We're going to take a one-day break in our Ultimate Supernatural Episode contest so that I can get the wildcard episodes in ranked order and because I need to start posting these polls earlier. Having a one-day break will allow our first set of polls to have the same time limit as all others. So instead, today we honor Sera Gamble. Gamble has earned writing credit on 29 Supernatural episodes. Given that there have been 149 episodes all together that means she has written a little under 20%, or almost 1 out of every 5 episodes. In fact, she's written enough episodes for an entire season and a third of another. Gamble is SPN's most prolific writer and in my opinion has written some of the best episodes. So what is your favorite Sera-written episode? Since there are so many of them, you can actually cheat a bit and vote for 2. ReplyDeleteFirst choice was easy - Faith for sure. It's the first episode I ever saw, and to date is still on my top 10.
ReplyDeleteSecond choice, not so much. I just can't decide between When the Levee Breaks and Death's Door. Both incredibly emotional, character driven episodes (like many of Sera's) that break my heart when I see them. I'll decide later.
I'll take this opportunity to thank Sera Gamble for all that she's done for Supernatural. She's the best writer we've ever had and really got the brothers, and nothing will tarnish my memory of that. She got a lot of criticism for having to do the impossible as show runner, but in the end, she was the best member of the SPN crew.

ReplyDelete1. - Jus in Bello. This vote is a no brainer. Not only is it Gamble's best episode but it's one of the best of the series as well.
2. - Meet the New Boss. This was a more difficult decision. There are other episodes Gamble did that are on par with this one but Meet the New Boss was a bit riskier than most of the others she penned.
All Hell Breaks Loose - Part 1 and Part 2 are my favorite of Supernatural history.

ReplyDeleteMy votes were for Faith, and The Song Remains the Same.
Faith is among my top 5, sometimes no.1, sometimes no.2. Depends on my mood. I just love it, and adore it, and it was Faith that completely sold me on this show. Up to then my feelings about it were lukewarm as the beginning of season 1 wanders a bit tonally, but then Faith happened and I died from the awesome and I've not looked back since.
The Song Remains the Same, I'm certain, will not be many other people's choice. But there's something about this episode that I really love. Sam gets to "meet" his parents, the revelation to young Mary that Sam and Dean are her children, we finally meet Michael, etc. I just like the emotion play that we get in this one. It's just too bad it's at the expense of Anna - I really liked her. :(

