Day 3 was the toughest so far. Three polls ran neck and neck the entire time. Ghostfacers, Malleus Maleficarum, and The Kids are Alright won easily but Jump the Shark defeated Exile on Main St. by only 7 votes. Similarly, Sex and Violence beat Playthings by a mere 5 votes and Family Remains defeated Adventures in Babysitting by 17. This actually gives all three losing episodes a good chance of making it into the contests's last three spots. However, I expect today's polls to end up similarly close so who knows.
This is the last of the wild card polls so tomorrow we start the actual contest. I think voting will start off easy and get progressively harder. There are so many excellent episodes, choosing just one to crown as the Ultimate Supernatural Episode should be interesting. Please remember to pass the word. In an interesting turn of events, every single poll has exactly 1 episode on my worst of SPN list. Voting has never been easier. Doesn't matter how I feel about the other episode, so this is the list of which episodes I voted AGAINST
1. The Girl Next Door - This episode is in a class all by itself. I think it's label should be Most Toxic, in that it infected all the episodes around it. As an episode itself it was meh, but when you consider the long-term effects of the highly irritating Amy subplot it is sooooo much worse. Where's an angel mind wipe when you need one.
2. Season 7, Time for a Wedding - In all honesty it was better than I thought it would be. Of course I expected it to be hands down the worst episode in the entire SPN run. It turned out merely bad.
3. The Third Man - And we're walking, and we're walking, and there's a frog, and we're walking, and we're going to torture a kid before walking......This episode commits the biggest of all Supernatural sins for me. It was utterly boring.
4. Defending Your Life - Great concept, lousy writing. Not only did this episode make both brothers look like morons (Sam especially) but not one damn thing was resolved in an episode all about guilt. You would think Dean would learn to release some guilt he carried and progress through the rest of the season in a better frame of mind. Nope! This episode was completely useless and since it had potential, it makes it even worse.
5. Unforgiven - Ah, the other matching piece to Mannequin 3 in the Season 6 UGH! set. Both were filler. Both made me roll my eyes. Both were utterly forgettable.
6. Red Sky at Morning - This was actually my hardest choice because Slice Girls had way too many shades of Amy for my taste. However the plot line of Red Sky at Morning was utterly ridiculous so that gave it the nudge. Besides, Kripke apologized for this episode so no much more to say. I did like the brothers in tuxes though so if this one makes it in I won't be aghast.
Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, because Girl Next Door sucked. Two and a Half Men, because Time for a Wedding was squicky. The Third Man, because CAS! Being sassy and soldier-like. Defending Your Life because JO! Let It Bleed because ugh so many feels. Red Sky at Morning because BELA!

Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid - Not only is this a good episode, but it's up against The Girl Next Door which was not so good. In Dead Men we got to learn more about Bobby, which I loved. Jim Beaver can certainly bring the emotional moments when needed. It's also in this one that we begin to see the evidence of Dean starting to succumb to the "Michael-vessel" pressure.
Two and Half Men - anything automatically wins over Season 7, Time for a Wedding, as that episode is in my bottom five for sure. But Two and Half Men was cute. I enjoyed seeing Sam and Dean (especially Dean) with the baby(s). Jensen looks hot as hell with a baby. Sorry, I went there. But it's true. I think this was also the "official" intro of the Alpha's storyline?
Hollywood Babylon - Dean as a dedicated P.A.! Dean eating tons of junk food! Is there any other reason to not vote for this one? It's a toss-away in season 2, but fun. It had some fun, meta-moments, that weren't so on the nose as later episodes. I just like it. As for The Third Man...meeting Balthazar is the best part of that episode. :-\
Out With the Old - This episode aired tonight on The CW, and watching it again it's really a solid story. Not exceptional, not bad. It's certainly better than Defending Your Life. I also really like the last scene with the guys as they are leaving town with the trailer in tow and Dean mentions putting on a soft-rock station for Sam to fall asleep too. That was certainly an "awwwww" moment, one of very few this season.
Let It Bleed - I really like this episode. Probably because I like Lisa and Ben. It's in an odd place in the season though, just before the finale, which likely doesn't lend itself to being liked by many. I can't help but be drawn in by Dean's single-minded mission to save Lisa and Ben and the beginning, when Ben calls Dean about the intruders and then Crowley picks up the phone. Whoa. I love that sequence. Even though I kind of hate the end, with Cas wiping their memories, there's no other way they could be written off and be considered safe. Though just because they don't remember Dean doesn't mean they still couldn't be used against Dean. But I'll chose to ignore that plothole. I still kind of wish for more closure for Dean on the subject of Lisa and Ben but I don't think that'll ever happen.
The Slice Girls - I don't hate this episode. I don't love it. I like it. I'll watch it again and again with no complaints. It's just there. And the monsters got away, which means we could see them again, which I find awesome. It's nice to know there are "familiar" monsters out there (Alpha vamp included). Red Sky at Morning is one of the weaker episodes in season 3, and while I don't hate it as much as others, it's not one I look forward to watching necessarily. Though I do find Gert's hitting on Sam to be pretty hilarious.

