Supernatural - Ultimate Episode Round 1A - Polls

Jun 4, 2012

Woo hoo! The Ultimate Supernatural Episode Contest begins right now. We've voted for which 128 episodes made it into the contest and now we're ready to get started. Rules are simple - 1 vote per IP address. The episode with the most votes moves on to the next round. The episode that doesn't, doesn't. All polls end at 7PM St. Louis, USA time. Play nice. Have fun.

Below you will find some links that might be helpful as the contest begins. There is a list of episodes in ranked order. This list also tells what season each episode comes from. There's is also a link to the bracket system we are using. It was particularly helpful for me to print it out and track which episodes were going up against each other. May help any visual learners out there. Since this contest will take a few weeks to complete, I've also added a separate results page which I will try to update every day. This will make it easier to find information than trying to remember what day an episode was in a poll. Finally there is a page that has all the season 1 quote nomination forms. These nominations will help determine what quotes go into our Ultimate Supernatural Quote Contest later in the year. We are currently on The Usual Suspects and Crossroad Blues. If you have any questions about the contest, please leave your comments below. Also comments about why you voted for the episodes you did are always welcome.

So let's get to it. Happy voting!

  3. The Usual Suspects Quotes:

    17.  Dean:  "So I'm being extradited to St. Louis huh.  You just decided to transfer me yourself 800 miles at 2 in the morning.  This can't be good….Pee break so soon.  I think you might want to get your prostrate checked16.  Sheridan:  "There's a way out.  This Dean kid's a freaking gift.  We can pin the whole thing on him.  Okay no trial, nothing.  Just one more dead scumbag."  Dean:  "Hey!"15.  Dean:  "Could we make this quick?  I'm a little tired.  It's been a long day you know with your partner assaulting me and all."14.  Dean:  "By close you mean…"  Sam:  "30 minutes maybe."  Dean:  "Awesome.  So I guess I just get to uh hang out.  That's awesome."  Sam:  "Dude seriously."  Dean:  "Alright, I'm going to talk to Karen again.  See if she's knows anything about this Dana Shulps huh."  Sam:  "Great."  Dean:  "Keep going Sparky."13.  Ballard:  "How did you get those?  Those are from crime scenes and booking photos."  Sam:  "You have your job.  I have mine.  Here I need you to look through these.  Tell me if you recognize anyone."12.  Jeff:  "I hope that's meaningful but I'd like to discuss your case now."  Sam:  "Sure thing Matlock."  Jeff:  "You two really are brothers, aren't you?"11.  Dean:  "Hey, thanks for the law review Matlock, but you want to help me, I need you to see my brother."10.  Dean:  "Did he say what she looked like?"  Karen:  "What the hell difference does it make what she looked like?"  Dean:  "Uh, it's just that our company's very thorough."  9.  Sam:  "Dana Shulps.  What's that?  A name?"  Dean:  "I don't know but it's everywhere.  All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy."  Sam:  "Wow, I'd say we've officially crossed over into weird."8.  Sam:  "Well we've got to salt and burn her bones.  It's the only way to put her spirit to rest."  Ballard:  "Of course it is."7.  Dean:  "Man for some reason I could really go for some pea soup."6.  Sam:  "You know this is bothering me."  Ballard:  "Well you know you are digging up a corpse."  Sam:  "No, not that.  That's pretty par for the course actually."5.  Dean:  "So I'm thinking either somebody tampered with the tapes…"  Sam:  "Or it's an invisible killer."  Dean:  "My favorite kind.  What do you think Scully, you want to check it out?"  Sam:  "I'm not Scully.  You're Scully."  Dean:  "No, I'm Mulder.  You're a red-headed woman."4.  Dean:  "You know, Casper the Bloodthirsty Ghost."3.  Jeff:  "Do you understand how serious these charges are?"  Dean:  "I'm handcuffed to a table.  Yeah, I get it."  2.  Sam:  "I needed some time off to deal.  So I'm taking a road trip with my brother."  Ballard:  "And how's that going for you?"  Sam:  "Great.  I mean we saw the second largest ball of twine in the continental US.  Awesome."  1.  Dean:  "My name is Dean Winchester.  I'm an Aquarius.  I enjoy sunsets, long walks on the beach, and frisky women.  And I did not kill anyone but I know who did.  Or rather what did.  Of course I can't be for sure since our investigation was interrupted, but our working theory is that we're looking for some kind of vengeful spirit."

