I loved it. Lana Parrilla kills it every single time. I loved how her Regina the wife of the King voice was so different from her voice in Storybrooke and her voice as the Evil Queen.
But I really couldn't believe how absolutely stupid Emma was. Emma, why did you ever let ANYONE convince you to do multiple illegal things? Things you were against to start with? She needs to up her hero game.
So, that's how the man got trapped in the mirror! I think this is the first time I have ever seen anything discuss how that happened. Why in the world Emma would trust anyone that Regina wanted in the sheriff position is beyond me. I hate how much Henry is going to suffer because of the games Regina plays! She doesn't care about anyone and Sidney is just an idiot for sticking around after she pulled all that crap. I know love is blinding, but seriously, his guy really needs some help.
I can't wait for next week! Beauty and the Beast!! That looks like a really interesting episode!!
Wow.Can I say Lana Parrilla Is the best sexy evil Bitch on TV.I totally hate her keeping Emma and Henry apart.Hopefully few will complain how Henry treats Regina anymore.
In both worlds Sydney Is a fool over Regina. The King gave him his freedom and he sure wasn't grateful for It.
They are sure going to keep us guessing till they reveal what secret Snow white didn't keep of Regina, and why she hates Snow White. Her revenge was for something that happened before tonight's flashbacks. My gut tells me that will come In the episode with a 12 year old Snow and with Regina's mother. We also know her name In The enchanted forest was Regina too.
The stranger took Henry's book.I thought It was regina who did that.It will be Intresting to see what he wants with It.
not for me exactly i didnt expect it until right when he starts to fall in love with the queen then right then and there i knew he would be the mirror plus also we've known sidney was the magic mirror since day one. im just surprised it was the genie from agrabah. hopefully not "the" genie like aladdin's genie.
guys im surprised its not more obivious. emma needs ally's and thats what sidney is playing against her as did gold. moving to a new town, to help her kid from regina she knows she cant do it alone and knows it. she has to try and trust others for help like she did mary margeret. and in some cases like sidney and gold she tryed and failed. shes not stupid shes actually smart to gain power before using what she has....!

Well, Sidney's backstory certainly didn't make me like the guy. He totally deserved what he got being stuck in that mirror. I mean, killing the guy who set you free, and gave you a home, and a wish was really cold. And not seeing that she was setting him up with the whole 'snake from my region' thing, was pretty stupid. What did he think would happen after he killed the king? Everyone would ignore that the guy obviously was killed by a snake slipped into his bed chambers and let the weird genie guy marry the queen? He's a genie for pete's sake, he of all people should know that consequences come with actions. And he should also know that when you are making a wish, you should never say something totally vague like I want to be with her always.... I thought it was awesome that they combined the genie with the man in the mirror like that, but I didn't like that they made the guy a complete idiot. I thought Sidney was really interesting before this episode. That really disappointed me. I was also really disappointed in Mary Margaret. I'm sorry, but adultery is the thing that easily ruins any epic love story. I can't root for that. And I wasn't too impressed with Emma either. She's supposed to have this great backbone, but she caved really fast. The whole episode was just....kind of depressing for everyone involved. Overall, it might be my least favorite.
Gotta say that even though I kept thinking that Sidney was playing her and setting her up, the performances had me believing that he was on the level with Emma.... Loved the interpretation and take that the genie of the lamp and the mirror dude turned out to be one and the same. Goes to show that the deadliest viper in the ep was indeed the EQ, because hers is a bite that you'll never see coming. I guess her new name can be Regenie... But I keep thinking that since Emma's been on to them and playing the players since she does have the super power to know when someone is lying to her. No surprise that the mysterious stranger has the book, I'm just thinking that he has a magic typewriter that can alter the stories if he so chooses to do so.
This one finally pushed me over the edge I think (although I have said that before 2 or 3 times)....
So much in every episode just does not make sense. Emma trusting Sidney? Even if Emma was in a hurry to get even with Regina, it just does not make sense to me. How many times does she have to get burned (or how many houses have to get burned) for her to learn from her lack of judgement? Seriously.
Then again Sidney betraying the one man that set him free does not make sense to me either. You set me free so I must set her free? Does not compute. I do get he always wanted love.. okay fine, but the man knows better than anyone wishes and actions have consequences. So he then does the ridiculous act to kill the King and set himself up to take the fall? Really? On top of that who betrays the one good, kind-hearted person they have encountered in more than one lifetime, who also happens to be the only man wise enough to not wish beyond his need?