I'm just bummed Jensen got such a crap episode for his second directorial effort (Girl Next Door). Hopefully his episode in season 8 is better, script-wise.
The brothers in tuxes was the most redeeming quality of Red Sky.
I vote for the Girl Next Door simply because I love wee Sam and Colin Ford.
I find the other episode to be a meh one. For a start, I don't like zombie stories. The only positive for me was that we got the Jodie Mills character and the big siege to Bobby's closet I didn't like the way that Bobby was so quick to turn against his "surrogate sons" when he had his wife to defend. It's understandable but I didn't like it.
I voted for Two and a Half Men just for the sheer pleasure of seeing the brothers working their first case together. We get our first notions about the Alphas and Dean's line in the supermarket to the old lady about handing over the baby was priceless. There was also a nice moment between the brothers in the motel room.Then I always like Dean's snarkiness with the eerie Campbell family. The other episode is best forgotten.
I vote for The Third Man as I didn't like Hollywood Babylon; a bit boring and too meta for my taste. In TTM, we get the dubious pleasure of seeing Castiel again but in compensation we get to meet the amoral Balthazar. The rest of the episode was nothing special but I'm still on a roll with seeing the brothers working together again.
I vote for Unforgiven. I liked that we got to see something of what Sam had gone through when he was soulless. It left me wanting to know more. Pity that they didn't go back to it in season seven instead of giving us stuff like Time for A Wedding.
Let it Bleed was okay too; the whole Lovecraft thing was good And although I have nothing against Ben and Lisa, I just didn't feel that it was the moment to bring them back into the story-arc.
I am probably one of the few who like Red Sky At Morning. It had some good brotherly moments and Dean practically fainting when he sees the Impala gone was hilarious. The only part I didn't like was Gert and while I can understand her crush on Sam, it was rather creepy. Then the boys in Tuxedos. Just wow! Also I liked Bela. I thought she was interesting and was capable of giving the Winchesters a run for their money.
Ah yes, I probably should have done it the traditional way. I realize I came off sounding incredibly negative by this approach. So here goes:
1. Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid - love that we learn more about Bobby's life. Plus we get Sheriff Jody Mills, always a bonus. I thought the story was heartbreaking and interesting. One of the best episodes in this.
2. 2.5 Men - we got alphas and Winchesters with babies. I thought the idea of monster babies to be interesting. How do you deal with that?
3. Hollywood Babylon - I really enjoyed this story, mostly for the humor and because Dean was actually happy. It's rare that either brother finds joy in something and those are always high moments for me.
4. Out with the Old - isn't Defending Your Life. That's enough for me.
5. Let It Bleed - rocked! I was a huge fan of this episode except for the torture scene in the middle and the last 10 minutes. I thought Possessed Lisa was a lot of fun and it was sad to see Ben carrying that gun despite Dean trying to shield him from the hunting life. Plus it has lots of Crowley and that always means fun.
6. Don't care which one wins this one although I voted Slice Girls.
Ha! Totally agree regarding the scene in Red Sky with Dean and the missing Impala. That was one of the best Dean/Impala moments in the whole series. He really loves his car (as he should, she's a beaut!). ;)
I totally forgot that Sheriff Mills was introduced in Dead Men...hope she's around in s8!I'm glad to see someone else who liked Let it Bleed! The sight of Ben with the gun was pretty tragic. That episode in general was a heartbreaker. Why don't you like the torture scene? Is there a specific reason or just generally it's not something you like to see? I thought it showed how far Dean was willing to let himself go in order to save Lisa and Ben, as horrifying as it probably was for him.
Yes, the scene was cute and Sam consoling him was too :) Bad Bela making Dean suffer!
I've always enjoyed that episode and I often wonder just why it isn't more appreciated, for although the ghost story might not have been of the best, it certainly isn't any worse than the plot-lines in other episodes that are considered excellent.

Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid - Far better than "The Girl Next Door" which I didn't like at all. Two and a Half Men - Not because I loved the episode but because the other option, "Season 7, Time For A Wedding" was a disaster which I never want to see again. Hollywood Babylon - It was a fun episode. Poking fun of Hollywood horror flicks? Count me in! Out With The Old - Unlike "Defending Your Life", it actually advanced the mytharc instead of showing Dean sinking into depression. Red Sky at Morning - It had Bela in it who was really fun to have around even though the premise of the episode was rather weak. "The Slice Girls" on the other hand is another episode which I won't be watching again anytime soon. (It's funny now that I look at it that how many episodes from Season 6 & 7 I'm not that keen to watch again.)
75% is pretty high. :) I could probably think of episodes that I have liked less percentage-wise but still enjoyed, eg., Clap your hands if you Believe.
I would say I liked it 50/50. I loved all the brotherly stufff, Dean trying to make Soulless Sam understand the ins and outs of emotion and brotherly caring, and I hated the fairy part but I watch it happily just the same.
Bloodlust. This is in my top-ten introductions to an episode, episode which is one of my favourites too.
The first quote came at such a wonderful carefree moment for the brothers and the Dean and the Impala getting a room quote doesn't even seem so outlandish :)

