-Rating Results:
Sunday was ABC’s night to shine, of course, care of annual bloated extravaganza The Academy Awards. Keeping in mind that ratings for any live event are always approximate, the 84th annual festivities averaged a 26.6 rating/39 share in the overnights from 8:30-11 p.m. in primetime (and a 26.6/40 from 8:30-11:30 p.m.). Compared to one year earlier (25.5/39 on 2/28/11), this was an increase of four percent. And last year’s telecast translated into 37.92 million viewers and an 11.8 rating/30 share among adults 18-49, based on the Live Plus Same Day ratings. The Academy Awards more than doubled the three competing networks, with the half-hour breakdown as follows:

The 84th Annual Academy Awards (ABC)
8:30 p.m.: 24.8/36
9:00 p.m.: 26.4/38
9:30 p.m.: 27.1/39
10:00 p.m.: 27.5/40
10:30 p.m.: 27.0/42
11:00 p.m.: 26.7/44

Earlier in the evening on ABC was special Oscars Red Carpet Live at a dominant 12.7/21 in the overnights from 7-8:30 p.m., with growth by half-hour as follows:

Oscar’s Red Carpet Live (ABC)
7:00 p.m.: 9.2/16
7:30 p.m.: 12.0/20
8:00 p.m.: 16.9/26

Elsewhere, the results were slim. An encore telecast of 60 Minutes on CBS, themed 60 Minutes Classic, opened with a second-place 5.0/ 8 at 7 p.m. Next was episode two of the new season of The Amazing race (#2: 4.9/ 7), which was not all that bad considering it faced the Oscars, followed by repeats of The Mentalist (#3: 2.9/ 4) and CSI: Miami (#3: 3.3/ 5) from 9-11 p.m. While airing on Academy Awards night is certainly no real test, CBS could very well be considering moving The Mentalist to Sunday night next season.

Over at NBC, repeats of Dateline (#3: 3.4/ 6) and an abridged version of Celebrity Apprentice (#4: 1.7/ 3) from 7-9 p.m. led into an original installment of Donald Trump and his list of “C” and “D” listers at a below average 3.9/ 6 from 9-11 p.m. Compared to the week-ago season-opener (5.1/ 8 on 2/19/12), this was a loss of 24 percent. Here is the half-hour breakdown:

Celebrity Apprentice (NBC)
9:00 p.m.: 3.5/ 5 (#2)
9:30 p.m.: 3.7/ 6 (#2)
10:00 p.m.: 3.7/ 6 (#2)
10:30 p.m.: 4.9/ 9 (#2)

While I do not want to reveal who departed to anyone who may not have seen Celebrity Apprentice yet, I do have to admit I personally thought this person would last much longer.

Fox capped off the evening with encore telecasts of Bob’s Burgers (#4: 1.3/ 2), The Cleveland Show (#4: 1.5/ 2), The Simpsons (#3: 2.5/ 4), Napoleon Dynamite (#3: 2.0/ 3), Family Guy (#4: 2.4/ 4) and American Dad (#4: 2.1/ 3) from 7-10 p.m. As a reminder, season two of Bob’s Burgers will replace Napoleon Dynamite on March 11.
