Supernatural - Season 8 - Latest from TV Line - 2nd August 2012

Aug 3, 2012

Thanks to KS Winchester and laura3341 for the heads up on this Interview with showrunner Jeremy Carver.

Carver says that he hopes to grip viewers by starting Season 8 with something familiar “like a flashback that lifelong fans or early fans will hopefully appreciate the magnitude of, but new fans can also grasp onto.”

“Resetting our mythology was one idea that I tried to bring into [the show],” he adds.

As for Dean and Sam, their time apart after the elder Winchester disappeared to purgatory, unbeknownst to his brother, will give way to more grown-up versions of the two. For one, Sam decides to take a stab at living a normal life and finds a little romance.

“Part of this season is realizing they didn’t just spend several years together; they really matured in different ways,” explains Carver. “It’s one thing to get in a car with your brother in year one, but eight years later, you’ve both matured and grown. You’re both changing and trying to find out who you are. There’s a lot of that type of exploration for these guys this year.”

  1. "Resetting our mythology"? Does that mean going down to the angel store and re-stocking our angel population? Summoning Death and asking him to push the big, red reset button? Does that mean Bela is coming back? YAY!

  2. Here's the other Jeremy Carver article that came out this week.

  3. The big question seems to be from what point is he resetting the mythology. If he's resetting from season 2 - yeah! Season 4 - no thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  4. this could be a good thing will mean the might have more then just 1 season left maybe many more.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Actually, perhaps it's just me but the more he tries to explain the season, the less I understand what he is saying.

Does resetting the mythology mean that Dean no longer goes to Stanford to get Sam, and that their bonding never happens so that they spend years apart, or does it mean that Dean never went to Hell for Sam, or that Castiel never got Dean out of Hell and none of the Lucifer thing ever happened, but everything went down a different road.
Does Dean's time in Purgatory spark off some alternate time-line, etc, etc?

If JC has a whole new vision, fair enough, however if resetting also means that the brothers are changed in some way "more mature" and are no longer so bonded and caring and co-dependent but are now "normal" siblings, then it's not for me.

    ReplyDelete
  6. He gave us Mystery Spot and SPN Christmas he should know better than to change the bond.
If he want to make them so called mature, how about not have them keep so many secrets from each other for starters.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Perhaps he feels that the "bonded brothers" theme has worn itself out. After going to Hell for each other there's not really much more they can do. So maybe JC is going down a different road.

“like a flashback that lifelong fans or early fans
will hopefully appreciate the magnitude of, but new fans can also grasp
    onto.”

This could mean that somehing we have always taken for granted that happened to the boys may now be seen in a new light, and spark off another time-line; for example if Sam had never been fed the demon blood that night or if Mary had stayed in bed instead of entering baby Sammy's room, then the whole mythology would change.

  8. I took it to mean we're going all he way back to the beginning. Resetting the mythology but not erasing it or changing it just starting off in a similar situation but with different outcomes as the boys are not season 1 Sam and Dean anymore.
-Dean 'pulling' Sam back into hunting but this time instead of Stanford Sam has a job.
-Sam going in with a cause-saving Kevin and the quest to find that power source. Where last time he was trying to find John and Jess's killer. We should see a Sam that is driven but not by revenge.
-This time Sam and Dean are older and more mature, they'll deal in different ways to last time. We should see a Sam and Dean that are much better equipped emotionally, morally, expertly, pyscially and mentally etc and how they now cope.
This gives me hope that it will be a much more Sam and Dean centric season together and apart. I think they do need to spend the season trying to find out who they are outside of what they've had to be, manipulated to be, needed to be.

  9. Yes, you're confirming what I myself said a few minutes ago and I'm happy that you see these changes in a positive light, as I'm sure that many others will; but if it goes down like that, I'm just going to crawl into a corner and weep hot tears for my mixed-up, angsty, immature, pre-destined by fate, wonderful, caring, once tangled-up brothers

    ReplyDelete
  10. I dont want them to change how we all got started just add on.lol

    ReplyDelete
  11. Are you in the SPN writers room.lol
So are we actually watching them build a relationship again this season?