CSPWDT is not one of my favourites. Zombies again! But there are some nice brotherly moments and some great quotes. I was going to pick the "we've come to hug," but I went with the more angsty ones.
Dean: Sam. You and Dad... you're the most important people in my life. And now... I never should have come back, Sam. It wasn't natural. And now look what's come of it. I was dead. And I should have stayed dead. You wanted to know how I was feeling. Well, that's it.
So tell me. What could you possibly say to make that all right?
Sam: We've already lost dad. We've lost mom. I've lost Jessica. And now I'm gonna lose you, too?

1. No vote. The Girl Next Door gave us the pointless and terrible Amy storyline, so I could vote against it, only I don't even remember Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid. It was completely forgettable for me.
2. Two and a Half Man - I liked the boys with the baby and the baby monster storyline. Also, wasn't it the episode, where we first found out about the alphas? Plus the other episode was pretty bad. Not completely awful, but bad enough to vote against it.
3. I actually liked both episodes, despite all the hate around The Third Man. In fact, my love for Balthazar and the fact I knew people would vote for Hollywood Babylon made me vote for TTM.
4. Out with the Old - it was a pretty good episode, unlike Defending Your Life. I loved Dean's desire to wear ballerina slippers. DYL also had Jo in it, so another reason for me not to vote for it.
5. Let it Bleed - great episode. I liked the Lovecraft storyline, the fact Ellie turned out a thing from Purgatory, Bobby investigating on his own and the fact Balthazar joined the Winchester team. Having Balthazar and Crowley in one episode also helps. I also cried like a baby when Cas wiped Dean out of Lisa and Ben's memory. The last scene in the car was probably the most heartbreaking moment of season 6.
6. Red Sky at Morning - Bela made this episode for me, all of the scenes with her were made of win. And Slice Girls was pretty forgettable.

Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid - The Girl Next Door wasn't the first episode I didn't like,but normally when a bad episode ends I'm sad for about a day and then I move on.But no...In this case,we were hearing about Amy for four episodes afterwards.FOUR!
Two an a Half Men - The scenes with the baby were fun and there was a cool fight with the shape shifter in the end.Season 7,Time for a Wedding was nothing special,and I don't even mind Becky that much.I imagine it was a disaster for those that don't like her.
The Third Man - Could have been better,but at least it gave us Balthazar.Actually,one of my problems with this episode came much later:the weapons.They spent the first half of the season searching for them and then,when Cas finally got them,he flashed his wings,he scared Raphael off and we never heard about them again.What!?Anyway,not a big fan of Hollywood Babylon.

Unforgiven - a great look into the escapades of soulless Sam. (It would've been better if he killed them all). Really cool monster too - one of the most underrated episodes ever.
Slice Girls - How is this losing???? It was a great character study of Dean and had some great brotherly teasing. That final scene in the car was amazing (Sam - Just don't get killed). So much to analyze in this one, like Sam driving the car, Dean drinking from the flask, Emma, etc. I was worried it would end up like the Amy situation, but it was far more mature.
For the wildcard polls, the highest ranked wild card position went against the lowest ranked one. Then the second highest went against the second lowest and so on until we met in the middle. All episodes were ranked by what percentage of the votes they received when we did the ranking polls during the winter hiatus.
We voted for the exact same episodes this time. Perhaps that bodes better for my choices than the last set of polls did. :-) I am interested in seeing the monsters that got away too. In fact one of the coolest things about Exile on Main St. for me is that it continued the monster story of my favorite episode, What is and What Should Never Be. I like that the djinn were getting revenge for their father. Not so stoked that they changed the details of the djinn but it was cool to have them back again.
Sounds like you also did a lot of voting against as compared to voting for. These episodes in particular seem to lend themselves to this type. I agree with all your choices and your reasons even if I ended up voting for Slice Girls instead of Red Sky....

