I definitely approve of this very much.
ReplyDeleteGreat news!!! :)
ReplyDeleteI will decide if I am happy about this or not after watching first half of season 8.
ReplyDeleteGood news :). Although you couldn't really do a seasons nine or ten without them, glad to hear they've signed on
ReplyDeleteWahoo!
ReplyDeleteThat would be so great if the show lasts that long :)
ReplyDeleteI'd like to get through season 8 before I have to anticipate 2 more seasons. O_o
ReplyDeleteCow = Milked
ReplyDelete,//,WOOOW.//...AWESOME.//..AMAZING..//FANTASTIC.//.INCREDIBLE..///..COMMON..C.W DONT MESS ANYTHING.//.leave the directors ,producers and writers work in .//.PEACE,.//..DONT BOTHERS THE BOYS.//. PAY THEM WELL..//. MAKE THEM HAPPY.
ReplyDeleteOK bye.
ReplyDeleteWhat do you even mean by that?
ReplyDeleteAwesome news maybe it might go past 10 seasons. Still no chance on breaking Micheal and Lucifer out of hell?
ReplyDeleteGreat news. That means season 9 is pretty much a lock. Season 10 is favorable depending on this year's ratings.
ReplyDeleteMan I hope not. That story is well overdone by now.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking the same... Although I expect it to be good.. I was not very fond of the general direction the show took after season 5... I expect the show to go back to it's roots season 8 onwards...
ReplyDeleteget another cow?
ReplyDeleteSupernatural is the cow ;)
ReplyDeleteI assume they assume it'll be bad. I'm with you on I'm waiting to see.
ReplyDeleteIt should have ended with season 5,the way it was supposed to end. Dragging it out for 10 seasons is ridiculous
ReplyDeleteThey need to add new characters then, maybe a full time love interest or give them a sister? From Mom's side? either way I don't know if I can handle three more years of Just Sam and Dean, we need new blood now that Bobby is out and Cas is a part-timer.
ReplyDeleteI have the strong belief that no show, no matter how good it is, should go beyond ten seasons. To be honest, I haven't watched this show since Season 2, but I might marathon it some day. Either way, 10 seasons is the maximum a TV show should get.
ReplyDeleteYou're already judging season 10? ;P
ReplyDeleteWhy aren't you waiting to see where S8 bring us??? With the new showrunner everything can happen. He promised us to bring back the show to its roots, is it going to happen for real? I have absolutely no more clue than you or anyone else. Can it be a 'lie'? Yes. Can it be bad? Sure.
But can it be good and truth? Why not???
We won't know 'til season 8 begins and ,til we see the first 1/4, first 1/2 of the season.
as in cash cow?
ReplyDeleteI'm assuming some people don't know that just because the show is on for 10 years doesn't mean they have to watch it for all of those 10 years?
ReplyDeleteTo which I say Doctor Who. And Gunsmoke was really going strong all the way to the end. Cheers went 11 years and was still strong. Law and Order went almost 20. Edge of Night was a soap opera and although it lost ratings the writing was really strong up to the end. It's not number of years, it's the writing.
ReplyDeletenope...as being dragged out for way to long. ;)
ReplyDeleteGood to know. I wasn't happy with with season seven and I'm really concerned about the spoilers I've heard. But I'm delighted that show can go on up to 10 years without having to renegotiate contracts. If the show gets on track, should go on. Heck if it doesn't go the way I want it to and people continue to watch and enjoy it, it should go on. I haven't heard of any show that I consider to be superior being canceled or passed over because Supernatural is on.
ReplyDeleteThe Simpsons could in NO WAY end after season 10. It starts its 24th season now in September and while a lot of people say that is too much, I could never have imagined the show ending after the 10th season. Surviving 15 (and counting) seasons BEYOND season 10... that proves something.
ReplyDeleteAnd@0ab73615d3a0c6f41f67f3ed4b233fd3:disqus L&O went for a complete 20th season (not "almost."), L&O: SVU is starting its 14th seasons soon, and L&O: CI marked its 10th season before ending. ;)
Are you from India too? Your name sounds Indian.
ReplyDeleteJust my speculation:
ReplyDelete1. Supernatural would be 3rd highest rated show on the network for the year 2012-2013, once again with a mediocre season, but better than 6th and 7th.
