Suits - Episode 2.01 - She Knows - Advance Review by Joshua

One year ago I was given the privilege of watching the pilot for a new show in advance of its airing. That show was called Suits. For me, it was an instant hit; humorous, fast-paced but above all it had an excellent cast. This year, I’ve once again been treated to an advance viewing of the Season Two premiere, so here is my spoiler-free review.
Catch Suits Season 2 Premiere tonight June 14 on USA, 10/9C.

At the end of Season One...
The Season One finale left us with a great cliffhanger to keep us excited for Season Two. Following their kiss, Rachel left Mike a voicemail declaring that she “can’t go back”, but this was unfortunately picked up by Trevor. Trevor was unaware that Mike and Jenny were together, so in his anger he turned up at the office to speak to Jessica about a secret of Mike’s, “something Harvey Specter hasn’t told you”.

She Knows
Because I don’t want to give too much away ahead of tonight’s episode, I will keep my review brief and spoiler-free. The episode picks up right where Season One left off; without saying too much, the episode opens with Jessica and Mike sharing a meal to discuss Mike’s career. She knows something, but what was it that Trevor told her? The meal was a great opportunity to see some time with this pairing, which we haven’t had much chance to see in Season One. Gina Torres portrays Jessica’s intelligence and strength excellently, as you always feel like there’s a lot going on in her mind.

In the course of the episode, we have a great chance to see how much Mike has developed over the first season as he focuses on what may be his last case; it’s clear he has learned a lot from Harvey, but will he truly be able to ignore his softer side and be cold like Harvey? Speaking of Harvey, we’re treated to some excellent moments where we get to see the more emotional side of man beneath the silk facade. There’s also an excellent scene with his assistant Donna, a personal favourite character of mine.

The episode creates a new dynamic that will be key for the rest of the season; the presence of the “Hardman” in “Pearson Hardman”. Who is this mysterious person we have yet to meet, who we have only heard the surname of? Will they be returning to the firm? What energy will they bring to the show (i.e. are they protagonistic or antagonistic)? Suffice it to say, I foresee a lot of great stories coming as a result of this storyline.

In summary, the episode was one of Suits’s finest; it had all of the wonderful relationships and punchy writing that makes the show a gem, and manages to set up a new feel to the show to truly differentiate it from Season One.

Don’t miss it on USA tonight, 10/9C.
