The New Normal - Utah affiliate refuses to air the show

25 Aug 2012

NBC’s Utah affiliate KSL-TV is sticking with its old normal this fall and refusing to air Ryan Murphy’s new gay-dads-and-their-surrogate comedy The New Normal.

“From time to time we may struggle with content that crosses the line in one area or another,” Jeff Simpson, CEO of KSL’s parent company, Bonneville International, told the Salt Lake Tribune. “The dialogue might be excessively rude and crude. The scenes may be too explicit or the characterizations might seem offensive.”

KSL, which is owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, last season declined to air NBC’s The Playboy Club on similar grounds.

Utah residents will likely get a chance to see the show, however, as local station KUCW plans to air it on weekends, according to the Salt Lake Tribune.

  2. It's looking likely that this is going to probably be canceled very early on into the season.

  3. First of all, it's not just Utah that has a problem. There are a lot of people who are anti-gay in the US. Plus the stupid Million Mom's group that wanted this show cancelled just because they thought just by watching this show that it turn their kids gay. Stupid and people are born gay, one doesn't become gay just by watching it.
Second, you're wrong. The show will air at night when the kids are in bed. The reality is does everyone really need to get so hyped up over a fictious tv show?? If you don't like what the content is about then don't watch it, no one is forcing one to watch this program.

  4. That and the stupid Munsters remake.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Yeah but I am pretty sure the Munsters remake is not until next season.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Cowards. Plain and simple.

  7. Utah: Second only to Florida when it comes to embarrassing the U.S.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Two different things, you can't compare Florida messing up the vote in 2001 to Utah not airing this show. Any state could have messed up the vote, the point is that Utah should hae just aired it. People have a choice not to watch it, nobody is forcing them to watch. Then again People make a big deal just to hear themselves be heard.

    ReplyDelete
  9. That's a big conclusion you're jumping to. What makes you think my comment has anything to do with voting?

    ReplyDelete
  10. I just guessed, but it's not a big deal. Forget about it.. My mistake..

    ReplyDelete
  11. Darn it. I had successfully excised the Munsters remake from my brain until just now.

    ReplyDelete
  12. It's already in production and Greenblatt did say that if it's good enough and can make it in time for mid-season it will air by then.

  13. Ellen Barkin had the best reaction, you should read her tweets, revelant. They refuse to diffuse a show where a couple in love want to adopt but diffuse L&O SVU where they can talk about rape of children or anal tear, we live in a sad world. Homophobia and ignorance are the really sins.

  14. Why should a Mormon TV station sponsor a show that goes against Church doctrine, especially when 72% of people in Utah will hate it?

    ReplyDelete
  15. PS : I'm a Utah Mormon

    ReplyDelete
  16. Just don't watch it. Change the channel to something you will watch. Not that hard, honestly.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Then the network losses money because they air an unpopular show...
    Its called capitalism

    ReplyDelete
  18. I'm just stating pure fact
The lds church has the right to monitor what its affiliates broadcast
    what's so bad about that?
I for one support my Church's decision

    ReplyDelete
  19. They shouldn't prevent people from watching it, dispite the characters on there are gay. Who cares are they hurting anyone, no??
People don't have to watch it if they don't want to, simple as that. I think this station went way too far, put it on if people watch then they do. Not like anyone is being forced into watching it.
I disagree, the church should not be monitor the broadcast. That has nothing to do with religion at all.. They are wrong, and should allow themselves to have an open mind. It's a show and it won't corrupt society just because the characters on that show are gay..
Then again this is just my own opinion, nothing against what anyone feels. I don't agree what they did was right, it wasn't.

    ReplyDelete
  20. It will just be a major flop, stupid idea to remake a classic tv show like this.. It will not be a success

    ReplyDelete
  21. I respect your opinion though I may strongly disagree

    ReplyDelete
  22. Plus, why air the show so that kids could see it
Some subject matter may be extremely inappropriate for younger age groups

    ReplyDelete
  23. They don't prevent it. When KSL decides not to broadcast a show, such as this one, it works with another local station to broadcast it. No one that wants to watch it will be deprived of the opportunity. It just won't be on KSL.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Then you should know that KSL would arrange for it be broadcast by another station just has it did with Saturday Night Live, which KSL does not broadcast either.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I know that
I'm just supporting the decision to not air it on the aforementioned station

    ReplyDelete
  26. I just feel that they are going to far in banning a lot of shows. What do they really think will happen?? It's not like anything bad will happen, people can think for themselves. It's just tv

    ReplyDelete
  27. Why would they air it on a religious station to begin with?? That doesn't make any sense..

    ReplyDelete
  28. Then the parents need to be more responsible and not allow their kids to watch it, there is a parental control on the remote. The show isn't inapporiate it's a comedy show. By the time it airs kids are more likely to be asleep.
It's not a kids show, and not for that reason. It has to do with theme of the characters being gay, that's all. Which is really overboard, there are a lot of people who are gay both on tv and in real life, deal with it. They aren't corrupting society nor are bad people.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Some show ideas may not be appropriate for the time slots assigned where kids could easily access them
Shows such as this and the previous playboy club could be seen in primetime tv

    ReplyDelete
  30. It's not capitalism at all. There will always be people who will watch this show, reguardless of the theme.
The show will only survive based on fans and viewers. If there are a lot of fans the network will kept it.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Not a religious station the Church just owns it

    ReplyDelete
  32. I just think they are preventing people from having an open mind about the theme of the show.. So what the characters are day, I'm sure there are Mormons that are gay.. It does not make them a bad person..

    ReplyDelete
  33. Air it on a network, that has nothing to do with religion. People in utah who aren't oppossed to the theme will watch it.

    ReplyDelete
  34. That Million Moms group barely numbers in the thousands. They carry about as much weight as Calista Flockhart. Interesting that nobody protested Modern Family or Glee too much, ever notice that? I guess they only go after the ones that are likely to fail anyway so they can take credit for tanking them.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Again I respect your opinion but I strongly disagree
Homosexuals are not responsible for the moral decay of America
Its everyone responsible for the creation and consumption of such material which destroys the traditional values and decency of American media outlet
s at last one takes a stands

    ReplyDelete
  36. They're a TV station who has agreed to show the programming of another corporation, and they're not responsible for monitoring content. Parents are. That's what the V-chip is for.

    ReplyDelete
  37. They are going after it because the million mom's group thinks just by watching this show that their kids will become gay. Which is untrue, you are born gay or straight you don't become it from watching a tv show. It's the subject of the characters all being gay which is the real issue.
I think personally that group needs to seriously chill out, it's just a ficitious tv show.

    ReplyDelete
  38. That's the parent's fault, there are parental controls for both Cable and satillte tv. It's very easy to block out channels..
This show isn't inappropritate in any way, that has nudity or sex. Parents need to be more responsible for what their kids watch, you can't block a network from airing a show like that. It's obsurb.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I'm sure there are
That's not my point in this case

    ReplyDelete
  40. The church should not block shows out, it's fiction and people are entitled to watch what they want, it's not a sin to watch a show that has gay characters; just saying. that's just me, no offense.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Its about degradation of morals in both children and adult lives

    ReplyDelete
  42. Oh by the way : you got upstaged by a college freshman

    ReplyDelete
  43. I was kinda hoping that instead of refusing to air it, they re-edited it into a remake of Three's Company. Oh well...
