is that even episodes ranked low in my list tend to be episodes I really enjoy. To use your example, Person of Interest was my favorite new show of last year. There are many episodes I liked but to be honest they kind of run together. My favorite episodes of PoI wouldn't even make my top 100 list of Supernatural episodes. Even episodes in my bottom 20 are more clear in my mind than the tops of PoI and I am far more passionate about them. In Supernatural I rank episodes as some of the best TV has to offer, awesome, great, good, okay, and poor. Person of Interest really only has two categories - memorable or not - and it was the best new TV I saw last year.

By the way, I have now seen 7 pilots for this season and I would chose Bugs on rewatch over any of them. I may not feel that way once I really delve into these shows and get invested but for right now, the worst of SPN is better than anything I've seen new. Surprising because I thoroughly enjoyed Go On and Elementary and I really liked the premise of Revolution.

    ReplyDelete
  45. So glad Lazarus Rising ended up winning. It's one of my favorite episodes of all time, and one of my top two premieres. And it's no surprise that Bugs came in dead last :)

    ReplyDelete
  46. The only one in the top ten that I don't like is Changing Channels and I feel sure it will be in my bottom 20, for me its only redeeming quality is Trickster/Gab, the winner is #2 on my list.

BuddyTV has SPN starting Oct 10th, we are still on for the 3rd...I hope.

    ReplyDelete
  47. The End is 4 on my list, What Is #7, my top 5 have stayed steady in this order, Swan Song, Lazarus Rising, On The Head of a Pin, The End & A Very SPN Christmas.

When I watched this series the 2nd time I used a notebook to record my thought about each ep and scored them with Xs, the more the better. I go with my gut feelings only. Maybe that is why SS is my favorite, it gets the most emotions out of me.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Bugs is above any of the Ghostfacer eps for me. lol

    ReplyDelete
  49. It's interesting that in the top thirty only three are from season seven.
I don't know what that tells us other than season seven is not among the favourite ones.

The fact that the episodes have just been recently transmitted should have made more of them score higher compared to the older seasons' episodes that a lot of viewers might nor have watched as recently.

Then there are Four from season six.
six from season 5 which makes it the most voted-
    Five from season 4
    five from season 3
    Five from season 2 and
    two from season 1
    ( I think I got the math right? )

    ReplyDelete
  50. I'm ok with the Top 10. It's not all my top 10, but there are some great eps. I think for me, while I do love some of the comedic eps, they can never be as meaningful to me as the more serious eps. I think I'd have to make a seperate list to rank the comedies.

    Here's my Top 10:
    1) In My Time Of Dying
    2) What Is And What Should Never Be
    3) Lazarus Rising
    4) The End
    5) Abandon All Hope
    6) Free To Be You And Me
    7) On The Head Of A Pin
    8) Dark Side Of The Moon
    9) Croatoan
    10) The Monster At The End Of This Book

And my bottom 10 (from least annoying to most hated lol)
    1) Long Distance Call - Utterly forgettable. Plus it was ridiculous that Dean actually started believing that the voice on the phone was John.
    2) Like A Virgin - The only scene in this I liked was the funny scene where Dean tries to get the sword out of the stone. Other than that it was a crapfest, and all the virgin jokes made me cringe.
    3) All Dogs Go To Heaven - Boring. And a little skeevy what with the dude pretending to be a dog and living in the lady's house. Ick.
    4) Unforgiven - I wanted to like this because I was curious about just how bad Sam got during the time when he didn't have a soul before he and Dean started hunting together again. But the case was really boring and not scary at all. They need to just stay away from insects, because they don't make very compelling scares.
    5) Bugs - The thing about Bugs is it could have been good. It just wasn't. They didn't make it scary enough, plus the laughably unrealistic stuff like one little can of bug spray lasting until the bugs were gone, and it going from dusk to dawn in ten minutes.
    6) Criss Angel Is A Douchebag - I don't care about magicians or old dudes (besides my relatives) so I was just really bored. The title was way more amusing than the episode.
    7) The Mentalists - I just didn't like the premise. An entire town of psychics? I know it's supposedly based on a real town, but that place is just as stupid for existing. Plus this was the continuation of the Amy storyline. Ugh.
    8) Fallen Idols - Paris Hilton. That's all.
    9) The Curious Case of Dean Winchester - This was a really boring episode. I just didn't like anything about it, and I really had no interest in exploring the theme of what Dean might be like as a geriatric, so eh.
    10) Route 666 - The first time I watched this, I just sat there after and said, "WTF did I just watch?" It's still the worst episode of Supernatural ever for me, even worse than Bugs. Because Bugs could have been good and scary had it been executed well, but there's no way to make "Racist truck seeks revenge" sound anything other than ridiculous and even a little offensive.

    ReplyDelete
  51. As far as pilots go, I've just seen Revolution this year, and have about 2 or so other shows I'll be trying when they air. I'm trying to avoid adding too much shows to my already mostly busy weeknights.

