Game of Thrones - Season 3 - Dominic West Turns Down Season 3 Role (Probably Mance Rayder)

McNulty on "Game of Thrones"? It almost happened, according to actor Dominic West.

On Wednesday, I interviewed West, who played the iconic cop Jimmy McNulty on "The Wire," about the second season of the period drama "The Hour," in which he plays newscaster Hector Madden. I asked what other kinds of roles he was interested in, and "Game of Thrones" came up in the conversation.

"I was offered something on 'Game of Thrones' and unfortunately, I hadn't seen it, but my nephew and his father said, 'Gosh, "Game of Thrones" is the only great show on!' And I felt terrible, because I'd just turned them down," West said.

So what part was West offered? He hasn't read the books, so the name didn't stick in his head. But he did say that taking the role -- a substantial one and similar in stature or importance to Sean Bean's Season 1 character Ned Stark, according to West -- would have involved being "in Reykjavik for six months." ("Game of Thrones" shoots the scenes set north of the Wall in Iceland.)

  1. This absolutely guts me!

He was the only fan favorite, big name actor left for the role of Mance. I am so sad HBO offered it to him and he turned them down! : (

  2. How big of a role was he up for? I haven't read the books yet...

  3. Totally agree, Dominic as Mance would've been epic.

  4. The assumed role was Mance Rayder "King Beyond the Wall". He is the de facto leader of the Wildlings and will be in many of the Jon Snow scenes next year. West would have been much of the focus of Season 3&4 beyond the wall along with Jon.

  5. Oh this is too bad! Granted i haven't read the books but i like him very much......Where has he been hiding not knowing about GOT?

  7. Thank you, but I am more of a rabid fan than an expert!

I've read most of the books 2 or 3 times (I'm in the middle of another re-read of the series actually), but those books are so large and there is so much detail that I cannot recall everything without the help of the internet.

4,000+ pages, almost 2,000 named characters.... way beyond my abilities of recall! XD

  8. So who is playing Mance?? Tell me HBO!!

  9. That would have been amazing, same it didn't happen.

  10. It's okay. Most of the people on here are boffins about something. I, for instance, am a huge history buff. And, I have been known to write a door-stopper about Fringe on occasion (DarthLocke4 is another Fringe fan, but she goes way further than even I do).

I like Game of Thrones (only watched season one though, fucking hate not having HBO), and I read A Song Of Ice And Fire (midway through A Clash Of Kings).

As good as the series is, I can't imagine it will end well. From my perspective (forgive my ignorance), it will turn into a bloated, sprawling Stephen King epic. If what I know is correct, some serious shit goes down in A Storm Of Swords (something to do with Joffrey's wedding), and LOTS of people are killed (Joffrey and Robb Stark included, and Tyrion kills his father Tywin (who did not shit gold)); and the last two books (A Feast For Crows and A Dance With Dragons) are really one long book about the aftermath.

The White Walkers haven't invaded yet, but I suspect that will be the turning point as the ending draws closer: the families will stop their petty squabbling and join together to fight the Walkers (something like Watchmen), and it becomes a war epic. The cast grows EVEN LARGER, many minor characters are killed off, some major characters die, and it has a bittersweet ending that divides the fanbase.

You are more knowledgeable in this area than I, so what do you think of my analysis? And how do you think the series will end?

  11. I keep thinking of reading it, but the series is to massive I procrastinate... I have started reading my first fantasy novel... "The Name of the Wind" by Patrick Rothfuss, it's really good...have you read it? I am thinking I'll go for Lord of the Rings next and then perhaps A song of fire and ice...

  12. You're just about right on! XD

At the end of Book 5 it is at its widest scope and fairly sprawling to be sure. It seems like from this point on all the character arcs an sub-plots should begin to merge as characters come together and everything builds towards the climax.

From what GRRM has let on, all the pieces are now in place and moving in the right directions so that he can begin moving to the endgame. I hope that is true because while I can handle slow moving plots and more character related plots about their inner turmoils (as the last two books were more so), I want the wide scope to narrow and events to move towards an endgame.

The last 2 books seemed a bit stagnant as far as advancing the major plot advancements, but to me they filled in the last of the needed exposition so now we can move on.

Personally I enjoyed A Dance With Dragons (the most recent book) quite a bit, but many found it slow and annoying I know.

  13. Cadence recommended it to me and other people have since too. I have it on my Kindle, but keep forgetting to read it...

I plan to read The Name of the Wind this Summer yet... Right now I'm in the midst of a Song of Ice and Fire re-read alternating with a Crime Fiction series by John Sandford.

I think ASOIAF makes for a pretty good read and you will like it. Some of the books are huge and if you do catch up by reading all the books that have been released so far you may have to wait a good while. The last 2 books in the series were not released for about 5 years (or more) after the previous released book. There are at least 2 more books planned in the series, but GRRM has added books to the series a few times before so I would not be shocked if there will be 3 more books personally.

  14. I can't really judge it as a fantasy series as I am new to it, but as a story, The Name of the Wind is pretty awesome... It's different than Game of Thrones in that it's not about kings and wars... It's about the life of one person, and the story of how a legend is born and how the reality is quite different from what you hear in stories... It's not unlike Forrest Gump in that respect although not exactly like that...

  15. This would've been absolutely perfect! Too bad really.

  16. I just read article from July 20 stating Dominic West will be starring in My Fair Lady this fall. So it seems like he must have turned down the role 2 weeks ago or more.

  18. You must read the books! They are amazing! But make sure you read the books before watching the series, because the books are even better than the series (and everybody knows how amazing the series are, so...).

  19. I would but lately i can't seem to pick up the book i have been reading since last Feb.! Usually i go through a book in two days,3 the most but lately, wow,i'm getting very lazy!

  20. Fine thanks, but working like crazy. Hope you are well and your back is not being much trouble :)
I really doubt you'd be able to stop reading GoT if you started. I, for instance, haven't begun reading the next book because I have too much work to do and I KNOW it would get in the way.

  21. I will definitely read them but i doubt i would be able to finish the first 3 before the new season starts even though its months away, not sure i could do it,we'll see i guess! Glad your well! ;)

  22. Bad move, the part of Mance Rayder would have made him international.
