-Ratings Breakdown:
Fox was the dominant player on this first Wednesday in May with a 11.1 rating/18 share in the overnights from 8-10 p.m. Comparably, however, that was down by 23 percent from the year-ago one hour telecast (14.4/22 on 5/04/11 from 8-9 p.m.). The half-hour breakdown is as follows:
American Idol (Fox)
8:00 p.m.: 10.3/17 (#1)
8:30 p.m.: 11.3/18 (#1)
9:00 p.m.: 11.3/18 (#1)
9:30 p.m.: 11.6/18 (#1)
Survivor: One World on CBS was on the map, with a second-place 6.3/10 at 8 p.m. Comparably, that was just five percent below the year-ago edition themed Redemption Island (6.6/10 on 5/04/11). Criminal Minds on the Eye net at 9 p.m. also finished second, but it was below average at a 7.3/12 -- 17 percent beneath the 8.8/13 one year earlier. Granddaddy CSI capped off the night for CBS with a first-place 6.3/11 at 10 p.m.
Modern Family on ABC, of course, was the standout at a second-place 7.3/11 in the overnights at 9 p.m. And that will translate into a solid performance among adults 18-49. But week four of lead-out Don’t Trust the B____ in Apartment 23 slipped to a 4.2/ 7 at 9:30 p.m. (#3) -- down 42 percent from Modern Family. Former time period occupant Cougar Town was slightly higher at a 4.5/ 7 on 5/04/11. Revenge at 10 p.m., which is a shoo-in for renewal, perked up to a second-place 5.3/ 9 at 10 p.m.
Earlier in the evening on ABC was reliable The Middle (#3: 5.0/ 8 at 8 p.m.) and freshman Suburgatory (#3: 4.4/ 7 at 8:30 p.m.), which built from short-lived year-ago occupant Better With You (4.0/ 6 on 5/04/11) by 10 percent. Chances are Suburgatory will see a second season.
Elsewhere, a second episode of Betty White’s Off Their Rockers was an improvement from recent failed occupant BFF at 8:30 p.m., but NBC is still a shambles in midweek. The Off Their Rockers double-pop finished fourth in the 8 p.m. hour with an average 3.4/ 6 (8:00 pm.: 3.5/ 6; 8:30 p.m.: 3.3/ 5), and that was up by 48 percent from year-ago game show Minute to Win It (2.3/ 4 on 5/04/11). Next on NBC was struggling Rock Center With Brian Williams (#4: 2.9/ 5 at 9 p.m.), followed by tired Law & Order: SVU at a third-place 4.5/ 8 at 10 p.m. Compared to one year earlier (6.3/10 on 5/04/11), SVU dipped by 29 percent. Had NBC been in better shape, there is no reason to believe SVU would be returning.
Over at The CW, an encore telecast of Canadian drama The L.A. Complex (#5: 0.6/ 1 at 8 p.m.) led into a 1.0/ 2 (#5) for declining America’s Next Top Model at 9 p.m., which dropped by a significant 44 percent from the year-ago evening (1.8/ 3 on 5/04/11). Like SVU, Top Model would not be on the schedule next season if The CW doing better. The CW will announce its fall schedule exactly two weeks from today.