Well the obvious answer is the guy who said there are consequences to any wish in the beginning of the episode since this show makes a point of beating you over the head with foreshadowing! This show certainly is no fan of subtlety! XD
Ignoring the terrible VFX snakes... I did enjoy Sidney being a genie. Although I still think Espositio is underused with this mediocre dialog. He delivers well-written lines so well, it's a shame he has to work with the dialog on this show.
I also liked the Stranger being the one that took Henry's book despite it appearing Regina had taken it from her comment about the drawing being based on a picture in one of Henry's books...
I'm justnot sure it's worth my time to dislike 75-85% of eahc episode to get 15 to 25% I like. A few of the mystery elements intrigue me, but at what cost? XD I guess the show is just not for me.
I am glad it's a hit though since it may lead to some other fairy tale series I like more next season! Well not counting the fairy tale show I enjoy more already this season, Grimm.
Possibly my least favourite episode so far this season. Maybe I'm used to doubting characters, but I predicted almost every twist in the story. I knew Sidney was tricking Emma, the Stranger stole the book, that the sketch was of a playground.. I did not expect the Mirror Man to be the Genie, but overall, it was not the best written/planned out episode.
Don't get me wrong, I love the show, and I've had nothing to say but praise, but this one had characters acting out of character, and the resolution to the fairytale story was disappointing.
I truly believe next episode will be the best one of the season (so far).
The moment I saw the Mirror dresses as a genie I squealed. I did not expect that. I called Sydney setting Emma up about 15 seconds into their first scene. It's nice to finally see Regina change her tactics for dealing with Emma. Now if we can just get Emma back to the level of smarts we saw first in the pilot. I think the Emma/Regina stories work best when they're both at the top of their game. I miss that. A genie. That was a surprise. I knew he was in trouble the moment that he looked at Regina. Poor thing. Masterful setup that Regina pulled...and given that we all knew exactly where his final wish would lead. The one other thing that I do wish this show would do is impart the same passion on the Storybrooke stories that they seem to have imparted on the fairy tale stories. I love this show and want to stop feeling like the Storybrooke stories are the red headed stepchild of the show.
Emma trusting Sidney didn't make a lot of sense to me either. She's been presented as so distrustful in the past, and she is very aware that Sidney has been in the Mayor's pocket up to this point. I really hope it turns out that she's playing him too. I think it's weird that they've completely dropped her "superpower." The reason that she stayed in Storybrooke in the first place was because she could tell that Regina was lying about loving Henry. Now she's getting betrayed left and right by liars all around.
I totally agree about the genie killing the king. I mean, the genie barely knew the Queen at all, and she's done nothing to prove that she loves him, other than a vague mention in a diary, and he's willing to kill the only man kind enough to save him, and take him in? What a horrible person.
I miss them both being on the top of their game too. The past few episodes have just been too depressing, with the Mayor always winning a huge victory, and Emma only getting a small one or duped. I'm not sure how long I can last on this series if this is going to be the permanent pattern.
She may need allies, but there are more people in town than the ones who have already proven themselves to be manipulative or corrupt. She'd be much better off with a lot of allies who only have a little power, versus the ones out to get her, who have a lot of power.
Okay. Some elements work. Some don't. Some things make me roll my eyes and some things surprise me. Overall I find this show inconsistent. But I like it anyway. Enough to keep watching. But it certainly isn't one the top few shows I look forward to most every week.
And Emma. You are now the sheriff. Whatcha doin' breaking and entering and committing other crimes? Where is this going to get you? JFC pull your head out of your ass.
Probably the worst of the season. Didn't enjoy the genie storyline, although I did like the Evil Queen playing him. However, Emma vs. Regina is being done to death. I swear it's even just repeating the same dialogue, or very similar "You may see me as evil, Miss Swan blah blah..."
The genie certainly went for murder quickly and didn't connect the dots. Although I was surprised that Regina actually seemed to care about him despite what she said. She had tears in her eyes and wanted him to leave rather than take his heart or have him killed. Girl has got rather psychotic abandonment issues.
Although Regina said she had taken the idea from Henry's book, the play castle is clearly based on her her castle so she didn't need the book. A play castle that was magically built in only a few hours too.
I did guess where it was going, and am a little frustrated that good is on the losing side so much, but I have faith that the tide will start to turn soon, hopefully?
