-Ratings Breakdown:
Dominant NBC stood well above the competition, besting distant No. 2 ABC, which featured the Women Tell All edition of The Bachelor, by a hefty54 percent. Third-place CBS featured a night of all repeats, followed by Fox and encore-populated The CW.
Mega-hit The Voice on NBC rose to its highest rated regularly scheduled telecast ever (excluding the post-Super Bowl slot, of course), with a 10.3/16 in the overnights from 8-10 p.m. Comparably, that outdelivered two-hours of year-ago occupant The Event (3.8/ 6 on 3/07/11) by 171 percent and it built from one week earlier (9.3/15 on 2/27/12) by 11 percent. Here is the half-hour breakdown:
The Voice (NBC)
8:00 p.m.: 9.7/15 (#1)
8:30 p.m.: 10.6/16 (#1)
9:00 p.m.: 10.3/15 (#1)
9:30 p.m.: 10.5/16 (#1)
With greater lead-in support (and opposite repeats of both Castle on ABC and Hawaii Five-O on CBS), lead-out Smash rose it its second most-watched episode to-date with a dominant 5.8/10 at 10 p.m. While Smash did build by 21 percent from one week earlier (4.9/ 8 on 2/27/12), retention out of the 9:30 p.m. portion was still only 55 percent. And older-skewing year-ago occupant Harry’s Law was stronger at a 4.9/ 8 on 3/07/11.
Over at ABC, aforementioned The Bachelor: The Women Tell All scored a competitive 6.2/ 9 from 8-10 p.m., fluctuating by only two-tenths of a rating point in the four half-hours as follows:
The Bachelor: The Women Tell All (ABC)
8:00 p.m.: 6.2/10 (#2)
8:30 p.m.: 6.1/ 9 (#2)
9:00 p.m.: 6.3/ 9 (#2)
9:30 p.m.: 6.3/ 9 (#2)
Next Monday marks the season-finale of The Bachelor, followed by the season-premiere of Dancing With the Stars on March 19.
At 10 p.m. on ABC was a repeat of Castle at a third-place 4.6/ 8 in the overnights.
CBS traveled the repeat route last night with its line-up of How I Met Your Mother (#3: 4.3/ 7), 2 Broke Girls (#3: 4.8/ 7), Two and a Half Men (#3: 5.3/ 8), Mike & Molly (#3: 4.7/ 7) and Hawaii Five-O (#2: 4.7/ 8). Facing The Voice, no doubt, has not been beneficial to the comedy block.
Over at Fox, two-hours of recently introduced drama Alcatraz under-performed with a 3.9/ 6 from 8-10 p.m. Comparably, that trailed the year-ago combination of House (7.4/11 on 3/07/11) and The Chicago Code (5.1/ by a considerable 38 percent. Here is the half-hour breakdown:
Alcatraz (Fox)
8:00 p.m.: 4.2/ 6 (#4)
8:30 p.m.: 4.0/ 6 (#4)
9:00 p.m.: 3.8/ 6 (#4)
9:30 p.m.: 3.8/ 6 (#4)
Alcatraz concludes for the season (or series) on March 26.
Last, and very least, were repeats of America’s Next Top Model: British Invasion (0.9/ 1) and Hart of Dixie (0.6/ 1) on The CW. At this point, Top Model is in dire need of a rest.

Damn it. I love Alcatraz and I want it to do better in the ratings! I wish more people were watching.
ReplyDeleteIt was doing fine until The Voice started.... sad to think more people watch reality singing competitions than scripted TV, but you can't argue with the figures. I think Alcatraz does well on DVR, but unfortunately that doesn't seem to count.
ReplyDeleteNot if it keeps dropping like this, if it had stabilized earlier at a decent place in the demos, then maybe it wouldn't be in this situation.
ReplyDeleteOMG! Yes! The Voice and Smash both rise in ratings this week! VERY good news for NBC!
ReplyDeleteI'm seeing that my theory about Smash's momentum was right. It takes a while to get used to it but I think the ratings could go back possibly to when it premiered. Love Smash and I hope it survives and gets the attention it deserves
ReplyDeleteI will admit... I like The Voice. I really do. It's a unique spin on reality singing competitions with GREAT judges who really sell the show for me. BUT...
ReplyDeleteReality television just doesn't compare to scripted television. It's great Alcatraz was doing so well UNTIL The Voice came on and really terribly pathetic it's doing so badly now that it's on. Maybe it's just me, and maybe I'm old fashioned ( a high possibility ) but, wasn't the idea of a "cinematic experience" ( movie, or television ) supposed to be about being told a story? A story with characters and plot ideas that you would never normally experience otherwise. That's what scripted television gives us and it's a damn shame were seeing so much of it fail on modern TV of late.
If FOX was smart ( and let's be truthful, until Fringe were they ever? ), they would give Alcatraz a second season and move it to a less competitive night or just not have it go up against reality competition powerhouses ( I'll never quite understand this ). I just don't know how you can see that Alcatraz ratings before The Voice were good and steady. Once The Voice starts Alcatraz slowly starts to drop and The Voice slowly starts to rise. Coincidence? Unlikely.
The quality of this show is actually VERY good. No Jorge Garcia is not playing the same character as Hurley so some people need to remove their head from their rectum and actually watch the damn show.
Sorry for the rant, but it's truly a damn shame that creative shows with genuinely good ideas and scripts that actually make you think continuously fall by the wayside. ( Alcatraz and Fringe ) Side note, if Fringe falls by the wayside without a 5th and Final Season... I may kill someone.
is it true alcatraz is canceled ??
