—Chuck, "Pilot" It's twenty minutes past ten, when the final moments of Chuck aired on television and I still find my heart in my throat, my hands shaking, and adrenaline coursing through my veins. I could pick out every scene of this two hour finale, piece by piece, and tell you what I liked or didn't like but that would be absolutely moot. But just in case you wanted to know: I loved every single second of it. Every. Single. Second. Everyone, cast and crew and writers, was on their game — and I think that these final two hours were, mostly, perfect. Once again, the penultimate episode was better than the actual finale (I think), depending on what you like, but I think that tonight's series finale proved yet again that Chris Fedak is actually the best Chuck writer. He just knows how to blend all of the elements perfectly. That's not surprising, seeing as it's his show. But sometimes I feel like he doesn't get enough credit for his talent, his skill, and his gusto (which is a formal way of saying his b*lls). That same gusto showed yet again during the final scene of Chuck: Sarah laughing and crying on the beach as Chuck tells her their love story… and then she tells him to kiss her, and they kiss, and they're on the beach together. Their story is just beginning. It's not ending, it's not just continuing, there are still so many stories to tell — and even if we might not get the chance to see it: we know. Sarah tells Chuck to trust her in the pilot because she knows the Spy World, but now Chuck has asked Sarah to trust him because he can teach her the world she doesn't know. And it was beautiful. I can see (and understand) naysayers thinking there wasn't enough closure (my sister included), but how un-Fedak and un-Chuck is that? Very. And, personally, I think there was enough closure. We could have gotten that usual series ending where everyone is just standing around waiting for it to end already, but that would have been mundane. These last two episodes still have me shaking. That, my friends, is good television — good storytelling. Sure, it would have been nice to see Chuck and Sarah kiss in their apartment, or in their house with the red door and the white picket fence, or maybe continuing to practice for future kids… but I still imagine all of those things happening. Chuck and Sarah kiss on that beach, and Sarah's memory comes back but not before she falls in love with him again (not that it would take long), and they move in and start their business, and they begin a family, and Casey comes back and Morgan and Alex are there, and Awesome and Ellie visit for Christmas… I could go on. But I think you get it. Chris Fedak doesn't write endings, he writes prologues… every, single season. And even the original series finale was Chuck and Sarah kissing, finally being together in "Chuck vs the Other Guy." Yes, it was tragic. But more so, it was heartbreaking, it was heartwarming, it was nerve-wracking, it was hilarious, and it was perfect. Sarah's Intersect story allowed us to relive the reasons (and even the moments) we fell in love with this series in the first place. Her ability to believe Chuck, to tell him her feelings (or lack thereof), to want him to kiss her, to break through the memory-wiping and begin to remember, it just proves how much of an epic love story Chuck and Sarah are. Regardless of whether or not she had her memories back, Sarah had been affected by Chuck. Nothing could change that. Fedak was able to end the series with those words he always wanted to: "Kiss me." And Chuck and Sarah aren't the only ones whose stories continue… Jeffster! takes on Germany, Big Mike gets a Subway shop in the Buy More, Ellie and Awesome save lives, Casey gets the girl, and Morgan and Alex take the next step. But as for Chuck and Sarah, sitting on that beach, having their first kiss, well… "There were no words, because we knew we'd spend the rest of our lives together." Other thoughts:
- I loved that we had this last season with an Intersectless Chuck, and I think I've expressed this in my reviews, but it made the Chuck character much more interesting. In fact, we had several episodes without mention of the Intersect at all, which were the best of this season, proving this show could have thrived without it anyway.
- All those pilot callbacks. I loved them all. And callbacks to classic Chuck stuff: water fountain, dancing, pathetic Chuck, I could go on.
- My heart is still in my throat. Counting down the last seconds and having it still be tied up in a bow (or not!!!!) had me so nervous (and anxious).
- The music was so perfect, as per usual.