Huh.. I had a little Aladdin flashback there when the king wished for the genie to be free haha.. and this is one of the first times that someone's back story didn't endear me to them, even a little. Not a fan of mirror man.
The mayor isn't really winning anything though. Emma is still in town, is permanently employed and Henry loves her; Mary Margaret is making out with her true love and she's losing control of her town. So all Regina has accomplished is killing one guy for hurting her feelings and made Emma trust a guy she really shouldn't be trusting anyway.
Emma is also still in town AND the Sheriff. Snow White is making out with Prince Charming. Cinderella has her baby and her boyfriend. Hopper threatened her where it hurt.
Regina's only really won once and that's when she killed Graham. Even this 'victory' is hollow if Emma stops being the stupidest person ever and realizes she shouldn't trust Sidney.
I loved the hole genie/man in the mirror backstory! But I kind of hated that Sidney is on Regina's side. I guess it will change when he figure things out, but it feels like, when steps is beeing taken, a lot of them is backwards in this story.
The worst episode of the season, by far. Once Upon A Time's extremely uneven and inconsistent writing makes it very frustrating to be a viewer sometimes.
- What happened to Emma's "superpower?" She should have known Sidney was playing her. - What happened to kick-ass, confident Emma? When the show started, we were introduced to an Emma Swan who knocked guys out, chainsawed trees down, and matched wits with Regina with no fear. Now they've turned Emma into a nitwit who just stands there and lets Regina lecture her in every episode. - Making Emma a moron isn't the only way a writer has to give Regina a victory. It has been established that Emma is impulsive. She moved to Storybrooke within hours of meeting Henry and there's the chainsaw thing too. Impulsive doesn't mean stupid though. There's no way in hell Sheriff Emma just breaks four or five laws in one episode, falls for an obvious con from Regina's lap dog, and then believes her weak crap about a restraining order.
Everything about the main plot of this episode was atrocious. I need to find out who wrote this episode so I can brace myself if the producers are ever stupid enough to let them pen another one.
Magazines and newspapers have fact checkers. I think this show needs a consistency / common sense checker for its scripts.
I watched Grimm for a few episodes. I really wanted to like that show. I think the mythology is really creative, but the episodes I saw didn't have any arc to really tie them all together, and I lost interest. Is it doing any better in this aspect, or is it still almost completely episodic?
I totally agree with all of this. While I was watching, I just kept thinking.....How did so many people involved in this production put so many hours into making this episode, without any of them noticing it had gone horribly wrong? I miss the old Emma. It's only the middle of the first season, you'd think they'd be able to keep a character consistent for that long.
Not really, no. It is still VERY short on overarching story.
That's one of my issues with that show too. I always prefer serialized shows, but I can enjoy more procedural based shows for a while I guess. Just rarely longer than a year or two.
This is all true, but it's not the peripheral facts that get me, it's the general tone of the show, and lately they've just made it feel really bleak, and they've done a bad job of presenting Emma as someone who can actually win. I know she will, but right now it doesn't look like it's going to make sense when she does, and I want it to make sense.
It's getting really frustrating watching Emma get dumber and dumber every episode. I like the fairy tale parts, but Storybrook scenes are repetitive and boring. And lately Emma and Snow have both been extremely unlikable, and the more entitled and dramatic they behave, the less I like them.
A heads-up for you and anyone else who wants to keep tabs on who is writing what on Once Upon A Time, "Fruit of the Poisonous Tree" was written by (according to the press release)...
Ian Goldberg & Andrew Chambliss.
I will definitely be paying more attention to who is writing the episodes on this show from now on.
Thank you for finding that out! They also wrote The Shepherd, I think. Which was better, but still not the strongest episode. I'm just glad that it wasn't Jane Espensen. Her cred remains intact.
That's too bad. I generally prefer serialized shows too, but do like a few procedurals. Grimm just doesn't work well as a procedural for me though, and it's pretty much because of their mythology. I can understand general crime shows not intersecting as much like Castle, or Bones, but when they've invented a whole other world with all sorts of different creatures and the main guy is supposed to have a destiny, I want to see how it all ties together more I guess. If that makes sense.
I think it needs the serial element badly too. That's why I don't see myself watching Grimm more than this season and maybe a few of Season 2 to see if they expand it to include the larger picture or the overarching story. Otherwise I will lose interest I'm pretty sure.