ReplyDeleteYes, we announced it last night.
ReplyDeleteagree but some site say it is not yet over I preferred to askSo the fox cancels alcatraz and terra nova? wtf !!
ReplyDeleteNo, just Terra Nova has been cancelled. No decision has been made yet on Alcatraz
ReplyDeleteok ... but knowing FOX they will continue with Alcatraz and Fringe ....
ReplyDeleteWe'll have to wait and see :)
ReplyDeleteIndeed, I expect to read your news ;)
ReplyDeleteMe too! What the heck?!
ReplyDeleteNext year we will have Nascar every Monday night.
ReplyDeleteOh dear, Alcatraz isn't looking too good. Nearly 50,000 viewers abandoned it after the first of the two episodes.
ReplyDeleteIf they were enjoying it the number of viewers would at least have stayed steady.
They better not cancel alcatraz. Its so interesting and so different from the regular crime shows.
ReplyDeleteI hope Fox keeps it around for another season
The problem with Alcatraz is that the premise is ludicrous, and I don't mean the time travel (or whatever is going on).
ReplyDeleteHauser is obviously incredibly well funded on this project. He has at least 30 people under his command. The FBI (or whoever) built a giant underground prison (that costs a LOT of money).
All of these prisoners wake up inside Alcatraz one (or a few) at a time. They all blend in with the tours and go to San Francisco. Hauser's computer takes only a few seconds to use facial recognition to identify people as one of the prisoners. Zero effort is made to capture any of these prisoners before they leave the island. Huh?
When the premise for a show makes no logical sense whatsoever, I can't really blame people for not watching. I generally enjoy the show, but this is a massive flaw that will obviously never be fixed.
That is 400,000.
ReplyDeleteIm sorry Alcatraz fans but it looks like its going to get cancelled. Even against repeats it didnt go up not even a little
ReplyDeleteYou are quite correct. My mistake. That makes it even worse!
ReplyDeleteI will agree with that, and commend you on making a great point. I think with all shows like this there has to be a suspension of disbelief. And if the level in which you can suspend your disbelief is lower then the quality and other aspects of the show it should hopefully be able to be overlooked.
ReplyDeleteAm I saying you should act like it's not there whatsoever? No, not at all! I'm just saying for a show that, in my opinion, does so much right ( Mystery, Suspense, Shock and Awe, Likeable Characters ) small things that are overlooked should occasionally get a pass. Now I know some elitists will say that what I'm trying to say is EVERYTHING that doesn't make sense should get a pass if the show has other good qualities right?! No.. wrong. All I'm saying is I don't think this is a reason to NOT watch the show or STOP watching the show when it has so many other things going for it.
I hope Alcatraz doesn't end on a crazy cliffhanger that never gets resolved
ReplyDeleteWould much rather see Fringe get another season than Alcatraz.
ReplyDeleteIt's hard for me to understand how people who can't sing being more exciting than a mystery show filled with suspense horror comedy and drama. I guess I turn on the radio and hear enough people who can't sing so why would I want to hear more?
ReplyDeleteI can easily suspend my disbelief in regards to the "mystery" whether it involves time travel, aliens, supernatural power or whatever.
ReplyDeleteBut, I have huge problems when the writers disregard common sense or the laws of physics when it comes to mundane matters. When the writers fluff all the details for the normal stuff, it bodes very ill for them keeping the details of the "mystery" consistant. If the writers change the rules from week to week, it makes trying to figure out the "mystery" impossible and pointless.
Sadly, this sort of lazy writing is very common. So yeah, if we can't suspend our disbelief of such things, we are quickly reduced to watching almost nothing on tv. Still, the more of our brains register nonsense details, the harder it is to enjoy a show.
Another thing that bothers me (though less so) is how they constantly travel back and forth to the mainland. That is a lot of added travel time every time they rush to the scene of a crime. They could easily have 3-4 hours travel time from their "office" to a crime scene and back. That is the sort of detail I can largely just laugh off, since it is incredibly common on tv.
With or without a cliffhanger, I don't expect to learn much about what is really going on before the end of the season, which is just a few episodes away.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if fox will cancel both JJ Abraham show
ReplyDeleteGood chance they will cancel 2 of 3. PoI looks pretty safe.
ReplyDeleteSad but true, they have been playing it just a little too safe for my liking in terms of mythology
ReplyDeleteSolid numbers Smash!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteoh boy, alcatraz is doing really bad! i hadn't been checking its ratings (enough ratings drama with fringe!!) and i just assumed it was doing ok... it's a shame, i enjoy it. looks like sci-fi really has no place in network tv after all...
ReplyDeleteI've been looking forward Alcatraz since the day it was announced and I have to admit I'm a little disappointed.
ReplyDeleteI'm not getting warm with the characters, every episode works out the same ("Oh a crime. [Insert crime] Ah it's [insert prisoner here] - then they search for him - prisoner gets captured or killed in San Francisco.)
Okay, that was a little harsh.
But the characters seem too flat for me, there's not enough dynamic interaction between them.
Something positive: The flashbacks are nice, I like them.
Actually I don't have to say that all over again because other users already said what I think and it's difficult to describe if you're not a native (So please excuse my mistakes).
But I have to say Alcatraz isn't as good as I believed it was.
I hope it gets better in its final S1 episodes.
In the end there's no way I would prefer Alcatraz before Fringe.
Could be an interesting 2nd season of Alcatraz but I'd rather see Season 5 of Fringe.
