I like the way Marty is playing and using even racist reflexes from his client to win his business deal. I haven't read the book but I like how this show is so politically incorrect. And I love Kristen Bell and Don Cheadle here.
This episode seems too early in the season: I still don't feel invested in the characters, curious in the 'overhearing some dramatic gossip between the people sitting behind you on the bus' way (hope that makes sense!), but not involved with their lives. These also just look like Marty in a sticky situation and he turns it around for his own advantage, which is all that the show has been so far. The side characters are mostly interesting, but just not loving the show. Last episode to hook me....
Not to mention whatever improvements that were there post-pilot wax and wane with absolutely no consistency. It's infuriating. As optimistic as I tried to be on this one it was pretty much all for not. I'm disappointed. Although, even with the low-brow scatological humour and SERIOUS lack of quality writing, if a mediocre Cheadle show is Showtime's worst scripted series it could be a lot worse.
I'm curious Bruce, How did you watch this episode? I watched it myself but not on showtime hence I'm not sure why everywhere it's been announced as next week's episode- are they airing two episodes a week now or what?
All of that said, I might tune back in next season. I mean, surely they can't be completely oblivious to all of the critiques and just leave it as the hot mess it is? Call me overly optimistic, but I would think given the talent working on the show they might try to fix it up to avoid having to trash it... Just a thought. But please, chime in if you think I'm wrong here. I'm interested in hearing how Showtime could rationalize leaving it as is for next season- because even though it might be hard to get critics to give it another shot, viewers even, surely they'd prefer trying to just letting it ooze metaphorical fecal matter all over their sundays indefinitely... Right?
Yeah, I watched it online too. Well, if I'm bored enough to put myself through any future episodes, I'll let you know if it gets any better. I doubt it will, certainly not before next season anyways... Did Hung get bad reviews? I think I made it through five minutes of the pilot but I don't remember reading any reviews one way or the other... I think the only positive press House of Lies has received has been regarding the gender neutral character of Rosco. Hopefully that does something, but you're right. I should brace myself for more scat and less funny. Bah!
Hung always had mixed reviews at best. If you do get back around to watching House of Lies, I would appreciate your thoughts about any improvement or the lack there of. Thanks.
The funny thing is I read the book ages ago and really enjoyed it. So it wasn't as though the material they had to work with was bad- and as you said the cast is pretty great,,, I guess I can kind of understand that having a character as unabashed and so abrasive and the fact that he's a pretty contemporary figure and voice- might throw off writers in terms of writing content and creating a setting and cast of co-characters that mesh well with the character of Kihn. I can also see how it could lead to some bumps in the development road when it comes to making him likable. However, neither of those are the principal issues and while there are some flaws in those ares you barely notice because there are so many issues in the general content and dialogue and plot and gah.... The degrees of mismanagement and missed opportunities are pretty shocking. And, the book really was an ideal source material for a showtime series, and the anti-hero figure that showtime is kind of infamous for...
So perhaps that plays into my disappointment. But, seeing as there's nothing on apart from this and shameless I'll more than likely tune in. I'll keep you posted. Now I have an excuse to put myself through the torture of another episode.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.

ReplyDeleteI just watched this episode and I am officially out. This show hasn't improved enough from the pilot to encourage me to stick with it.

I watched the episode via the internet so I'm not sure how Showtime is scheduling the program.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with your assessment of the program. It's a shame that such a great cast has been wasted like this.

ReplyDeleteDon't be so sure about the oblivious nature. I had the same thought about Hung but it never got any better and then it was canceled.
