NEW YORK – August 22, 2012 – Syfy will develop the cult UK classic adventure-sci-fi series Blake’s 7, teaming with Georgeville Television and producer Marc Rosen.
Martin Campbell (Casino Royale, Green Lantern) will direct the script by Joe Pokaski (Heroes, CSI).
Originally created by Terry Nation (Dr. Who), Blake’s 7 premiered on the BBC in 1978, running for four seasons (52 episodes). The series centered around hard-core renegades and criminals who escape from a prison planet, battling humans and aliens alike – and becoming heroes.
Isn't it strange to put out a press release for a project in development? It doesn't even have a pilot order or a series order yet, does it?
ReplyDeleteNot that I'm aware of.
ReplyDeleteIn the case of a cult TV show like Blake's 7, it's not as unusual. Kind of like when there were press releases about Netflix developing a new season of Arrested Development.
ReplyDeleteI loved Blake's 7, but I am leery of a remake. In the original, the hardened criminals didn't really become heroes they just ended up fighting a corrupt government because it served their own purposes. Plus the casting of the pivotal roles (Avon in particular) was really strong. So to be a success, the casting will have to be really good, IMHO.
ReplyDeleteIt could be interesting to see this done with special effects that actually had money spent on them. Although part of the charm was cheesy effects. I'll really have to see the finished product before I could know If I liked it.
That's different. That show already had a three year production with the same cast a few short years ago and Netflix was looking to make new episodes, not put something through the development process.
ReplyDeleteDoesn't strike me as unusual. I've been seeing these kinds of announcements in the trades for years. I've always suspected it's part water testing and part job posting...

ReplyDeleteNow that makes sense to me.
It is interesting. What would the remake in the 21st century would bring to this story which was created in the 20th?