    ReplyDelete
  12. I agree but I somehow doubt that he is going to do the whole reset thing on all the canon from previous seasons. Maybe he really means not continuing the current mythology and either creating new mythology or doing a different spin on the current mythology (not deleting it per se rather going about it in a different way). I'm on the fence and waiting to see the result ie how S8 starts, continues and ends.

  13. its been 8 years they cant be the same Sam and Dean we saw in season 1, they cant even be the same Sam and Dean we saw last season, every experience they have changes them. As much as fans want them to be forever the same they arent those people anymore.
I've already said I'll give the season at least 3 episodes before I decide if I want to keep watching or not.

    ReplyDelete
  14. How could Sam do anything else while is brother is in Purgatory? I hope that Sam is the one who saves him this time! Moreover, Cas had better not get left behind in Purgatory!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Jeremy Carver has written few very good episodes back. And i think his idea of resetting the mythology is pretty good. According to Jeremy words they'll try to change and try to find who they really are, I hope it won't effect the relationship between the two brothers which is actually the true essence of the show. And the flashbacks that lifelong fans will appreciate a lot. It sounds really really interesting as i have been waiting since Season 5 to see something that got any kind of connection to the early seasons. But wondering a little that does it have anything to do with Sam's inner abilities or powers? And Dean's desire to see his father once again???

    ReplyDelete
  16. Unless the last 7 years have been a dream, don't see how he can change what has already happened...and I for one don't want that changed. I still want the show to be about FAMILY!!!!! and caring.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I want they to be mature, but still want the family and caring about each other left in the show. Don't expect them to be the kids they were and can not see them really doing anything so bad to the show that I would stop watching. I feel like Sam & Dean are members of my family and I want to watch them grow.

    ReplyDelete
  18. This was interesting! And I love the interview that boys had at Comic Con where they said they're trying to get to ten seasons and 200 episodes.

    ReplyDelete
  19. That's the problem, though. They're already not who they were in season 1. Only two examples: Sam left his desire for a normal life a long time ago. Dean showed many signs that he regrets dragging Sam back into hunting. They're erasing their character development plus the brotherly bond.

I'm not saying they or something things can't change. They did many times already. But their co-dependent relationship was kept and was always the strongest part of the show. They're letting it go now, which I see as a huge mistake.

Let's see what happens. I'm not excited to see it, though,

    ReplyDelete
  20. I'm so excited for the new season and can't wait to see the direction the show takes

    ReplyDelete
  21. All this, plus they are having Sam be completely disinterested in finding Kevin, stopping the remaining Leviathans and the biggest crime of all saving Dean. What we have been told is that Sam is jerk who looked around, didn't see anyone and just moseyed off without a thought to get the normal life that he had already given up on. I'm not seeing much to love from a Sam POV and Sam is half of Sam and Dean.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I guess you're not going to post a link to that HuffPo interview with Misha? Because I thought that was interesting and pretty spoilery.

  23. Yes, yes! In my opinion Sam just walking away is out of character. Like I said before in another comment, it's possible that Sam did look for Dean and, not being able to find him, 'moved on'. I would totally accept that and my heart would break for him. But, sadly, it's not what they're saying. And my heart breaks for their canon relationship.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I seriously doubt he's going to retcon anything. It sounds more like going back to either the season1/2 mythology or going back to the season 4/5 mythology. In other words drop the Leviathans. Whatever he's doing mythology-wise this year will either tie into season 1 or 2 is my best guess. He's obviously not going to wipe out years of SPN history.

    ReplyDelete
  25. CW head honcho Mark Pedowitz said that he hopes Supernatural will be on air as long as he is in charge. while things could of course change, as long as Jensen and Jared reup their contracts, we should definitely have a season 9.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Thanks so much for posting this, it is one of the best Misha interviews I have read and I am even more excited by s8.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I am hoping that more mature brothers does indeed mean brothers who can communicate more openly and effectively with each other. I'm not sure why fans are freaking out from the spoilers about the brothers' relationship. Give it the first 5 episodes and then freak out if necessary. This whole thing feels like another RoboSam freak out before anything even happens on screen.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I think people are mistaken to think more maturity and brotherhood bond are mutually exclusive. It doesn't have to be either or. They can be more mature AND still have a great brother bond.