ReplyDeleteI wasn't a fan of her as a showrunner, but looking at the episodes she's written, she did a very fine job as a writer. And it makes me a little sadder about her legacy. I'm going to try to remember her for her episodes--many of which were quite good.
ReplyDeleteWhile it is easy to pick my top 10 Sera Gamble episodes (Dead in the Water, Faith, Bloodlust, Crossroad Blues, The Kids Are Alright, Jus in Bello, It's a Terrible Life, Appointment in Samarra, Meet the New Boss, and Death's Door), it is very hard to pick just 2. I purposely limited the choice to only 2 though because I think as a whole the fandom has lost sight of just how important Sera Gamble is to this show. She had an influence just under Kripke's and has been their most trusted writer, the go-to person, for years. She will be missed.
ReplyDeleteDead in the Water - As I have said a lot this week, this is the episode that turned Supernatural into must-see TV for me. It's also the episode (along with Jensen's acting of course) that turned Dean from what could have been a one-dimensional character into a full-fledged, immensely intriguing character.
Faith was a powerful story not just because of the great monster of the week and fantastic back story but also because it gave us a chance to see Sam do anything for Dean. That characters reversal really made the episode for me and made Sam an even more sympathetic character. This was a tightly written episode that delivers in all aspects.
Bloodlust - I just watched this yesterday and it's still as powerful as the day it first aired. It is the first episode to bring in the monster's POV and to pose the difficult question of whether something should be killed as a monster because of its species or because of what it does.
Crossroad Blues - What at the time was taken as a standalone episode became the core of the mytharc from season 3 on. Rewatching this episode after seeing the seasons that come after it makes it even more powerful, especially Dean's reaction to people making these deals.
The Kids are Alright was another episode that seemed very standalone but then became even more important later. I loved the introduction of Lisa and Ben, especially since Dean was trying to find the meaning of his life at that time. It was heartfelt and wistful but never emoangsty, the best kind of drama.
Jus in Bello may be my favorite of all the mytharc, non-finale episodes. Poised perfectly after a string of some of the best SPN episodes ever, Jus in Bello raised the bar. I loved watching Hendrickson realize everything he thought he knew was wrong. This episode did a great job with immersing characters in the action and letting the development flow naturally from there.
It's a Terrible Life - No, this episode is not terribly important in the scheme of things, but I think it was one of the more difficult to write well. Fans were not thrilled when they heard the synopsis of this story but afterwards most people I saw online thought it was excellent. To take characters we know so well and change everything about them yet still stay true to who they are at the core took great talent.
Appointment in Samarra was RoboSam's last hurrah. To have RoboSam go after Bobby like that was one of the most heart stopping moments of the season to me and helped me, who loved RoboSam for his humor and lack of guilt, see it was truly time for him to go. Plus there was that other plot of Dean becoming Death which was also riveting.
Meet the New Boss was exactly what season 7 needed to start off with a bang. While I did not like the political and religious finger pointing, everything else in the episode hit big time. It was the first time that I actually feared Castiel and was the finest moment of acting on SPN for Misha Collins in my opinion.
Death's Door - This may be the greatest character exploration episode of them all. It combined humor, action, and pathos in such a harmonizing way that the entire episode was riveting. It really was a great tribute to Bobby and one of the few episodes that leave me close to tears no matter how many times I watch it. Brilliant writing!
In many ways, Supernatural is as much Sera Gamble as it is Eric Kripke. They both sunk their hearts, souls, and lives into making this incredible show. To dismiss her contributions is to dismiss a large part of what made Supernatural a cult favorite. She understood the characters through and through and helped make them who they were. I will miss her touch on SPN and I wish her nothing but the best in her future. I look forward to watching whatever she puts her incredible talents to next.

for 2nd place i am confused between Jus In Bello and Two Minutes To Midnight..
I hope the show can survive without her special touch. There are no women (as of right now) on the writing team, not that being a woman is required to write touching episodes, but that seemed to be the trend in the past. I hope Jeremy will not only be the showrunner, but also write like Sera and Eric did during their tenures because I know he has a special way of writing the show that I really like.
ReplyDeleteThe only episode on the Sera Gamble-list I can't really stomach is Appointment in Samarra; and that's not to do with how it was written necessarily, but just due to the fact that we were still dealing with Soulless Sam and I was so tired of him. SO TIRED. :-\
ReplyDeleteI liked Dean's SL as Death for a day, but the best part of the episode was the very end when Death came and shoved Sam's soul back in his body.
There are almost too many good choices but Dead in the Water and Death's Door are my favorites of all.
ReplyDeleteNext season will certainly be interesting. Carver was hit or miss for me as a writer, writing some of my absolute favorite episodes but also writing some on my Worst of SPN list. He seems to be particularly adept at blending comedy and drama in an episode and that is a plus. As far as show running, I guess the best news is that people who watch Being Human seem to be sad to see him leave. That is very encouraging to me.

ReplyDeleteIt was definitely time for RoboSam to exit the building although I loved his humor. For me the worst Sera Gamble episodes are Houses of the Holy, Time is on My Side, and Born-Again Identity. Still there are much much worse episodes than these.

It was full of great brother moments but still had the humor and action I need in an episode. For my second choice, I picked Jus in Bello although I was very tempted to pick Dead in the Water. ReplyDeleteLord, I forgot she was responsible for Born-Again Identity (how could I forget! We just voted on this one a few days ago...). Yeah, that's definitely one of her worst. And Appointment in Samarra is good, I just can't take any more of NOT!Sam/Soulless!Sam/Robo!Sam. But you are right, even Sera's worst episodes are better than many others.
ReplyDeleteI actually think there will be a shake up in the writers' room if not at the beginning of this season then definitely by the time season 9 begins. Robbie Thompson was a huge score but there have been some big misses too. I've spent quite some time lately looking at all Supernatural writers and what they wrote in preparation for a mini-contest poll set later in the hellatus. It's very interesting how so many were 1 episode and done. I think some of the consistency people have felt is lacking comes from a lack of cohesiveness in the writers and I would expect Carver to set up the writing room with people he feels more in sync with.