  4. So glad to hear it and thanks for telling us what you chose.  Except for Heart, I think I'm going to end up voting the same way.

  5. Poll #1: Hmm, let me see. The second/third best S7 episode vs. the worst. How will I vote?

Poll #2: Heart, easy. It was a very emotional episode tha looked into Sams situation with great parallels.

Poll #3: Frontierland, again a very easy vote. A very fun episode that also tied into the mytharc.

Poll #4: Home. It FINALLY got the ball rolling on SPNs mytharc, and the "Im sorry" foreshadowing line was amazing. Hated missourri though. I still long to kill her with a wiffle bat.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Bwah!  You always make me laugh.  I'm less into physically killing myself, but I have a great longing for one of Missouri's clients to find out she has been lying to them and for them to take her out.  Either that or flambeed by a poltergeist.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Haha, I love how you state youre not into physical killing, then two lines later you wish she gets flambeed...well done!

    ReplyDelete
  8. With the exception of Death's Door, every episode I vote for today will most likely lose.  It's going to be that kind of contest for me.

    1.  Death's Door - no explanation needed

    2.  Bloody Mary - This episode is one of the scariest in all of Supernatural.  I miss scary.  Heart was good but it falls in the overly dramatic emoangsting category for me and that category almost always loses to action or scary for me.

    3.  Bedtime Stories - not only am I a sucker for fractured fairy tales, but Frontierland ties for THE suckiest ending of any SPN episode.  Yes, it ties with Bugs.  That's saying a lot.

    4.  Hunted - I'll take Gordon over Missouri any day.  Missouri is still my absolute least favorite one-shot PiP of all time on any show.  Real shame because the first 10 minutes of Home rocked my world.

    ReplyDelete
  9. You mistake me.  I'm all for Missouri being physically killed.  I just don't want the gore and mess of doing it myself.  I get squicked easily with that stuff.  I'd rather read about her death in the paper.  :-P

    ReplyDelete
  10. Well, at least Frontierland's ending didnt start a ridiculous sub plot that created strife and ruined otherwise brilliant episodes *cough*Amy*cough*. Besides that, I agree.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Believe me The Girl Next Door is in its own category.  It wins hands down for Most Toxic Episode.  It was the poison that kept on spreading and even now the mere thought of it can make people feel queasy.  Let's just call that episode the stomach virus of Supernatural.

  13. Death's Door - Well, this episode wins when put against *almost* anything else, but it's kind of funny because it is, in a sense, the first half of a two-parter that concludes, mostly unsatisfactory, with Adventures in Babysitting. I liked AiB when it first aired, but was disappointed with what we were shown as the aftermath of Bobby's Death. In any case, Death's Door wins this contest easy, and I have a feeling it will make it very far in this contest, maybe even to the quarter-finals ;)

Heart - The first time I saw this episode I did not like it. Well, that's not true. I liked it well enough, but was bored. It is mostly stand-alone, and quite different tonally then the episodes preceeding it. After watching it again though, with my many, many, MANY series re-watches, I've come to love it and it's among my favorite season 2 episodes. I think Heart shows some of the most care of Sam, from Dean, and I love that aspect of it more than anything else. The episode is all about Sam, but the way Dean is used makes my heart swell. And no moment or scene in Supernatural has ever made me ugly cry like the final scene in this episode. And it gets me every time.  As for it's competition, Bloody Mary? Decent, and creepy, but it can't hold a candle to Heart, IMO.

Frontierland - Shallow, but Jensen can work the western gear. He needs to do a western once SPN finishes. This is probably my favorite season 6 episode. I thought the opening scene in Samuel's hideout to be hilarious with Dean's Star Trek IV comments (LOVE THAT LINE) and him telling Sam to get his own Colt journal. Oh the LULZ! It's silly, the overall concept, but the execution was perfect and I thoroughly enjoy watching this one over and over again. I do like Bedtime Stories, but Frontierland is overall a better episode.

