UPDATE:
Just a rumor.
SPN fans: your wires are crossed. @bnacker and I have left the show. Edlund is staying. They need his magical brain!
— Ben Blacker (@BenBlacker) June 3, 2012
Nooooooooooooooo. I love Ben's episodes! I don't want him to go.
ReplyDeleteBen Acker and Ben Blacker are leaving...they've left already, Maybe this is just a mix up of Bens? Acker and Blacker are a team.
ReplyDeleteNoooooooooooooooo. I can't let him go. I want Ben & Jeremy again. I want him to bring back Bathazar. I want Ben and Misha's epic episode more. Nooooooooo. *cries* Please. Tell me it's not true.
ReplyDeleteWhat? NO! My biggest joy of having Jeremy Carver back was the realisation that now we'll have TWO people who write brilliant Castiel! And now Edlund is leaving? My favourite Spn writer? Bullshit. Please tell me it's a mix-up of Bens. Spn will not be the same without Edlund onboard.
ReplyDeleteis for the (new) show runner they make that decision we hope not
ReplyDeleteIt's still a rumor,so I'm not worrying yet.
ReplyDeleteThere's a possibility that they meant Ben Acker and not Edlund.Ben Acker and Ben Blacker are writing partners(the wrote The Mentalists) and they are leaving the show.
With so many Bens, maybe someone made a mistake. We'll see...
I am with you on this, I love Edlund's eps, so praying for a mistake.
ReplyDeleteHas anyone actually confirmed this with CW or Jim Michaels? I find it odd that the media would know before any of the fans.
ReplyDeleteIt would actually make more sense than Edlund leaving.
ReplyDeleteWouldn't it?I think so too..
ReplyDeleteI mean,it's possible, but if Edlund was to leave wouldn't they announce it with(or shortly after) Sera Gamble's departure? He's not just a writer like Blacker,he's an executive producer as well, and one of the 3-4 big names in the SPN world.
I think it's weird that he would make a decision now, especially since they've started breaking season 8 down.
I don't know though.I hope we're right.
I think its more likely to Acker and Blacker but if Ben Edlund were to leave it would not surprise me, he might want to move on to other projects. It wouldn't really bother me much.
ReplyDeleteI don't know who Ben Blacker is but I am not at all worried that Edlund is leaving.
ReplyDeleteI have never liked his meta episodes, and although I can't remember all the ones he wrote, I believe there are many I didn't like, made exception for Bad Day at Black Rock and Monster Movie, which I loved.
Change is always beneficial; they got rid of poor Sera so I suppose he can go too.
I'm not attached to names anyway. It's the end result of an episode that counts, not the name of the writer.
I really hope not :(
ReplyDeleteSome of my favorite eps have been Edlund ones and how do you get a good end result without a good script. The writers put the words into the characters.
ReplyDeleteI never said that there shouldn't be good scripts.
ReplyDeleteWhat I'm saying is that just because you have a "big name" writing the script doesn't automatically mean that they will produce a great episode, and for me some of his work hasnn't been very good, eg Wishful Thinking, The Third Man and Ghostfacers to name a few.
A pool of good writers doesn't necessarily have to contain famous names to produce good work.
Has to be a mix up. We would have known about Edlund leaving alot sooner. Especially now with it being it three-four weeks before the 8th season production starts.
ReplyDeleteAnd why would Edlund be speaking for Blacker or even bring his name up? Also "moving on" seems like something someone would say if they were a writer for the show for one season. Not 6 seasons.
Joining the chorus of "Noooooooooo!"
ReplyDeleteBen Endlund is a talented writer. I hope it'a a false info. We need writers who knows the show and it's mythology.
Endlund and Carver=wining team!
Oh no!! :( I'm really hoping this is a mistake cuz Sera and Ben have been the best writers this season and loosing both at once will be hard. Ben is definately my favourite writer of SPN along with Jeremy Carver so here i was all excited for next season having them both together on the writing team, despite my major disppointment with S7... praying that it's just a mistake.
ReplyDeleteWow... I tend to love Ben Edlund's episodes, so this is pretty sad news :(
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing this rumor is false. Ben Acker and Ben Blacker have already left the show. It seems reasonable that this is what they are talking about. However if it is true, I'm in the minority. I would be fine with it. While I thoroughly enjoyed Edlund at the beginning of his time with SPN, most of his later stuff is on my worst of list.
ReplyDeleteI can't see Edlund leaving.
ReplyDeleteI hope that it is a mix up, like alot of other people have said it seems odd that it is edlund and blacker, not acker and blacker, acker and blacker only wrote one episode. It also seems odd that he would leave now considering that he should have already renewed his contract and if he wasnt coming back it would already have been news because shouldnt season 8 for the writers already have started. I would hate for ben edlund to leave, he's so irrestitably wacky. i love his eps so much!
