Calling it now: The Neighbors will be the first show cancelled!
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm the person who tends to ignore critics because 99% of the time, I have the totally opposite opinion of them. Can't wait for the new shows!
I would like to know how accurate these critics round tables are.... I wonder how the predictions from last year's videos held up. From what I recall they are fairly accurate on the worst shows, but the best shows were a mixed bag.
ReplyDeleteOddly I just read a review of how bad The Following is and was surprised since I had heard good word of mouth before that article. Now this round table has it as one of the better new shows. Go figure...
I'm happy to see Last Resort getting some positive hype as the season approaches. While I'm not sold on it yet, I want to like it. I will be checking it out for sure. How can you not? It's Shawn Ryan and Andre Braugher dammit!
I think that Emily Owens and Beauty and the Beast will be canceled
ReplyDeleteIf I remember it right, last year they picked up Eight shows, of which two of them are Terra Nova and Ringer. We all know how dreadful, the fate of those shows was.
ReplyDeleteEither the new crop of fall comedies is absolutely dreadful or critics are seeing something in FOX's Ben & Kate and The Mindy Project that I'm not because they both look terrible.
ReplyDeleteNo big surprises on their lists other than the sad state of new comedies. I've read that the pilot of the Mindy project was so so, but I'm still going to give it a 3 ep trial. The only review that made me change my mind was that I wasn't planning on checking Nashville out at all, but I'll give it a look see based on these reactions. It'll be interesting to see how their predictions wash out. I'm not sure but I think that the critics didn't think that OUaT would last a season because they weren't sure that it would be as well received as it was...
ReplyDeleteTotally agree. I sometimes wonder if these "critics" are on the payroll.
ReplyDeleteWell, I am not against females or something, but most of the critics here are females. And I am sure, there are considerable number of male viewers for at least 70% of the shows. So I really doubt if their choices are right. Also last season, many of the shows, which they chose as the best were cancelled very soon. Supernatural being reviewed only by female critics(some of them behave more like fan-girls), is partly the reason why characters like Castiel are elevated to top positions and we lost beautiful characters like Bela, Ruby etc. They virtually eliminated every female character out of the show.(I was not active online back then) But I strongly believe the show would have been better and different if it were reviewed by a few male critics too.
ReplyDeleteI wonder why no one picked up Revolution. Not even a mention surprises me.
Absolutely. At the very least, you have to question the legitimacy of their choices. For instance, I'm not at all surprised that TV Line's Meg Masters has no "worst show" because her job is all about interviews and exclusives and pointing a finger at a specific show may limit her access to such things.
ReplyDeleteNot shocked about the quality of the sitcoms.
ReplyDeleteAs for dramas, I thought Nashville would get picked as the best one.
Worst new show was funny lol so many bad shows they couldn't choose, but I didn't expect Cult to be on the list.
Neighbors are gonna be canceled first and then probably Guys with Kids and Family Tolls (not sure if its midseason show).
Ha all the cw shows are in the worst catogory lol and I'm sure they won't dissapoint. They will all be cancelled quickly I'm sure.
ReplyDeleteExactly. Don't want to bit the hand that feeds them.
ReplyDeleteThat's why I prefer our limited reviews of the some of the shows as we have a) No vested interested and b) They are written by TV Fans not paid "critics"
Oh yeah, I completely forgot about Revolution, guess they found it mediocre, but there's one slight mention, when the critic says Arrow has better action than some other shows *cough Revolution *cough
ReplyDeleteWhile I do not put much weight into critics words since a lot of it can be bought, this does NOT smell in any way good for Cult since it already looked like it could be either really good or REALLY bad.
ReplyDeleteBeauty and the beast being awful is no surprise though.
I dont know, i always get the feeling that NBC will pull the trigger before ABC this fall. But i might be wrong.
ReplyDeleteActually Supernatural have been criticized quite a lot in last few seasons by critics. The problem is the actual fanbase, especially the more vocal minority of it that would send threats to the show creators and etc. :)
ReplyDeleteAs for revolution? No surprise, its very much a genre show and critics ignore genre shows even when they deserve recognition(*cough*BuffynotgettinganyEMMY'sfors5*cough*)
I dont think cancelled. Im looking forward to Arrow, even tough i have hated CW since Veronica Mars ended. I think Arrow will stick, but the rest will go down maybe.
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping partners does well, I'm going to watch it. That's the only new show I think ill tune into.
ReplyDeleteI have seen 10 mins of the pilot. I like Ben & Kate.
ReplyDeleteI hate the cw as well, there's not one show on that network id watch.