Oh I hope you're right! I know that Ben Acker and Ben Blacker, who wrote my 2nd fav s7 ep The Mentalists, were on staff but then were let out of their contract early (at least that's what I could decipher from things I heard said by B.Blacker on his Writer's Panel podcast). I wonder if there were just too many writers that there were so many one-off's. Also, Robbie Thompson was definitely a score. He did two really good episodes this season!

ReplyDeleteI think I was more of a fan of Sera's writing when she had someone else keeping her in check. Although I loved Death's Door and Crossroads Blues for their complexity and overall storytelling, as well as Houses of the Holy for its symmetry, I had to go with Faith, which was co-written by Raelle Tucker (as were most of her season 1 eps), and Jus in Bello, which I believe was a story handed to her by Kripke t write. But there is no denying she wrote some great episodes and I will miss her touch in some of those. But, as a fan of Being Human (and even more, a fan of quite a few of Jeremy Carver's episodes) I am very much looking forward to welcoming him back into the fold.

ReplyDeleteI don't like her as showrunner, but I think the episodes she wrote this season were plotted out well, if only being out of necessity, since they were some of the more important episodes.
ReplyDeleteI am not happy with how she kept killing people off and the death of Bobby didn't do anything good, just made the boys even more depressed, which I keep thinking if they were normal people they'd crawl into a corner lol. Looking back, this was probably the worst year yet for them loss wise. It was said they wanted to make Sam and Dean more alone, but that did not work out, imo.
Plus, the addition of Frank and Garth were okay, but I felt like Frank was just a replacement for Bobby (and I resented that), and Garth was a little too silly with the sock puppet. Plus bringing Becky back was pointless and made for a glaring "no" episode for me. I'd like to erase everything about that episode except for a couple jokes and Crowley. I'd have liked more "real" people around, if you know what I mean. Though SPN has always had a lot of quirky people around.
Geez, there are some good episodes there! Too hard to code only two!

Oh dear this was really hard. In the end I went with Dead In The Water (that remains to this day one of my favorite eps of SPN ever) and Jus In Bello. If I could pick my top 5 Sera eps, I'd also pick Faith, All Hell Breaks Loose, and Survival of The Fittest.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I felt Sera struggled as a showrunner, especially with pacing the overall story arcs of season 6 and 7, you can't deny that she's an excellent writer of individual eps. She'll be missed.

I'm sure he wrote bad episodes as well as good ones too.
I don't think it's fair when Kripke gets all the praise and Sera gets accused of doing everything wrong. I'm sure he made mistakes too.

ReplyDeleteOnly 3 others have written 15 or more episodes: Eric Kripke, Ben Edlund, and my very least favorite Dabb & Loflin. For those who have written at least 7, add: John Shiban, Raelle Tucker, Cathryn Humphries, Jeremy Carver, and Adam Glass. There are a lot of SPN writers who only have 1-3 episodes to their credit. It seems strange to me.
I plan to do writer ones with Kripke, Edlund, and Carver. They are easy to plug in when we need something for a day or two. I also plan on have an all out writer head-to-head contest with everyone who has ever gotten a writing credit on SPN.

I loved this episode and Andy. He was so sweet. The story was really interesting and when Andy took the Impala it was hilarious, as was Dean trying not to tell the truth as in the quote, with Sam looking on aghast!

I quite liked this episode though it isn't one of my favourites, and I have absolutely nothing against Jo. I just wish the writers hadn't killed off every female in the earlier seasons of the show.
We could maybe have had an episode with them now and again without having to bring them back from the dead to do so!