Darquemode, I can't believe you like Grimm more than this show! You have been stating your dislike and being unsure about this show since week 3, not that I am counting (but in fairness I keep going back and forth as well). I love the Easters eggs. I just love Lost so much that it's hard for me to quit this show. I want it to be Lost 2.0 soooo badly. I see so many similarities (for good or bad) and the potential that I am still holding out. Rumpy is my favorite and while I have a chunk of his story, I want the rest and until that happens I am watching (even it takes five more seasons). Grimm did just kick it up notch however but I feel like it is falling apart too just a little in some places.
I love LOST, but this is no LOST. Period. That may be a good thing to some people I guess, but it's a very bad thing to me.
I like the Easter Eggs too, but not enough to watch episodes filled with logic holes and contrived stories. It's fun at times, but being that I never liked fairy tales and don't like how unrealistic Storybrooke is, I just cannot enjoy any episode frankly. I enjoy parts of each episode, but I have yet to rate one above "Okay".
Grimm has a much darker tone, less Disney-fied and that appeals to me. I like their use of Grimm's fair tales since they are are more adult themed and violent.
I will readily admit Once Upon a Time is a higher production value series with more seasoned actors, but the writing is just terrible to me and the VFX for the most part are terrible too. Grimm has passable monster FX and knows to use them sparingly so they flaws are not blatant like on OUaT.
I also like the feel of Grimm, it reminds me of Buffy and Angel quite a bit. The rhythm and way events unfold are very Buffy-like and it's like comfort food for me. It's not overly designed (like Once), but it feels good to eat it even if you know it's bad for you! XD
I guess Once Upon a Time is just not for me, like some people did not like LOST.
I guess it's kind of like how Secret Circle will NEVER be The Vampire Diaries. You can watch and hope and cross your fingers but deep down you know it will never be on par. I love Grimm also for the simple fact that it is very Buffy-like. It was my second favorite show after the X-Files. I am not sure why the writers are so unevenly keeled. Emma has taken a turn for the worse (not that I even liked her to begin with) in such a short time. But I want to see how OUaT's Man In Black stacks up to Lost's and then I will take a break from the show for awhile. Sunday is a very busy night, especially since "Winter is coming" in April.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
The genie turning into the man in the mirror was unexpected, at least for me
ReplyDeleteI loved it! And I hate Regina. She doesn't give a fuck about Henry, I don't care what anyone says. She just gets worse every year.
ReplyDeleteAnd poor Sidney - I actually bought that Regina loved him in the Fairy Tale World, but that was a completely bitchy move.
This episode didn't blow my mind but it was good
ReplyDeleteI loved it. Lana Parrilla kills it every single time. I loved how her Regina the wife of the King voice was so different from her voice in Storybrooke and her voice as the Evil Queen.

it was good
ReplyDeleteOh man that Queen is truly evil!!!
ReplyDeleteOk, not the beast but well
ReplyDeleteEmma is so fricking stupid. Blindly trusting Sidney was dumb enough, but crashing the council meeting was just idiotic.
ReplyDeleteThe Evil Queen was marginally less evil in the past. lol, And Regina always has a plan. I love it!

ReplyDeleteI can't wait for next week! Beauty and the Beast!! That looks like a really interesting episode!!
I was surprised with that too, I didn't see it coming at all
ReplyDeleteI agree completely, I don't see why she'd randomly trust him
ReplyDeleteThey really need to smarten Emma up. She was doing the same thing with Gold three episodes ago.
ReplyDeleteBut I guess we can officially know that they've dropped the idea that Emma really does have a 'superpower'/
I don't think we have seen the whole story yet, keep in mind that these are the same folks that wrote Lost. Emma may be playing Sidney as well.

ReplyDeleteLOL, true.
ReplyDeleteMuch better than last weeks mess.
ReplyDeleteThat´s it...I can´t keep watching this show. Every week I get a little annoyed with the characters, but this week topped them all.
ReplyDeleteEmma trusting Sidney just seemed silly. I knew that it was a setup from the start. The whole counsel meeting scene was so obvious.
The only thing I liked was the motorcycle dude talking the book.
Probably the worst of the season. Didn't enjoy the genie storyline, although I did like the Evil Queen playing him.

ReplyDeleteLoved it!! But come on! why does Regina always have to win?
ReplyDeleteIt was OK...
ReplyDeleteI think I'm losing a little interest in the show though.... I'm constantly waiting for the campyness to even out, and I don't see it happening.