ReplyDeleteIt wouldn't bother me either.
ReplyDeleteI'd be fine with it too.
ReplyDeleteBen Blacker I can live without.... but Edlund?! No freakin' way!!!
ReplyDelete(though I had a feeling something might be up... in the last few episodes of the season he had a "consultant" credit....)
Edlund is very hit and miss for me, I prefer his earlier work on the show. For the past 3 seasons I think his writing has been quite weak at times. I pretty much feel the same about SG. Besides I like the idea of JC bringing in his own writing team, working with writers he is more comfortable with and can have a better I suppose control over.
ReplyDeletewhats with all these people coming and going on the show
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you have said, and especially with the fact of Carver bringing in collaborators that he might be more comfortable with.
ReplyDeleteI know nothing, but I get the impression that Edlund is very much an individualist, creatively speaking, of course.
Hey, Ben Blacker just tweeted clarifying which Bens are leaving the show
ReplyDelete@BenBlacker SPN fans: your wires are crossed. @bnacker and I have left the show. Edlund is staying. They need his magical brain!
Huh, I can't say that I'm terribly surprised by this but I wouldn't have expected Edlund to be one of those to be leaving. He is definitely needed as he is one of the few writers who have been there from almost the beginning...I mean Carver will need writers who really know the ins and outs of the characters.
ReplyDeleteAnd Ben Acker just confirmed:
ReplyDelete@bnacker
s'true SPNsters. @BenBlacker + I are moving on. we leave it all to @benackerer and @BenBlackerer. i look fwd to their episode! #SeaMonsters
I'm glad that Edlund is staying, he impacts much more than just the episodes he's credited as writing.
NOT true. Just confirmed on Twitter by Blacker. Ben Blacker and Ben Acker are leaving. Edlund is staying.
ReplyDeleteHey thanks for the update. I agree about your assessment re: Edlund
ReplyDeleteHappy to say it was a case of people getting their Ben's crossed... It's Ben Blacker & Ben Acker who are leaving (they just confirmed via twitter)
ReplyDeleteYeh! Confirmed :) Thank God!
ReplyDeleteToo bad.
ReplyDeleteI think that Carver would have been more than capable of doing the job on his own, as I'm sure he knows the characters as well as, if not better than Edlund does.
Edlund tends to go over the top sometimes
However, Season eight will reveal all, and I for one can't wait!
You're welcome! I was really glad to see that tweet come across my timeline! I was very lucky to meet Edlund at a small panel (hosted by Acker, if my memory serves) and I was very impressed. I think he has a lot to do with the type of people we get on the show (he's really emphatic about the importance of being nice), and that we'd really miss him if he left.
ReplyDeleteJust as we thought. Its better this way.
ReplyDeleteHa, not surprised this was false since it was mentioned before who was leaving.
ReplyDeleteI love Edlund's drama episodes, especially ones with Cas involved so I'm really happy he'll still be around though I don't like his over the top comedies.
Carver will be doing his own job. Edlund will write his 4 episodes. Edlund will have some input but it will be Carver's vision.
ReplyDeleteThere's a reason why they went and got Jeremy Carver to run the show and didn't let Dabb & Loffin.
In my ideal world, there would be a major overhaul of writers. (See you Dabb & Lolfin and almost everyone new except Robbie Thompson.) Carver would get a team that works well together and has a common vision for the show. The first two weeks they would watch every single episode together and compare notes. Afterwards they would devote several days to brainstorming the characters so that everyone has a common foundation of who these characters are, how they respond, and what makes them tick. This foundation would be rock solid and no one's individual episodes could deviate from this foundation without major discussion from everyone and a plan on how to make whatever this deviation is believable to the audience. Only then should they have even started to think about planning for season 8. It sometimes feels that this show takes a plot idea and runs with it and then figures out the characters as a secondary issue which leads to people feeling like there's no episode flow.
ReplyDeleteGood news for me, thanks for the update.
ReplyDeleteOh that is awesome that you were able to meet him. He is an incredible writer and is truly needed on Supernatural now more than ever I think
ReplyDeleteI loved Edlund's earlier stuff, so I'm glad he's staying and I hope he can adjust to Jeremy Carver's vision. Lately he's been writing the Cas stuff so I haven't been as interested in his eps. I probably won't miss Acker and Blacker so much. They were really hit and miss with most of them being misses. Carver has every right to clean house -- it's his baby now. He needs writers he can work with and depend on to carry his mythology through.
ReplyDeleteEdlund's alright but he is too much into the Dean/Castiel stuff. The Long Distance Marriage comment and Dean's your like a brother to me. IMO his writing at times has encouraged alot of the destiel idea .