ReplyDeleteThere are certainly some great Kripke episodes amongst the above, but there are a couple that for me are meh, and a couple which are horrible.
Kripke had the wonderful idea of Supernatural and he picked two perfect actors for the roles of the two brothers, actors who would exhibit perfect chemistry on-screen and endear the viewers to the show.
However I don't like it when one person gets all the credit and others get trashed, so kudos to Sera and to all the other writers who have given us memorable episodes, and if sometimes their writing hasn't been up to scratch; well nobody's perfect!
I would like to tell something and clarify a doubt. First of all, an episode written by a writer, does it 100% belong to him/her? Because on other websites I have seen some posters saying that, only a significant part of the episode is written by the writer, that gets the screen credit. But, every writer got some part to play in every episode, the show runner taking the bigger role obviously.

Faith, The Kids Are Alright, Jus in Bello, Are You There God? It's Me, Dean Winchester, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Appointment in Samarra, Meet the New Boss and The Born-Again Identity
That's 8 episodes.
Then I tried to shorten the list. The ultimate "I don't know what to do next" list is this:
The Kids Are Alright - the mosters were one of the scariest ever, they really got me, there's just something terribly creepy about monsters taking shape of kids. Lisa and Ben were great, especially loved Ben as the mini-Dean and Dean's confusion whether he was his father or not.
Jus in Bello - one of Supernatural's top-top elite episodes and one I'm sure to vote for without a doubt. So actually this entire analysis is just to find Jus in Bello's partner as Sera Gamble's best. I love Henriksen and Nancy, I love the demon fight and exorcisms, I love the angel faced Lilith show up at the end and so much more about this episode. It's pure perfection.
Are You There, God?... - a great follow up to Lazarus Rising and a great introduction of the Apocalypse storyline. Actually, I believe only Meet the New Boss and Hello, Cruel World could challenge LR and AYTG?IMDW as the best first&second episode combination. I loved the witnesses, cause it let us see some of the great guest characters from before again. I love the reveal of the Apocalypse and the first mention of Lucifer, the one that actually made me scared and excited for what was to come. Too bad the real Lucifer never lived up to that first impression.
Meet the New Boss - one of the best season premieres we've had (next to IMToD and LR) and definitely the biggest one. First the scary "I'm the new God" Cas, then we had Death reveal the truth about the Leviathans. Good stuff and a lot of action. Like I said, BIG premiere.
So yeah, that's 4 episodes now and like I said, I'm sure I'm voting for Jus in Bello, so now it's just a matter of choosing the other one. Gonna need some time to think.

Her best ones IMO are the ones she HASN'T written alone (because I've never believed she is that strong a writer or storyteller without help even though she has written many episodes - and her tenure as showrunner proved that point further to me), and my two favourite of that lot are DitW and DaLDoM.

I adore Andy too. He was the only thing I regretted about the Special Kids plot line ending. He was just so innocent for lack of a better word.

ReplyDeleteWelcome. Thanks for sharing your opinion. I thought hard about Bloodlust too. Not only was it a great episode but it also made me think more than most episodes do. It was quite the game changer to make some monsters good.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. They touted this season as a "Butch & Sundance" feel, but if you think about it, although Butch and Sundance were on their own running from the law, they never stopped being who they were. They still did what they wanted, they still went where they wanted and they still had fun. They hadn't lost everything and given up. That's what I saw with Sam and Dean this season. They killed off everyone! What was wrong with having them make the decision to stay away from ppl they cared about because the Levi's were on their tails instead of actually taking everyone away? Of course, I never got the idea the Levi's were on their tails, even tho it was said out loud. Killing everyone was a mistake, putting the heroes in a position where they had no hope and were just going through the motions because it was 'their job' was a huge mistake. And then, like you said, replacing Bobby with Frank -- then killing him, too? Garth and Becky weren't necessary to bring back, they didn't really have any purpose. And yes, the show needs more 'real' people, like Ellen and Rufus (even tho he was a bit quirky!) and Bobby. People that are on the same level as the boys and can help them with the overall scope of their job.