ReplyDeleteWasn't there one mention of it during the best drama video? I think one of the female critics commented about how Revolution's action scenes were terrible compared to a different show... Last Resort maybe?
ReplyDeleteJudging by the trailers and clips I've seen I can't disagree with the worst new shows. All of them look awful, some offensively bad, others bland.
ReplyDeleteI think The Mindy Project got a lot of love because people really want to see Mindy succeed and do well with it and are hoping the show improves from the pilot. Based on what I've seen then the whole Bridget Jones style is really not going to appeal to me in the slightest.
I've seen most show pilots (don't ask how lol)
ReplyDeleteBest Shows
The Following
Last Resort
666 Park Avenue
Zero Hour
Worst Shows
Neighbors (this is so bad it's funny)
Cult (really wanted to like this)
Partners
Beauty and the Beast
None of the sitcoms looked great to me from the previews I watched.
ReplyDeleteIn particular every one on their best list I thought looked terrible! XD
I have relatively high hopes, but low expectations for Zero Hour!
ReplyDeleteI love a good conspiracy series. I have heard very little outside of the bad reviews so I'm glad to read your positive comment!
It's crazy that these critics are basing everything just on the pilot. Pilots aren't always the best indication to how a show is going to be.
ReplyDeleteA long time ago... we used to be friends...
ReplyDeleteHere are the Eight shows picked up last time, I don't know if its the same set of critics and I guess most of them were cancelled.
ReplyDeleteAlcatraz – Fox – Warner Bros. - cancelled
Apartment 23 - ABC – 20th Century Fox - (I don't know)
Awake – NBC – 20th Century Fox - cancelled
Falling Skies – TNT – DreamWorks - Renewed
New Girl – Fox – 20th Century Fox - (I don't know)
Ringer - CW – CBS Studios - Cancelled
Smash - NBC – DreamWorks/Universal Media - Cancelled
Terra Nova – Fox – 20th Century Fox - Cancelled
I think Smash was renewed for Season 2.
ReplyDeleteI have no idea.
ReplyDeleteYes, it's not brilliant but I saw an early pilot screener but it's certainly held my attention and I enjoyed it and think it has some potential if they tighten up the writing a little.
ReplyDeleteTo put my picks into context some of my fav shows over the past few years are
Lost, Rubicon, Person of Interest (first few episodes), Supernatural, Homeland, Dexter, Fringe, Chuck, The Walking Dead, AHS, SOA,Boardwalk Empire, Psych, Falling Skies
Yes, New Girl, Apt 23 and Smash were all renewed
ReplyDeleteBut that's all they have to go on.
ReplyDeleteIm usually that way also, but i miss superheroes on tv. I will at least check out the pilot and more. They have a nice rooster of DC Comics-characters (even tough im a big Marvel-fanboy). I will check out, i kinda liked Birds of Prey also, could be more that way than the garbage Smallville ended up being.
ReplyDeleteReally surprised about Cult since I've heard nothing but good things about it prior to this. Maybe they just found it too hard to follow?
ReplyDeletePretty similar likes outside of AHS and Falling Skies. I tried both, I tried Falling Skies for the entire first season and 3 or 4 episodes of Season 2, but I could never really get into it and finally gave up. AHS was much easier to dismiss for me despite liking many of the actors. It just felt like it was trying too hard and the style was not for me in the end.
ReplyDeleteI've seen several reviews where its been labelled bad and some as average. I was surprised but yeah its apparently not all that.
ReplyDeleteI like some superhero shows too, but I am selective I guess. I did manage to watch all of Smallville though. It was not exactly great TV to me, but I was able to be entertained from week to week.
ReplyDeleteGlad you listed 666 PA as one of the best, cause thats the one i really wanna see.
ReplyDeleteAnd you know when you say don't ask, people are gonna ask right? lmao.
I've seen a good few of them too and I have to agree with you on all of them I'm afraid.
ReplyDeleteI saw that pilot it was really good
ReplyDeleteDo you mind if I ask how/where you managed to watch the pilots. I've always wondered how people get to watch them
ReplyDeletebeauty and the beast future worth show by fact and by far
ReplyDeleteChicago Fire. This is not the only time I've heard bad things about it. Guess I'll just forget about it.
ReplyDeleteGo On. I loved the pilot, so I'm not surprised the critics liked it (sort of).
Nashville. No interest, no matter what the critics say.
The Mindy Project. Well, we'll see. Wasn't planning on watching it.
Emily Owens. Every promo looks horrible. Will probably be canceled.
Vegas. I've been looking forward to it. Glad to hear the critics liked it.
