How I Met Your Mother - Season 9; To Be or Not To Be [POLL]

19 Sept 2012

Ever since the renewal of seasons 7 and 8 of How I Met Your Mother in March 2011, fans have been anticipating the eighth season, thinking that it will bring the show to an end, and they will be finally able to meet the mother. They had developed a sense of closure for the show, accepting that it will be ending soon. However, when the seventh season received the highest ratings yet, the executive producers started thinking that extending the show to a ninth season won't be such a bad idea. This split the fans into different categories; those who were kinda tired of waiting to meet the mother and want the show to end soon, so they can finally know who the mother is, and those who were ecstatic that the show might be extended for another season. Yet there are some people who don't care how long the series gets extended, as long as they meet the mother in the upcoming season 8.

I personally think that season 9 is almost necessary at this point. After finding out in the season 7 finale that Barney and Robin will get married, the fans are waiting to see them getting back together. However, we know that Barney and Robin will be with other people when the season 8 begins. The journey of how they end up getting married will feel really rushed if it takes place in just one season. If the execs do decide to get Robin and Barney married by the end of season 8, and end the series with Ted meeting the mother at their wedding, there will be many fans who won't be happy without knowing how Ted and The Mother's loved blossomed. So, it probably won't be such a bad idea if the show got renewed for a ninth (and possibly the final) season, but we will have to wait to see what happens.

  2. Really nice summary of the pro/con arguments. I really enjoyed the post, thank you!

  3. We should meet the mother on the season finale, and the ninth season would be all about Ted and the mother's romance, including Barney and Robin's married life.

  4. I love HIMYM, but I think it's time we let it go. And yes, absolutely that would rush Barney and Robin getting back together, which I'm not exactly in favor of, but I love this show. The last few seasons have been at times wonderful, but more and more often the episode leave me disappointed. I hate being disappointed by a show I love so much, with a cast I love so very, very much, and the wishy-washy, maybe-we-will-maybe-we-won't-even-we-don't-know-if-it's-a-good-idea feel of the possible continuation of the series doesn't inspire a lot of confidence. That being said, will I watch? No question. But do I think it's a good idea? Unfortunately, no. Although I'll have to watch this season and see how that goes before saying that I definitely, absolutely don't think they should go any farther; it could surprise me.

  5. I'm definitely okay with a ninth and final season.

  6. Only and ONLY if the mother is a series regular or at the very least a major recurring character. Otherwise put this stall-fest out of it's misery.

  7. No. Wrap it up. I don't give a [choose your own expletive] about the mother reveal because they've dragged every plot surrounding it on too long. I've completely lost interest. If I'm being completely honest, I only continue to watch HIMYM to see Barney act like a jackass and to see Marshall slap him. Eight seasons is two too many and now it would seem that, because of its continued ratings success, CBS wishes to milk it further. It's funny to think that CBS was iffy about renewing this show for the first couple of seasons.

  8. I was missing a 'depends on the quality of season 8' option. :-)

  9. I would like one more season after this season I think there are more stories to tell and I want to see Barney and Robin together for an entire season so hopefully we'll get a season 9. If not, then i'll be fine with it but I feel like we could get more stories out of another season.

  10. I think that the point is that Barney and robin's wedding is kinda rush. I'm one of thoose who think that Barney will paid for his wedding with Quinn but then they're gonna break up, leaving Barney with a planned wedding and no bride. Then we got Robin. The point, for what we seen so far, it's that this wedding happened without being planned.
I really love to finally meet the mother(Barney's half-sister that goes to the university) and a Season 9(maybe a shorter season with 10 or 13 episodes) to see Ted and the mother together, ending with the birth of the first child or something like that.

  11. Geez, this is not the freakin Barney-Robin show. I wouldn't mind a 9th season, but only because of Ted. If a large part of wanting a 9th season it is to "not rush" Barney and Robin getting together and whatnot, than I'm absolutely BEGGING that it end this season. I had more than enough of that in season 5, thanks.

  12. I still put my faith and money on Robin is the mother. Somehow, I still have thesame gut feeling since season 1 opener. The story is twisted already, so humour me!

  13. Yeah, that's not happening. Why do people keep floating this theory around? A) Does no one remember Ted saying in the pilot that Robin is "Aunt Robin"? B) Barney/Robin are endgame. C) Even NPH said the other day that Ted/Robin is done with.

Sitting here hoping this is sarcastic, tbh.

  14. Speaking for myself, Idon't feel that the HIMYM creative staff has planned this out that well at all or that anything of these "clues" really matter. I always feel as if I'm wasting time going back and looking at anything the show has told us about who the mother would be, because I think they're meanigless. The story has been twisted this way and that way, I wouldn't be surprised at all if the mother turns out to be Robin.

  15. This show use to be one of my favorites, and now has just beat me down to the point where I just want it to end. I simply don't trust the people behind the show at all and the idea of another season of mostly "filler" is too much. I just want it to end. Dragged across the finish line, kicking and screaming.

Would it be nice to see Robin and Barney as a couple for an extended period of time? Sure. Do I want an entire 9th season for that reason? No. Where can any other storyline really go from this season, to a 9th, that would produce anything that would keep the audience actively interested? I'd like to see the mother for more then just the last frame of the show, but not for more then a season.

For all the problems this show has had, moving the storyline along too quickly has never been one of them. I'd love to tune into a final 8th season where each episode actually meant something and not just filler after filler.

  16. So where does the drama come from or any full season arcs? Ted has met the mother, Barney and Robin are together, Marshall and Lilly are untouchable and have a child. I just don't see how you could create an entire season out of that.

  17. Except it's been established since the pilot that Robin is not The Mother. Future!Ted says "And that's how I met Aunt Robin".

Honestly, I don't mind people shipping Ted/Robin. People can ship whoever they want. But those who are still in denial need to give up on Robin being the Mother because it is 1000% not happening.

  18. Ted/Robin shippers now have a new theory:
Barney and Robin get a divorce, the mother dies, and then Ted and Robin get married.
This seems really bizarre to me.

  19. Yeah. I am the admin of HIMYM Wiki, and people always keep posting this in comments.
P.S: Just for clarification, I am not a Ted/Robin shipper.

  20. I'm not a shipper for either couple, I just think that anything is possible with the people running this show, and I'd much rather prefer that they throw us a changeup then a real cookie cutter ending for Robin/Barney.

  21. I agree, we never know whats coming in this show.

  22. I'm hoping for a 10th as well... I love the show and I am confident they can pull it off... :)