Watching the Impala roar down the road to Back in Black is one of my favorite scenes. I wish she had gotten that kind of treatment at the beginning of season 7, when she came back with a whimper instead of the required celebration. Ah man, and now Dean's in Purgatory so he'll be separated from her again. Not fair show.
The weapons issue in French Mistake is what made it so hard for me to understand and agree with anything Cas did from that moment on. It certainly made his claims that he had to open Purgatory seem like an excuse to grab power. If he had tried the heaven weapons and they had failed, that would have been one thing. But he made such a big deal about Raphael coming to power and then when he had him/her, he let Raphael go. Just walk away. At that point it seemed like the Purgatory plan was more about Cas and less about Apocalypse 2.0 to me. This should have been a huge battle but instead it became a dropped plot point. It's teh biggest failure of French Mistake for me.
For Eli the bartender having only a few lines in Bloodlust, he made the most of them. This line was classic and I also loved how deadpan he was when Dean asked how it was going and he replied, "Living the dream." That line cracks me up every time.
I'm beginning to think the polls aren't going to be as close today as I thought. I picked all the same ones as you except Red Sky at Morning, which for me was a toss up.
I am a big anti-Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things person. I think the whole thing pretty much sucked and for the first time I thought both brothers sucked too. Sammy on his emotionally superior throne. Dean with his irrational hate interviewing style. It's just a hard episode for me to watch (especially when you throw creepy boy and emo zombie in the mix). However, the "Sam, I know how to do my job despite what you may think" and Sam's monologue about Dean the Scary Hunter were exceptionally good scenes. Both actors completely sold it and they became the highlight of the episode for me. Well that and some snarky Dean lines.
So glad that someone else thinks The Third Man is terrible. People were shocked when I put it on my top 25 worst Supernatural episodes of all time list. Generally SPN episodes, even ones I hate, have a few scenes that I can hang on to in order to get me through the episode. In TTM basically all I have is the scene where Sam's annoying car gets totaled and some shots of Baby after being tarped for too long.
It's surprising to me too that voting is fairly consistent today. I expected it to be more like yesterday when half the polls were too close to call until it ended.
You know...I didn't hate all of these episodes but I think I voted in line with you...in a couple of instances (like 1 and 2) I was voting against the ones you list here. #4 wasn't so much a vote against bu that there was something I liked better. I agree Defending Your Life should have been better with that concept but I didn't hate it...I just thought the other was better.

Lol, we did vote the same this time! I also liked the djinn callback in Exile. There were things in that episode that worked really well, and that was one of them. I also liked seeing Fred Lane again! He's so good. If season 8 can utilize some older monsters again, similar to what was done in Exile, it could be an awesome season.
hehe, yeah, it is. :) I can enjoy any episode, no matter how bad, if I can get some Winchester brother stuff! That is the meat of the show for me, so give me that and I'll suffer through any crap monster story. It's when they fail with the brothers that episodes really disappoint. This is why I can't enjoy the first half of season 6 - because Sam isn't really Sam and the moments aren't true! It's so hard for me, lol. Also - the fairy stuff in Clap Your Hands is so terrible. :(
Aside from being separated from Sammy, I hate that Dean just got Baby back, and now he's in Purgatory and can't even drive her! All I can say is that season 8 better give us lots of Impala scenes; I wanna see this new, souped up version in action (with Jensen driving, haha!).
Cannot agree more. I missed Baby more than any other character this season. She's AWOL in one season. We can't have Dean AWOL from her for another one. Somehow I don't think Purgatory is paved with roads, so I guess that means Dean needs to get out of Purgatory pretty quickly and get back on the road. Accompanied by some classic rock would be nice too.
When YED returned I about died. I was yelling that this couldn't be real and I was so glad that it didn't end up that way. It was an awesome way to show that while the times had changed, Dean's fears had not. Plus as you said, Lane is perfect in the role and it was great to have that menace that had been lacking for so long back on the screen.
It's one of the few times when I agree with the results of every poll so that surprises me too. Since this poll contained the episodes most closely ranked to each other, I am shocked that the results are not closer. Should make the contest quite interesting.
The Impala being gone most of the season was horrible. And classic rock is a MUST. Some GOOD stuff. There's got to be another AC/DC tune the show hasn't used yet. ;)
This is my totally unconfirmed, completely off the top of my head theory about SPN and AC/DC. I think that when Supernatural began, AC/DC was decently priced for a music budget. However, with all those Supernatural fans rediscovering the goodness of AC/DC and rebuying their CDs (and because they released a new album and have been doing a lot lately) the AC/DC resurgence has boosted their music out of the range of the woeful SPN budget. My fondest hope is that the last season (far off in the future mind you) will be one classic rock song after another as a beautiful send-off and homage to vintage SPN.
oh man. That's depressing for us, as fans, but if you're right, good on AC/DC, lol. I mean if they can't afford the "good" stuff anymore (though it is nice that they are reusing some of the good stuff - at least that's happening!). I've liked a lot of the music they have used, but I can tell it's the second tier classic rock (though not Doobie Brothers! Black Water was friggin' awesome and my favorite use of music this season! I mean aside from the obvious Carry On Wayward Son of course) that we've been getting the last two seasons. Ugh. Well - I hope you are right about the final season (far, far, FAR in the future!).
I have always thought that AC/DC and all the other groups whose music is used should let SPN play their songs gratis, as they have had positive pubblicity from the airing on the show.
I wonder how many more copies of Wayward Son have been sold because of its use as the "theme song"?

