Suburgatory - Season 2 - Malin Akerman cast

Aug 23, 2012

After an exhaustive search, ABC’s sophomore comedy has tapped Malin Akerman (Rock of Ages, Childrens Hospital) to play Alex, the estranged mother of Jane Levy‘s Tessa, TVLine has learned.

Alex, who will appear in this season’s Thanksgiving and Christmas episodes, is described as a beautiful, free-spirited singer/songwriter who’s never met her daughter. Her urge to form a relationship with Tessa has finally outweighed her fear and shame so she attempts to spend the holidays with her, hoping that the past won’t haunt either of them anymore.

“I’m a huge, nerdy fan [of Malin's] and this was an extensive search for the right actress to play such a pivotal role in our show,” raved series creator Emily Kapnek. “It turned out to be well worth the wait. She’s funny, gorgeous and incredibly charismatic, and I know her chemistry with Jeremy Sisto and Jane Levy is going to be off the charts. Malin is a comedy writer’s dream, both beautiful and comedically fearless. I’m over the moon about her agreeing to play Alex.”

  1. So a blonde and a brunette produced a redhead? Okay...

Love her, but now who I pictured as Tessa's mom. Excited anyway!

  2. Nothing against Akerman but this is baffling.

Akerman is 11 years older than Jane Levy. This is going to look awkward onscreen and It's going to seem like George committed a statutory offense.

  3. Interesting casting choice.

I really don't mind that Tessa's mum is blonde and that her dad has brown hair (please don't call a grown man like Jeremy Sisto a "brunette" ^^), but they better make a joke or two about it (with reflections from characters like Malik or Lisa, for instance).

Glad that one of the few good new comedies of last season is back (and in such a great time slot). I have the feeling this season's slate of new comedies will be extremely weak (cable and major networks combined).

About the age difference between Jane Levy and Malin Akerman, Jeremy Sisto is only 15 years older than Jane Levy (who looks a bit younger than 22), it's also quite unrealistic but it didn't strike me as shocking, so maybe it won't be noticeable here as well.

  4. "...so maybe it won't be noticeable here as well."

Maybe but the hair and makeup department will have their work cut out for them.

  5. I have a redhead friend who is the daughter of two brunette parents. It's possible. Her grandma is redheaded.

  6. She looks so young, but so does George. I'll wait and see what she'll do with the role. I have high hopes because I love Suburgatory, so she better own it. She's beautiful!

  7. Maybe it's just me, but I can see it.

  8. This is very odd indeed. Not to mention the blonde hair.

  9. To be fair, it is possible to have a red-headed child even if neither parents have red hair but the parents both have to be carriers of the MC1R gene.

  10. well its not so bad if you think Tessa is what 16? and maybe Malin will play her actual ages of 34/35. not so bad then.

  11. Yep, I know, but on TV one gets used to getting the obvious characterizations and one kind of expects a red head.Yet I would love if Malin dyed her hair red (she has shaved her head and eyebrows for a movie, so not impossible).
She still seems to young to be Tessa's mom in my opinion too.

  12. "She still seems too young to be Tessa's mom in my opinion too."
Agreed. They may be able to do something with hair, makeup, & wardrobe to help that. I have my doubts though.

"Yet I would love if Malin dyed her hair red"
Like you mentioned, she went darker before and it looked good too.

  13. I am rooting for it to work fine. And Malin probably would look gorgeous with any hair colour (her skin tone allows her to try basically any hair colour).