2. So, obviously it gets renewed for a season 9 for 22-24 episodes.
3. I guess, ratings would drop drastically in season 9.
4. If CW is alive, Supernatural would get a shortened season with 10 - 13 episodes just like Gossip Girl and Fringe season 5 got this year.
I guess total episodes would be 200+.
Well your not being force to watch.
ReplyDelete*you're
ReplyDelete..and I won't be ;)
I wonder where the story could be by season 10.. if they keep playing it all out then eventually I wouldn't be surprised if Jesus resurrects in season 9...
ReplyDeleteHey Sammy, Jesus man!
The Simpsons is a cartoon...
ReplyDeleteLaw and Order is a procedural show....same as NCIS/CSI etc...
___________________________
Supernatural started out with a desired end (5th season) and they've dragged it on for two pointless and very forgettable seasons, and now they plan on 4 more.
Ridiculous
"
ReplyDeleteIf CW is alive, .."
lol good point, CW could be off air this time next year if ratings fall any lower
My speculation based on what you said:
ReplyDelete1. Supernatural is 4th highest rated show on CW for 2012-2013 with a great season but about the same demo ratings as last year.
2. Supernatural is renewed for season 9 for 23 episodes. (2013 - 2014)
3. Ratings drop by .1 to .2 in demo. Not a drastic drop by any means when compared to usual CW fare. However I expect that by this time, the CW's overall ratings will be better dropping Supernatural into 5th - 6th place for the CW.
4. Supernatural gets renewed for 23 episodes for season 10 (2014-2015).
5. 2015/2016 - Affiliates are tired of still subpar ratings and a large percentage drop the CW. It no longer makes sense for the CW to be around and it goes bankrupt, officially canceling all of their shows.
Supernatural totals 218 episodes.
I think people forget that Supernatural is not really in a demo ratings race. It's in a race to be better than 3 other CW shows. As long as Supernatural keeps winning polls for CW publicity, gets strong hits on Hulu and Netflix, and making money for the WB that offsets its production costs, it has a great chance to survive even if you personally don't like it anymore. The CW renewed Nikita with a 0.4 in demo this season and they will renew it next year with a 0.3 in demo. For the CW, Supernatural has a long, long way to fall.
The CW is contracted through 2015 with their affiliates. If the CW does go bankrupt (and right now that is very possible), it will not be until 2016.
ReplyDeleteI agree, this will be officially good news if Season 8 turns out to be good. While I'm hopeful for the show, given how Season 6 and 7 went, I'm skeptical.
ReplyDeleteYes but if they do go bankrupt I highly doubt they will still air new shows and commission new seasons of existing shows..
ReplyDeleteIt would be repeats every night
That is only your opinion and it is very debatable whether the 5-year plan was a true plan or merely what Kripke told the network in order to get renewed when things looked very iffy. Regardless, the supposed "5-year plan" got thrown out during the writer's strike. Kripke never planned on having angels on the show so obviously the so-called 5-year plan wasn't what happened on screen anyway.
ReplyDeleteOh, I'm sorry, I didn't realize that weekly-aired cartoons and procedurals aren't TV series......... The guy who originally posted specifically said "any show," and that's why I commented with examples of a few shows that have surpassed their 10th seasons and have all been at the top charts at least once. ;) However, if Supernatural does suck as much as you specifically say that it does, then for all that I care, go kill it off, but I have never seen Supernatural at the top charts the same way I have with L&O and The Simpsons, that's all I'm trying to say :)
ReplyDeleteI didn't say It sucks..
ReplyDeleteI used to like it but they're flogging a dead horse.
The last 2 seasons were extremely forgettable.
..and sorry but I don't understand what you mean here:
"but I have never seen Supernatural at the top charts the same way I have with L&O and The Simpsons"
BEST COMMENT EVER!!! I don't understand why people watch something that continually disappoint them or makes them angry. Let it go and let others enjoy it. Why go on a thread of a show you either haven't watched in years or regret having watched for years and dump all over it? Let people who actually like the show celebrate in peace.
