ReplyDeleteI still can't process the fact that Bored to Death was cancelled. This was certainly this season's most painful cancellation. Well, at least the show lives on on Blu-ray with 24 episodes of pure pleasure (well, maybe 19-20 episodes, I'm not a big fan of approximately half of the episodes of season 1).
And the best part is that I can safely buy the Blu-rays from amazon.com. The image & sound on HBO Blu-ray releases are always stellar, they're always Region Free (except the Deadwood complete series Blu-ray box set, sadly) and they always have metropolitan French subtitles — not that the written Québecois French is vastly different from the Français French, it's the same 93.33% of the time, but I've noticed the translation is often more literal, in some cases the phrasing looks very much like the English phrasing (not word for word, but you can tell) and it can be surprising. Also, I've come across certain curse words (many coming from the vocabulary of the church) like ostie, crisse or calice which can take you off the film/series. And the exclamation/interrogation points are stuck to the last word of the sentences, like in every other language in the world (and I for one like my space !), but that particular detail is not a bother at all.
I don't know if the audio is Québecois French, I've never tried and I don't have box sets around me to check (I wouldn't be surprised if it is, Canada is the reason why HBO puts French audio/subtitles on their box sets, that's not for us in Europe or Africa), but frankly I don't care, it's been a very long time since I've purposely activated the French audio track on a foreign-language film/series. As long as a Blu-ray box set is Region Free and has metropolitan French subtitles, it has my attention and my wallet's attention, which is 99% of the time with HBO — I only buy if there's French subtitles, not that I desperately need them (e.g : Curb your Enthusiasm is very easy to watch without subtitles (except when Leon talks :D)) but it's always better, and you never know with whom you're going to watch.
No remorse in buying on amazon.com as I know the Blu-ray sets of Bored to Death won't get released here (seasons 1 and 2 are only available in DVD here). Comedy series in general never get Blu-ray releases in France, and that's a damn shame. Nurse Jackie and the first season of Weeds are the only exceptions. I've noticed TV show editors tend to release Blu ray sets mostly for action, historical and sci-fi series, but comedies can benefit from Blu-ray as well, damn it !
I'll wait until next fall, then I'll order the third season of Bored to Death, and the second season (which I haven't purchased yet) too, plus Eastbound and Down seasons 2 & 3 (I imagine the last season of this amazing comedy will be released sometime in September-October as well), Curb your Enthusiasm season 8 (DVD only, sadly) and Entourage season 8 (I didn't like it, I actually loathe the series finale, but I have the first seven seasons already, it would be weird not to buy the last one).