I agree completely and I can't think of a more fitting song to transmit the essence of the Winchester brothers. I've always liked it but since it's been associated with SPN, it makes my heart jump every time. :)
I don't know who deals with the record companies about the music on SPN, but if it were me, I would be hammering them for at least a reduction of the costs in exchange for the promotional advertising they are getting on the show.
You're right. I'm sure that the Kansas team have had, and will continue to have, a much greater revenue through SPN, and it would be interesting to see how much, but I suppose that kind of information would be difficult to get.

In an interesting turn of events, every single poll has exactly 1 episode on my worst of SPN list. Voting has never been easier. Doesn't matter how I feel about the other episode, so this is the list of which episodes I voted AGAINST
ReplyDelete1. The Girl Next Door - This episode is in a class all by itself. I think it's label should be Most Toxic, in that it infected all the episodes around it. As an episode itself it was meh, but when you consider the long-term effects of the highly irritating Amy subplot it is sooooo much worse. Where's an angel mind wipe when you need one.
2. Season 7, Time for a Wedding - In all honesty it was better than I thought it would be. Of course I expected it to be hands down the worst episode in the entire SPN run. It turned out merely bad.
3. The Third Man - And we're walking, and we're walking, and there's a frog, and we're walking, and we're going to torture a kid before walking......This episode commits the biggest of all Supernatural sins for me. It was utterly boring.
4. Defending Your Life - Great concept, lousy writing. Not only did this episode make both brothers look like morons (Sam especially) but not one damn thing was resolved in an episode all about guilt. You would think Dean would learn to release some guilt he carried and progress through the rest of the season in a better frame of mind. Nope! This episode was completely useless and since it had potential, it makes it even worse.
5. Unforgiven - Ah, the other matching piece to Mannequin 3 in the Season 6 UGH! set. Both were filler. Both made me roll my eyes. Both were utterly forgettable.
6. Red Sky at Morning - This was actually my hardest choice because Slice Girls had way too many shades of Amy for my taste. However the plot line of Red Sky at Morning was utterly ridiculous so that gave it the nudge. Besides, Kripke apologized for this episode so no much more to say. I did like the brothers in tuxes though so if this one makes it in I won't be aghast.

ReplyDeleteDead Men Don't Wear Plaid - Not only is this a good episode, but it's up against The Girl Next Door which was not so good. In Dead Men we got to learn more about Bobby, which I loved. Jim Beaver can certainly bring the emotional moments when needed. It's also in this one that we begin to see the evidence of Dean starting to succumb to the "Michael-vessel" pressure.
Two and Half Men - anything automatically wins over Season 7, Time for a Wedding, as that episode is in my bottom five for sure. But Two and Half Men was cute. I enjoyed seeing Sam and Dean (especially Dean) with the baby(s). Jensen looks hot as hell with a baby. Sorry, I went there. But it's true. I think this was also the "official" intro of the Alpha's storyline?
Hollywood Babylon - Dean as a dedicated P.A.! Dean eating tons of junk food! Is there any other reason to not vote for this one? It's a toss-away in season 2, but fun. It had some fun, meta-moments, that weren't so on the nose as later episodes. I just like it. As for The Third Man...meeting Balthazar is the best part of that episode. :-\
Out With the Old - This episode aired tonight on The CW, and watching it again it's really a solid story. Not exceptional, not bad. It's certainly better than Defending Your Life. I also really like the last scene with the guys as they are leaving town with the trailer in tow and Dean mentions putting on a soft-rock station for Sam to fall asleep too. That was certainly an "awwwww" moment, one of very few this season.
Let It Bleed - I really like this episode. Probably because I like Lisa and Ben. It's in an odd place in the season though, just before the finale, which likely doesn't lend itself to being liked by many. I can't help but be drawn in by Dean's single-minded mission to save Lisa and Ben and the beginning, when Ben calls Dean about the intruders and then Crowley picks up the phone. Whoa. I love that sequence. Even though I kind of hate the end, with Cas wiping their memories, there's no other way they could be written off and be considered safe. Though just because they don't remember Dean doesn't mean they still couldn't be used against Dean. But I'll chose to ignore that plothole. I still kind of wish for more closure for Dean on the subject of Lisa and Ben but I don't think that'll ever happen.
The Slice Girls - I don't hate this episode. I don't love it. I like it. I'll watch it again and again with no complaints. It's just there. And the monsters got away, which means we could see them again, which I find awesome. It's nice to know there are "familiar" monsters out there (Alpha vamp included). Red Sky at Morning is one of the weaker episodes in season 3, and while I don't hate it as much as others, it's not one I look forward to watching necessarily. Though I do find Gert's hitting on Sam to be pretty hilarious.

ReplyDeleteI'm just bummed Jensen got such a crap episode for his second directorial effort (Girl Next Door). Hopefully his episode in season 8 is better, script-wise.
The brothers in tuxes was the most redeeming quality of Red Sky.
I vote for the Girl Next Door simply because I love wee Sam and Colin Ford.

