Supernatural - Ultimate Episode Round 2H - Polls

Sep 3, 2012

We're almost halfway through round two and things are heating up. Nailbiters have abound but not so much yesterday. Both All Hell Breaks Loose 2 and Dark Side of the Moon won their polls in a landslide. So we say goodbye to Sympathy for the Devil and Monster Movie (sniff). If my predictions are right, the polls today will be landslides also. We have a power hitter in this one. We're also looking for the best quotes in Yellow Fever. Personally I hate this episode but it does have some decent quotes so voice your choice because the quotes contest is going to be huge! Happy nominating and voting!

  1. Today's polls fall under the banner of No Contest for me. I love Folsom Prison Blues. I thought it had excellent dialogue, funny scenes, and a creepy ghost. I loved the guest stars. Still it is no The End. The End is in a special category of Supernatural episodes that very few get to - it is perfection. Heck, I even loved Chuck in this episode and I thought that was impossible. From the perfect mix of humor and drama to the obviously bigger budget, The End was entertaining from the first second to the well, the end. I can count on 1 hand the episodes I would vote for over The End.

The Pilot obviously holds a special place in my heart because it was the first episode I watched. I'm not usually overly impressed by pilots. That's why I tend to give shows 3 episodes before I bail. However, this show had me at "No chick flick moments." and I haven't looked back since. When Kripke killed off Jessica and thus the potential love triangle, I knew I was watching something different on my screen and I was excited in a way I hadn't been about a new TV show in awhile. While the pilot didn't get me thoroughly hooked (that would be episode 3), it was scary, entertaining, and far, far better than I had been expecting. It definitely gets my vote and not just because I don't care for My Bloody Valentine.

  2. The way Sam was treated in The End is unforgettable as far as I'm concerned, so Folsom Prison Blues it is.

My Bloody Valentine has people chomping each other to death, naked cupid, cheeseburger-loving Castiel, and Sam using his special ability is the most awesome way. It's one of the very few eps in season 5 I reeally, really enjoyed.

  3. Folsom Prison Blues, and The Pilot.

I liked The End, as it was the only glimpse we got at the coming Apocalypse, but Folsom Prison Blues it is for me; I liked everything about the episode. The guys in prison, the attorney, Henrickson! The one major downfall of The End, for me, is that there's no Sam! I love Dean, and Jensen did amazing work in his dual-Dean role, but I love it most when the brother's are in the episode together. Still, I don't think my vote will matter in the end (harhar), as there's no way FPB will win.

While I liked My Bloody Valentine well enough, c'mon! This is THE PILOT! :) I was in love with Dean and the Impala from moment one, though while it took me longer to warm up to Sam (Jared's acting style in season 1 bugged the crap out of me and I'm glad he changed it up). My Bloody Valentine wins points in the ICK FACTOR contest, but The Pilot was genuinely scary (at least for me). Also, MBV aired out of order, which I didn't know until later, so the flow of season 5 was seriously stumped by that episode.

I tend to love the "origin" story, so Pilot episodes of serialized shows are almost always among my favorites. This one is no different, and so The Pilot wins all my votes today!

  4. Easy today, The End and my Hippie Cas and Jared is spectacular as Lucifer, nothing I did not like about this ep. Jensen playing 2 very different Deans, what could be better.

The Pilot for hooking me on this awesome series, out of 7 years I can truthfully say there have only been a few eps that I really dislike, talking about you Ghostfacers. Even the ones I think I will skip this one, I end up watching and find a few gems to treasure.

  5. another batch of difficult picks.

The End...I wasn't too fond of Jared's performance as Lucifer, but the stoy inched it ahead of Folsum...

Same w/ the Pilot and Bloody Valentine. loved the Pilot but Bloody Valentine had some rare (for me), creepy moments. Anytime Supernatural manages to pull that off I'give them extra points.

  6. The End and The Pilot were my picks for today. The End had a human Cas in hippie mode and even a tolerable Chuck, quotes for days, a return to the Croatoan virus and even though there was very little Sam in this episode, I still found a million ways to LOVE this episode. The pilot still holds up after all these years . One of the most enjoyable, rewatchable pilots of all the shows that I'm obsessed with for sure.

