-Ratings Breakdown:
CBS dominated the overnights on this first Wednesday of December, with a 0.9 rating point advantage over second-place Fox. But Fox is the network to beat among adults 18-49 thanks to a 90-minute installment of The X Factor. Third overall was ABC, which housed the top-rated show of the evening, Modern Family, followed by NBC and, of course, The CW.
The X Factor opened the evening for Fox at a 7.0/11 from 8-9:30 p.m., with the half-hour breakdown as follows:
The X Factor (Fox)
8:00 p.m.: 6.8/11 (#1)
8:30 p.m.: 7.2/11 (#1)
9:00 p.m.: 7.1/11 (#3)
Comparably, this bested the year-ago combination of Human Target (4.0/ 6) and Hell’s Kitchen (3.8/ 6) by 79 percent.
In week two news, Fox sitcom I Hate My Teenage Daughter dipped to fourth at 9:30 p.m., with a 3.6/ 6. Comparably, that was 25 percent below its week-ago debut (4.8/ 7 on Nov. 30), with retention out of the 9 p.m. portion of The X Factor of only 51 percent. Welcome to the “losers list”!
Over at CBS, Survivor: South Pacific finished a solid second at 8 p.m. with a 6.6/11. One year earlier, the Survivor: Nicaragua edition scored a 7.2/11 on 12/08/10. Now that Cochran is officially on the jury, let’s hope his 15 minutes will be over once the season officially ends. Next on CBS was Criminal Minds, which won the 9 p.m. hour overall with a 7.7/12, followed by veteran CSI at an also first-place 7.1/12 at 10 p.m. One year earlier, failed Wednesday 10 p.m. legal drama The Defenders was similar at a 6.8/11.
Aforementioned Modern Family on ABC was king of the evening at an 8.6/13 at 9 p.m. Comparably, that built by comfortable lead-in Suburgatory (#3, 5.7/ 9) by a hefty 51 percent. And Suburgatory grew from failed year-ago occupant Better With You (4.7/ 7 on 12/08/10) by 21 percent. But sophomore Happy Endings squandered the lead-in support at 9:30 p.m. with a 4.7/ 7 (#3). Comparably, that put retention for Happy Endings out of Modern Family at just 55 percent (which is similar to year-ago occupant Cougar Town).
Earlier in the evening on ABC was underrated The Middle at a third-place 6.0/10 at 8 p.m. And capping it off was recently introduced Revenge at a second-place 5.4/ 9 at 10 p.m., which was 15 percent above Happy Endings.
Moving to NBC, Up All Night, which will move into the Thursday 9:30 p.m. half-hour on Jan. 12, finished a typical fourth at 8 p.m. with a 3.4/ 5. One year earlier, The Sing Off was notably stronger at a 4.7/ 8 on 12/08/10. Next on the Peacock net was a repeat of Up All Night (#4: 2.5/ 4 at 8:30 p.m.), followed by older-skewing Harry’s Law (#4: 5.1/ 8 at 9 p.m.), which always picks-up significant overnight steam, and long-running Law & Order: SVU (#2; 5.3/ 9).
In season-finale news, America’s Next Top Model on The CW, which will take a much needed rest, closed its lackluster season with a very distant 2.1/ 4 in the overnights at 9 p.m. One year earlier, Top Model concluded with a 3.0/ 5 on 12/01/10 at 8 p.m. Opening the night for The CW was a repeat of Top Model at a 1.0/ 2 (#5) at 8 p.m. Coming up on The CW on Wednesday is the final season of One Tree Hill on Jan. 11 at 8 p.m., followed by new non-scripted entry Remodeled.
