Grey's Anatomy - Episode 8.12 - Hope for the Hopeless - Review

Jan 30, 2012

Spoiler Alert: I don’t normally refer to future episodes in my reviews; usually let them stand on their own without reference to spoilers. This week I’ve made an exception. So out of courtesy please take this as a warning that the article below contains information relating to a future episode. This is an exception, don’t get used to it!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Ahhhhhh. Do you hear that? THAT is the sound of an enormous sigh of relief. Yes. Grey’s is business as usual, normal service has resumed and no one is more pleased than I. How satisfying that Shonda and her team deliver an excellent episode to take us through the mini hiatus. I call it vintage Grey’s, where every piece of what makes this show brilliant and every reason there should be a season 9, was in place. Who needs February sweeps, alternative universes, babies? All they need to do is write strong interwoven, character driven stories, consistently well and fabulously acted. This was “Hope for the Hopeless”.

(Okay, babies help)

Meredith needs to choose her specialty, except she’s burdened by parental brilliance and dwarfed by the size of expectation standing over her. And EVERYONE’S got an opinion on it (somehow when I wrote that last sentence I had Bailey’s voice in my head saying it  - hey ho). This arc is better than the “who will be chief resident” storyline, because it tells us more about Meredith as a doctor in herself, rather than compared to the others. Lexie has bagsed Derek as a mentor in neuro – and what an inspired partnership that’s turning out to be. And clearly cardio will never be allowed to feature. So the current favourite is general, her mother’s specialty. The strength of this story lies in the consistency of writing the complex relationship Meredith had with her mother, because it’s really written as if she is still alive and hovering over her shoulder. Wherever Meredith is we know her mother is in the room with her.  She’s scared she’s like her mother. She’s not. Webber knows it. With so much information available for the forthcoming AU episode it’s easy to see the build up of storyline in “Hope for the Hopeless” to take us into what we are led to believe is a dream sequence in “If/Then”. Ellis is with Richard, she’s chief of surgery, ruling the ship with an iron fist, and as a consequence Meredith, is a very different individual. We know the influence her mother has on her as a dead woman, we will get to explore the influence she would have had, had she lived.

Of course the AU episode will also offer us the opportunity of respite from the emotional turmoil that erupted when the enormous elephant, that’s been cowering in the corner for half a season, started stomping around in the room, in the form of the marriage secrets of Owen and Cristina. Regular readers of this blog will know I am no fan of Owen. But this week we saw something of the pain this man is carrying around with him, and the ignorance of his wife to that pain. It is one thing when your wife aborts your child, but it is surely driving the knife further in if she is oblivious to your feelings about it. And unfortunately here, Cristina is guilty. I love the direct confrontation with the use of such a violent word as “killed” in the context of a baby followed by a shot of Zola. The acting was outstanding. And the editing - interwoven with every other doctor, the close up of Zola - was inspired.

Did anyone else notice the parallel in this story to Derek and Cristina in Season 7. We all know Grey’s has it’s patterns, and as a huge fan of that story arc I love how Cristina’s relationship with Teddy has become so beautifully protective, just like Derek became of Cristina. One question though? Where is Arizona? I thought she was good friends with Teddy? Shouldn’t she be providing copious quantities of widow casserole? Whilst I’ve always liked that these two characters have been close, the execution of this friendship is consistently very weak.

Now, before I move onto other things, one word about Owen...
For those who think I’m changing my mind about Owen, you should be aware of two things a. three and a half seasons of suspect behaviour, (in my opinion only, no flamers please), cannot be explained by an abortion in the current season and b. reasons are not excuses.

Speaking of Lexie (well I was earlier), the usual dose of patient heartbreak was layered on thick as she was tested to the limit of patient and parent confidentiality. If there’s one thing that Grey’s does well, it chooses cute kids, and him with the deadly tumour on his spine certainly is a heartbreaker in more ways than. I like Lexie working with Derek. It is uncomplicated with very natural chemistry, where Meredith working with Derek is almost incestuously complicated.

