Castle - Season 5 - Andrew Marlowe Q and A

Thanks to FringeWatch for sending us the following..

So, you finally put Castle and Beckett together. Why was now the time?
Andrew W. Marlowe: Ultimately, you get to a fork in the road. If we kept them apart any longer, say another season — after what Castle had put on the table at the end of last season — in my mind, that would have been the death of the series. Then, we would have just been being artificial. They would have become brother and sister, and then we're just ignoring everything that had happened. There comes a point where you have to confront it. ... We wanted to get the point where we resolved it and made a promise for next season that these two are going to have to be dealing with their feelings for one another.

Of course, we didn't see whatever was about to happen in that bedroom. Are you planning to pull a fast one next season?
Marlowe: I have no intention of pulling the rug out from the audience. I think that when that scene ends, everybody is clear on what's about to happen. We don't need to see it, but we know it's going to happen.

So to be clear, there won't be an urgent phone call that Castle's mom has been in an accident or something like that?
Marlowe: No. I think we need to get to the other side of the storytelling. I think we've played the interruptions as much as we possibly can. And I think we're really interested to see what's going to happen with these two. What does that relationship look like? This is going to allow us to reembrace some of the fun, because relationships are tricky things and they don't always go the way you want them to.

  5. You know what would be phenomenally hot and then wickedly funny for the premiere. It opens in the bedroom with Beckett and Castle either waking up or engaging in some making out, and then...we hear a soft girlish voice calling out, "Dad? DAD, you home?" And scrambling to get clothes on. LMAO.

  8. I think they were already well into artificial and had pretty much killed the UST stone dead with the last 13 eps, so it's good to hear they're not going to pull them apart in 501 and spend the year putting them back together. That is if Marlowe is telling the truth, which I'm not willing to put my faith in again after he  promised "there's no going back,we're moving the island" after last year's finale and then gave us zero movement between Cops & Robbers and the douchebag arc. And that bit of stupidity turned me so off both characters that I was far less excited to see them together than I should have been.

If I could, I would force-feed Marlowe season 1 & 2 for the rest of the summer so that he can remember what made this show fly to begin with, and it's not the albatross of conspiracy. *That* was organic growth, slow, but steady enough that I was over-the-moon excited for every ep. All the characters were sparklier, the cases were intruiging, the victims and relatives all memorable. Get back to that, but with Beckett and Castle trying to figure out a real relationship, and I'll happily eat crow next year.

  9. Even better would be if Alexis moved into her dad;s bedroom after knocking while saying "Good morning dad...oh and Beckett." and then closing the door again. I think Alexis for sure wouldnt be fazed by seeing Beckett there tho.

  11. I won't address all of that -- to each her own, and all, and actually season 2 is my favorite as well.  But, "zero movement between Cops & Robbers and the douchebag arc"?  You've just counted out "Kill Shot," "Cuffed" (!), "Til Death Do Us Part," "The Blue  Butterfly," "Pandora," "Linch-pin"...
I'll grant it was sometimes subtle, (except in "Cuffed," which was the shipper episode of shipper episodes), but all through that span they were still moving.   This _whole_ season has led up to that moment last night when Beckett finally realized Castle matters more to her than pursuing her mom's murderer.  That was huge, and could only happen after these months of coming to terms with her own shooting, realizing the depth of her own feelings for Castle, seeing reminders around her of how beautiful a lasting relationship could be, recognizing all the things that have been holding her back, and finally seeing that if she didn't make a choice, she would lose Castle for good and maybe lose a lot more.  It might be a less 'sparkly' sort of plot, but back in season one, they set up Beckett's mother's murder as the one thing that's been driving her all this time, and the biggest thing that's been in the way of a real relationship.  How could they not address that?    Actually, my one real complaint for season 4 was that they have STILL not done anything at all interesting with Gates's character.  23 Episodes in, she's still just the disapproving and irritable boss-lady, and that's all we know about her.  I miss Roy Montgomery horribly!   The 12th Precinct just hasn't felt quite like home, since he's been gone.

  12. I like that Marlowe is ruling out Beckett's mother's case as a way of bringing her back to the force because it's too conventional.  I really hope the way they choose to resolve this genuinely surprises me.

  13. It'S gonna be very intersting to see castle and beckett as a couple now! , there's so many storylines yet to tell.
Season 5 is gonna be different, and i like it!
So what?? Beckett's mother case is over? Kate is done trying to figure out who killed her mother? She's not gonna fight anymore to put the man who shot her in jail for good??
Or did i get it wrong??

  14.  Beckett's mother's case will continue and I'm sure Kate will be involved.  I think what is meant here is that Beckett will no longer allow her mother's murder to become the obsession that isolated her and completely ruled her life.  The first step to that was letting go of her pursuit of the case (at least temporarily) and choosing Castle over her obsession.