More accurate than a Dexter-fanboy panel talking about Dexter. :)
ReplyDeleteI liked Go On.
ReplyDeleteWow, that lass from IMDB has really got it in for Revolution.
ReplyDeleteDisappointed with Cult but oh, well...
ReplyDeleteI agree that a lot of female characters do get short shrift, but I find it a bit weird that you blame that on the female critics who follow the show, most of whom regularly decry the lack of convincing female characters who connect with the audience. Most female viewers loved both Ellen and Pamela - examples of strong women who weren't tiny slips who had to be rescued every 5 minutes, and who fit into the vibe of the show, which is why viewers responded positively - and were pretty upset about them being killed off. Bela just didn't fit at all and the writers ran out of reasons to wedge her into storylines, which is why they wrote her out.
ReplyDeleteOften the big bugbear among fans is with casting rather than the characters themselves. They loved Katie Mitchell's Ruby, in general didn't love Genevieve Cortese's take on the character so much. The same goes for the most recent iteration of Meg. Clearly the writers love the current Meg, though, as they keep writing her back in, so I really don't think critics have much say in what goes on on the show.
Also plenty of female fans don't like Castiel at all (though personally I love him) and often complain about him ruining the show, so that's a silly generalisation as well.
If I would have listened to certain critics I would have never became a fan of Supernatural and Community
ReplyDeleteDon't listen to critics and just give the different shows a chance... It's all a matter of opinion.
ReplyDeleteThis is just about the pilots. Most of these pilots are going to end up being crap o getting canceled.
ReplyDeleteI rather listen to critics than watch 20 pilots, when most of the half will be crap.
ReplyDeleteThis is just about the pilots. You have to see the reactions from the next episodes. There are a lot of good series with crappy pilots or viceversa.
I feel the same way. Last year's best new sitcom (IMO) turned out to be NBC's "Bent" but the network basically killed it before it even aired. when it did, they buried it in March and burned off all of the episodes in three weeks. I haven't seen a really solid comedy prospect since then.
ReplyDeleteOkay, 9 times out of 10 I think most of these people are idiots, so I don't really care at all that they think Nashville is going to be a success (ha!). I know, I know, why did I even look at this. I couldn't help it. xD No wonder "critically acclaimed" shows bomb, whatever they are looking for it isn't entertainment (usually).
ReplyDeleteThanks for adding last year's as a comparison!
ReplyDeleteAll their lists were pretty inaccurate! XD
Half their best new shows got cancelled , half their worst new shows got renewed... .and I won't even touch the comedies since I thought all the new sitcoms outside of 2 Broke girls were terrible last year.
As always the best advice is to not take anyone's advice! XD
Watch what you like, but maybe keep in mind some terribly rated shows are going to get cancelled regardless of if you like them or not.
I actually far preferred Animal Practice to Go on of the two I watched so far.
ReplyDeleteI think AP will get cancelled in all likelihood, but I would watch that again before I watched 75% of the new sitcoms. 1 or 2 looked interesting to me if I recall, but even those did not look good! XD
I also saw both of those and I think they're both promising shows IF they can improve a handful of things from their pilots. Without some improvement, they might as well throw those two on the scrap heap with the rest of this year's comedies.
ReplyDeleteI've seen a large chunk of that pilot and I thought Lucy Punch was the only good thing about it.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree. I was so shocked to see The Mindy Project and Ben and Kate there that I even checked to see if I was reading the right list. They both look like crap. Either these critics are wrong, or the whole promo material was edited by a monkey.
ReplyDeleteYes, "offensively bad" is the perfect way to describe most of those shows. I feel offended by the awfulness of their promo material.
ReplyDeleteBela just didn't fit at all and the writers ran out of reasons to wedge her into storylines, which is why they wrote her out.< /i>
ReplyDeleteAre you a critic?
This is what I exactly feel about Castiel 90% of the time. But never felt the same about Bela and I am a guy. Seriously, the actress is hot and I guess same applies the other way round as far as Castiel is concerned.
Let's hope NBC learns a lesson this time and that they give the new shows time to evolve a bit. Grimm looked crappy IMO last year and now I like the show, Seinfeld had awful ratings for a while and then slowly took off (not comparing the greatness of Seinfeld to Grimm).
ReplyDeleteSometimes I wish new shows came with explanations as to why they were picked up because it would be really funny (or tragic) to be able to read the reasons for The Neighbors, Beauty and the Beast, Emily Owens, etc. I just can't think of any (especially for the neighbors)
Goodness. I m / was hooked to Grimm And how it s on the worst shows list is beyond me...
