Beauty & The Beast (CW) - Details

A. How do Catherine and Vincent meet?
Well, they first meet when she’s younger. When Catherine’s mother was killed in a car-jacking (or whatever it was – Catherine’s never been convinced it was a simple car-jacking) Vincent was the one who snatched the young girl and saved her from the same fate. As the newspapers tell us, Catherine claimed ‘the beast’ saved her but nobody has laid eyes on him since.
Years later, they’ll meet again under different circumstances. Catherine is now a feisty, slightly troubled (She can’t keep a relationship; struggles with her mother’s passing) New York City cop who comes across Vincent, the beast, at an old abandoned chemical warehouse.
She’s there to speak to a man named TJ, whose car was spotted at a crime scene nights before — a young woman was poisoned. Dead. T.J isn’t there, but instead, she speaks to his ‘roomie’… who remains shrouded in shadows for the most part.
Catherine is alarmed to discover her ‘Beast’ – the one that saved her as a youngster -is the one behind the shadow. She is taken back by Vincent – once he emerges from the shadows – but despite his features, trusts him when he declares he and his friend did not hurt the girl, but only tried to help her (just as he had done numerous other times; Vincent’s become sort-of like a local ‘Batman’ to the people). At his request, Catherine promises not to let anyone know his whereabouts, let alone that he’s alive.
B. What’s Vincent’s story?
Vincent worked as a doctor at the New York University hospital – and was working On September 11, 2001 when the towers came down.
Long story short, a wounded Vincent ends up in a medical clinic where he’s injected with a DNA-changing drug. The drug turns him into an unstoppable soldier type that is used in Afghanistan. Think ‘Captain America’ or a ‘Universal Soldier’. Unfortunately, the strength and stamina comes with a price…it also changes Vincent’s look — in particular, hair sprouts hair everywhere.
When he returned from Afghanistan, looking like he is, he hid himself away- – with the help of T.J.
C. So Vincent has a ”roomie” in this one?
Vincent now lives with friend TJ and …a Wii and an endless supply of beer.
D. Catherine has a ‘bestie’ too
Catherine has an “Evan”. Catherine’s medical examiner friend, in his 30′s like her, who is also secretly in love with the young cop, helps out on the cases. He comes to the conclusion that the girls found dead of late weren’t strangled but slipped some kind of poison.
(Oh, and no Evan’s got no chance in hell of scoring with Catherine.
She’s into jerks – as we learn in the first few minutes of the pilot when she has a bust-up with her latest deadhead squeeze, Jake. She has him arrested – for the pot he’s carrying – as revenge for treating her like dirt. Got some gonads this girl!)
E. Who does Catherine live with?
Her younger sister Heather. She’s got issues, but not as many as older sister Catherine who she thinks is going a little loopy. If she’s not dating jerks, Catherine’s still yammering on about the murder of their mother – nine years ago. They talk to their father, but he’s getting married again; neither are much excited about the prospect of attending the upcoming engagement party.
F. Does Vincent save ‘grown-up’ Catherine, too?
Sure does. Patches her up, too – after a bout with the ‘poisoner’. It’s then, while being looked after at Vincent and T.J’s, that Catherine learns more about her beastly pal — his determination to find a cure to his illness (he has science equipment all over his room; much like Bruce Banner would), that he may have actually known her mother.
G. How does the pilot wrap?
With a killer found.
And two unlikely friends – or rather, lost souls coming together.
Vincent helps Catherine feel better about her mothers death, and Catherine returns the favour by recognizing what a special person he is by going out at night and helping innocent people in trouble.
As an Adele song (Somebody Like You) plays, we watch as Catherine wanders into her fathers engagement party. She’s feeling alone, out of place, and unenthused. We all know where she belongs, right? And with whom?
Conclusion
How many episodes will it take for the young copper to own up to her feelings to Vincent though?
Whatever the case, classy, fun writing and a nice job at ‘hipping’ up a well-worn but always-effective tale. In some ways this reminded me less of the original “Beauty and the Beast” and more of say, a TV spin- off of Tim Burton’s “Batman” (Catherine being Vicki Vale, Vincent being the hidden-away Bruce Wayne, secret superhero) crossed with a bit of “Magnum PI”.
If it doesn’t get too bogged down in that “villain of the week” template that the pilot hints at, and concentrates more on the relationships between the key characters, then this could be one of the year’s highlights. If the actors cast as are solid as the writing team, The CW might have it’s new “Buffy” or “Smallville”.

