The Selection - CW boss wants a "Game of Thrones" tone

Jul 31, 2012

At the TCA the CW president mentioned The Selection, “I’m a big believer (in the concept)”, said Pedowitz. “The producers did a very good job, but it wasn’t where we wanted to be tone-wise, we wanted it to have a Hunger Games/'Game of Thrones'-type tone.” Elizabeth Craft and Sarah Fain, who wrote the original pilot, are back rewriting it.

  1. Pedowitz is high if they think there will ever be a cw show with GoT tone or any show on hbo for that matter

  2. Do Hunger Games & Game Of Thrones even have a similar tone?

  3. There won't be a show in any network with that tone. Not AT ALL.

  4. What makes me nuts is that these guys are so busy trying to copy everyone else's success that they'll never step out of the box and at least try to create something new. It's that attitude that allowed HBO churn out so many hits. HBO finds great material and rather than saying 'its not like other hits, change it to be more like that...they stick with it. I can't think of any network that has had a huge hit with a show that was created to be like someone else's hit.

  5. If we are going to be fair, a setting like THG with a GoT tone would be pretty awesome, if executed with care.

Now, the chances that CW manages to do it, are pretty slim.

  6. Well people can dream, no one can prevent them from dreaming about stuff they will never be able to achieve.

CW achieving even a miniscule bit of GoT quality? Sorry, not gonna happen. So far nothing in that channel could convince me that they could rite a material worth of 1 second scene of usual HBO faire.

  7. Better stick with the Hunger Games tone.Game of Thrones has this tone partly because HBO allows them to show things that the CW isn't allowed to even think about.
    I'll give this a chance,in any case.Could be good.

  8. Surely Huger games and Game of Thrones are very different tonally. I can not quite see what it is they are getting at here, adn maybe that is part of the problem! I can't say I was wowed by the concept anyway as it did sound too hunger games-y for me in the first place, but I would have thought that going along that route would be popular for their target audience?

  9. If this want to say that "The Selection" won't be other series about love and teens, It's great news... But NEVER a CW series will have the tone of a production of a channel like HBO. Nevertheless I think that Pedowitz is working and It's good.

  10. What to expect from a network president who goes out to say this: http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m80mx88xHc1qa0gy7o1_500.png What a pathetic network run by idiots.

  11. I have not seen The Hunger Games but I am willing to bet Game of Thrones and Hunger Games have really different tones... And there is no way you can bring the tone of Game of Thrones with the creative limitations of a network and also the budget a show will get on CW...

  12. In theory, it sounds like a good idea. It would be great to have a tv show revolving around the dark. gloomy tone that both THG and GoT possess. However, i can't imagine this doing well on the CW, even if it is amazing. The demographic of the CW is still hardly driven by young teens, and i don't see this changing anytime soon, despite Arrow and Cult looking good.

  13. It's highly unlikely that the CW would ever manage to get a GoT tone in one of their shows, but I like that they are at least trying to make a change in their schedule