ReplyDeleteI think there are plenty of situations where deciding to go ahead with a TV series isn't about quality but rather profitability and whether or not people will watch it.
ReplyDeleteLet's face it. Quality TV and successful TV aren't always one and the same. That's why reality shows exist.
"Beauty and the beast being awful is no surprise though."
ReplyDeleteThis is exactly my problem with the legitimacy of these types of "critics picks" articles.
There were two people who voted for B&tB for "worst" and they were both guys who probably wouldn't be caught dead watching anything on The CW, let alone a show like Beauty and the Beast. I would never expect that show to get a good review from the ultra-hipster "AV Club."
I'm not defending B&tB as much as I am calling into question the legitimacy of stuff like this and to remind people to consider the source when reading articles like these.
To be honest Grimm improved a lot in its first few episodes ;)
ReplyDeleteIt had a bit shaky start but it fast became one of the best shows on tv. ;)
Yes. It's on last year's worst list, and I wasn't too sure about it myself in the first two episodes. Then it started to get really good and now it's my favorite.
ReplyDeleteInteresting that Revolution wasn't apart of either list...
ReplyDeleteMe too! I reread it them like 4 times!
ReplyDeleteWell Arrow might end up having greater action sequences, but most the time I tend to not stick with very much on the CW because I don't care to much for the story lines/writing as I always end up feeling like this is something I might have watched 15 years ago (when I was still in high school)...
ReplyDeleteWith that being said, I hope Kripke keeps with in Bad Robot's other writers' great dialogue (Pilot aside).
I always want good story too, but in an Action series I do want good, believable action scenes. Good action on an average show can make me keep watching. Case in point Nikita on CW. The writing is average, the acting from the leads is average at best, but the action is exceptional for a TV show and that fact alone lets me enjoy most episodes.
ReplyDeleteWithout good writing and acting no series will ever make it to my "Must Watch" list, but I can be entertained by good entertainment shows if the action is up to snuff. Burn Notice, Hawaii Five-O etc....
I hope Revolution is better than I expect, but I have yet to be sold by any of the promos. In fact my expectations have lowered after the promos XD
Smash did not get cancelled. New girl and apt 23 renewed as well
ReplyDeleteAccording to twitter comments (take it with a grain of salt of course), the Nashville pilot was shown on plane flights and there were a lot of positive comments.
ReplyDeleteThe Beauty & the Beast pilot was shown in Comic Con, a lot of the twitter comments were not positive. Plenty of positive comments given for the Following pilot shown however.
I read on another forum that the pilots of Red Widow from ABC and Save Me from NBC could be one to watch.
For some reason I want the Mob Doctor (FOX) show to work out even with the outlandish concept.
The Futoncritic site also has similar reviews to these critics.
Yeah, I get it, but I can even kind of understand that there are very tacky people, ahem, people with a particular "taste", who watch Jersey Shore or Whatever Housewives of Wherever or even the always deplorable Kardashians, but I really can't figure out who should be the demo for The Neighbors, for instance. Zombies? Mice?
ReplyDeleterandomly find them on the internet, mot of the time it'll just be like the first 20 minutes. Unfortunately they often get removed quite quickly due to infringment rights. I should mention that they are sometimes unrevised versions of pilots and not necesarily the version that will play on TV when premier times comes.
ReplyDeleteDisappointed that Cult looks as if it's not going to live up to my expectations. I was hoping for something good as I like Robert Knepper. Damn shame.
ReplyDeleteReally can't stand Maureen Ryan but, all in all, this was a very informative feature.
ReplyDeleteI've seen all of the new shows. Here are my picks:
ReplyDeleteBest Shows
The Carrie Diaries
The Following
Last Resort
The New Normal
Arrow
Worst Shows
Neighbors
Cult
Ben and Kate
Malibu County
Beauty and the Beast
I watched the pilot for Ben and Kate and did not find it funny or compelling at all. The Goodwin Games was actually much better.
ReplyDeleteThanks Kyle, nice one.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't to found of their round tables either...none of them talked about anything significant at all. It was more like their initial reactions to watching it, rather than them dissecting it...
ReplyDeleteTo that IMDB critic: At least *cough* Revolution *cough* has more of an original concept and it will certainly have more viewers.