Home - this is one of my favorites from season 1. I enjoyed Missouri as a character and I really liked the actors cast as the family in the old Winchester home. I go back to this one a lot when I need an early-Winchester fix that also has brotherly emo and dad angst. It delivers on all fronts. I also liked seeing a bit of frightened vulnerability from Dean in this one. Home is when he first learns about Sam's nightmare visions, and it's easy to see he's scared to death. Not only of that but of returning to the place where his whole life changed forever. I can understand his reluctance to return!  As for Hunted..it's good, and it's nice to have Gordon back, but I'm usually not the biggest fan of the episodes when Sam and Dean are separated. Though I did enjoy Ava quite a bit. I thought she was hilarious.  But Home wins for me, because it's like a comfort episode if that makes any sense.

  14. Thanks for sharing your choices.  I think Death's Door is going to be the big winner by a landslide.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I find it fascinating how we can have so many similar tastes in our top favorites of the show, yet still our votes diverge so greatly in some of these polls! Though with 149 episodes there's bound to be divergence :D

I can admit the end of Frontierland is bogus lamesauce...but all the stuff before it more than makes up for it; for me anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Frontierland won't need my vote.  I have it winning next round too.  In all honesty, while the sucks to the max ending did the episode in for me, I'm not as gung ho about the whole episode as most people.  I find the phoenix story line more lame every time I watch it and the message is confusing to say the least.  I much prefer what they did with the ashes to the brothers getting them.  However, Frontierland scores major big points for having a happy Dean.  I get warm fuzzies whenever I see either brother happy, especially since it happens far too rarely.  Unless my prognostication of poll events is way off, I will definitely be voting for Frontierland in its next round.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Ha!  You're right.  We couldn't be more different in this poll.  Looking at your reasons, I think we are going to be voting differently until the sweet 16 when clear favorites will emerge.  Home hits my Worst of SPN list.  Admittedly if it didn't have Missouri and it was only the brothers fighting the poltergeist, it might have been in my top list instead.  That woman just irks me to no end.  When I'm walking to this episode, I actually flip on cable and watch the commercials to avoid Missouri scenes.

Death's Door, Swan Song, Born-Again Identity, Survival of the Fittest, and Born Under a Bad Sign were my biggest gambles in my predictions.  If they don't go like I think they will, my predictions are done for.  I have Death's Door making it to the Elite 8 and then falling out of the contest.  If I'm wrong than chances are it takes the whole thing.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Death's Door, Heart, Frontierland, and Home.

All easy except it was a tough choice between Bloody Mary and Heart. So much so I'm iffy about the one I chose. I keep going back and forth. I found Heart heartbreaking with its ending, but Bloody Mary's ending was amazing too. They're both great Sam focused episodes.

I remember replaying the scene of Sam seeing Jessica on the sidewalk a dozen times the first time I saw season 1 on DVD (my first time watching it since I missed season 1 when it first aired). The section of music they chose was great in the scene. I don't like that whole song, but that part is really good.

(I find it weird how sometimes I like a part of a song but not the whole. Am I the only one who this happens to?)

    ReplyDelete
  19. I didn't mind Missouri. She made me laugh. And she tried knocking some sense into John.

    ReplyDelete
  20. In all fairness, I wasn't a John fan in this episode too.  In fact, this is the episode where I started disliking John and it grew to loathing in Faith.  I shrieked when John died and then did my happy dance.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Not at all.  There are often bits in songs that I find intriguing or a hook when I can't stand the song as a whole.  This is especially with music now and in the 70's when the tone of the song can be quite different in parts.

    ReplyDelete
  22. well...yeah...I can kind of agree with you. I guess I tend to ignore ALL the plot stuff of Frontierland and just get all fangirl over Dean in the cowboy hat (shame on me...kind of).  And yes, a happy Dean is a rare sight and one to relish (which is why Plucky's gets a pass from me, too).