ReplyDeleteAMAZING NEWS!<3 For those of you that have negative comments and/or dont approve, no one said you have to continue watching the show but alteast try to be courteous of those that are happy with the news. Keep your negative thoughts to yourself, if you cant think of anything good to say then dont comment.
ReplyDeleteI feel the same way. Even if I don't like a show doesn't mean that I want it to get canceled; other people still love it. I have been on the downside of loving shows that have been canceled too often to want to see a show with as passionate fans as Supernatural canceled. That won't change whether Supernatural stays my favorite show or not. After all, I didn't watch Chuck but I was really glad every time it was renewed.
ReplyDeleteIts like supporting a sports team which was once a world champion and expecting the best from them even at the present. Just because they aren't performing well at this point of time doesn't mean, we have to let them go and stop criticizing about them. Criticism is with a hope that show would improve not to push the show down even further
ReplyDeleteYeah, I may have used that expression a little incorrectly. I say "top charts" about something that ranks between #1 and nr #10 on the lists. Like with music, one track is the top chart in hip-hop, another is the top chart in classical music. At some point in my 19 years on this Earth, I swear that I have seen Law & Order and The Simpsons ranking #1 on their respective categories. But I have never seen Supernatural as #1 on any of the top-ranking lists that I have seen. That's what I meant, sorry for any confusion.
ReplyDeleteThe WB definitely find it profitable what with TNT syndication, international syndication, DVD sales, conventions, merchandising, etc.
ReplyDeleteCBS and the WB will keep the CW on air with new episodes and new series until the affiliates contract is over. They have been subsidizing the CW since its inception and there is no indication that they will stop doing so any time soon. Both companies are doing very well and the new Netflix deal has made the CW the closest to being profitable it ever has been. To cut off new seasons would lose them billions from Netflix. The CW will be on air until 2016.
ReplyDeleteI disagree. I think there are quite a few people whose constant criticism is mostly to make everyone else miserable about the show too in a "misery loves company" or an "I can convince you to feel the same way" type attitude. If you've hated/been vocally angry about a show for 2+ years, it's time to let go. Same with a sports team. If you are angry or disappointed more than you get joy out of it, drop them and move to something else. You can always go back if it starts becoming what you want again. No need to make yourself and everybody else miserable by constantly harping about how dreadful something is. In all honesty, season 4 and 5 are BY FAR my least favorite, but I still liked more about Supernatural in those seasons than I disliked. If that weren't the case, I would no longer be watching it.
ReplyDelete*screams* *happy dance*
ReplyDeleteLiterally!!! =D
BY FAR my least favorite, but I still liked more about Supernatural in those seasons than I disliked.
ReplyDeleteAlmost same here. In season 6 there is a stuff I liked about the show than I disliked. As far as season 7 is concerned, I can't really give a proper answer, if I liked more or disliked more. Because while I was watching the season the episodes appeared better then than what they appear now. After watching the entire season my impression is a little worse now and that is what makes me criticize this season. So, I guess same thing will happen with season 8 too, but I think I will like it better than 6 and 7. So I would definitely be continuing the series till it lasts.
I like the metaphor. I'm still railing against the Irsays but that doesn't mean that I won't watch in the hopes that my Colts can overcome. You gotta be loyal. I ain't no fair weather fan. But sports is new every year, new draft picks, turnover, player improvement. But in TV if there hasn't been a change at the top and your "hope" goes on for more than a few years, it's time to cut your losses.
ReplyDeleteAt Comic Con, at the NERD HD interview (not sure if it was for this year or last year, having a memory blank here)' Jared said pretty much what you just said, that Eric throw the ''5 years plan'' for the network
ReplyDeleteThe way you said that continuing the serie is ridiculous is pretty much saying that it suck. Sure you have the right to be disapointed in the last two seasons, I was to on many points, but why are you assuming that S8 (and 9...and maybe 10 if the show has good enough ratings to be renew) are going to be sooooo bad that the show need to be cancel???
ReplyDeleteLike I said it can be on the same level next year, or it can be better or a lot better. We have no freaking clue. If you have a crystal ball and you know everything already, what do you want us to do with all your complain about seasons that haven't aired? Already calling ''ridiculous'' seasons that hasn't aired is almost complaining for the sake of complaining. I'm having doubt too, I'm nervous about some comments, but I don't run away saying the show need to be cancel, I'm waiting to see
The ''back to the roots'' will make a lot of people happy if this really happen. If you really used to like the show and if expection turn out how they say it, you should be happy too.If it doesn't turn out to be true, we'll all be disapointed with you, you can be sure of that. Why can't you either give the benefit of the doubt or, if you just can't, let other people enjoy it without insulting their show?