ReplyDeleteWill watch for sure:
ReplyDelete- Revolution
- Last Resort
- Arrow
- 666 Park Avenue
- Vegas
- The Following
- Go On (I actually wasn't planning on watching this one, but I have seen the pilot since it came out so earlier on and I really enjoyed it, I like my comedies with a lot of heart and it has plenty)
Will see the first 2/3 episodes to decide:
- Nashville (I wasn't planning on watching it, despite the cast, because it does not sound like my type of show at all, but all the critics made me want to sample it at least)
- The New Normal (I have not liked a single Ryan Murphy project so far that I have seen, but for some reason this looks funny and with heart, so I will see how it is)
- Ben & Kate (as with Nasvhille, I wasn't planning on it, but the consistently awesome reviews made me want to try it)
- Cult (it's the opposite of Nashville and Ben & Kate.... I was really looking forward to it, but all the negative reviews made me doubt it... I will still give it a try though)
- Zero Hour (the only reason this one isn't on my "for sure" list is because it's hard to tell the type of show we will get from the trailers, so I have to wait to see a bit more)
I really wanted to get into Grimm, because it sounds exactly like the type of show I would like and I keep hearing people saying good stuff about it, but I have gone through episode 16 and I still cannot get into it as wanted to... I find it boring most of the times! It's a shame, really, I honestly wanted to like it!
ReplyDeleteWith me, it's like, these guys will not make me not watch a change I have already made up my mind about watching, no matter how much they hate it (see Cult), even if they make me go into it with lower expectations. They can however make me decide to sample shows I had decided not to sample (see Nashville), just to see whether I like them or not... No harm is actually done ;)
ReplyDeleteI can't argue with that. There are some shows that get series orders from various networks that defy all logical explanation.
ReplyDelete....and yet Revolution will more then likely get cancelled after 1 season, while Arrow will more then likely be around for a long time :)
ReplyDeleteIt seemed to me that they saw the pilot as having potential, but the fact it was is on NBC and on Friday nights they saw no hope for it.
ReplyDeleteDidn't actually say anything bad about it
The mytharc doesn't really kick in until ep. 13. It starts to pick up speed about ep. 17, and the finale is really good and action-packed. I was a little bored too until that last bunch of episodes. After the finale I was hooked. It sounds like this season is going to be more action-oriented/badass and has gotten off to a strong start.
ReplyDeleteSame.
ReplyDeleteI have tried out shows critics adore if it one of those rare overwhelming waves of critical acclaim for a series.. I think I watched Mad Men for that reason alone, but it is a very rare occurrence.
I have avoided shows that were panned by critics though. I will archive them and watch them once I have heard the shows fate. That way I know going in that there will only be "X" number of episodes and the show is cancelled.
I did that for Awake last year. I still enjoyed the show, but because I knew it was cancelled before watching it I got to enjoy it for what it was without being too attached to the show or upset that it was not renewed.
From everything I read this season will be myth arc heavy thankfully!
ReplyDeleteThe show did not work as well as a traditional procedural, but I liked it much, much more when the myth arc kicked in at the end of the season!
Also, I will sample Chicago Fire. As bad as critics make it sound like, I am sort of attracted by the concept. If it is well done, it could be really entertaining, although I am not expecting must see tv
ReplyDelete@chris684:disqus I think I will take your insight into consideration, and maybe I will try to finish the first season of the show at least. It's really one of those which I want to love dearly, so I am willing to give it many chances! And I tend to like shows more when they are heavy on mytharc, so that's good! I will see how it goes! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI'm of the opposite opinion. I think that Grimm is one of the few shows that does well as a quasi-procedural program and, as a moderately rated show on a low rated broadcast network, making Grimm more serialized is a good way to erode its viewership and get it canceled. I believe that Grimm's longevity is, at least in part, tied to it being an easily accessible show and if it loses its delicate balance of serial and procedural Grimm could be on borrowed time before you know it.
ReplyDeleteSorry but Dan Fienberg has put The Vampire Diaries in his top ten list for two years in a row.
ReplyDeleteWell the critics are saying it improved. That doesn't mean is good, it just improved from what it was before (pure garbage).
ReplyDeleteYeah well I also try to avoid shows that I think are likely to be canceled. That's why I didn't bother with Alcatraz when I realized it would soon be canceled, didn't even start it. That thing you are mentioning of watching one season only knowing it will be canceled really doesn't work for me, I like to get attached. It's always very difficult though to avoid shows that will be canceled with absolute certain. I lost Terra Nova this year for instance, although I dont regreat watching that one and still say it was cancaled way too soon.
ReplyDeleteI actually thought it was likely to be renewed from the pilot alone. It was much better than I expected based on many peoples reactions to promo clips and the critic's reviews. The only really bad thing in the pilot was the lead actor and how wooden he was. That ended a few episodes in as expected.
ReplyDeleteIt started okay to good and improved to very good. But I may be biased as a fan of the producers' other shows and of the genre in general.