Even more pain arrived the moment Adele arrived at the hospital and started singing My Funny Valentine with Richard. What a beautiful scene. Loretta Devine. Just brilliant. Every time she appears. (Click to read about her award winning performance). Adele appearing forced Richard to put his 10,000th surgery into perspective and Meredith being there to help complete a lovely moment between the three of them in the OR.

As is usual of the very best episodes, there were important moments with the other characters moving things along. One which gives much satisfaction is the interaction between Arizona, Callie and Mark. If you ignore the schoolgirl giggling, the layer beneath tells us a lot. Firstly yay! Season 6 Calzona is back, flirtatious, happy, stable, enjoying themselves. Secondly yay! Season 5 & 6 Mark is back too. The mature Mark, who wants a family in his future. Then we’ve got other things going on...
A recognition, notably from Arizona, that Mark’s getting a taste of his own medicine...
A recognition by Mark, that his track record of working at light speed speaks for itself.
A recognition by Callie that Lexie still lurks in Mark. Honey, that ship hasn’t sailed!

Elsewhere, Meredith’s lodgers are getting itchy feet, (some might say, not before time!), as Jackson, April and Alex make steps to move out. Surely they’d be better buying Meredith’s house...or maybe Meredith will give it to Lexie? Who knows, this MerDer house is taking a while to build. Still, one mystery is looking clearer by the episode – April sure does want in Alex’s pants (sorry, too crude?).
For me, this episode was so much better than the season 7 finale or the mid season 8 hiatus finale. This was Grey’s. Great writing, acting, directing and editing. Humour. Happiness. Heartbreak. All wrapped up together.

Highlights and questions!
Meredith is the only 5th year who doesn’t know her specialism – what about April?
I'm usually not one to comment on the actors personally but this is just screaming to be mentioned: Eric Dane is looking mighty fine - really healthy after his adventures last year. Great to see.
Hands up if you’re secretly hoping things work out between Mark and Julia?

The writing was soooooo good this week:
Doesn’t Sara Ramirez have great comic timing and expressions.
“That ship has sailed...and sank"
Arizona - love the fact that she has a sense of humour!
“funny, coming from you!"
Cristina seems to always get the great lines. Sandra Oh must love getting her script:
“Teddy’s boundless grief is...one of the best things that’s ever happened to me”
“Yes, cardio’s mine”
“...said the lame mediocre grandson of harper avery..."
“Her husband’s dead, she’s taking it out on you, you just gotta deal with it”
“You have no idea what’s going on here do you?....You let me operate on her husband and now he’s dead. She gets whatever she wants. Do you understand? Anything she wants from me. Ever"
And finally...the elephant in the room - Owen and Cristina.
“We live like you want, how you want, you get whatever you want. All the time... It was not one surgery, do you hear me? This was every choice we’ve made in the last...this was a life that I envisioned for myself. Okay. This is not one surgery.”
“...it’s over. Is it too much to ask if we just forget it?”
“You killed our baby. You don’t ever forget that”

  1. I loved the episode!

And Cristina needs to leave Owen because that was so uncalled for.

  3. Excellent review! this episode was so freaking damn good :) waaaay much better than the season 7 finale! and yes!!, about april, she absolutely wants to get in Karev's pants, so i think  there's still a great chance the 2 of them end up together ( assuming Izzie never comes back, at all... which i'm hoping she does).  We do need to see more of Adele and Richard, their perfomance was brilliant.
This episode reminded me of the old grey's :') they should do this kind of episodes more often.

  4. The episode was OK. I'm really losing interest in Grey's overall though

  5. I'm going to avoid the Owen bullet in general for now, and skip right to where I thought Callie and Arizona were fantastic this week.. it added some much appreciated comedy, and I felt like I was always smiling when they were on screen.

  6. I agree with much of what this review has said, except the natural chemistry with Lexie and Derek *gag* not liking it, and personally i never will.
Cris and Owen divorce court is coming, don't think marriage counselling gonna work with them two.
Actually starting to enjoy Mark and Julia as little as it is, will we see her transfer to SGMW eventually? never had a eye doc on the show :-)
Otherwise love love love this season, bring on season 9 as well.

