Ratings Breakdown:
CBS inched past Fox by one-tenth of a rating point in the overnights on this first Wednesday of the new TV season. But the dominant network among adults 18-49 will likely be a race between ABC and Fox.
Survivor: Philippines on CBS is alive and well, with a dominant 6.9 rating/11 share in the overnights at 8 p.m., which was right on par with the South Pacific edition one year earlier (which trailed competing The X Factor on Fox). Next on the Eye net was the eighth season-premiere of Criminal Minds at a second-place 7.7/12 at 9 p.m. (down 13 percent from the year-ago season-opener on 9/21/11 – 8.9/14), followed by episode one of the 13th season of CSI at an also first-place 6.9/11 at 10 p.m. One year earlier, CSI kicked-off with an 8.1/14, which puts this season starter at a 15 percent disadvantage. Regardless, accolades to CBS for an evening of all “winners.”
The X Factor on Fox, meanwhile, was on the map with a 7.0/11 in the overnights from 8-10 p.m., peaking at 9:30 p.m. with a 7.4/12. But compared to the year-ago evening (8.0/13 on 9/28/11), this was down by 12 percent.
Over at ABC, the one-hour fourth season-premiere of underrated comedy The Middle is also worthy of positive mention with a solid third-place 6.2/10 in the overnights from 8-9 p.m. Comparably, that was just seven percent below its also expanded year-ago season-opener (6.7/11 on 9/21/11). Next on the alphabet net was the fourth season-debut of multiple Emmy Award winner Modern Family at a first-place 10.2/16 at 9 p.m. And that, year-to-year, was up by four percent (versus a 9.8/15 for a one-hour edition on 9/21/11).
In series-premiere news was bizarre comedy The Neighbors at a third-place 6.5/10 at 9:30 p.m. (and retention out of Modern Family of 64 percent). Comparably, The Neighbors built by 25 percent from the season-premiere of year-ago time period occupant Happy Endings (5.2/ 8 on 9/28/11). Next Wednesday, The Neighbors debuts in the 8:30 p.m. time period out of The Middle.
At 10 p.m. on ABC was a Revenge clips special themed The First Chapter at a third-place 4.1/ 7 at 10 p.m. The second season of Revenge opens this Sunday at 9 p.m. (out of the season-premiere of Once Upon a Time and into the series debut of 666 Park Avenue).
On NBC, sitcom Animal Practice opened at 8 p.m. with a lackluster 3.9/ 6, which finished a distant fourth and trailed the time period debut of year-ago occupant Up All Night (4.7/ 8 on 9/21/11) by 17 percent. Next was the time period debut of Guys With Kids at a fourth-place 3.6/ 6 at 8:30 p.m. And that, comparably, was only nine percent above failed year-go occupant Free Agents (3.3/ 5 on 9/21/11). Consider this is a disappointing start for the NBC comedies in the Wednesday 8 p.m. hour.
Next on the Peacock net was the two-hour 14th season-premiere of Law & Order: SVU at a respectable 5.4/ 9 in the overnights from 9-11 p.m., which was right on par with the combination of Harry’s Law (5.5/ 8) and SVU (5.5/ 9) on opening Wednesday one year earlier (on 9/21/11).
The CW capped off the evening with just renewed game show Oh Sit! (#5: 0.7/ 1), which concludes for the season next week, and an encore telecast of Supernatural (#5: 0.6/ 1). Supernatural opens its new season next week.
