    It was almost just like The Closer, and the only thing missing was Brenda Leigh. Kyra Sedgwick was awesome and The Closer's final hour was a great sendoff for her, but I've always been a fan of Captain Raydor. She's so calculative, and she oozes dignity and is always the voice of reason. She can play the pragmatic role that Brenda was never able to quite master. Wherever Brenda would jump straight for the kill and sometimes lose her cases and murderers because of her brazen tactics, Raydor always found a way to have the rules be met, yet also get the job done effectively. I really think that if they can give McDonnell plenty of good meaty character-driven stories, we can have a new chapter in the Closer series that will be fun to continue through several more years.

    One thing I didn't like was the quick plea bargain stuff, trying to save money, etc. That story tactic will get old rather quickly.

    If the whole series will be like this the game Deal or No Deal well the series will end in just around 6-7 episodes.

    I have mixed feelings about Major Crimes' pilot episode.

    Likes:
    - The whole team being given more storyline and focus. And, they still pretty much acted the same. Love Tao yelling out "Hi Chief!" towards Fritz's cellphone, as Fritz answered Brenda Leigh's call. ;)
    - Sykes - Yeah, I actually liked her. I'm so surprised, because I rarely like a newbie added so quickly, without testing her out first. But so far, I think she's a hoot, and quite interesting.
    - Rusty - The kid's not too bad. Pretty good actor too. Although, I'd prefer he stay a recurring guest star, much like Brenda Leigh's parents. An overcrowded group stretches the storylines too thin imo.

    Dislikes:

    - Capt Raydor: I actually liked her, up until maybe the last couple
    episodes of The Closer, and this episode. I automatically liked, and was
    intriqued by Capt Raydor sheerly due to the goodwill she garnered when
    she was President Roslin on Battlestar Galactica. Plus, when The Closer
    started softening her character up a bit, to become an ally and friend
    to Brenda Leigh, that made me like her more. What really bothered me
    about her was that both shows (The Closer & Major Crimes) seems to
    be hammering it in to the fans how Capt Raydor's character is 'better'
    than Deputy Chief Johnson. I get that Capt Raydor knows how to work
    within the system and is more diplomatic than Brenda Leigh, but surely
    Major Crimes can work in how Raydor is good at her job, without
    undermining Johnson's work over the years.


    - The writing, comparing old show to new show - As a fan of The Closer
    & Brenda Leigh, it really annoys the hell out of me that I'm
    essentially being told, through none too subtle writing, that my beloved
    show (The Closer) & Brenda Leigh, did a lot of things wrong, and
    Major Crimes is going to do it better. Don't diss fan favorites, or
    you'll be losing viewers fast.


    - Bloated cast - There are way too many people in the main cast. The
    cast picture was overcrowded. I'm probably unclear about who is
    recurring, and who is actually on contract, but they need to trim that
    cast a bit.

    More thoughts on the cast:
    - The main squad from the Major Crimes unit should definitely
    be on contract, with storylines revolving around them (i.e., Flynn
    & Provenza, Sanchez, Tao).
    - Buzz: Likely an
    unpopular opinion, but I think Buzz should be a recurring, not main, on
    contract, cast. Buzz is lovable, but frankly, the actor isn't a very good
    actor.
    - ME: The ME doctor is fine in small bursts as recurring, but I actually wouldn't have minded if the show rotated the ME sometimes, like they're doing with ADA's. I think the ME and Fritz are both recurring, so that's fine with me.
    - Fritz: It probably wouldn't be prudent to make Fritz main cast, since the FBI isn't needed in all cases, and there is that awkwardness of not showing him with Brenda at home anymore. (I did appreciate Major Crimes indicating Brenda Leigh still exists off camera though. It's the worst when they pretend a character never existed or don't mention them, like they disappeared.)

    I agree. In terms of the writing and storyline, it seems rather unsatisfying to the viewer. Some of the Major Crimes Unit's reactions really mirrored my own as a viewer. If the show keeps doing storylines with no real payoff in seeing the guilty get punished, or at least write it better to show the guilty got what they deserved, then I am one viewer who'll definitely not me coming back. The Closer & Brenda Leigh may have had their flaws, but it was usually pretty satisfying to me when she broke down the guilty party and made them take responsibility for their actions. Here's hoping Major Crimes reworks their scripts a bit to make the writing better.

    I don't know what it is, but I didn't connect. Maybe it's because it feels like they are having to re-gel the cast in this new paradigm. I think what's happening with Provenza is interesting and a natural source of conflict, but...it's weird because I was hooked on The Closer immediately.


    So, far the cases haven't been nearly as interesting or engrossing. And I loathe the deal making aspect. It all feels artificial, especially since it seems to be that that's going to be the formula of the show. I hope that's not going to be the case. (is the whole 'season' in the can already?) I did realize that, given Provenza's dilema I suppose they had to use the deal paradigm for the first couple of cases. I think the "let's make a deal" approach might have felt better if it didn't feel so much like the easy way out. If they were fighting to make the case right up until they realized they had no other choice.


    Was it really necessary for Taylor to go back to being a dick? It was okay when he was first introduced because he was a bad guy.... incompetent and a jerk. But now he's coming across as a jerk that puts the solving of major crimes at the bottom of his priority list. Maybe something changed during the final eps of The Closer (I haven't watched yet and am not sure I will.) but informing Provenza of his new boss in the middle of a crime scene was done simply out of spite.


    I'll give it 2 more eps..but right now, they're losing me.

    RE: Raydor...I thought it was just me... It seems like whoever wrote this first episode did a little research on the character but stopped before the episodes where Brenda and Raydor came to respect each other.


    I had the same feeling with Taylor. Glad they got rid of the clown aspect to the character but...urg...


    I agree with you about Buzz. He's always been a recurring character and there's no real reason to try and bump him up.

    Thank you for the reply! I also agree with your point about Taylor. It does seem like the show is regressing most of the characters back to their early "The Closer" habits (i.e., Taylor the imcompetent clown/jerk, Provenza & Major Crimes Unit team not liking new girl/Raydor while needing her to tell them how to do their job better, etc.). I was hoping Major Crimes would evolve the characters further, not start out with them regressed, and them rebuild them back to how they were in the last season of The Closer. I don't know. Has the show gotten better? I haven't watched since the pilot.

    Since the Provenze discontent story seemed to be over a couple of episodes I decided to withhold my judgement (as to whether it was going to get better or not) until I've seen the third episode; which I have not watched yet.

    Have you checked back in? I thought the last couple of episodes (which were minus Taylor) felt like they were finding their own voice and were much more interesting and compelling.