ReplyDeleteI enjoy some of his writing but not all of it but would of been surprised if he had left.
Well, he also wrote Hello Cruel World, How to win friends & influence monsters or Repo Man this season... Neither of them had much to do with Cas except for some mention maybe... He really only wrote two heavy Cas episodes, which I personally loved but I understand that if someone doesn't like the character they may not like it, but his work has not centered only on Cas lately, lol.
ReplyDeleteKnew this had to be a mixup. So glad Edlund is staying! I love his eps, especially his Dean and Cas stuff. :) He gets that Dean can actually love people/have people in his life besides Sam.
ReplyDeleteYes yes he does it is a pity then that nobody think's in that writers room that Sam also should have someone in his life beside Dean
ReplyDeleteI'd love it if Sam had someone in his life besides Dean. But I find it weird that some fans are constantly pissing and moaning about the Dean/Cas friendship as if it somehow takes away from the bond between Sam and Dean. One has nothing to do with the other. Castiel was barely in this season, and Sam and Dean still lacked brotherly moments and their former closeness. It has nothing to do with Castiel or the friendship between Dean and Castiel, it has to do with the writing, and yet Castiel still gets blamed. It's irrational.
ReplyDeleteWell I disagree with the one has nothing to do with the other .My issue with Castiel is more to do with the characters place on the show in the sl than anything but pissing and moaning has you put it is your way of looking at it but others feel differently in this and may feel a reason to do so.
ReplyDeleteThe only reason I'm excited for season 8 is that with Sam and Dean being separated for at least some time it will hopefully finally allow Sam to have POV, interactions and relationships outside of Dean. This is potentially going to be a very good thing for Sam and Sam fans that is if the writers can be bothered. There is huge potential for Sam to make connections, friends, become a person outside of just a victim or just Dean's little brother. He's gotten over the hardest things he possibly can, that anyone possibly can and he's all the stronger for all those experiences. Now is the time for the writers to recognise that and allow Sam to grow as a person, as a hunter, as an individual. Hopefully we'll see Sam take control of the situation, show his smarts, his hunting prowess, lead the rescue mission to save his brother. I hope JC seizes this opportunity with Sam. Personally I love the idea of Sam getting to work with others, maybe getting a new hunting partner even if it is only for a little while.
ReplyDeleteHow can you not like Ghostfacers? That's like blasphemy.
ReplyDeleteI am into season 6 with my marathon and just finished one of Ben's eps and my favorite fun one. The French Mistake, makes me grin from start to finish. lol
ReplyDeleteI don't usually say I hate anything about a show, but I hate anything with the Ghostfacers in it. Totally turns me off. ;)
ReplyDeleteI'd add Adam Glass to the list as well, if we are talking specific writers. I do think they may need to replace much of the wrting team, but I think Carver may want to get a handle on the series before he makes sweeping changes.
ReplyDeleteI didn't like the plothole at the end of the episode with Cas having the weapons and not using them against Raphael... though I blame it more on the whole thing not being followed in later episodes in order to make the ending they wanted work... I still think it would have made more sense plotwise if Cas would have lost the weapons in that episode, but whatever... As far as meta and fun episode goes, it's definately one of my faves!
ReplyDeleteI DO definately wold like to see that. IDK if you watch "Being Human" but Jeremy Carver is really good there at giving his three main characters individual stories and relationships with outside characters that contribute greatly to their development, while still keeping the beautiful and a deep bond
ReplyDeletebetween the three protagonists as the heart of the show. I really would love for him to bring some of this to SPN.
Plus I love the action on that show. There's a lot, and it's dark.
ReplyDeleteThank you Lord that was just a false rumor. Love the episodes Edlund ... Whew!! I was tense when I read!!! :]
ReplyDeleteTrue. And the stories make sense and come to a conclusion for all 3 characters, that's another plus haha.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I love the idea of Carver as the showrunner, what I don't like so much is that Edlund's four episodes probably means that all four will be Castiel episodes, and I'm just fed up with the continual re-cycling of this character.
ReplyDeleteHe went from warrior angel to hippie to healer and now he's back to powerful angel.
The writers have to keep coming up with ways to include him in the story-line when he is no longer essential to SPN, and it's just getting annoying.
yipee! Confetti it's a parade!
ReplyDeleteExactly! He is the best for the cas and Dean stuff. He also write great brotherly moments.
ReplyDeleteThat scared the crap out of me!!
ReplyDeleteTHANK GODS FOR THIS. Season 8 wouldn't be the same without Edlund.
ReplyDeleteWhat a relief! The show would not be the same without them and we certainly cannot have that. Bring on season 8!
ReplyDeleteStrange how people's opinions can vary so greatly. I loved Ghostfacers, and most of Ben's episodes. I'm glad to hear he's not leaving.
ReplyDelete