I wouldn't be so sure about anything on the CW. People were all over Ringer, for example, and look what happened to it. Arrow might get the can as soon as Revolution for all I know.
ReplyDeletelol
ReplyDeleteApartment 23 and New Girl were both renewed. And so was Smash.
ReplyDeleteAlthough you have a point on Ringer, I think that was an isolated case. In fact, from what I have seen/ heard so far, I think Arrow is the new show with the highest chances of being renewed for a second season!
ReplyDelete@Bruce_F:disqus, that is always the danger, isn't it? Most shows loose viewership as they become more serialized (see Fringe) but, IMO, quality also tends to increase! I actually like a good procedural (HF0, POI, White Collar, Castle Bones), but even then, the best episodes tend to be the ones that are part of a bigger arc, in my opinion
ReplyDeleteYou could be right... I think that Grimm will not likely draw in more procedural fans, but may draw in some genre fans that ignored Grimm because of bad reviews etc...
ReplyDeleteMost genre shows tend to be serialized and most genre fans tend to like serialized shows. And possibly more importantly, serialized shows tend to have fans that will be passionate about a lower-rated show and be willing to commit for a longer period of time.
I think Grimm can only go up by becoming more serialized. Honestly though I'm not sure how much it will go up in ratings no matter the format.... On any other network the series would have been cancelled already. I'm not sure it has a future beyond next season unless it builds up its core audience and I think that is genre fans who tend to like serials.
"Honestly though I'm not sure how much it will go up in ratings no matter the format...."
ReplyDeleteI can agree with that.
No offense but are you watching the show or you only saw the first couple of episodes? The first 2-3 episodes were low average for me, the first half season started to shape the show, but it took around the end of the season to really get going.
ReplyDeleteThe first episodes of season 2 were great.
This will sound stupid I know, but personnally I can't get around the fact that the ''Beast'' is a hot guy half of the time.
ReplyDeleteRight from the start I don't like cheesy soap, romantic whatever so I can't stand 95% of the CW shows, like the vampires and everything, so I'm not really neutral^^;;... but I did loved a very old movie that was a bit of a soap, cause it has that old lesson that beauty standard aren't everything about a person....and now you see ''Beauty and THE BEST'' with that guy >_>
I get you. Seems to me like a legitimate reason not to like it.
ReplyDeleteSorry but David Greenwalt could not create "pure garbage" supernatural show even if he tried.
ReplyDeleteSure it might not be "best show ever" but its certainly original, well-written, thrilling and snappy at the right times. Also it reminding me of Angel The Series is a huge plus too.
Am I the only one who is not excited about The Mindy Project - it seems from the promos that she took her character from the office made her a doctor and put her in NYC. Doesn't really scream good to me. According to this list, I'll be proven wrong - but we'll see.
ReplyDeleteI didn't see this until after I commented - but I don't get why the Mindy Project got 7 likes unless it's better than the promos make it out to be.
ReplyDeleteThe fact that the network moved Grimm to Mondays shows that they have confidence in it. And it's on 9:00 (CST) so it misses the DWTS conflict.
ReplyDeleteAlso not excited, and I rarely watched The Office.
ReplyDeleteI'm not excited about that either ... it seems like how everyone behaved with 'New Girl' last year and I think was the only one who didn't like it ... although I eventually got around to watching it and liked it... I don't think i can say the same for this one ... she just looks awkward! :-/
ReplyDeleteLooks like i'm not going to have to add any new sitcom to my watching list! Good only, i have no time to add new shows cos i still have to catch up with shows from last season! Urgh ... i hate my life!
ReplyDeleteBut ... i'm really looking forward to Last Resort and Revolution (give me anything post-apocalyptic and I'll watch it till the end of days! :-p)
So do you watch the show or don't you?
ReplyDeleteIt's a bit rich for you to complain about female critics acting like teenage girls when it comes to Supernatural, only to then complain about Bela leaving because you thought she was hot. The female characters who last on the show tend to be ones who were brought in for more than just sex appeal - this also means that the writers are more committed to keeping them in even when the fans aren't so keen. Fans also react negatively where they don't think the actors do justice to the writing. Unsurprisingly, they like quality drama. The central two actors are extremely attractive men and that has undoubtedly encouraged a devoted female fanbase, but that doesn't make those fans morons.
So yes, if it bothers you when female characters leave purely because you thought they were really hot, then you probably are watching the wrong show. Maybe try 90210?
