SUNDAY 1/29/12 METERED MARKETS

Household
Rating/Share
CBS 7.8/12
NBC 7.6/12
ABC 4.8/ 7
Fox 2.9/ 4

-Percent Change from Year-Ago Evening – Sunday 1/30/11
NBC: +137, ABC: + 7, CBS: - 1, Fox: -66

----------

-Winners:
60 Minutes (CBS), Undercover Boss (CBS), Once Upon a Time (ABC), The Good Wife (CBS), CSI: Miami (CBS)

-Losers (excluding repeats):
Hallmark Hall of Fame’s A Smile as Big as the Moon (ABC), The Cleveland Show (Fox)

----------

-Rating Results:
CBS led the Sunday overnights, inching past NBC by two-tenths of a rating point (or three percent). But there is every reason to believe the 2012 AFC/NFC Pro Bowl on NBC will dominate among adults 18-49. In the distant No. 3 spot in the metered markets was ABC, which has not benefited since acquiring the Hallmark Hall of Fame titles from CBS, followed by distant Fox.

Older skewing CBS granddaddy 60 Minutes opened the evening tied for first with the NFC Pro Bowl at an 8.1 rating/13 share in the overnights at 7 p.m. That led into Undercover Boss (#2: 8.3/13 at 8 p.m.), which moves to Fridays at 8 p.m. on February 17, followed by The Good Wife (#1: 7.9/12) and veteran CSI: Miami (#1: 7.2/12) from 9-11 p.m. While CBS will certainly skew older for the evening, based on the overnights this was a “winning” night.

Over at NBC, the 2012 AFC/NFC Pro Bowl averaged an approximate 7.6/12 in the overnight from 8-11 p.m., with the half-hour breakdown as follows:

AFC/NFC Pro Bowl
7:00 p.m.: 7.3/12 (#2)
7:30 p.m.: 8.9/15 (#1)
8:00 p.m.: 8.8/14 (#1)
8:30 p.m.: 8.4/13 (#2)
9:00 p.m.: 7.1/11 (#2)
9:30 p.m.: 7.6/11 (#2)
10:00 p.m.: 7.2/11 (#1t)
10:30 p.m.: 5.9/10 (#2)

One year earlier, the AFC-NFC Pro Bowl on Fox was stronger at an 8.6/13 on Fox on 1/31/11. Keep in mind, as always, that results for any live sporting event are always approximate.

Elsewhere, hit ABC freshman drama Once Upon a Time was on the overnight map with a third-place 6.9/10 at 8 p.m. Comparably, that built from lead-in America’s Funniest Home Videos (#3: 4.3/ 7 at 7 p.m.) by 60 percent, with growth over year-ago occupant Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (5.5/ 8 on 1/30/11) of 25 percent. But the next title in ABC’s recently acquired Hallmark Hall of Fame series, A Smile As Big as the Moon, disappointed at a 3.9/ 6 from 9-11 p.m. with the half-hour breakdown as follows:

Hallmark Hall of Fame’s A Smile As Big as the Moon
9:00 p.m.: 4.0/ 6 (#4)
9:30 p.m.: 3.7/ 6 (#3)
10:00 p.m.: 4.0/ 6 (#3)
10:30 p.m.: 4.1/ 7 (#3)

Fox, of course, is dependent on the demos and not the overnights. That said, an encore telecast of Bob’s Burger’s opened the evening with a 1.2/ 2 at 7 p.m. (#4), followed by The Cleveland Show (#4: 1.9/ 3), The Simpsons (#4: 3.5/ 5), recent animated entry Napoleon Dynamite (#4: 2.9/ 4), Family Guy (#3: 4.3/ 6) and American Dad (#4: 3.4/ 5) from 7:30-10 p.m. Comparably, this was a series low for Napoleon Dynamite.

  1. So happy for OUAT, especially since the SAGs were on!

And I wanted to watch that Hallmark Hall of Fame movie. It looked interesting. (Shut up, they're a guilty pleasure.)

  3. Can someone please explain to me how these ratings translate to the A18-49 ones we receive after? I've noticed that what is classed as a winner here doesnt always come out as winner in the key demo and vice versa with the loosers.

  5. I'm glad that OUAT is doing great I just hope that it is able to keep up the trend...especially when it comes to S2

  6. I think these ones are the Household fast track samples that come out first. I think Bearman reports on "winners/losers" as simply how many viewers were retained from the show that was on previously.

  8. Once Upon a Time I believe Improved from Last week.It shows some of It's audence don't watch live when major awards and sports are on.It nearly won the demo for the timeslot. And Nearly win the Demo for the night. Before long don't be surprised for ABC to officially pick It up for season 2.

  11. Berman is very clear about what shows he enjoys and what shows he dislikes, which can often translate into certain aspects of winners vs. losers. Otherwise, Dark is completely right about him being a retentionist and that being how he classifies things.

Besides that, 18-49 ratings don't really translate from the Households. If a show gets 20 million 60 year olds watching and no one aged 18-49, the 18-49 rating would be 0 while the HH would be something like 13 (this would never happen). That's why Family Guy is never a winner according to Berman (6 million viewers/a 4.3/6 is pretty mediocre), but it comes out close to the top in the 18-49 demo (a 3, which translates to about 4 of the 6 million viewers being the advertisers' target audience). Another example is in comparing The Good Wife to Once Upon A Time. Both had about 10.5 million viewers this week, but OUAT got a 3.4 and TGW got a 2.2. Clearly, TGW is older skewing as only 3.5 million of their 10.5 were in the target demo (while OUAT had about 5 million).

  12. thank you both. I have always assumed MB lacked impartiality when it comes to these reports. I just also assumed there was something more to these numbers that translated into the all important demo numbers. Can I just assume these numbers are relatively useless?

    thanks!