  1. Not all teen roles, so that's a bonus!!

The 9-11 connection is becoming cliche in TV shows at this point, but I think I like the sound of this series and how they tweaked it from the original.

Casting will make a huge difference as to whether I watch this or don't watch this I'm guessing....

  2. it sounds like it could be fun of the 5 CW pilot so far (i think they will order 1->3 more)  i will check out Cult, Beauty & The Beast and Arrow. Zero interest in First Cut & The Carrie Diaries

  3. Same for me!
I always hated Sex and the City, but I worked at a bar that had a SatC night...
The tips for making Cosmos all night for crazy drunk wannabes were alright though! XD

  4. OK, not really sold on the idea of this show, but I guess I would try an episode to see if it works or not.

  5. This doesn't sound toooo bad, although i find myself measuring every aspect of it up to the original, so i'm probably a bit biased against it. I don't like that Vincent is a beast from creation not from birth, i liked that he was virtually a lion... ah well. Still sounds promising though, wonder who will be cast.

  6. Agreed, definitely pleased the roles aren't all 10 years old or something!

  7. Also, how the hell is this 'crossed with a bit of Magnum PI'? Are they hinting that Vincent is going to have an awesome moustache? I would not have a problem with that.

  8. interesting premise but I have a feeling that the CW won't do it justice and make it too teen like. I think that for the CW to grow they need to try and target people in their mid-twenties...

  9. I'm sorry, but this reads like someone wrote a draft for a fan-fiction! :-/

  10. Well CW has tried shows such as Melrose Place which was targeted for people in their mid-twenties. So I think based on this review, and if they cast the right actors in the roles this show could actually be good.

I was really skeptical about this idea because the log-line sounded SO horrible. "Beauty and the Beast with a modern procedural twist to the classic fairytale." (Um, what?!) But after this review I actually think this series might work.

  11. Ooh this sounds really interesting! Can't wait to hear who gets cast in the roles.

  12. True but I feel that nonetheless it skewed more teenagey than mid-twenties. B&B can work if they don't try and make it teenagey- that is what VD and GG are for. I do think that this has a better chance of succeeding over Cult though.

  13. This sounds really interesting! I think I would watch the pilot just to see what its all about and then go from there. However, like a lot of other people have said, casting really does make a difference.

  14. Not sold yet, but the modern take on the tale is nice to see as well as the show sounding a bit more adult than the standard CW fare.

  15. This *could* be interesting...

Though it kinda sorta sounds like Kripke's Tarzan circa 2003, and that wasn't very good....
I guess it will depend a lot on casting and further development.

In conclusion I think I'll remain cautiously optimistic...

  16. I am not completely sure about this, yet.
Maybe I will give it a try, if they actually do it...

  17. This sounds like it could be good. But it sounds to me as if it has some problems. I don´t know. Let´s see.

  18. This sounds like the best pilot of the CW's yet.  It could go in a lot of ways, hopefully not just a police procedural.  I am a bit leery though because I'm probably one of only a handful of CW viewers that watched the original.

  19. There is an original? Was it good?

  20. I think the fact that it is part police procedural is the best reason to believe this show will not be aimed at teens.  It actually sounds the most adult-oriented of all the pilots previewed for the CW.  If this show gets picked up and becomes a modest success for the CW, it could spawn more adult fare.  I would expect the promotion more to be aimed at the Once Upon a Time crowd than the Gossip Girl generation.

  21. Good? Maybe, but it was fairly fun at least...
At times it was campy and others actually pretty good..It had Ron Perlman (of Hell boy and Sons of Anarchy fame) as the Beast and Linda Hamilton (of Terminator fame) as the Beauty. It was more fantasy based with Beast looking very lion-like.http://www.batb.tv/images/batb/bb12.jpghttp://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vaSOwHXH_k4/TjmIOAtY6SI/AAAAAAAAAAA/JJrfdRHrmro/s1600/Beauty%2Band%2Bthe%2BBeast-791585.JPGhttp://spinoff.comicbookresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/beauty-and-the-beast2.jpghttp://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mHk9Iu3EFak/Tt29hQW_PuI/AAAAAAAAADc/tmV34qdWKWc/s1600/vincent1.jpghttp://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/attachment.php?attachmentid=141403&stc=1&d=1221447997

  23. I thought Adele's song was Someone Like You...

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yeah, I agree but you never know how what it goes through from the planning stage to the screen. If they keep it part police procedural and keep all the characters in their mid-twenties and sort of dial down the sexy part of it (not to focus completely on that at first) than I think that it has a shot.

Plus if they actually do some good promotion it has a great chance