  7. this was so easy the end and the pilot

  8. It was much more difficult to choose between The End and Folsom Prison Blues than I would have imagined. But in the end, no pun intended, I chose The End. I do love FPB, but The End was one of those episodes that were pivotal to the whole Apocalypse storyline, which inched it ahead just slightly.
And well I definitely chose The Pilot over My Blood Valentine, but that's not saying I didn't enjoy the latter because I do. I'm not sure why, but I love that episode, even with the gross couple eating each other to death.

  9. I thought I was the only one who enjoys the way Sam uses his ability in that episode. I don't know why but I love it.
And how can we forget what Dean calls Valentine's Day.... unattached drifter christmas lol.

  10. 1. The End - One of my absolute favorite episodes. Dark, full of action, some good humor, time travel, two Deans, Croatoan, Future Cas ("What? I like past you.") and present Cas ("The voice says I'm almost out of minutes." lol ), Lucifer!Sam, Chuck at his best, and Dean and Sam reuniting. All great stuff.

Folsom Prison Blues was great, I liked the Deacon and Tiny characters, and I loved the ending with the lawyer helping Sam and Dean escape Henricksen- the song Rooster fit those scenes. Dean's famous "Blue Steel" quote. (Little known, I named my betta fish "Blue Steel" before I even realized where I'd heard of it before. lol It was meant to be.)

    2. The second part...urgh. I don't wanna vote. lol I don't have the connection to "Pilot" like a lot do - it wasn't the 1st episode I watched, and I found it to be average in the end, when I finally got to watch it.

On the other hand I loved the cupid hug scene in My Bloody Valentine. I watched the sneak peek in Math class (it was a day when we had a sub and we weren't doing much in class) and I almost burst out laughing, which would have been awkward as nobody I know besides my parents and people online watch the show, and I had earphones on. But besides that scene and the heartbreaking ending, the episode was eh...so so. Some things I liked, some not so much.

But since MBV sticks out more to me, I voted that. I know it's not going to win, so what the heck.

  11. Hah. Love triangle never crossed my mind ever while watching this show, but then, I only began watching after seeing the Season 1 finale and only saw the rest of the 1st season right before Season 3 started.

  12. Yellow Fever does absolutely nothing for me.
    Yellow Fever Quotes:

    12. Dean: "That was scary."11. Sam: " Now Frank O'Brien was the first to die, which means he was probably the first infected. Patient zero." Dean: "Our very own Outbreak monkey."10. Dean: "I'm fine. What you want to go hunt? I'll hunt. I'll kill anything." Sam: "Aawwww." Bobby: "He's adorable." 9. Dean: "So how was Frank's pad?" Sam: "Clean. Searched it top to bottom. No EMF, no hex bags, no sulfur." Dean: "So probably no ghosts, no witches, no demons. 3 down and 97 to go." 8. Neighbor: "Don't be scared of Donnie. He's a sweetheart. It's Marie you've got to look out for. She smells fear."7. Dean: "Those are real…obviously. I mean who would pretend to be an FBI agent, huh? That's just nutty."6. Sam: "Dude, where are you going? That was our hotel?" Dean: "Sam, I'm not going to make a left hand turn into oncoming traffic. I'm not suicidal….Did I just say that? That's kind of weird." 5. Sam: " How are you feeling?" Dean: "Awesome. It's nice having my head on the chopping block again. I almost forgot what that feels like." 4. Dean: "Were they Gamecocks?" Sam: "Corn Jerkers."3. Sam: "Dude, you're going 20." Dean: "And?" Sam: "That's the speed limit." Dean: "Oh what? Safety's a crime now."2. Sam: "We've been completely ignoring the biggest clue we have - you." Dean: "I don't want to be a clue." 1. Dean: "You know what, screw this." Sam: "Whoa, whoa, whoa Dean, come on." Dean: "No, I mean come on Sam, what are we doing?" Sam: "We're hunting a ghost." Dean: "A ghost? Exactly. Who does that?" Sam: "Us." Dean: "Us. Right, and that Sam…that is exactly why our lives suck. I mean come on, we hunt monsters. What the hell? I mean normal people, they see a monster and they run. But not us. No, no, no, we…we search out things that want to kill us. Yeah, huh. Or eat us. You know who does that? Crazy people. We are insane. You know then there's the…the…the bad diner food and…and the skeevy motel rooms and then the truck stop waitress with the bizarre rash. I mean who wants this life Sam? Huh, seriously. I mean do you actually like being stuck in a car with me 8 hours a day every single day. I don't think so. I mean I drive too fast and I listen to the same 5 albums over and over and over again. And…and…and I…I sing along. I'm annoying. I know that. And you, you're gassy. You eat half a burrito and you get toxic. I mean you what, you can forget it." Sam: "Whoa Dean, where are you going?" Dean: "Stay away from me Sam okay because I am done with it. I'm done with the monsters and…and…and…and the hell hounds and the ghost sickness and the damn Apocalypse. I'm out. I'm done. I quit."