    ReplyDelete
  23. I've not met a character yet in Supernatural that irks me as much as you say Missouri irks you...thank goodness! That would make things hard, and I feel bad that such a good episode was ruined for you because you didn't like her.

I'm fascinated by the close race that is Heart and Bloody Mary. Very interesting! I'm good if either wins...but it's so close!

Oh this is going to be so much fun! lol - and in light of this ongoing poll I've decided to attempt to actually write down my personal episode rankings...because I feel like I might soon start to contradict myself in polls if I don't keep clear-headed. And because I've never done it and it could be a good exercise as well as something to pass the summer...
If your gambles were that they would win all their competitions - well I think you're likely right. The only one I could see *maybe* not making it would be Swan Song. Although maybe time makes the heart grow fonder. I seem to remember reading a lot of angry reactions to that episode. I thought it was flawless, but...we'll see!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Some need to win, some need to lose in order for my predictions to go well.  They will each face an opponent where I think the results can go either way.  That's why they are gambles for me.

I'm so glad you are creating your own personal best of list.  I have piece mealed mine a few times, but this summer I am going to actually rank them.  Right now all the middle ones are lumped in together.  Of course the beauty of a list like this is that it is always fluid depending on the situation I'm in.

  25. I don't think there's any doubt here.
    Death's Door wins hands down.
Know-it-all teens are just always so annoying to me.
    X
I have to go with Heart.
While I liked Bloody Mary, I just prefer Heart.
    X
I'm torn here too, as I liked both these episodes but I'm going to give it to Bedtime Stories as I know that Frontierland will win anyway. Apart from the time-travel ( which I loved ) and the cute cowboy costumes, there wasn't really much else to the story.
Yeah to Sammy in BS for shooting the Crossroads Demon and I liked the idea of the fairytales.
    SPN did it first OUAT!
    X
    Hunted, all the way.
I just love this episode and the ending was epic. I know the Nightshifter ending is always held up as the best but I prefer this.
Gordon coming out shooting just to find the cops turning up to arrrest him while the brothers chuckle in the bushes is just wonderful.

Just in passing, I want to say this ep is one of the reasons I don't like watching the extras or the gag reel.
Everytime I watch the scene where Dean is tied to the chair with that thick cord, I keep seeing the clip in the gag reel where Jensen pulls it easily away and makes a funny commment. I know it's ridiculous but that spoils my appreciation for what is a very tense scene in the episode.

    ReplyDelete
  26. SPN did it better OUaT - no annoying Henry and Emma.

Nice to see some love for Hunted.  I thought Gordon was very intriguing.  A more complex character than we usually get and an impossible puzzle for the brothers.  They couldn't show the Winchesters murdering a human and yet they couldn't let Gordon kill Sam.  Quite the predicament and one that was much better resolved in this episode than in Fresh Blood.

    ReplyDelete
  27.  While your answer came up I was adding an edit to my post and as you can see I'm amazed that Home could win over Hunted.

I can only think that some voters are annoyed that Sam went off and left Dean alone at the beginning of the episode and vote accordingly, or that there are a lot of John fans who were glad to see him in Home, because otherwise I can't fathom why such a great action-packed ep such as Hunted is losing.

Do you who are into the "secrets" of the episodes have an explanation?. Just curious.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Death's door - one of the most solid episodes overall;
    Bloody Mary - back in the times when the show was scary, and this one is the scariest for me;
Frontierland - just liked it more, although the ending kind of reminded me Back to the Future where also there is a letter delivered from the past and for that i don't mind it too much as a "too easy way to resolve everything" ;)
Hunted - while Home was OK and even Missouri was not too annoying, i prefer in this case Hunted.

    ReplyDelete
  29. The Usual Suspects

I loved this episode and it gave us a look at how the brothers don't have to be together to communicate with one another. They already have things planned out in case they get separated or into trouble.
The first quote is a classic,as is the second. :)
    X
    X

Dean: My name is Dean Winchester. I'm an Aquarius. I enjoy
sunsets, long walks on the beach, and frisky women. And I did not kill
anyone. But I know who did. Or rather what did. Of course it can't be
for sure, because our investigation was interrupted. But our working
theory was that we're looking for some kind of vengeful spirit.
    X
Dean: My favorite kind. What do you think, Scully? You wanna check it out?