  7. Good review as always.

BTW: Ellis is the Chief of Staff. If you watched the sneak peek on the decal beside the door into the conference room it said "Ellis Grey Chief of Staff"

  8. April is going to specialize in Trauma. It's been made clear a few times that that's the area where she excels.
    Cristina - Cardio
    Alex - Peds
    Jackson - Plastics
    April - Trauma
Meredith - I really HOPE she sticks with General surgery. Sorry MerDer fans but I hate how Derek many times looks down on Meredith and calls/treats her like a "baby". I don't want Meredith to live in her husband's shadow. I want Mer to stand on her own and shine and become the person her mother, Ellis Grey, never was. What I mean by this is that Ellis was a great General surgeon but failed as a mother and her marriage fell apart. I want Mer to be a great General surgeon but also a great mom and have a happy marriage. I want Meredith to succeed on her own merit and not be seen as a second rate surgeon working under her husband, the almighty Derek Shepherd, because that's what she'll be if she specializes in Neuro.

  9. You are so dead on wtih your take on the Lexie and Derek chemistry....they suck as a pairing....I might be the only person who's not a fan of Lexie, I find her character boring and to be honest she's takind Derek down with her.

  10. Great insights on Lexie/Derek, Meredith in General and yes Mark is looking mighty fine, I like very much too...all of the above. Mark is endearing as the father as he was in season 6. All three scenario shows maturity.
I just want to point out how good April was with Adele..she acknowledges the gravity of the situation and admits to not knowing what to do. It was very human of her character and Ms. Drew was flawless again. She does very well at being vulnerable going back to season 6 when she got fired, it was a fantastic scene. If I am on the Crowen ship I am aiming for the nearest lifeboat..that ship hit an iceberg in the middle of the northern Atlantic... at night and is sinking....fast. And where was Dr. Robbins? The spinal chord tumour patient was a KID after all...In my humble opinion the writers are failing her character.I am looking forward to next week, the idea of fiction within the fiction appeals to me.

  11. I agree with you about Owen, ever since he grabbed that patients jaw in episode 4. His attitude in the Season 7 finale annoyed me also. Cristina was right, you can't have half a baby. However, she does seem oblivious to his pain, completely oblivious right up until Owen yelled those horrible words at her. If she wasn't aware of his pain then she is now. I don't think they can make it, and given Owen's behaviour lately I think perhaps Cristina would be better off. Someone said in a forum recently that Owen refuses to take responsibility for his role and his decisions of the last few months. I am seriously wondering if I will ever like this character again.

I am not sure what I think of Meredith choosing General as I thought that she really loved Neuro, however maybe General would be good for her. I guess I hesitate because I can't get used to seeing Lexi in that role. I am not a huge fan of Lexi, I love her with Mark, and when she first arrived in Season 4, I guess her immaturity irks me and I cannot see her being the "Grey" in Grey's Anatomy if Ellen leaves. And Lexie with Jackson really annoyed me because as you said in numerous reviews, the writers never developed their relationship storyline or told us Jackson's story. We have been introduced to the dark side of every character on this show...pretty much..however there has been one time where I thought we were being shown Jackson's dark side and that was in Season 6 Valentines Day Massacre when he told Lexie not to be mousy. Anyway enough about Jackson, I know you don't like him and as for me, well he's hot to look at and that's about it.

Finally I have to wonder whether we are getting a season 9 or beyond. News on the cast negotiation have been very 'hush hush' Usually actors love to blab on about their careers. I can't help thinking that we are not going to be told anything until the end of this season as ABC are worried about the ratings if news comes out that certain cast members are leaving. What do think of this?

  12. It was a good old fashioned Grey's episode. But I must disagree with you about Izzie. To quote Callie...that ship has sailed and sank. I really hope they move Alex forward with April rather than dragging up his past.

  13. It's wise to avoid the Owen bullet but I hope my 'flaming' comment didn't put you off giving your opinion. I think opinions are very divided on his character and it has caused some unpleasantness in other forums.
Nice to see CA happy, I just hope they don't do the silliness too often!

  14. Hmm. I didn't mean romantic chemistry. Only that they make a good team in surgery. I agree with you about CO and Mark/Julia.
    CO marriage is over surely?
I love Mark and Lexie, but I must say I do also like Mark and Julia.