  13. I can't not vote for The End as I loved the time-travel action packed feel of it. Even with the skimpy special effects budget that the show has, they managed to give the episode a cinematically apocalyptic feel.
There were parts I hugely enjoyed, like the diaglogue between Dean and his unforgettable thigh-holstered future self.:)

However I have to say that future Dean's action in never having tried to trace his brother after their separation, rankled a little. It was very un-Dean-like.
I'm glad that Sam's great portrayal as Lucifer made his brother re-think his options and not abandon him to Lucifer's clutches, something which unfortunately happened anyway.

I love Folsom City Blues too. The boys' experiences in jail were really great to watch and I just love this quote.
    X

    RANDALL:

    Why are you inside, kid?

    SAM:

'Cause I got an idiot for a brother.

    RANDALL:

    That'll do it.

    SAM:

    Yeah.

    :)

No doubts here, The Pilot is in my top five episodes, if not my number one.

I bought the dvd by chance thinking that SPN was a sort of clone of Charmed, a series which I enjoyed; two brothers instead of three sisters, but I fell head over heels in love at first sight with the Winchester brothers and their saga.

I had never been so caught up in a story from the first moment, as I was with the Pilot and it wasn't just me, for the rest of my family was just as drawn into the story as I was.
    X
I also liked "My Bloody Valentine. There was such a lot going on in it, and if it hadn't been up against The Pilot, it would most certainly have got my vote.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I love Folsom prison blues. I think it is an all round brilliant episode. But the end is... Well it's the end. And it is awesome. So I voted for the end.
Also voted pilot. I like my bloody valentine, if for nothing else then for the sheer gruesomeness that was that couple eating each other to death in the opening scene but, again, the pilot is just too classic with some of the series best one liners and the much missed "bitch jerk".

Also, I enjoyed yellow fever. Can't remember the whole quote but I love deans "we hunt monsters. You know who does that? Crazy people! We are crazy!" rant
And the scream at the cat followed by "that was scary" but I don't think you can nominate a scream

  15. Quotes:-

    Sam: It's ghost sickness.

    Dean: Ghost sickness?

    Sam: Yeah.

    Dean: God, no.

    Sam: Yeah.

Dean: I don't even know what that is.
    X
Dean: "Those are real…obviously. I mean who would pretend to be an FBI agent, huh? That's just nutty."
    X
For me Yellow Fever is a wholly forgettable episode. I didn't find Dean's ever-increasing fear particularly funny and I hated the ghost story, as poor Luther's fate and subsequent second ghost fate, made me feel so bad for him.
The only redeeming part was "Eye of the Tiger" which was awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I agree, I thought Sam's part in this episode was wonderful, from his admittance of his increasing craving for the demon blood to humbly asking his brother to tie him down, to his ponderous attack on the two demons and even his gruesome blood drinking.
Then the confrontation with Famine was awesome. Sam's performance was just so powerful.
I sometimes pine for super demon- powered Sammy especially when I see him in depressed mode or tortured by Lucifer.
How I would have loved for him to turn around and blast Lucifer to shreds, like he did with Famine, instead of having a born-again Castiel simply take it all from him, effectively downgrading all Sam's suffering to nothing.

  17. Folsom Prison Blues and My Bloody Valentine - i enjoy all four episodes, so i chose to vote for the ones loosing.

    ReplyDelete
  18. The End - because it's one of the few season 5 episodes I actually love and have among my all time favourites. The episode is just perfect, from the Croatoan virus through double Dean to Sam as Lucifer. Both Jared and Jensen did an outstanding acting job in this episode and Jared's Lucifer is still the only Lucifer I ever found scary and creepy on this show. Also the only time I ever saw this ANGELIC impersonation of Lucifer on any movie/TV show. Well done.