Sam: I'm not Scully, you're Scully.
    Dean: No, I'm Mulder. You're a red-headed woman.
    XX
    Crossroad Blues
    X

For me this is one of the most powerful, prophetic and overall best episodes of SPN.
Watching it now is just so heart-breaking as we know what will happen.
Dean will do exactly what he criticises others for doing in the episode and will be ripped to shreds by Hell-hounds as the persons here were.
The scenes between the cross-roads demon and Dean are just so good as was the whole episode.
    X
I love all these earlier seasons also because the time dedicated to each brother was more or less equal and the episodes were all well-balanced, something which has not been so in the later seasons when Sam has been pushed to the side at times leaving the viewer unsatisfied with the brotherly balance.
    X

    Crossroad Blues.
    Dean: (to Evan Hudson)
You sure about that? I think you did it for yourself. So you wouldn't
have to live without her. But guess what? She's going to have to live
without you now. But what if she knew how much it cost? What if she knew
it cost your soul? How do you think she'd feel?
    X
Dean: [kissing the Crossroads Demon] What the hell was that for?

    Crossroads Demon: Sealing the deal.

Dean: I usually like to be warned before I'm violated with Demon tongue.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Death's Door - no contest.

Bloody Mary - One of the scariest episodes of the show.Bloody Mary was creepy and cool!Heart,on the other hand,I have a few issues with. It's not that I didn't like it,I did,it was probably one of the saddest episodes of Supernatural and the acting was amazing. It's just that I thought the whole thing was a little over the top.Even Sam's reaction. He met Madison and fell in love with her in 48 hours!?I can think of a few people along the years that he knew longer and better and their deaths didn't cause all that drama.

Frontierland - Shame that Bedtime Stories had to go up against it.It's also an amazing episode.

Hunted - Even though I'm pretty sure it'll lose.Great episode!Loved Sam's scenes with Ava!Come to think of it,apart from Jake,I really liked all the psychic kids.Home had an awesome beginning and a very touching ending. Not really impressed with what happened in between.

    Quotes

    The Usual Suspects:
    - Jeff: "I'm with the public defenders office.I'm your lawyer."
      Dean: "Oh,thank God.I'm saved."

    - Sam: "Well,we've got to salt and burn her bones. It's the only way to put her spirit to rest."
      Ballard: "Of course it is."

    Crossroad Blues:
    - Dean: "You know,I usually like to be warned before I'm violated with demon tongue."

    - Dean: "We know a little about a lot of things.Just enough to make us dangerous."

  31. for me ..hunted and home are my top favorites episode for that season because the story line execution was perfect

    ReplyDelete
  32. Death's Door - not a particular fan, but still undeniably better than Adventures in Babysitting.

Bloody Mary - it still scares the hell out of me, after all these years. One of the best standalone Supernatural horror episodes.

Bedtime Stories - because I thought Frontierland was a wasted potential, especially Samuel Colt.

Hunted - just because I think it's better. No particular likes or dislikes about any of the episodes.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I've just realized I voted the same as you this time. Doesn't happen too often.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Home came after Bugs, remember. That factored into my enjoyment of that episode.

    ReplyDelete
  35.  I never thought of that, coming after Bugs, I mean. :)

However I suppose the enjoyment of an episode is a very personal experience and there are lots of reasons that one prefers an episode to another.
I have never had any problem with Bugs other than the stupidly short night that they had at the end. For the rest I quite enjoyed the cursed ground story and as I find insects creepy but not my worst fear, I liked Bugs well enough.

Don't get me wrong I enjoyed Home too.
It was such a surprise to see Mary's ghost and the thing in the little girl's cupboard was pretty scary. I even quite liked Missouri, and John's entrance at the end was a big surprise too.

Overall though, I just like Hunted better.
I love Gordon Walker as the antagonist, and the dialogue between him and Dean as they were waiting for Sam to arrive was good.
We got to see Ava and find out that her mum is still alive and not burned on the ceiling as Dean's was.
Then there's Dean beating up Gordon for trying to hurt Sam, something we don't get any more so I appreciate it here even more.

