MOVIES : The X-Files - Frank Spotnitz talks third movie

Collider: Do you feel like you’ve closed the book now on The X-Files, or is there still another chapter to tell there? Do you still want to do a third movie?

FRANK SPOTNITZ: I absolutely do! I think everybody should write to 20th Century Fox. I’ve been saying for years now that I feel it’s a cultural crime that they have not finished the series. The second movie did not perform the way anybody wanted it to at the box office. I’m proud of that movie, but it makes sense to me that it didn’t. It was released at the height of summer, and it was a story-of-the-week. That’s not what the movie-going audience wanted. The movie-going audience wanted the aliens. That’s what they know The X-Files for. And that story is not done, and it should be finished. I don’t think it’s too late, but I think it’s gonna be, pretty soon. I’m still agitating with everyone I can grab to say, “Let’s make this movie while we still can!”

  2. Yeah, since I doubt they'll ever get the money for a third movie, I wanna say they should have wrapped up the story when they had the chance. Not done something unrelated to the mythology. And I'm sure the executives over at Fox are saying the same thing to them.

  3. Amen, amen, and AMEN. We need a third film. The second film, as an individual episode, was good - but not as a film...for what it's worth, I loved the first movie though and I know not everyone felt the same way.

    That said - I need a conclusion.

  4. Ugh, the second filmed Sucked. if they are going to do a third movie they better make it better than the second one. I would love to see Mulder and Scully being reunited with their son

  5. Agreed - I remember when it was coming out a lot of people were saying that "we are excited to return to the story of the week model" or something along those lines - to which I said - why? Not that I dislike the monster of the week model - but it doesn't work for a movie.

  6. If they don't do what they did in the second movie, it will be successfull

  8. The second film sucked because it had nothing to do with aliens, which is the main mythology and point of the series. Good thing they made Skinner to a cameo, but I also felt that Robert Patrick deserved to have at least a mention. They need to do a closure.

  9. I really liked the second movie, it was much more intimate and about the characters, but I SO want a third movie that wraps up the mythology.

  10. As long as they move back to the mytharc stuff. The second film felt like one of those mediocre standalone eps and I didn't care for it a great deal, sad to say.

  11. The real reason for why it sucked, there wasn't any real suspence and David and Gillian had forgotten how to play Mulder and Scully. They failed to get into their old characters again