- This Quinn character really upped the ante, eh? So much for just spending time with these characters until the end.
- I disagree that Sarah's growth was just regressed. She didn't change back to her season one self. She was malleable, she was willing to hear of her love story with Chuck, she talked about her feelings with Chuck, she wanted him to kiss her. And she was beginning to remember: the Wienerlicious, the porn virus, and "Sarah + Chuck." And even if you think she doesn't remember, how amazing is it that no matter what, Chuck and Sarah will still find their way to each other? They are meant to be together. How much of an epic love story is that?
- I keep adding stuff to this post because I'll never really be done explaining how much I loved this show.
- What am I going to do with myself now that this show is over?
- God? How perfect were these two hours really?
Thanks
ReplyDeleteAgree on all counts. Above all, I always want shows to be true to themselves in the big moments, and every moment of these two absolutely phenomenal hours of television was pure, distilled, CHUCK. Perfect ending to one of the best series in the history of television!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the post! I will miss Chuck so much :(
ReplyDeleteI think I just cried a little reading this review. So beautifully written. I am going to miss Chuck! :(
ReplyDeleteAgree to disagree in how the ending was wrapped up, but I respect anyone's opinions, especially an opinion that was so well written out. I enjoyed the read, and I love imagining those things you said in regards to Chuck and Sarah. I only wish we could have actually seen this instead of such ambiguity.
ReplyDeleteTHIS!!! Great and beautiful review... #goodbyechuck :'(
ReplyDeleteThese 2 final hours may have been the best of the series since the pilot. I have loved every single season of Chuck and always will, but I was never so infested into a ending from Chuck since Season 2's final. A great show that will be missed..
ReplyDeleteGreat review and I agree with you. Thanks for the post
ReplyDeletegreat review! I thought that the finale ended in a bittersweet way because there really won't be any more new episodes of Chuck :(
ReplyDeleteI didn't like a few things about the final episodes, but I think I'll shut up and just enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteNow I'm crying over your review! <3
ReplyDeleteThanks.
ReplyDeleteThank you. I love this show :(

Very nicely written. I'm glad so many fans enjoyed the ending. I did not. There were some fine elements to the finale but I really believe Chuck deserved more. Another uphill battle. Maybe that's what love is all about, but I would have liked to have left on a more positive note. Hoorah for all the other characters though.
ReplyDeleteI want to thank everyone from cast and crew of Chuck! It will be missed!
ReplyDeleteOh and I totally agree with you!
Very much agreed. I thought they did a beautiful job with the finale, and it was a testament to why I fell in love with the show in the first place. I love that it wasn't an ending, but a beginning, in every sense of the word. Everyone had a new start, even the Buy More, and I'm glad for that. Very well done.
ReplyDeleteI can see where people wouldn't think it ended positively, but I think it did. Sure, there wasn't definite closure, but I think that last scene on the beach was beautiful. Sarah showed how much she really did want to remember their life together, and as they laughed and Sarah cried through the retelling of the story, it really gave me hope that they'd be okay again someday. I think her magically getting her memory back would have been a little too deus ex machina for my taste - kind of a cheap cop-out from reality. I know there are a lot of disgruntled fans out there, but this one is pretty satisfied.
ReplyDeleteThis show is the best show ever. I just want to say thank you Chuck, and i watched every episode from here, from Croatia. Croatia loves you Chuck :)
ReplyDeleteGreat review! thank you for sharing you thoughts! :)
ReplyDeleteMaybe I'm just seeing what I want to see, I don't think it was that ambiguous.
ReplyDeleteThe simple version: When she first accepted that her past was real, she said 'I just don't feel it.' Laughing and crying on the beach looked an awful lot like 'feeling it' to me. Regardless of how quickly/slowly her memory of the events of the past 5 years were coming back, the emotional memory was there in the final scene. Plus she clearly wanted to be with him watching the final moments before the fade to black.
