Initial thoughts: Damn Frank Whaley is not "in the know" as much as in on the escape or gold robbery... So much for that theory of mine *Boom* Another theory bomb exploded, thank you Bad Robot! XD
They have keys, they're going to open the Big Heavey Door and let us see behind it! Huzzah! Oh wait, they have the wrong keys for the wrong door. .. bummer.
FYI Sally Port is the old gatehouse (and arrival point) on Alcatraz Island from the pre-Civil War days. It used to have a drawbridge and everything! XD Later after it was turned into a federal prison the gaurds used it as the Gaurdhouse.
Past: Nice to see Ray Archer and Tommy Madsen again! The plot thickens! They are working together to figure out what is going on at Alcatraz. So Ray definitely knows more than he lets on, but I guess that was obvious.
A lot of interesting "time" references tonight: - Dep Warden Tiller ~ "Trying to save these inamtes is a waste of time" - Warden James ~ "It's not a waste of time EB. I can assure you, nothing we do here [at Alcatraz] is wasting time" - Warden James ~ "I'm more of an Old Testament sort of bloke" - Emerson Hauser ~ "Take your time" And many more....
Present: Hauser gets shot and says he is "fine?" I guess he went to the Jack Bauer school of definitions!
- Alcatraz 2.0 sighting! - Collodial Silver in the blood of the 63s... Interesting. It appeared to be gold the warden had not silver. Lighting change the color maybe?
Sonny Burnett if a violent and scary man for someone that was basically non-viloent before Alcatraz! I guess prison puts a man through many changes.....
I officially declare mr love of Dr. Beauregard! He amuses me!
Final Thoughts: I like how they used the Ames brothers to get at a bit more of the Wardens 1963 back story and Sonny Burnett was just creepy!!!
I love the shifting dynamic between EB Tiller and Warden James as the series progresses. It has gone from subversive subordinate dealing with a mercurial authority to anonimousity to threatening.
I thought these were two pretty good episodes. It lacked any real connection and I don't understand why they felt the need to run these two together and skip over 1.10 Clarence Montgomery. Already prepared advertising and promotion they did not want to lose money on reworking the ads? I liked the back story and myth arc connections in 1.08 The Ames Bros a lot and I enjoyed the modern side of 1.09 Sonny Burnett alot. Two Great episodes, but not quite awesome for me.
I've only just watched the Ames Bros ep, and it was fantastic! With a good bit of developments as well as new questions mainly regarding the warden - what the heck was he running there? Bummer for the 2 shirts backroom guy who got the bolt cutter scalp massage care of Pinky (who I also recall was a freaky vampire in S1 of True Blood)... got say that the weird warden must've had a great work out back in the day as he seemed to easily lift a very large bar of gold with one arm when I've read that the standard gold bar which is much smaller than the one he was holding usually weighs about 70 pounds.... lol
Of course it depends on the size of the bar/ brick of gold (I believe older bricks were larger than our bars), but the international standard gold bar (like at Ft Knox) weighs 27.5 pounds (400 troy ounces).
Still a lot to lift by your finger tips with your arm outstretched, but not as bad as 70 pounds I guess! XD
Well, I thought they were both great tense episodes. Love that the rumors about the gold were true. And EB creating a monster...very interesting. Did he have a goal?
However, I'm starting to get very frustrated about my inability to get any sense of...um...continuity as to why the these guys are coming back. I'm not saying I need to know the specific answer right now. I realize that there's a mystery there and we're supposedly getting clues. What I need is a sense that there's an intentional design behind it all and on this point I am simply not getting it. It feels haphazard and every time I watch an ep with a bad guy running around pursuing a personal agenda I get more frustrated. Is there a common thread?
Two enjoyable episodes, thou I don't get why they were shown back to back like this. The main feeling I've come away with is that these 63ers really don't seem to interconnect with each other, apart from the keys being found in the first couple of episodes it doesn't feel like they share any common goals. Is it an experiment failure that they are off doing their own thing instead of what their mission should be, or is there something larger at work that we can't see yet.
From what we know about people bts leaving the show before it even aired, part of me wonders if this is why it doesn't yet feel together enough. It's almost like they have forgotten how the show started and are taking a different path which could be why it doesn't feel as interconnected as I would like it to.