There are several shows that I used to love and have stopped watching..Bones, Warehouse 13, Rizzoli and Isles, but even thought there have been a few ep of SPN that I did not love, it is always good enough that I never thought about leaving. Even the ones at the bottom of my list still had some scenes in them that moved the story ahead. I think this is the best news I have heard since the season 8 renewal. My favorite brothers are staying in my family.
ReplyDeleteI don't mind someone criticizing an ep, but dang wait until it has aired.
ReplyDeleteOf course you knew I was going to jump on this..4 & 5 are my favorite seasons. lol Just finished watching the hairy palm one and laughing my self silly. I would love for them to bring Jesse back, find out what has been going on with him.
ReplyDeleteI'm 100% with you. I don't understand people who just can't wait to complain....on every site I'm in, I saw so many people complain before one episode (just basing themself on 2 sentences or on the promo), admit after the episode they were wrong, before starting again to complain about the next episode before it aitred
ReplyDeleteMaybe you should check The People's Choice Awards where SPN got Best Drama AND Best Syfy
ReplyDeleteOther possibility, the affiliates pull out. The CW takes the shows that are making a profit with international sales, DVDs etc., Supernatural does well in all of these, and shops them to Netflix or Hulu like Arrested Development. Supernatural gets another 1-2 seasons. Or the CW throws together an Internet network and Supernatural is one of the shows to make the cross over. Pedowitz is talking about TV now being the wave of the future. They may be planning to try a completely new platform.
ReplyDeleteThere are several shows I have dropped in the past too, including two shows I was super passionate about - The X-Files and Buffy. Those shows were my Supernatural when they were on but eventually I was drained by what I hated in them outreaching what I loved. So I dropped them. I went back to Buffy after a few years but not the last season of XF. I actually tend to drop shows in season 3-5 because I'm usually bored by that point. I see no reason to waste my time watching something that makes me unhappy. I understand hanging in a season in case it gets better, but after that the only person to blame for your misery is you. No one forces anyone to watch a show so if I watch a show for years after I've stopped liking it then I have no right to complain. It's my own fault for still watching.
ReplyDeleteHa! Such is the illogical world of Supernatural fandom. I don't think SPN fans learn from the past anymore than the Winchesters do. Perhaps in this more mature season, the brothers will learn to communicate instead of hide and lie while the fans will learn not to jump to conclusions.
ReplyDeleteAs far out as that seems, I agree with you. I could see the CW becoming a totally online network. That makes the decision to renew Nikita a whole lot more logical and explains why Pedowitz has hired a non-Nielsen company to research each show's online demos. It also explains why Ringer and Secret Circle were canceled since they did not have as much online presence.
ReplyDeletewell jimmy caver is a god ! next to eric so....i am praying xxx
ReplyDeleteWhy are you on a topic about Supernatural if you no longer like it?
ReplyDeleteMaybe some TV movies were thrown in with some extra money. Don't really know for sure.
ReplyDeleteI'm just surprised people don't think that the show can excel again.
You must have read my mind. I was going to use the Chicago Bears as a parallel but re-living the early nineties would be too painful.
ReplyDeleteSorry. Your Colts are done for.
ReplyDelete(Couldn't resist.)
M*A*S*H
ReplyDeleteER
ReplyDeleteER and MASH both were over 10 years. What do you base your beliefs on?
ReplyDeleteHow did "I have the strong belief that no show, no matter how good it is, SHOULD go beyond ten seasons." get translated to "I have the strong belief that no show, no matter how good it is, CAN go beyond ten seasons." By so many people at once? And did everyone skip the whole "no matter how good it is" part as well?
ReplyDeleteI never said a TV show can't be interesting beyond ten seasons, or can't go beyond ten seasons to begin with. I said that no matter how good a show is, it SHOULDN'T go beyond ten seasons.