They're both good episodes but I thought they would have been closer result-wise, as I don't get why Hunted should be so far behind.

  36. Death's Door,
    Heart,
    Frontierland, and
    Home

Dean:  "My name is Dean Winchester.  I'm an Aquarius.  I enjoy sunsets, long walks on the beach, and frisky women.  And I did not kill anyone but I know who did.  Or rather what did.  Of course I can't be for sure since our investigation was interrupted, but our working theory is that we're looking for some kind of vengeful spirit."

Dean:  "Man for some reason I could really go for some pea soup."

Dean:  "Yeah, My Space.  What the hell is that?  Seriously, is that like some sort of porn site?"

  37. 1. I voted for Deaths door . It was a good episode.. and we finally saw who Bobby was and why..
    2. I'd go with Bloody Mary instead of Heart.. BM was really scary for me.. as i myself have a phobia for mirrors.. Heart was good.. but too emo ..
    3. Frontier land it is.. ---Bedtime stories was a good Supernatural play at the fairy tales but Frontierland is one of my fav episodes... I love geeky Dean in a cowboy/sheriff gear.. just too entertaining..
    4. Home-- this was the first time Dean opened up about the incident that changed his life.. loved how he was scared to go back to the house.. how he asked his Dad to help him.. and Mary.. i love it whenever Mary makes an appearance..

  38. hard choice between heart and bloody mary both great sam episodes

    ReplyDelete
  39. Wow!  Now that is different.  We've been doing this for 3 years now and rarely have we ever voted the exact same way.  Too bad we are bound to be disappointed when the poll ends.

    ReplyDelete
  40. ..HOME   i am not surprise this episode was a cliffhanger one very specific and powerful story line

    ReplyDelete
  41. I think it is more a factor of 2 things.  One, Home is the second real mytharc story and like many good episodes it because even more important to that mytharc  after you get farther in the series.  Mary's "I'm sorry" turns it into an important episode.  The fact that Dean learns about Sam's visions also turns it into a bigger episode than just the story itself.  Plus you get a lot of background on how Mary's death affected them immediately afterwards.  It's a bigger glimpse into the Winchester family histoy.

The second reason is that emotional episodes do very well in these polls.  That's why my choices rarely win.  Home from Dean's response to going home to the phone call to Mary to John appearing at the end is all about emotion.  Generally here the emo episode trumps the action one every time.

  43. Hi!  Welcome to SpoilerTV.  Thanks so much for sharing your opinions.  Bloody Mary often seems to be people's scariest show.  For me that's Asylum, but Bloody Mary is pretty high on my list too.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Dean with the Crossroads Demon was hypnotic.  The actress did a great job of being menacing and ruthless while at the same time you could feel her attraction to the Winchesters.  By far my favorite Crossroads Demon although they were all pretty good.  I agree that Crossroad Blues was an awesome episode.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I'm glad I'm not the only one who has issues with the great tragic love story of Sam and Madison theory.  She was a fling that Sam wanted to save because she reminded him of himself.  I really believe that the emotional fall out was not about Madison at all.  It was about the fact that she didn't want to become a monster and the monster side took over anyway.  For me this episode comes down to Sam getting laid and confronting his fears about turning into a monster himself.  The two of which had nothing to do with Sam having any strong feelings for Madison.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Yikes!  That had to be a hard poll for you to vote in then.  My first major problem voting because I like both episodes will be Abandon All Hope vs The Kids are Alright.

    ReplyDelete
  47. When you look at the whole picture, there are surprisingly very few "horror" episodes for a show called Supernatural, especially in later seasons.  I would like to see them bring back the scary in season 8.  I agree that Bloody Mary was a top notch horror episode.  I hope we get more like that.  I also agree that Samuel Colt was criminally underused in Frontierland.

  48. Getting a glimpse into Bobby's past (and of course Rufus) made the episode for me.  I never really thought about Bobby's childhood and to see him shoot his father was one of the biggest shockers of the whole season for me.