  15. you know I've always found Derek's character rather dull. He's only interesting as Meredith's beau.

  16. Thank you to those who spotted my error re Ellis. You see this is why I don't engage in 'spoilers'. I have no taste for the sneaks actually. I try to ignore them or watch them quickly. Feels to me that they always only show beginning of the episode which just seems to wind people up.

  17. Yes I remember that but it's all gone a bit quiet on the April front re her specialty.
Totally 100% agree with you on Meredith. She needs her own thing and not hang on Dereks coat tails.

  18. April - how I hope she gets a good post baby storyline.
Arizona - yes I thought the same thing, and for the previous episode, but I guess that she can't be there with every kid.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Re Cristina and Owen - previous seasons aside when it comes to the abortion issue affecting their marriage I believe both of them are culpable. It's not just Owen at fault here they both are. And it will take something monumental for this marriage to succeed.
Re Contracts/ S9. I'm not worried. I'm quite confident there will be a season 9 and that MerDer will be in it, although I suspect less of Der. SO and JC, not so confident.

  20. No worries, you didn't put me off it - I've just expressed my opinion in a few other places already, and don't feel like I have to beat it until it dies.  I'll just sit back and watch other people get yelled at now haha

  21. Fantastic review as usual dear brilliant job and what a great episode!!! I love this season, pure gold!! I cried like a baby with Adele and Richard and with the mother/boy Lexie/Derek patient.
Kinda happy I was right about Owen pressure building from the miscarriage and the explosion with Cristina!

Happy to get back Callie and Arizona season 6, what happened this week reminded me the episode when they shared the necklace for S. Valentin and they were giggling in the elevator with Bailey about Ben and Miranda's interest on him (even if I'm not ok with Bailey/Ben arc but on this I will start a long rant so I stop), they are so in love so relaxed and so close and much much more as you underlined perfectly with Mark etc "quote": - As is usual of the very best episodes, there were important moments with the other characters moving things along. One which gives much satisfaction is the interaction between Arizona, Callie and Mark. If you ignore the schoolgirl giggling, the layer beneath tells us a lot. Firstly yay! I love Lexie and I love Lexie with Mark but now I kinda love Julia too, she is stunning and very cute.

Cristina nd Teddy are great and it is perfect but I agree with you where is Arizona in Teddy's life? She is supposed to be her BFF, this relationship is misteriously missing and it is a shame....

I know it sound weird but I like the idea od Alex with April, he deserves someone and something really good, and she is amazing. But please I hope they will not make another threesome with Avery!! BIG NO NO NO....

About Meredith specialty I don't think she will go with general and I read something about her in Ortho with my Callie as her new menthor, weird but interesting.....

  22. Definitely one of my favorite episodes this season.  I must admit its reminiscent of Greys of old and i love it!!! So reminiscent they bought back the kid who was trick o treating for ears in a previous season (the kid with the tumor in this episode grown and still cute as a button)

OMG the ending wow talk about awkward but when u have to blow u have to blow and thats what Owen. For once i truly felt bad for him.  The hurt, pain and anger with those words OMG and only thing Cristina could do was stare.  But super well acted and executed down to the supporting characters reaction. This was the best scene of the night for me.

Equally moving and a close second favorite scene was Adele and Richard singing mu funny valentine.  We all know i dont cry at shows but damn it Grey's almost pulled it out of me with this.  IDK what im gonna do if Adele is gone Loretta is an exceptional and unbelievable talent I just love when she is on the show.

I think Teddy has every right to punish Owen, while it might be unprofessional at work, I can excuse it. But any longer with this I will get fed up.

Meredith will choose general not b/c its her legacy but b/c she is amazing at it.  She always has been, Meredith is to complex to focus on one part of the body.  She is not made up to be that person, I think will find this out tomorrow during the AU episode.

Brilliant interaction and screen time for Mark, Callie and Arizona "i loved it" lol

Seriously April dont sleep with Karev it is a bad idea think about what drunk Bailey said "Karev is not the boy you want to take on your maiden voyage, you want a nice boy a kind boy!!!! Karev is none of that unless ur a dying patient of his.  Run into Jacksons arms ill be fine with that.
