Blake's 7 - Syfy working on reboot

Aug 22, 2012

As someone who grew up on Blake's 7 and loved it, not sure how I feel about a re-boot....

Anyone else remember the original?

Syfy is working on a U.S. version of classic UK sci-fi series Blake’s 7.
Created by Terry Nation (Dr. Who), Blake’s 7 followed a hard-core renegades and criminals who escape from a prison planet — battling humans and aliens alike – and became heroes. The show launched on BBC in 1978 and ran for four seasons. If greenlit, Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) will direct the script by Joe Pokaski (Heroes).

  1. Oh God! Syfy are going to ruin a cult show!!!!!!!

  2. I've never understood that argument.

One TV show can't ruin another and rebooting a program alters absolutely nothing about the original. As far as I know, creating a new version of an old TV show doesn't alter the past and wipe it from existence like Marty McFly in Back to the Future. It's still there and it's just as entertaining as it always was.

  3. I think Jan's fear comes from SyFy's poor history with reboots of any potential good space opera series for that matter. And I agree with that. But if they prove me wrong, then awesome!

  4. What Jan might have meant, is that this new reboot might possible tarnish the brand name associated with Blake's 7. Although it is impossible to retroactively alter the quality of a show without touching the source material, the perception of a premise can be affected on the mind's eye by a sub par adaptation, which for reason of being newer, becomes more easily edged in the colective consciousness.
Syfy has a bad reputation, so it is a likely scenario.

This is not including the backlash that it might incur in possible future incarnations and projects, which effectually would constitute ruin for a possible reinvigorated franchise.

  5. In the history of Syfy / The Sci-Fi Channel, they have rebooted only 2 space opera series - Battlestar Galactica & Flash Gordon. One was loved by fans and critics and one was an abject failure.

How is that a poor history?

  6. I don't buy into that idea. Not in this instance. Maybe with a higher-profile franchise I could buy this but not with some semi-obscure, older than dirt sci-fi show.

A 34 year old UK TV show that ran for 52 episodes and is relatively (if not completely) unknown to US viewers being rebooted for a US audience is not a big deal. If the show was being redone in the UK for a UK audience then an argument could be made.

  7. I loved Blakes 7, that and Space 1999 were some of the best shows of the late 70's!!!

Agreed. I'm seen some reboots of cult shows that I enjoyed and in fact made me at least take a look at the original. As a matter of fact if we want to talk about cult sci fi show reboots we should talk about one of the most successful: Star Trek. More than 20 years later the show was rebooted and it lead to 3 spin offs, 4 movies, and a bigger cult following.

  9. Relatively unknown? Yes.
    Completely unknown? Not at all.

It did air in the U.S. I know a fair number of people who have seen it. I enjoyed it a lot, but even a half-way decent reboot would be an improvement over the original which had lots of flaws. It would certainly have to be a Flash Gordon level failure to tarnish the original. I think it is worth the risk.

Considering the complete lack of sci-fi on the Syfy, I see this to be wonderful news.

I think that's a good way to look at it.