    ReplyDelete
  29. And early freaking out surprises you?? This is what SPN fans do. lol I have not seen anything to freak about....yet.

    ReplyDelete
  30. We haven't heard even 1% of what they know about #Supernatural so far. Getting over upset about the few grains they have let slip out never seems to be worth it because we find out when the episodes actually air that what we thought was going to happen never, ever does.

    ReplyDelete
  31. No it doesn't. Freaking out early, screaming about being done with the show, doomsday predictions about ruining SPN, and fandom wars over nothing all because of what amounts to 30 seconds of information are part and passel of the Supernatural hellatus. I'm just tired of it. Spoilers never end up like people think but no one ever learns from that experience. SPN fans are exactly like the Winchesters in that regard. I have not once seen a spoiler hubbub turn out as dire as people make them sound. I swear my experience with the Supernatural online fandom breaks down into this: 1/3 high school girl drama making something big out of nothing, 1/3 toddler pageant mom doing everything to make sure their darling (what or whomever that is) is the only thing heard, and 1/3 Olympic gold relay medalist doing impossible feats in the name of something greater. I just wish we would spin more towards the later. However, in good news, I think it has taken longer for me to be sick of it than it has in previous years. In bad news, the hellatus is much, much longer.

    ReplyDelete
  32. That's funny because I thought it was one of the worst interviews I have ever read. Someone asking Misha if he hates Sera Gamble? Really? What kind of question is that? The entire interview is Maureen Ryan saying what she hates about Supernatural and then asking Misha to validate her. It's one of the worst cases of bad journalism I have ever seen. The interviewer should never be as prominent in the article as this and it's one leading question after another. She should have just written another article condemning Supernatural. Then interview Misha Collins.

  33. There is still 2 months to go and I don't think it has ever seemed this long to me and when it starts, I blink and it is season finale. Well it seems that way to me. I am almost thru with s4 for the 3rd time this summer. lol

    ReplyDelete
  34. Even I don't want that changed, but still even they can reset the timelines just like Fringe does every season or the way they did that in "My Heart Will Go On".

I don't want first five seasons to be disturbed though.

    ReplyDelete
  35. You are doing better than me. I am stuck on After School Special. I just cannot bear to watch this episode again until I absolutely have to. I'm going to do a season 7 rewatch first.

    ReplyDelete
  36. If they really take away this "bonded brother" concept off the show, then I am done with it. That is the only thing I love about this show and there are a lot of shows that portray monsters and mythology better than this one. Brotherly love is the only aspect that makes Supernatural unique.

    ReplyDelete
  37. ha, I watched, 4,5,6, then went back and did 1-7, now I am back on 4 and will do 5-7 again. I need to get a life, but I will see a good youtube video or one of wolfpups videos and get me pulling out my dvds again.

    ReplyDelete
  38. If you go back and look at the interview, it was another reporter that just butted in that asked Misha if he hated Sera.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I realize that. Maureen Ryan decided to print it even though it was not even part of her interview. That says miles to me about how nonobjective this interview is.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I agree with both your posts Shaula Dfn, and yours percysowner, their relationship is pretty much the foundation of the show(monsters aside) from the very begining. We can't have one brother just abandon the other. Sam not careing, about his brother's whereabouts is completely out of character, plus its not something alot of fans will be fond of. I love that brotherly relationship, it's been kept strong from season one, and five seasons in it was still focused on alot, I don't think any fan wants to see that [relationship] broken or weakened in this season.

    ReplyDelete
  41. No way, if the brotherly bond is being removed from the show then the show is being removed from the series I watch. I love the family part of this show, in fact, it is my favorite part of the show and in my opinion also the best part. No matter what they are going through the boys are always there for each other, thats what the fans fell in love with, how can anyone think we'd like it when it was taken away. Sam-Dean's brotherly relationship is Waaay more important to me than Sam finding love...