I did guess where it was going, and am a little frustrated that good is on the losing side so much, but I have faith that the tide will start to turn soon, hopefully?
ReplyDeleteDoes Grimm get better? I started watching, enjoyed the first two, but then those bees came and I just switched off
ReplyDeleteDoes she? Emma helped Hansel and Greta to reunite with their father, for example.
ReplyDeleteSuch a great episode!
ReplyDeleteI love Emma, she's probably my favourite character but she's so easily manipulated :(
This episode was great, but I was deeply annoyed with the ending...Seriously Sydney?!? WTF?
ReplyDeleteWhy does evil always win? :'(
ReplyDeleteHuh.. I had a little Aladdin flashback there when the king wished for the genie to be free haha.. and this is one of the first times that someone's back story didn't endear me to them, even a little. Not a fan of mirror man.

ReplyDeleteEmma is also still in town AND the Sheriff. Snow White is making out with Prince Charming. Cinderella has her baby and her boyfriend. Hopper threatened her where it hurt.
ReplyDeleteRegina's only really won once and that's when she killed Graham.
ReplyDeleteOh Grimm has issues of its own, don't get me wrong! XD
ReplyDeleteI just like the mythology and the tone of the show more. It has a darker edge to it and is not as "Disney-fied".
Another outstanding episode. Great to see more of the evil queen's back story.
ReplyDeleteThe worst episode of the season, by far. Once Upon A Time's extremely uneven and inconsistent writing makes it very frustrating to be a viewer sometimes.
ReplyDelete- What happened to Emma's "superpower?" She should have known Sidney was playing her.
Again it made me fall for Regina and feel empathy for her and again it turned out to be a trick. Damn
ReplyDeleteHa!
ReplyDeleteI had not considered checking writing credits in order to prepare myself for further disasters from said writer... I like it!
I watched Grimm for a few episodes. I really wanted to like that show. I think the mythology is really creative, but the episodes I saw didn't have any arc to really tie them all together, and I lost interest. Is it doing any better in this aspect, or is it still almost completely episodic?
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with all of this. While I was watching, I just kept thinking.....How did so many people involved in this production put so many hours into making this episode, without any of them noticing it had gone horribly wrong? I miss the old Emma. It's only the middle of the first season, you'd think they'd be able to keep a character consistent for that long.
ReplyDeleteFinding out the writer is a great idea.
Not really, no. It is still VERY short on overarching story.
ReplyDeleteThat's one of my issues with that show too.
ReplyDeleteIt's getting really frustrating watching Emma get dumber and dumber every episode. I like the fairy tale parts, but Storybrook scenes are repetitive and boring. And lately Emma and Snow have both been extremely unlikable, and the more entitled and dramatic they behave, the less I like them.
ReplyDeleteYeah, when you put it this way i guess you're right... She's just so evil!! I hope they make Emma realize about Sidney soon!!
ReplyDeleteA heads-up for you and anyone else who wants to keep tabs on who is writing what on Once Upon A Time, "Fruit of the Poisonous Tree" was written by (according to the press release)...
ReplyDeleteIan Goldberg & Andrew Chambliss.
I will definitely be paying more attention to who is writing the episodes on this show from now on.
Thank you for finding that out! They also wrote The Shepherd, I think. Which was better, but still not the strongest episode. I'm just glad that it wasn't Jane Espensen. Her cred remains intact.
ReplyDeleteEspenson wrote a handful of Torchwood: Miracle Day episodes so she's lost a few points with me.
ReplyDeleteRegina fool Emma once again. Emma must step to the game!
ReplyDeleteThat's too bad.
ReplyDeleteDid she? I never really got into Torchwood, but I've heard those episodes weren't exactly state of the line.
ReplyDeleteIT makes PERFECT sense to me!
ReplyDeleteI think it needs the serial element badly too. That's why I don't see myself watching Grimm more than this season and maybe a few of Season 2 to see if they expand it to include the larger picture or the overarching story. Otherwise I will lose interest I'm pretty sure.
Okay, I took Emma seriously when she said her super power was to detect lies people told (maybe it only works on children).
ReplyDeleteBecause evil doesn't have to fight fair, my dear
ReplyDeletemaybe good is on the losing side because Snow and Charming are being bad in the real world
ReplyDeleteDarquemode, I can't believe you like Grimm more than this show!
ReplyDeleteI love LOST, but this is no LOST. Period.
ReplyDeleteThat may be a good thing to some people I guess, but it's a very bad thing to me.
