-Ratings Breakdown:
Erosion was the common observation last night, with each of the five broadcast networks down in the overnights from the comparable year-ago period. CBS won the evening with its combination of NCIS (#1: 11.0 rating/18 share), spin-off NCIS: Los Angeles (#2: 9.4/14), which featured the conclusion of the Hawaii Five-O crossover, and on-the-fence Unforgettable (#1: 7.7/11). Unforgettable, which is not expected back, concludes next Tuesday. And the two CBS shows making guest appearances did not make much of a difference from a ratings standpoint.
In season-finale news, a one-hour edition of The Biggest Loser on NBC (which should not expand back to two-hours next season), rose to a season-high (and second-place) 5.2/ 9 at 8 p.m. Comparably, that was right on par with the year-ago telecast (which averaged 7.52 million viewers and a 2.7/ 8 among adults 18-49 on 5/03/11, according to the Live Plus Same Day results).
Next on NBC was The Voice, which finished third in the 9 p.m. hour with a 5.9/ 9, followed by non-scripted dud Fashion Star at a 3.0/ 5 (#3) at 10 p.m. While the live Voice results show continues to deliver, the performance show one year earlier in the time period was considerably stronger at an 8.1/13 in the overnights on 5/03/11.
In week two news, Canadian drama The L.A. Complex on The CW dipped to a mere 0.4/ 1 at 9 p.m., which was 33 percent below its historically low 0.6/ 1 opener one week earlier. That performance translated into 630,000 viewers with a 0.3/ 1 among adults 18-49, according to the Live Plus Same Day results. And the overnight retention out of lead-in 90210 (#5: 1.1/ 2 at 8 p.m.) was 36 percent. Just how low will this go?
The live Dancing With the Stars Results Show was the ABC standout, of course, with a dominant 10.4/16 in the overnights. And that, comparably, built from lead-in Cougar Town (#4: 3.6/ 6 at 8:30 p.m.) by 189 percent. If anything, Melissa Gilbert surviving the week (and not even landing in the bottom two) proves the viewers have more impact on the voting than the judges. Take that, Bruno!
Earlier in the evening on ABC was sure-to-be renewed sitcom Last Man Standing with a 4.6/ 7 (#3t) at 8 p.m. Relocated Private Practice at 10 p.m., meanwhile, finished second with a 5.7/10 (and retention of just 53 percent out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of Dancing With the Stars – 10.8/16). Rumor has it ABC will be renewing the Grey’s Anatomy spin-off for a final 13 episodes.
Elsewhere, deteriorating Glee on Fox (#3: 4.7/ 7) dropped by 27 percent from the year-ago evening (6.4/10 on 5/03/11). And the ongoing losses could mean Fox will move Glee to another time period next season. Next was freshman sitcom New Girl (#4: 3.7/ 6 at 9 p.m.), which lost steam as the season progressed, followed by an encore telecast of New Girl at a 2.3/ 3 at 9:30 p.m. (#4).