The Pilot - just a simple ghost story, but creepy enough and with several classic lines. Plus I love it out of pure sentiment for the early SPN and seing the boys so young. And My Bloody Valentine is pretty disturbing, despite some great moments.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I'm with you on the creepy Lucifer that Jared did, I never found Luci to be scary, not any where close to Chris' Alastair. Another reason that On The Head of The Pin is one of my favorite eps. I love the scary/creepy bad guys. lol

  20. I detest love triangles and feel they have become trite, cliched drama builders on TV so I'm always on the lookout for them. My interest wanes quickly at the first hint of a love triangle so I was particularly relieved to see Jessica die.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Henrickson is always a plus and I too liked Mara the attorney. In fact, I wanted her to be their go to lawyer but that would probably get her disbarred.

    ReplyDelete
  22. The End was a phenomenal episode with everyone stretching themselves as actors. Loved it. I also agree that even in what I call the "bad" episodes of Supernatural there is a lot of good in them too. I always have to remind people that I judge SPN episodes against other SPN episodes because even the worst are better than the majority of what's on TV.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I liked the continuity of The End. Even though it took place in the future, it was still grounded in what we already knew.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I maintain that any episode that can make me love Chuck in it is a stellar episode indeed.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I think we are coming to the point in the contest where we are going to constantly be forced to choose between 2 episodes we like. I too love FPB and I would vote for it over many other episodes. It just had the misfortune to go up against one of my top 10.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Those are two of my favorite Cas quotes.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Love that quote. It was a perfect little brother quip.
I actually think The End got a bigger budget than many episodes. It had all the extras and bullet wounds.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Yep, you summed up why I voted for The End nicely. I also agree that the Pilot had some of the best lines in the whole show. As for nominating the scream, I actually put "That was scary" which was the line right after the scream.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I'd say the outtake of Eye of the Tiger was the best thing about Yellow Fever too. It's another Dabb and Loflin creation that was best left in the idea trash can.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I use this strategy a lot myself.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I thought Lucifer in season 7 was scary at times but I agree that Sam as Lucifer was 1,000 times scarier than regular Lucifer in season 5.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Love triangle and SPN just does not compute for me

    ReplyDelete
  33. I loved the Watchmen set they used.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I agree completely. I just wasn't fond of Jared's Lucifer. It affected my enjoyment of the final few scenes of that season as well.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think that the Eye of the Tiger outtake is all people tend to think about with this episode. Which might lead it to being more well-regarded than it actually should be. I liked it the first time I saw it, but each time I watch it I like it a little bit less, because Sam and Bobby are too OOC, for Dean being hours from death.

A great outtake an episode does not make.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Sorry, don't care much for the outtake, and I love Yellow Fever. So do most of my friends. Sure, Bobby and Sam's casual behaviour as Dean is pretty much about to die is ridiculous, and Luther's story is pretty horrible, but I don't know, I have a soft spot for this one. It was really funny to me.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I stand corrected! The outtake is what the majority of people seem to talk about when they discuss this episode, hence my assumption.

I do enjoy Dean's descent into fear, and find 80% of the episode enjoyable, it just bugs me how disinterested Sam is regarding the possibility of Dean's death, again, especially when they don't seem to be able to find a way to stop it. In any case, I still prefer Yellow Fever over a lot of other episodes, just certain things about it bother me.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I never liked Yellow Fever and I agree that when fans talk about Yellow Fever and what they love, almost always they talk about the outtake, the cat scream, and Dean's "crazy people" monologue. People tend to forget what happens for the other 35 minutes. In fact, we had quite the debate over the outtake in the song-to-scene nominations. Being that it was an outtake and not a real part of the episode, I still maintain that it can't possibly be a great song to scene moment because it isn't a scene in the episode. That would be like nominating the gag reel. Yellow Fever is an awful lot like Salvation for me. If the best thing about the episode isn't really part of the episode at all (for Salvation it's the Carry On Wayward Son previously) then the episode had problems to me.

    ReplyDelete
  39. yeah...I mean, Eye of the Tiger was in the episode, but in a pretty tame and forgettable way when compared to other epic song to scene possibilities. I definitely agree that an outtake shouldn't count in that regard (nor should an outtake be the reason an episode is loved; though many people love Yellow Fever for other reasons, and that's totally cool), and neither should the Road So Far or Carry On Wayward Son montages.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I still contend if the "outtake" was shown on TV with the ep then it IS part of that ep. If it had just been on the DVD I could go alone with the not part of ep. We are going to have to agree to disagree on this one. LOL

The only part of this ep I did not like was Sam and Bobby being so OH he has an hour to live...so not in character for either of them. I loved Lilith, the "big" scary dog, the cat scream, all of it.