Mmm I am definitely most passionate about Supernatural. I however, don't think I'd put episodes like Time For A Wedding before my other favorite shows.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Yeap, that's how it'll be for me.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Yeah, I hated ranking the middle. Nothing seems to fit anywhere, leading episodes I don't believe deserve spots in the 100s being there.

I tried my best to rank on most entertaining or episodes I enjoyed as a whole. So some brother episodes that I love didn't rank as high because of the surrounding plot. Which I kinda feel bad about, cause I love brother scenes.

    ReplyDelete
  54. It’s no easy task to pick out ten episodes from the many that one enjoys but here goes:-
    X
    1) The Pilot
It’s where I fell head over heels for the Winchesters and their saga. The happy family, then the tragedy.
Those innocent children whom we get to see all grown up, weighed down with mystery and past baggage on their shoulders.
The two actors already seemed like brothers and had such great chemistry from the first moment.
I can watch it over and over and never tire.
    X
    2) Mystery Spot
A perfect episode. For me there is nothing funny about it.
It’s a highly dramatic episode with some lighter moments.
Then it had that wonderful hug with Dean being the only one not to understand it, yet accepting it, but Sam and us knowing exactly what it meant. Great!
    X
    3) A Very Supernatural Christmas
Another fantastic bitter-sweet episode; perfectly balanced between the present and the flash-backs to the young Winchesters, and we get to see Colin Ford for the first time as the perfect little Sammy. Ridge Canipe was great as little Dean too.
    X
Now things start to get really difficult.
    4)
All Hell breaks Lose part 2
A perfect season ending, full of goodies; Dean’s scene with the Crossroads demon was made of great chemistry, the sweet hug with his resurrected brother, the great scene with the bullet and Sam’s pledge to his brother at the end, of being willing to do anything for him.
It also set up the premise for a great season three opener which unfortunately wasn’t up to par.
    X
    5)
    It’s A Terrible Life
The brothers gravitating towards each other even although they no longer had their memories.
Learning to work together and understanding that in the end that’s who they are;. the Winchester brothers-Hunters extraordinaire!
Then it’s an AU, which I love.
    X
    6) Exile on Main Street
I love this episode. From Beautiful Loser and the contrasting flashbacks to Dean’s moving reunion and the intense one-side hug with Sam where you can see right off that there is something not right with him.
I just liked the whole episode, but I have to say that I started to go off Bobby a little bit here because i just couldn’t understand his conduct in not telling Dean about his brother.

What Is and What Should Never Be
Another terrific AU episode that gives us so many insights into the brothers, and a look at a version of how things could have been for them if they had lived a demon-free life.

    The Devil You Know
Another episode that I love. Crowley—“My hellhound is bigger than your hellhound!”
It showed us that Sam had never really had a chance to avoid his destiny, already having demons on his tail from the word go.
Then it's the scene at the end which makes the whole episode for me.
Crowley leaving Brady to the brothers in the alleyway; with Sam out for vengeance and Dean standing tall at his brother’s back Two proud heroes who utter the inspiring words:

[ Dean: All those angels, all those demons, all those sons of bitches, they just don't get it, do they Sammy?
    Sam: No they don't, Dean.
Dean: You see, Brady, we're the ones you should be afraid of. ]
    Mythical!!

    Caged Heat
Great action episode, too bad it had a couple of sub-par scenes in it.

  56. There is no way I am even going to try and rank the middle, I can get maybe 50 in the top and a few at the bottom that I just don't like to watch, but the vast majority in the middle are to close to call. I watch them over and over but some I do FF through parts, the ones at the top never miss any of them.

  57. Yeah, so I based it also on how much I press the fast forward button. Made it a little easier.

  58. Season 8 episode 4 titled "Bitten" is going to feature 3 teens who gain wolf-like abilities, and is going to be used to film with a hand held camera. Sam and Dean isn't going to be much in this episode though. Also Carver mentioned one of the episodes will have cartoon physics in the real world. Sounds like it could be a trickster? And season 8 episode 8 titled "Hunteri Heroici or Dean Amuck" which involves a greenery.

  59. It's funny, but I didn't think "Bugs" was bad -- until the end. Really? All those swarming bugs didn't even bite any of the good guys? LOL. And I agree with whoever said it turned into daytime awful fast. I didn't even think "Route 666" was bad! (Not that I'd put either of those in my top 100 or anything...)

And I loved "Criss Angel is a Douchebag"! And "Hollywood Babylon"! And "The Real Ghostbusters" is one of my all-time faves!

I like the comedies best, myself. But yeah, I thought everything above 100 was pretty much where it should be. Except "Heart" -- blech! I can't stand Madison!

I think I'd rank seasons 6 and 7 as a whole towards the bottom, although there were some good times.
