Le Tunnel / The Tunnel — Ben Richards is the British showrunner

Aug 14, 2012

Ben Richards said at the French Comic-Con that he's working on a second draft of the pilot of the upcoming French/British adaptation of the Swedish/Danish series Bron/Broen.

Richards created Party Animals (1 season, 8 episodes) and Outcasts (1 season, 8 episodes). Furthermore, he wrote the second season of The Fixer (6 episodes) and worked on Spooks seasons 2-8 (credited on 16 episodes).

Le Tunnel / The Tunnel will be 50% in French, 50% in English.

Le Tunnel / The Tunnel will air in 2013 on Sky Atlantic (This is Jinsy, Hit and Miss) in the UK and on Canal+ (Engrenages, Mafiosa, Braquo, Maison Close, etc) in France.

  1. Hopefully this can live up to the original!

While at first I liked The Killing on AMC, by the end of the second season I just did not care anymore. I watched it to complete it, but my interest level just went downhill fast after that Season 1 finale debacle..In the end it just was not nearly as well done as Danish original Forbrydelsen.

I hope this remake or re-imagining can keep the quirkiness of CID Saga Norren without making her a caricature of a cop with social issues a la Monk or that ilk. From what I have seen of Richards projects the tone could stay in the very grounded and real drama genre which would make me very happy indeed!

I'm glad they will be keeping the scenes taking place in France in French. Nothing annoys me more than shows taking place in "foreign" locations and having everybody speak English! Well things do bother me more but I loathe it. It cheapens the production and overall quality of the the project in my opinion.

  2. I trust Canal+ and Sky Atlantic has proven its worth with Hit and Miss, I have no doubt they will do it right. About French people speaking French, I'm not going to argue that ^^.

The concept of Bron/Broen is a good one for a worthy remake, one that is different and cannot mimic the original because it's based on the culture of the countries in which it takes place. I haven't seen the original series yet but there's already a huge difference between finding a body on a bridge and at the middle of an 50km long undersea tunnel, I'm curious to see where it's going from there.
