Fox has pulled the plug on its pricey prehistoric drama Terra Nova after one moderately rated season, TVLine has learned.
The show is currently being shopped to other networks by Twentieth Television.

Bummer but not exactly a surprise. FOX better hope for new shows that do a whole lot better next season.

ReplyDeleteFrankly I'm glad it's done on FOX. Maybe Fringe will get one more season and Alcatraz will get renewed now.I hope Terra Nova is picked up by another network for the fans it has.
The number were not bad and if these channels gave series 2nd seasons you would have more people watching. Many won't even bother with a new series because it just gets canceled. I'm about at that point with Fox, I'm not going to even watch a program on FOX unless it has a 2nd season.

ReplyDeleteIt's an understatement to say I won't miss it. More money to keep financing Fringe, I say.
ReplyDeleteNow it'll be a toss up between Touch and Alcatraz for the renewal : Alcatraz has disappointed ratings-wise in the last few weeks (can't say the show is very exciting either, it's certainly much better than Terra Nova but TN was very lame, it's not hard to top), so if Touch is a success (the preview got great ratings and when the season starts in 2 weeks after American Idol, it's likely to garner great ratings as well), it's likely that FOX will choose the Kiefer Sutherland drama rather than the other one.
Now that Terra Nova is out of the equation (House ending this May doesn't factor in, imo), there's 4 possibilities :
1/ Fringe + Touch + Alcatraz renewed : unrealistic.
2/ Fringe + Touch renewed (Alcatraz shut down) : realistic.
3/ Alcatraz + Touch renewed (Fringe cancelled) : I don't think so !
4/ Fringe + Alcatraz + Touch cancelled : Are you kidding me ?
If Touch doesn't bomb, with the rumors of Fringe getting a final 15-episode fifth season, I think option 2 is the right one, and I most certainly would agree with it. Besides, 15 episodes is the same amount of episodes as the possible Kevin Williamson-Kevin Bacon thriller, both shows produced by Warner Bros. Well, that's probably a coincidence, I can't imagine FOX pairing their biggest pilot with a very low-rated show.
Not surprised. It had a great premise but focused on the weaker members of the cast and the weakest links in the story.

ReplyDeleteI think option #1 is possible, but only possible if Fringe is renewed for 15 episodes run off at beginning of season with either Alcatraz or a new series being a late mid-season premiere after Fringe finishes up.
ReplyDeleteFox seems to have success with Touch doing an early sneak peek and then starting it about 15 episodes into Fringe's run. So I think it is possible they could repeat that formula next season.
Partly wishful thinking of course since I like all 3 shows (Touch less so), but sometimes if networks find a formula that leads to a success they will repeat it later.....
I'll take option two to go please!
ReplyDeleteIt will be very hard for TOUCH to fail. Fox moved it to the post-Idol time-slot which means that not only does the network have a lot of faith in it, they also gave it the best lead-in on television which I am sure will benefit the series.

ReplyDeleteThey had to, The Finder was flailing badly, Alcatraz has fallen below 2.0 and is becoming the next Flashforward/Event where it starts out ok and then keeps dropping to cancellation territory.
ReplyDeleteAll Touch needs to do is not fail as badly as The Finder or Alcatraz, it can even be renewed a la V or Body of Proof as a saving grace for the network's new drama show of the season to save face from a total loss.
I wonder if it'll be another banner year at FOX where they just pull the plug on all their bubble dramas. I am so sick of the network. (And frankly, I'm still ridiculously bitter about Lie To Me getting canceled, to bring these shows on the air, just to cancel them too.....)

ReplyDeleteYes indeed, that's possible that Alcatraz could get renewed as well. By renewing it for a second season (most likely a 12/13-episode order like season 1), FOX execs would keep a JJ Abrams show on their network, since Fringe would be ending in early 2013 — season 5 would run from mid-September to late January, followed from early February to mid-May by a new show with a 13-episode order.
ReplyDeleteBut the real question is : are Friday nights truly reanimated, like FOX wanted them to be ? When Fringe is over, will they launch new scripted shows on that night ? I'm not sure.
They're keeping Fringe there because the show can't get anywhere else in the lineup, because it has a past (4 seasons), belongs to the sci-fi genre and because it has great reviews and a big fan base, but they never meant for it to be on Fridays at first, the same way they never meant for The Finder to end up there (and that show, btw, will inevitably get cancelled, even if it gets better ratings than its upcoming lead-out Fringe).
But if Touch is successful and if FOX has great pilots, they will have a choice to make. And if there's a choice to be made, when you compare Fringe's loyal fan base since 2008 (+ Warner willing to pay some of FOX's share to keep the show going for one last shortened round) to freshman Alcatraz's audience fading away week after week (slipping to a 1.8 rating on the 18-49 demo eight days ago), I say the odds are in favor of Fringe. But like I said, keeping JJ on the network might be important enough for them to renew both Fringe and Alcatraz.
They aren't obligated to renew both shows, NBC canceled Undercovers last year, I think.
ReplyDeleteI stopped watching Alcatraz to finish it over the summer, I'd rather keep up with a few other shows. But I hope FOX renews Touch, Alcatraz, and Fringe. They have no supernatural pilots in development and should show patience if they want to build viewer trust.

I always feel it's unfair when they take a show off too soon without giving it at least a couple of years to find its feet.
The thing is, these new shows are introduced on to networks around the world as great new American tv series then, poof, they get cancelled.
At the moment here we have Alcatraz touted as the latest, greatest new one and it goes out in real time with the US.. Actually we had the episode aired before you last week when the US had Daytona.
Anyway,I know, I know, it's all about the money and advertising! :(

ReplyDeleteThis is true but NBC didn't have another Abrams show on the network, FOX does. They wouldn't want to sour the creative relationship they have with J.J. Abrams because they could potentially miss out on much more profitable shows from him in the future.

ReplyDeleteI'd pitch for #1 or #3!! Is it that unlikely that FOX will renew Alcatraz? I hope they give Fringe a last 15-ep season, which would be the last sci-fi we'd see on FOX besides Alcatraz. If they don't renew Alcatraz, even for half a season, all FOX will have will be comedies and light procedurals.... They need to keep a cult show. Alcatraz isn't doing that bad, right?? Considering it shouldn't be a very expensive show, they could very well make it happen for both Fringe and Alcatraz giving them both a short season. I'm OK with short seasons, cable show are often 12 or 13 episode shows and they manage to tell the story decently, create momentum and leave fans excited for a new season. So if sci-fi's only hope on network TV is to have short seasons, then that's fine with me! I just think it would be very sad if all FOX offered next year were Glee, The New Girl, IHMTD and The Finder...

ReplyDeleteCan't say I am surprised, and personally I am not upset by this as I thought that although it had promise it was so far away from being a good show that I stopped watching after a couple of episodes. i did go back and watch the finale, which I admit was excellent, but by that stage it was a bit too late.

This could be good news for Alcatraz though which has a much cheaper budget than TN did , and since the two were battaling for that slot it improves Alcatraz's chances I think.Hope we hear Fringe's fate soon, since, we all know Rielly's a big fan of the show.

Why would they expect me to put my time into watching Touch (or any other show for that matter) if I'm to assume that there is a 50% or greater chance that it will be cancelled before any real resolution. I am tired of wasting my time on shows for a season only to be left hanging.
ReplyDeleteI had planned on watching Touch, but there is a 0% chance of me watching it until it makes it to at least a 2nd season and probably not until a 3rd season. I'm done wasting my time on half stories.
Terra Nova cost a ton of money to produce, and the ratings were not sufficient enough to continue the series.