I have a few good reasons for this:
1) A lot of good shows usually get canceled to keep around the old favorite. How many TV shows over the years could have succeeded with a renewal if they weren't thrown aside to continue a show that has been around for such a long time?
2) If you can't tell the story you want to tell, or show what you want to show within 10 seasons then you're taking too damn long. NCIS does this more and more each season. It takes that show FOREVER to do anything because they know they have the time to do it. It's lazy as hell writing and a serious problem with the industry that people ignore.
3) The longer an actor sticks with a single series, the less likely they are to find a new role when it ends. It has happened so many times in the past. Some actors get lucky and manage to stay relevant, but most seem to relegate themselves to guest roles for years.
4) It inspires networks to go with what works and not try anything new. These kinds of shows continuing for so long is the reason why television is full of 90% cop, medical dramas and procedurals. They're a safe bet, but it's gotten to the point where anything different rarely lasts beyond the first season. It's also one of the biggest contributing factors as to why the Science Fiction genre is dying out.
Ten seasons is more than enough time for ANY show. Anything beyond that inadvertently hurts other things.
I agree with some of the things you say but if you're blaming long-running shows for killing sci fi I heartily disagree. TV is a business. What company would get rid of a top-selling item to debut something new especially if the item had been a top seller for years, generating tons of revenue? That makes no sense business wise. You provide what your customers want or you go out of business. Sci fi is dying on TV for only one reason - not enough Nielsen viewers are watching it.
ReplyDeleteLike you said, there is nothing TV likes more than a trend. I guarantee that if Terra Nova, Alcatraz, or Fringe had gotten NCIS ratings there would be a whole lot of dinosaurs, time jumping, and bizarre science on TV next season. If sci fi fans want to keep sci fi on the air, they have to find a way to make it profitable for networks to keep trying it. You can't blame long-running series for that. They are obviously giving the majority of the people what they want and that's what every network's job is. You may not like cop/medical dramas but the majority of people do, as proven by the ratings. If a procedural is taken off the air, another one will follow it because that's what's been proven to work. Whereas, high concept shows have been proven to fail for the most part. I am actually surprised that the networks are trying as many of them as they are right now.
We can rail about how unfair it is that shows that are superior in our opinion (and it is just our opinion) don't get the ratings but until sci fi / high concept shows become profitable there is absolutely no reason for the networks to pursue them from a business standpoint. In fact, the best thing that sci fi fans can do right now is to talk up Revolution to everyone they know and hope it doesn't suck. Because sci fi needs a big ratings win right now.
Supernatural 20 seasons.
ReplyDeleteWith all due respect, I believe the rather big-time awards (Emmys, Grammy's etc.) are the ones that actually mean anything. The People's Choice Awards has lost all its credibility for me, mostly because any TV viewer can vote - There's no real opinion behind what wins and what doesn't, it's just a matter of luck where the total number of people who actually noticed that the competition was open and whom decided to spend those few minutes clicking on VOTE, is what determines the winner. Tally all votes from everyone, and I am pretty sure (would actually bet money on it) that SPN would not win.
ReplyDeleteI know. I know. I KNOW. I said pay him. I said back up a Brinks truck. But disagree or not, you gotta be loyal.
ReplyDeleteThat depends on how next season pans out? yours is a personal opinion which some may agree with and others not.I was left in the end disappointed in season 7. I felt they had the stories there but didnt do very much with them.
ReplyDeleteHowever that doesnt mean that they cant do better in season 8 there is no definte set of rules for any show.Season 8 could be a disaster or very good that might just restore faith in those like me where things have been waning..
God, I just really wish I could get a sense of security with regards to Misha's place on the show.
ReplyDeleteYAAAAAY! I'm LOVIN it!
ReplyDeleteAwesome news! CW will keep the boys through seasons 9 and 10! I think season 8 is going to be just fantastic and I am really looking forward to seeing it. With every season there have been many surprises along the way and I expect nothing less with this upcoming season.
ReplyDeleteSame here, I don't like the direction the show took after season 5. A few episodes here and there where pretty awesome, but I didn't like the general direction. I wish Eric would come back...
ReplyDeletebesides, if all the people who are angry at one point stop watching the show, the ratings will drop. pretty show no one wants that to happen.
ReplyDelete