For a start, I don't like zombie stories.
The only positive for me was that we got the Jodie Mills character and the big siege to Bobby's closet
I didn't like the way that Bobby was so quick to turn against his "surrogate sons" when he had his wife to defend. It's understandable but I didn't like it.
I voted for Two and a Half Men just for the sheer pleasure of seeing the brothers working their first case together. We get our first notions about the Alphas and Dean's line in the supermarket to the old lady about handing over the baby was priceless. There was also a nice moment between the brothers in the motel room.Then I always like Dean's snarkiness with the eerie Campbell family.
The other episode is best forgotten.
I vote for The Third Man as I didn't like Hollywood Babylon; a bit boring and too meta for my taste.
In TTM, we get the dubious pleasure of seeing Castiel again but in compensation we get to meet the amoral Balthazar. The rest of the episode was nothing special but I'm still on a roll with seeing the brothers working together again.
I vote for Unforgiven.
I liked that we got to see something of what Sam had gone through when he was soulless. It left me wanting to know more.
Pity that they didn't go back to it in season seven instead of giving us stuff like Time for A Wedding.
Let it Bleed was okay too; the whole Lovecraft thing was good And although I have nothing against Ben and Lisa, I just didn't feel that it was the moment to bring them back into the story-arc.
I am probably one of the few who like Red Sky At Morning.
It had some good brotherly moments and Dean practically fainting when he sees the Impala gone was hilarious. The only part I didn't like was Gert and while I can understand her crush on Sam, it was rather creepy. Then the boys in Tuxedos. Just wow!
Also I liked Bela. I thought she was interesting and was capable of giving the Winchesters a run for their money.

ReplyDelete1. Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid - love that we learn more about Bobby's life. Plus we get Sheriff Jody Mills, always a bonus. I thought the story was heartbreaking and interesting. One of the best episodes in this.
2. 2.5 Men - we got alphas and Winchesters with babies. I thought the idea of monster babies to be interesting. How do you deal with that?
3. Hollywood Babylon - I really enjoyed this story, mostly for the humor and because Dean was actually happy. It's rare that either brother finds joy in something and those are always high moments for me.
4. Out with the Old - isn't Defending Your Life. That's enough for me.
5. Let It Bleed - rocked! I was a huge fan of this episode except for the torture scene in the middle and the last 10 minutes. I thought Possessed Lisa was a lot of fun and it was sad to see Ben carrying that gun despite Dean trying to shield him from the hunting life. Plus it has lots of Crowley and that always means fun.
6. Don't care which one wins this one although I voted Slice Girls.
Ha! Totally agree regarding the scene in Red Sky with Dean and the missing Impala. That was one of the best Dean/Impala moments in the whole series. He really loves his car (as he should, she's a beaut!). ;)

ReplyDeleteI totally forgot that Sheriff Mills was introduced in Dead Men...hope she's around in s8!I'm glad to see someone else who liked Let it Bleed! The sight of Ben with the gun was pretty tragic. That episode in general was a heartbreaker. Why don't you like the torture scene? Is there a specific reason or just generally it's not something you like to see? I thought it showed how far Dean was willing to let himself go in order to save Lisa and Ben, as horrifying as it probably was for him.
Yes, the scene was cute and Sam consoling him was too :) Bad Bela making Dean suffer!
ReplyDeleteI've always enjoyed that episode and I often wonder just why it isn't more appreciated, for although the ghost story might not have been of the best, it certainly isn't any worse than the plot-lines in other episodes that are considered excellent.
Well, I suppose it's as they say "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!" :)

Out With The Old - Unlike "Defending Your Life", it actually advanced the mytharc instead of showing Dean sinking into depression.
Red Sky at Morning - It had Bela in it who was really fun to have around even though the premise of the episode was rather weak. "The Slice Girls" on the other hand is another episode which I won't be watching again anytime soon. (It's funny now that I look at it that how many episodes from Season 6 & 7 I'm not that keen to watch again.)

ReplyDeleteI could probably think of episodes that I have liked less percentage-wise but still enjoyed, eg., Clap your hands if you Believe.
I would say I liked it 50/50. I loved all the brotherly stufff, Dean trying to make Soulless Sam understand the ins and outs of emotion and brotherly caring, and I hated the fairy part but I watch it happily just the same.

The first quote came at such a wonderful carefree moment for the brothers and the Dean and the Impala getting a room quote doesn't even seem so outlandish :)
The second the classic "only Dean gets to call him Sammy" line is so sweet..
Dean: (referring to the Impala) Woah!! Listen to her purr! Have you ever heard anything so sweet?
Sam: You know, if you two want to get a room, just let me know, Dean.
Dean: Don't listen to him, baby. He doesn't understand us.

CSPWDT is not one of my favourites. Zombies again! But there are some nice brotherly moments and some great quotes. I was going to pick the "we've come to hug," but I went with the more angsty ones.
Dean: Sam. You and Dad... you're the most important people in my
life. And now... I never should have come back, Sam. It wasn't natural.
And now look what's come of it. I was dead. And I should have stayed
dead. You wanted to know how I was feeling. Well, that's it.
So tell me. What could you possibly say to make that all right?

