In her first major TV series gig, Oscar winner Jane Fonda is joining Aaron Sorkin’s upcoming HBO drama series in a recurring role. The series, set behind the scenes at a fictional cable news network, stars Jeff Daniels, Emily Mortimer, Alison Pill, John Gallagher Jr, Olivia Munn, Dev Patel, Thomas Sadoski and Sam Waterston. According to TVLine, which broke the news, Fonda will play Leona Lansing, the CEO of the cable news network’s parent company whose corporate concerns often conflict with the reporting of the news. Fonda knows a thing or two about heads of cable news networks — she was married to one, CNN founder Ted Turner.

wow, between this and the drama that Leo DiCaprio is doing HBO has a pretty imposing new drama slate
ReplyDeleteWell, the DiCaprio pilot is just in development, but HBO always has great dramas and lots of the stuff that is in development sounds pretty great.
ReplyDeleteBut they also pass on pretty great shows too like Breaking Bad or Mad Men.
The one thing I will say for HBO (and AMC for that matter) is they do not produce poor quality series!
ReplyDeleteI may not always like all of them, and some of them are not the instant classics , but I can always watch them and appreciate how well they are made. Especially compared to more than half the series on network TV!
I wish more networks would concentrate on making quality shows instead of trying to find the next "big" pop culture gimmick show that can get ratings.
Wow, another casting coup for HBO.
ReplyDeleteI've loved Jane Fonda since the mid-60s, and I like HBO--but why would a star of her magnitude tarnish her legacy with a TV series?
ReplyDeleteIf it doesn't have Ken Finkleman then it won't be as funny or original. Canadians will understand what I mean.
ReplyDeleteI think it was tarnished when she went to Viet Nam,it took many years for her to be excepted again, the people in her generation have not forgotten what she did.,
ReplyDeleteWhatever you think of the political stands she had back in the day, the fact is she's a fine actress. She won her Academy Awards during a time when many people disliked her for her politics, which makes the point that it's not her politics that matters, in terms of entertainment, it's her talent and skill as an actress. So my question stands: Why would a star of her magnitude tarnish her ENTERTAINMENT legacy with a TV series?
ReplyDeleteOne reason,money
ReplyDeleteTwo-she likes the script and possible flexibility it gives her.She has been out there on talk, and news shows touting her new dvd and talking about her bad knees, plastic surgery, etc, etc.
And it could even come down to the parts she is being offered, she is 74 year old and the parts that she once played are just not there anymore. And lastly it will be on HBO,not NBC,i don't think she would have taken the part if it was going to be on one of the big 4 networks.
Wow Jane Fonda A list liiikkkeee