    ReplyDelete
  42. I'm not convinced that this "reset" will be an actual reset. I'm thinking it'll more likely be some kind of retcon.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I do not think he means 'reset" as in - oops do-over, it was just a dream. I think he's going to take one of those disappearing threads in season 1 or 2 and expand it to morph into its own mythology. Similar to how the amulet is one thing in season 1, changes to something else in season 3, and becomes mythology in season 5.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I don't think he's going to do something like that. I figure he's going to take a piece of existing mythology and retroactively add something to it and change the meaning behind a major plot point from the past.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Since we are talking about the brothers being there for each other, check out this beautiful video.

  46. Maureen Ryan is a TV critic, not a news reporter trying to provide unbiased coverage. She's supposed to have opinions. Interviews are a chance for her to get responses to what she thinks are important issues and questions that she has been writing about. By including her full questions, she gave the reader enough context to properly understand Misha's answers.

I also thought her choice to include the Sera question was odd, but maybe she felt it was important to mention in the interest of disclosure on what was said, or maybe she thought that the fact that the question was asked like that was interesting enough to mention.

  47. Sam abandons Dean in purgatory to live in Beavercleaverville so called normal life. Hasn't he learned yet that Winchester's aren't meant for normal lives? Even though Dean promised Sam he wouldn't work to bring Sam back from hell he never stop trying to get Sam back so it's telling when Sam has the chance instead of him continue to look for a way to help Dean get home he walks away and gives himself a normal life obviously not caring about Dean and what may be happening to him.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I wasn't going to reply, but I changed my mind. Sam DOESN'T abandon Dean. He DOESN'T know where Dean is. For all intent and purposes Sam believes his brother and Cas to be dead. Even if Sam knew that Dean was in purgatory, what could Sam possibly do? The two ways we know about opening the door requires virgin blood. You want Sam to kill a virgin for her blood? Then, if he got the door open what's to keep the other baddies from coming out while he got Dean? We don't yet what Sam does or when he decides to walk away, We won't know until the premiere.

I'm psyched for season 8 and I trust Jeremy Carver to tell an excellent story. I feel he will do both Sam and Dean justice.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Not only needs virgin blood, but blood from a purgatory native. I'm with you on Jeremy doing a good job, he already knows the characters and has written some excellent ep.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I love the plan for Season 8, flashbacks seem a cool way to show the time Sam and Dean were apart. I like that they are cutting back on the mythology. All the angel stuff was getting to feel like a weight around the neck. And the very best is feeling we are getting back the brother bond that I have so missed. I don't mind if each character is explored in different ways, but I hated that in S7 they were like strangers.

Finally, can't wait to see what quest excites and binds them. I would love it if the amulet resurfaced. God I've missed that bit of charm around Dean's neck!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Shaula why do you have such a negative view of Sam and Dean? I understand that Sera Gamble messed up all the characters, but Jeremy Carver is not Sera Gamble. In fact if you have read the interviews you know that he had no input in the finali at all. Why place blame on the innocent? Why not wait to see what he does before judging?

    ReplyDelete
  52. Doesn't matter. Dean didn't know Sam was in Cold Oak did he say oh what the hell let's get a burger? He called Bobby. He called Ellen when Sam got Megged. Before you say Sam can't Dean got out and searched on foot and other things as well. He wouldn't give up even when Sam said too. Season 6 ep 1 Dean said he kept looking for a way to free Sam. Sam responds he told him not to and Dean says "So sue me." Sam was in Satan's cage and opening it could release hell literally so Dean checked for options he didn't sit and whine pretending his brother was dead so he could console his conscience that he didn't do the right thing by Dean, Cas or a terrified rookie 18 year old kid on the run from Satan's replacement Kevin. Before 8.1 aired and after what he did was wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Cas found what he needed so what's your point?

    ReplyDelete
  54. He abandoned him. Sam didn't even look but assumed Dean was dead. His excuse? Everyone was dead and I had no help. He didn't have any help searching for Jess killer yet he easily researched and investigated her death without any excuses. Apparently he has no prob researching and investigating if the person matters to Sam.