I dont like the Office, never liked it, even though I have tried some episodes. So Mindy means nothng to me, and the promos dont excite me either... So youre not alone. But I might give it a try come midseason, depending on how are ratings and opinions
ReplyDeleteHaven't seen it, but I looove Lucy Punch. She is soo funny! I would even watch Shitney if she were on it.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, let me make it clear, I am a teenager. So, its perfect normal for me to complain a hot girl leaving the show. And I never said that its the only reason. IMO, she was appealing in many other ways. She must have at least been brought back as a demon, if female-hating critics permit.
ReplyDeleteBut, you didn't reply to the other Castiel part of my comment. Writers have long back run out of storylines for Castiel too. Then why is he brought back? Why this gender-discrimination?
I don't know if you accept this or not, but I am 200% sure, Supernatural has more male viewers than female viewers.
Where the hell is REVOLUTION??
ReplyDeleteI am also very excited about Revolution, no matter what the critics say, so dont wory, youre not alone! At least they are not hating on it either
ReplyDeleteThe Fringe fans are behind this so right now i'm not worried, but it bugs me to no end that we get pushed aside, & overlooked. We already had a good review, but one or two couldn't hurt to get more people interested!
ReplyDeleteI think that for a show like this to survive, getting people to tune in initially will probably not be the problem (see Flashforward). Sustaining that audience will be the determining factor, and reviews dont matter that much for that purpose.
ReplyDeleteThis might need to be seen from the get go,from what previews and review i read it appears something happens that gives a clue.I think they want to grab you and not let go,not like what Flashforward did i could be wrong,JJ Abrams has his vision,we'll be along for the ride!
ReplyDeleteFox has THREE highly rated shows? Better get to Vegas. Cubs may win World Series.
ReplyDeleteIt's always been my opinion that comedies have to "sneak up" on you. The things they TRY to make funny usually aren't.
ReplyDeleteIf you want some entertaining reading, pull up the "I am human" video on You Tube by the Brian Buckley Band. I read over 15 pages of comments and laughed my ass off. The degree of fanaticism is way off the charts. (Not that that's bad or anything.)
ReplyDeleteWell, I have to watch the pilot to decide. I mean based on last year alone, I disagree about Smash and Terra Nova as best new dramas and New Girl, ugh. I also love Grimm.
ReplyDeleteThe CW can't afford to cancel them all. My bet is that at least Arrow and 1-2 other shows stick around.
ReplyDeleteOkay 1. The CW, which broadcasts Supernatural, aims all of their shows at women aged 18-34. It's very hard to get information about the ratings for Supernatural among men, because they're not the CW's demographic, so I couldn't find many comparisons, but the Wikipedia page for the show says season 2, at least, was watched mostly by teen girls. I'll accept that the show probably has more male appeal than most CW shows, but most of its viewers are still female. For example, the season 7 premiere was watched by 48% male and 52% female viewers - so it was close to an even split but leaning towards women. Likewise in 2010 zap2it did a study of the gender split of different broadcast shows and found that more women watched Supernatural (in fact more women watched almost every show on TV):
ReplyDeletehttp://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2010/04/28/ladies-night-few-broadcast-primetime-shows-draw-more-men-than-women/50011/.
2. I didn't bother answering your claim that the writers have run out of things to do with Castiel, because that's entirely subjective. I don't agree at all and I still think they're finding interesting things to do with the character, but that's really a matter of opinion. Since season 5 they have scaled back his appearances until he was only in 3-4 episodes on season 7. So he's not hugely prominent anymore but they still have stories they want to tell.
My point was never whether, in my opinion, there are still things to do with these characters. Frankly, I'd be delighted if Cas got his own spinoff series, but my point is IT'S NOT UP TO ANYONE BUT THE WRITERS. They're the ones who have to come up with the stories. Bela was introduced because ratings took a massive dive in season 2 and they were trying to freshen up the show and appeal more to men. No doubt when they were trying to justify to the CW execs why the show should come back, they promised to introduced a hot female nemesis for Dean. It didn't work, the writers were uninspired by her and because of the writers' strike they didn't have time to develop her properly, so she went. Maybe you think she should have become a demon - well, lots of fans have lots of ideas for the show. That's why fanfiction happens. The fact is the writers weren't interested in pursuing that avenue, so it didn't happen.