My phobia is spiders so I can understand why Bloody Mary was especially scary for you.  I still refuse to watch the spider scenes in Bugs.

  49. I have a feeling things will get tougher as the polls continue.  This third and fourth rounds tend to be particularly painful for me because we've gotten rid of the middling episodes.  By then I'm usually passionate one way or another about what is left.

  50. Dean's interview quote is the most nominated for Usual Suspects.  Classic SPN moment.  Classic Dean moment.

  52. When I was voting, Bloody Mary was winning by a few votes, so here's hoping at least this one makes it through.

  53. Rewatching Hunted right now for quote nominations tonight.  Man do I love Ava in this episode.  She makes me roll with laughter.  Great episode!

  54. Death's Door, Bloody Mary, Bedtime Stories, Hunted.

    Quotes:

    The Usual Suspects:
Dean: "My name is Dean Winchester. I'm an Aquarius. I enjoy sunsets,
long walks on the beach, and frisky women. And I did not kill anyone
but I know who did. Or rather what did. Of course I can't be for sure
since our investigation was interrupted, but our working theory is that
we're looking for some kind of vengeful spirit."

Sam: "I needed some time off to deal. So I'm taking a road trip with
my brother." Ballard: "And how's that going for you?" Sam: "Great.
I mean we saw the second largest ball of twine in the continental US. Awesome."

    Crossroad Blues:

Dean: "What the hell was that for?" Demon: "Sealing a deal." Dean: "I usually like to be warned before I'm violated with demon tongue."

Sam: "So much for out low profile. You've got a warrant in St. Louis
and now you're officially in the Feds database." Dean: "Dude I'm like
    Dillinger or something."

  55. Sam had some exceptionally awesome lines if the middle of season 2.  Much more snarky than season 1.  I love that.  The ball of twine one always gets me, as does the Schoolhouse Rock line in Croatoan.  That one is on my list of best Sam lines.

  56. No, I like John, but I like it when any character gives any other character a talking to when they need it.

I miss John. I always get a little sad when I reach season 2. Yes, he was a messed up guy. Yes, he didn't put what his kids wanted first. He was too protective, and also too obsessed with revenge. But he never physically abused them like the guy's father did in Nightmare (Sam said so). Mary meant a lot to him, and he lost her, plus he realized the world was a lot scarier than he'd imagined.

I think John was just one of those lost souls. He was blind to any other options after Mary's death then to raise Sam and Dean as he did.

And I can understand why John wouldn't want them helping take down Azazel.

Bobby disagreed with what John did, I do too, but people react in different ways to events in their lives.

John could have drank himself away or committed suicide, but he didn't. He fought evil instead. He was messed up, but he was a hero. All those lives he saved. It was costly to the boys youths, yes, but he saw no other way. He could have done worst. At least he kept them in school the best he could. And I think the only reason he didn't want Sam to go to college is the fear that without him around he couldn't protect him.

As for later in life, with the fact Sam and Dean were vessels, things wouldn't have been normal for them after Sam turned 23. Sam would have died, and somebody would have sold their soul as soon as they figured out how, either Dean or John. And I'm sure Dean would voluntarily hunt Yellow Eyes whether John wanted to or not after Sam's disappearance/death. If not, I'm sure the involvement of demons and angels both wanting an Apocalypse was going to bring the brothers smack in the middle eventually and they would have found a way to get Dean in Hell. The only reason the Winchesters have escaped some of their "destinies" is their knowledge John and Bobby gave them and experience.

When I think of how young John was before Mary's death, it just makes me very sad. He was so sweet in his youth, and even that was after having gone to war! (In The Beginning, he had just returned from Vietnam, which was a pretty nasty war).

  57. Yep I find that a lot with the 70's songs because they vary so much.

  58. Oh that's interesting about Bloody Mary and Heart - it does make it more fun, when the voting is that close...

Yeah - my goal is to rank the episodes first by season, then attempt to merge the seasons into one overall list. I truly think the middle/average episodes are the hardest to "rank", so it should be interesting and challenging to say the least.

  59. I love this.
And I agree with this. I also liked John, flawed as he was.