Also, I think the show needs more Theo Rossi press up scenes ;) hehe
I thought these were both really dark episodes and also both present some rather interesting philosophical debates, along with some good mytho insight, although the missing stepping stone of 1x08, is something I think FOX should have avoided, because it made 1x10 make more sense and gives a clearer understanding of some things.
I have a bit of a cold, so the recap will probably be done closer to the weekend! --There's a lot of stuff I would like to explore about rejuvination, silver, and mythology!
I don't understand their reasoning either? --It would have been better to put 1x08 with 1x09 and put 1x10 next Monday! I have yet to see 1x08, but I know what the stepping stone is and think it would have been better in order...
I also love what's going on with James and Tiller because they set up a debate towards the nature of 'experimentation' in terms of reaping "rewards" or desired outcomes...'
I also love using SILVER as at least one predominate angle in the immortal-transforming aspect to the series, since Silver through out history has been used as preservation/anti- aging properties ...and how cool is it that it's alchemical symbol is the crescent moon, further associating it with dreams and the sub conscience...
My recap will probably be late due to this cold I required yesterday ::evil glare:: --But there is so much I want to go over! XD
I don't think the out-of-order airing damaged anything; they were pretty stand-alone episodes in my opinion (both pretty good, I might say, two of the best episodes this season).
I can live with Clarence following up, because that works stand-alone pretty much, too, like almost any episode of Alcatraz does. We will have to see if that's either good or bad, butI hope the ratings don't slip into abysmal territories soon :\
years ago, fox cancelled another favorite show, alien nation, after 3 seasons. but them they made 5 made-for-tv movies to tie up all the loose ends. maybe this time too?
IT did ruin or at least lessen the impact of one fairly major reveal.
In Ames Bros we learned that Colloidal Silver has been added to the blood by someone or something. Now when Clarence Montgomery airs and they reveal that SOMETHING has is done to the blood be tween removing it and replacing it it is old news. We already are aware of that fact and know what is being added.
That said, Supposedly they are going to do some tweaks in post-production to add continuity. Maybe they will add something new to the myth arc, but in all likelihood they will just add comments about Hauser's injury. *shrug*
FYI... I added the most recent mugshots to the SpoilerTV Photo Archive.
really loving this show at the minute. Thought each epi was really good although the The Ames Brothers was in my opinion a bit better. Enjoying the fact that the background story is being developed aswell. :)
You're right...but since Clarence focused more on the Room 23-like manipulations they were testing, it didn't really f**k up the blood reveals for me, even though you have a point there. In former episode orders they had Clarence before and after the Ames Bros., so maybe they weren't really sure what's the best order to go with themselves.
I liked these episodes a lot. Especially the Ames Bros. one. I think that might be my fave so far. It was all on Alcatraz and it was all about Alcatraz, unlike the usual formulaic format of every other episode.
I don't mean to criticize Jorge's acting, but I still think Doc is just Hurley with a PhD and a distinct lack of 'dude'.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
Both great episodes! The eye gouging was the most disgusting thing I've seen on this show. So gross. Never again, please.
ReplyDeleteI think the lady who was kidnapped last episode was the same one who played Laura in the Santa Clause movies, but I'm not entirely sure.
I loved everything tonight. Minus the eye gouging because ew.

Are you talking about Santa's wife? If so, no. It's a different actress.

Okay, good! I thought it was Wendy Crewson, but nothing had been updated yet.
ReplyDeleteAnd I miss Elizabeth Mitchell. Hope to see her in something soon.
so is it good news to alcatraz that they cancelled terra nova??
ReplyDeletewhen did they officially cancel terra nova? ack! :(
ReplyDeleteI voted "Awesome"

This morning i think! They say they're going to try and shop it around to other networks though...
ReplyDeleteGet better... and your delay allows me more time to squee like a fangirl as I watch Game of Thrones Blu-Ray features! XD
ReplyDeleteI will also be doing that! (in between coughs and hitting the key pads)