3. The ridiculous thing about the debate we're having is that I agreed with you in my first post that women get a raw deal on Supernatural. I also wish the writers worked a bit harder to give them interesting things to do. My objection was to your claim that this was the fault of female critics and fans who are only interested in the cute men on the show, when female critics consistently lament the lack of well-developed female characters and the fact that the few who do appear are either incredibly annoying, are never seen again or all get killed off. But then again, apart from Castiel, EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER ON SUPERNATURAL APART FROM SAM AND DEAN GETS KILLED OFF. Maybe as a teenager who, as you said yourself, is still a bit preoccupied by hotness, you might not have realised this, but both adult men and women are able to differentiate between what is actually good and what their loins are telling them they're enjoying. It's out of order to imply that female critics can't judge quality the same as anyone else.
It's also doing the writers a disservice to imply that they are so in thrall to critics that they just change the show according to whatever some journalist has said about it. That's just not how the writing process works. Yes, some decisions take into account how they might affect ratings, because they have to think about getting the show renewed, but by and large writers work very hard to tell the stories that excite them personally.
I was hesitant on New Girl last year - but I saw the potential for it. I see no potential for this and I just see "Mindy" as looking like an annoying character (which to be fair, her character on the office was supposed to be and often worked because of that).
ReplyDeleteForgot to mention that a few people who have watched The Mindy Project have commented that the pilot is much better than what the promos show!
ReplyDeleteThey are indeed trying to seeling it a lot like a "New Girl type of show" but even as a huge fan of New Girl I don't feel it for now. I was sold to New Girl even before the pilot, so it's strange. But maybe I will be proven wrong!
ReplyDelete1.First of all, my favorite part of the show is brotherly love and I don't really enjoy monsters, horror or action on THIS show as much as brotherly love. I personally see it more as an emotional comedy rather than as a paranormal show. I understand the show in its true sense, unlike many 'horny' message board posters I met(not on this website). So, don't you tell me, I watch this show with an immature teenage mind, just because I wished for a hot actress to play a role in it. I am not going to miss anything if Bela is not in the show, but I am certainly 'enjoy' the show more if she is present.
ReplyDelete2. So, according to you, it's 'subjective' when it comes to Castiel and every Supernatural viewer, hates Bela, because she is a bad actress and writers are not capable of writing her story arc properly. And you say, only Castiel can give quality- drama. I accept Bela character is not that great, he but it is definitely better than Castiel's at any point of time on the show. And coming to quality, there is a better version of Supernatural in an alternate universe without Castiel, unnecessarily barging into the scenes. BTW, I wanna make it clear that I am not a shipper.
3.As you may have noticed from my comments, that I am not good at English, because I hail from India and English is not my Native language. I know a lot of fans in India who watch Supernatural, and not counted in the U.S. Nielsen ratings. Similarly there are hell lot of countries, who watch Supernatural and not counted in the ratings. Of course, foreign viewership of the show is even bigger than that of U.S. But unfortunately statistics are lacking. I can't tell you what the correct statistics are, but I can tell you Nielsen numbers are not exactly right. Their methods of counting are really questionable. When you look at message boards you may find predominantly females but, as far as I know, there are more male fans than female fans, who just watch the show and don't really bother to get active online. So, I still believe that Supernatural has more male viewers but has more noisy female viewers.
4.If you really think, Supernatural writers are not influenced by message boards comments and critics, then think again.
New Shows...Looking forward to Last Resort (ABC) and Infamous (NBC). Also interested (but skeptical) on ABC's 666 Park Avenue.
ReplyDeleteReturning Shows...Can't wait for Homeland, Fringe, and Revenge!
Okay, whatever. I am so bored of this debate. I have repeatedly said to you that I agree that the writers should do a better job of developing female characters. But you refuse to accept that we share an opinion in this.
ReplyDeleteYour only bone of contention seems to be that, as a man, your way of watching the show is better than the way women watch the show, and so much more mature, and you are being horribly discriminated against and seem hugely affronted by my suggestion that women are just as capable of being driven by something other than their libido as you are. You aren't willing to accept that not all female fans like Castiel or that writers make decisions that they believe serve the story, not the fans. You have one character that has appeared frequently on the show, who is male, who even though he is an anomaly and can't be taken as representative of any particular trend on the show, you are convinced is a sign of gender discrimination.
So there's really nothing more to discuss.
So I just watched the Mindy Project and there is nothing funny about this show.... Maybe they should consider writing a show which focuses on merely the guy doctors and leave Mindy Kaling out of it. She took her Office character and made her a doctor (which is unrealistic to begin with)...
ReplyDeleteDont wanna be mean but perhaps CW thought that casting Meryl Streep's daughter would guarantee viewers no matter how dumb the show was
ReplyDeleteI get your point, but they could get viewers if it were the actual Meryl Streep...I really don't see the logic of attracting viewers with her mostly unknown daughter. The broader audience might not even know she is her daughter with the different last name and all.