1. No vote. The Girl Next Door gave us the pointless and terrible Amy storyline, so I could vote against it, only I don't even remember Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid. It was completely forgettable for me.
ReplyDelete2. Two and a Half Man - I liked the boys with the baby and the baby monster storyline. Also, wasn't it the episode, where we first found out about the alphas? Plus the other episode was pretty bad. Not completely awful, but bad enough to vote against it.
3. I actually liked both episodes, despite all the hate around The Third Man. In fact, my love for Balthazar and the fact I knew people would vote for Hollywood Babylon made me vote for TTM.
4. Out with the Old - it was a pretty good episode, unlike Defending Your Life. I loved Dean's desire to wear ballerina slippers. DYL also had Jo in it, so another reason for me not to vote for it.
5. Let it Bleed - great episode. I liked the Lovecraft storyline, the fact Ellie turned out a thing from Purgatory, Bobby investigating on his own and the fact Balthazar joined the Winchester team. Having Balthazar and Crowley in one episode also helps. I also cried like a baby when Cas wiped Dean out of Lisa and Ben's memory. The last scene in the car was probably the most heartbreaking moment of season 6.
6. Red Sky at Morning - Bela made this episode for me, all of the scenes with her were made of win. And Slice Girls was pretty forgettable.

Two an a Half Men - The scenes with the baby were fun and there was a cool fight with the shape shifter in the end.Season 7,Time for a Wedding was nothing special,and I don't even mind Becky that much.I imagine it was a disaster for those that don't like her.
The Third Man - Could have been better,but at least it gave us Balthazar.Actually,one of my problems with this episode came much later:the weapons.They spent the first half of the season searching for them and then,when Cas finally got them,he flashed his wings,he scared Raphael off and we never heard about them again.What!?Anyway,not a big fan of Hollywood Babylon.

Let It Bleed - Very good episode,if a little predictable as far as the whole plot with Lisa and Ben goes.I think I'm one of the few people that actually liked Lisa.In my opinion,the episode would have had more recognition if it had aired alone.It got a little lost airing right before the finale.
Red Sky at Morning - Not a huge fan of either,but Red Sky at Morning had a few great scenes and thus gets the vote.

Hollywood Babylon - The Third Man is my third least favourite episode of all time. Nuff said.
Out with the Old - A very solid episode that moved the leviathans forward. (Joyce and George were amazing). Jared played Sam very well. And, you know, it was against Defending your life. 3 out of the 4 bad season seven episodes in this poll.
Unforgiven - a great look into the escapades of soulless Sam. (It would've been better if he killed them all). Really cool monster too - one of the most underrated episodes ever.
Slice Girls - How is this losing???? It was a great character study of Dean and had some great brotherly teasing. That final scene in the car was amazing (Sam - Just don't get killed). So much to analyze in this one, like Sam driving the car, Dean drinking from the flask, Emma, etc. I was worried it would end up like the Amy situation, but it was far more mature.
For the wildcard polls, the highest ranked wild card position went against the lowest ranked one. Then the second highest went against the second lowest and so on until we met in the middle. All episodes were ranked by what percentage of the votes they received when we did the ranking polls during the winter hiatus.
ReplyDeleteWe voted for the exact same episodes this time. Perhaps that bodes better for my choices than the last set of polls did. :-) I am interested in seeing the monsters that got away too. In fact one of the coolest things about Exile on Main St. for me is that it continued the monster story of my favorite episode, What is and What Should Never Be. I like that the djinn were getting revenge for their father. Not so stoked that they changed the details of the djinn but it was cool to have them back again.

ReplyDeleteWatching the Impala roar down the road to Back in Black is one of my favorite scenes. I wish she had gotten that kind of treatment at the beginning of season 7, when she came back with a whimper instead of the required celebration. Ah man, and now Dean's in Purgatory so he'll be separated from her again. Not fair show.
ReplyDeleteThe weapons issue in French Mistake is what made it so hard for me to understand and agree with anything Cas did from that moment on. It certainly made his claims that he had to open Purgatory seem like an excuse to grab power. If he had tried the heaven weapons and they had failed, that would have been one thing. But he made such a big deal about Raphael coming to power and then when he had him/her, he let Raphael go. Just walk away. At that point it seemed like the Purgatory plan was more about Cas and less about Apocalypse 2.0 to me. This should have been a huge battle but instead it became a dropped plot point. It's teh biggest failure of French Mistake for me.
ReplyDeleteFor Eli the bartender having only a few lines in Bloodlust, he made the most of them. This line was classic and I also loved how deadpan he was when Dean asked how it was going and he replied, "Living the dream." That line cracks me up every time.
I'm beginning to think the polls aren't going to be as close today as I thought. I picked all the same ones as you except Red Sky at Morning, which for me was a toss up.
ReplyDeleteI am a big anti-Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things person. I think the whole thing pretty much sucked and for the first time I thought both brothers sucked too. Sammy on his emotionally superior throne. Dean with his irrational hate interviewing style. It's just a hard episode for me to watch (especially when you throw creepy boy and emo zombie in the mix). However, the "Sam, I know how to do my job despite what you may think" and Sam's monologue about Dean the Scary Hunter were exceptionally good scenes. Both actors completely sold it and they became the highlight of the episode for me. Well that and some snarky Dean lines.
So glad that someone else thinks The Third Man is terrible. People were shocked when I put it on my top 25 worst Supernatural episodes of all time list. Generally SPN episodes, even ones I hate, have a few scenes that I can hang on to in order to get me through the episode. In TTM basically all I have is the scene where Sam's annoying car gets totaled and some shots of Baby after being tarped for too long.