The long (admittedly more speculative) version: I think the emotional memory was there the whole time. She was denying it because she thought of herself purely as a spy and didn't want to give into it, a nice parallel to seasons 1-2 when she didn't want to give into her feelings for him the first time around. She spends the rest of the time battling the concept of being the spy she sees herself as vs being in love with Chuck, hence the line 'I have to go find myself.' Again a nice parallel to the first time around, when she faced the same issue. Then reconsider the final scene under the context that she does feel the emotional connection: Sarah has an 'emotional intersect' in her head, and she's unfamiliar with the emotional world, just as Chuck had the spy intersect and was unfamiliar with the spy world on that same beach in the pilot. Now Chuck comes along to help her transition into that world and 'use her intersect' the way she did for him.
I am convinced that this is the way Fedak intended it to be interpreted because I think he's a great writer, and this interpretation makes the end a beautiful piece of writing. Obviously this is only my interpretation and others of course are valid, but I choose to believe this is how it was.
A great review, and I agree. Perfect finale and the ending was great! As you say, we can imagine all those things happening. We've just seen it happen in flashbacks, and now it can happen again.
ReplyDeleteWell written review. I have to disagree though. The whole Sarah/intersect story was completely unnecessary. I felt the writer's felt pressure to create something "edgy" that they cracked and just did to Sarah what they did to Morgan already this season. It was redundant and betray's the growth of the character in my eyes. The ending also wasn't clear at all if you ask me. Very disappointed with the final season after a promising first 9 or so episodes. From the moment Chuck got kidnapped I knew where this story was going and I knew I wouldn't like it if I was right. A writer should never sacrifice character development to force an ending they feel "should" be the ending. The ending should be natural to the progression to the story and not counter-intuitive.
ReplyDeleteI agree with every single word you wrote here. Every. Single. Word. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteAgree 1000%. I don't know who these idiots are that think Sarah is not Sarah any more. Season 1 Sarah would not have asked Chuck to tell her the story or to kiss her. She would have just said a polite "thank you" to Chuck for helping her and walked off the beach.
ReplyDeleteI can't say I liked everything they did in season 5, and I'm not a fan of the Intersect being passed around, but the finale definitely worked for the situation they were in. And it was some of Zac's and Yvonne's best work. Everybody's really.
I'm sorry but this ending is horrible. They've spend so much time developing Chuck and Sarah's relationship and in the end they decided to erase Sarah's memories, I'm sorry but this is one of the most idiotic ways to end a series. Don't get me wrong I'm a big fan of Chuck but what they did was belong stupid. After 5 years Chuck is still trying to win Sarah's heart? Lame. Season 5 was the worst season of them all, I personally don't even consider season 5 as a real season, I see season 5 as deleted scenes, as a bonus, there isn't a single episode from it that I want to re-watch. It felt like season 5 was made because NBC give them a another season. They just wanted to make a little more money. For me Chuck ended at season 4, the ending of season 4 was one of the best. Chuck and Sarah married, they create there own spy team with Casey and Morgan, Morgan gets the Intersect and who knows what will happen next. That's an ending. You see in season 5's ending, everyone got a happy ending expect for the main characters, the main couple Chuck and Sarah. When Sarah told Chuck to tell her everything, she only wanted to know, remember what she said "I believe you but I don't feel it" it's very clear that she wanted to know what happened in those 5 years that she doesn't remember, she didn't want to fall in love with Chuck all over again, she just wanted to know the truth. Of course Chuck and Sarah will be together, but only because Chuck tells her that they love one another. It's not because Sarah actually wants to love him. Remember she believes him but she doesn't feel it.
ReplyDeleteThe first 2 seasons of Chuck were amazing, seasons 3 and 4 were good/great but season 5 was pathetic it deserves a 2 out of 10, it had a few good moments but the reality is that it sucked. If you like Chuck avoid season 5. The only thing that I liked in this ending was Zach's acting when he was trying to tell Sarah the truth.
