Her confusion over how to operate a car was hilarious. Of course, she's from 65 years into the future, but damn. Alec's fondness of her is cute.
I liked the second episode. I can kind of sympathize with the reason why Liber8 is doing what they're doing, but they are also killing people without a second thought. The ends does not justify the means.
Not as good as the pilot, but still pretty good. I do like the little comedic touches like with not knowing about cars, but I think that they could've left that out as it's not too believable that although she might figure out how to start a car, knowing how to drive that car in a city without knowing the traffic rules and not drawing any attention to yourself is a stretch - unless you're a terminator.. ido hope that we'l get to see more backstory on the "gang" and that they're more than just their the "classic bad guys", which is ok for now, but they don't want to keep this up for too many eps or it'll get over the top imho.. still a great 2nd ep that will keep me coming back.
I honestly thought it was better than the pilot, which was pretty great. I think the writing was a lot better here, and I loved the comedic touches such as Kiera not knowing how to work a car. I didn't think much of Carlos in the pilot, but I did like him more in this episode. Alec's pretty great, too. The ending was perfect.
The guy was right when he handed her the tech in the future, she's nothing without it. The taciturn face and feats of the impossible suit is not growing on me. I'll give it one more episode to see if she gets some sort of personality, but the action isn't good enough to hold up to the complete lack of dialogue. The kid has to prompt her to talk more than once. Sheesh. Plus, they should have still set it in the future a little bit, because one kid in Canada isn't up to this sort of technology and slang and everything else wouldn't have changed and been forgotten in +60 years. The fish out of water stuff seems really forced to get a laugh.
I didn't get that her suit was broken. It was still doing the color change pants thing and all the tech in her head is still working? But losing her gun would explain her not being able broad side of a barn in the firefight. On one hand I'd like to see it broken because it has to smell by now and she has no skills without it, but on the other she has no skills without it. She can't even invent a cover story on her own--how unimaginative can you be and still catch bad guys--or realize that she has no credentials, so she can't just go walking into a police operation without some sort of plan? She needs to be smarter than this, instead they are relying on the computer and the kid to feed her every single thought. Take that away and they either give her a brain of her own or she just sits there like a unplugged toaster.
Wow you're really ripping into this, so I'll return the favor.
It is in no way surprising that she relies on her tech. When was the last time you watched any Science Fiction show set in the future?
It's a well known fact that as we develop new technology we rely on it more. Is it a bad thing? Only if you're one of those people who is stuck in the past. I personally don't see it as a bad thing. Throughout human history we have used new technology to make things easier. Now we're in an age where we are developing new technology at a startling pace. Just the advancements we've made in the last 10 years is incredible.
You seem to think she's useless without it. She may very well be, but it won't be a permanent state of being. She'll adapt to her new surroundings eventually. You get stuck 65 years in the past and see if you handle things any better.
As for the comment about Alec feeding her thoughts, that's just stupid. Right at this very moment can you think back 65 years and know exactly how to act, how to dress, and how to talk to people? She didn't even know what a superior officer was because they weren't called that in her time.
We only got a brief glimpse into the future but anyone who was actually paying attention could tell it's not a future of freedom. Even Liber8 is so desperate for liberty that they would kill anyone to get it.
I'm almost certain your problem is that you're taking this show, and especially Kyra, at face value and you're not thinking about the stuff that could make her that way. She'll adapt and become used to 2012, but I think you need to lay off a bit and think your opinions on her through a lot more, because you're ignoring SO much in order to justify thinking this woman is an idiot.
And I hope she doesn't lose her tech. In almost every time traveling piece of entertainment, the person sent back in time loses all of their tech. That's extremely boring.
In conclusion, I think you're looking for a reason to hate this character, and to do so you're not thinking it all through. ALL of the reasons you think she's a moron can be explained away by anyone who paid attention to the pilot.
Wow. Thanks. But one of my points is that 65 years isn't long enough to totally erase slang and common sense. "Superior officer" is a self-explanatory phrase. She still speaks English. And she's like 30 so she grew up with some fraction of those years of "changes." The kid in her ear was alive then and he is still on the cutting edge of tech in the future so there can't have been that significant of an evolution. Guns still shoot projectiles and you still need to actually hit the thing you are aiming at. 65 years ago was 1947. We watch movies from 1947, books are still circulation from 1947, my house was built before that, you can buy and drive cars made before then. All cars wouldn't have been gone in 65 years. Antiques are what 50 years old, so keys probably still exist too. It isn't like she went 300 years into the future and it isn't like 65 years was that long ago. I would think that based on context and basic cultural knowledge I could handle some slang. Restoration England--tricky, 1947 not so bad. Not to mention the fact that she doesn't seem to know anything about her political history. You think in 65 years you won't know what the CIA is? Even if they were gone, I think someone would have brought it up in a high school history class. I mean her grandparents who could still be alive and remember it might have told her a story or two. But even if I accept all that and go "Okay, silly premise she goes back in time and doesn't know how anything works, but the bad guys are doing just fine." She is a "sorta" police officer, so she should be able to think quickly, pick up clues, see patterns, figure out criminals next move, etc. We expect those basic traits in any police procedural. She doesn't observe and detect, and frankly I expect my detectives to do that.
I feel like she checked out, she wasn't waiting and observing to try and fit in, she was in sleep mode until the kid in her ear prompted her to talk (more than once in 2 episodes). Even if she was completely confused, she could have been engaged in the situation. Because I'm not sure how they can expect the audience to be engaged if the main character isn't. So, yes, I will give you that I didn't pay super close attention to the pilot or the 2nd episode because I was bored at the complete lack of dialogue and personality of the protagonist and my brain started to wander. But I'm not looking for reasons to hate her, these are the reasons I don't like her. If they change that...like they break the suit or she starts talking and investigating and picking up on the world around her, then maybe I'll reconsider. Like I said. I'll give it one more episode to see if it finds it's feet.
Okay, so she's got a kid and husband back home, we get the message, geez. To be honest, I really hope this isn't just week-in/week-out of Kiera near-missing the bad guys. I want some future stuff. I want to know more about Future Alex's involvment and how Kiera's husband was clearly in on the plot, because of his reaction when he realised Kiera was about to be sent back in time. All in all it's quite a good show, and I plan on sticking with it for now, but please go easy on the 'I have a husband and child' stuff. It's snoozeworthy.
Also... Are we really to believe she learned how to drive a car in the space of 5 minutes? Bullshit.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
I hope the fish-out-of-water subplot is done with.

Great episode can't wait for more. Kiera hilarious try to make the car works. Alec is really good character. Looking foward for the next episode.

ReplyDeleteIs the suit not kaput due to the failed time travelling. I could be wrong but I thought her gun and suit were broken after the explosion.