ReplyDeleteYou know...I didn't hate all of these episodes but I think I voted in line with you...in a couple of instances (like 1 and 2) I was voting against the ones you list here. #4 wasn't so much a vote against bu that there was something I liked better. I agree Defending Your Life should have been better with that concept but I didn't hate it...I just thought the other was better.

Lol, we did vote the same this time! I also liked the djinn callback in Exile. There were things in that episode that worked really well, and that was one of them. I also liked seeing Fred Lane again! He's so good. If season 8 can utilize some older monsters again, similar to what was done in Exile, it could be an awesome season.

ReplyDeleteI can enjoy any episode, no matter how bad, if I can get some Winchester brother stuff! That is the meat of the show for me, so give me that and I'll suffer through any crap monster story. It's when they fail with the brothers that episodes really disappoint. This is why I can't enjoy the first half of season 6 - because Sam isn't really Sam and the moments aren't true! It's so hard for me, lol. Also - the fairy stuff in Clap Your Hands is so terrible. :(
Aside from being separated from Sammy, I hate that Dean just got Baby back, and now he's in Purgatory and can't even drive her! All I can say is that season 8 better give us lots of Impala scenes; I wanna see this new, souped up version in action (with Jensen driving, haha!).

ReplyDeleteCannot agree more. I missed Baby more than any other character this season. She's AWOL in one season. We can't have Dean AWOL from her for another one. Somehow I don't think Purgatory is paved with roads, so I guess that means Dean needs to get out of Purgatory pretty quickly and get back on the road. Accompanied by some classic rock would be nice too.
ReplyDeleteWhen YED returned I about died. I was yelling that this couldn't be real and I was so glad that it didn't end up that way. It was an awesome way to show that while the times had changed, Dean's fears had not. Plus as you said, Lane is perfect in the role and it was great to have that menace that had been lacking for so long back on the screen.
ReplyDeleteIt's one of the few times when I agree with the results of every poll so that surprises me too. Since this poll contained the episodes most closely ranked to each other, I am shocked that the results are not closer. Should make the contest quite interesting.

ReplyDeleteThis is my totally unconfirmed, completely off the top of my head theory about SPN and AC/DC. I think that when Supernatural began, AC/DC was decently priced for a music budget. However, with all those Supernatural fans rediscovering the goodness of AC/DC and rebuying their CDs (and because they released a new album and have been doing a lot lately) the AC/DC resurgence has boosted their music out of the range of the woeful SPN budget. My fondest hope is that the last season (far off in the future mind you) will be one classic rock song after another as a beautiful send-off and homage to vintage SPN.
ReplyDeleteoh man. That's depressing for us, as fans, but if you're right, good on AC/DC, lol. I mean if they can't afford the "good" stuff anymore (though it is nice that they are reusing some of the good stuff - at least that's happening!). I've liked a lot of the music they have used, but I can tell it's the second tier classic rock (though not Doobie Brothers! Black Water was friggin' awesome and my favorite use of music this season! I mean aside from the obvious Carry On Wayward Son of course) that we've been getting the last two seasons. Ugh. Well - I hope you are right about the final season (far, far, FAR in the future!).
ReplyDeleteI have always thought that AC/DC and all the other groups whose music is used should let SPN play their songs gratis, as they have had positive pubblicity from the airing on the show.

So true! I would be curious to know if there's a legitimate spike in iTunes song sales (when available - boo on AC/DC for having not gone digital) after a new episode of SPN that features a classic rock song...

Carry on Wayward Son...I bet Kansas will be getting money for that one as long as SPN airs on any channel. Best anthem of a TV show, ever.
I agree completely and I can't think of a more fitting song to transmit the essence of the Winchester brothers.
ReplyDeleteI've always liked it but since it's been associated with SPN, it makes my heart jump every time. :)
I don't know who deals with the record companies about the music on SPN, but if it were me, I would be hammering them for at least a reduction of the costs in exchange for the promotional advertising they are getting on the show.
You're right.
I'm sure that the Kansas team have had, and will continue to have, a much greater revenue through SPN, and it would be interesting to see how much, but I suppose that kind of information would be difficult to get.
