Oscar winning actress Dame Helen Mirren has revealed that she would love to appear as the 12th Doctor in BBC1's sci-fi series Doctor Who.
Mirren, 65, voiced her desire to play the first female Timelord in an interview with the Daily Star, in which she's quoted as saying: : "I would like to play the new female Doctor Who. I don't want to just be his sidekick."
Since the time-travelling Doctor was created in 1963 the Doctor has so far always regenerated into male form, however it's never been inconceivable that the Doctor could regenerate as a female.
The current Doctor, Matt Smith, has previously voiced his interest in Helen Mirren appearing in the series, however he may not have thought of her as a replacement for himself: “Helen Mirren would be great in Doctor Who,” he said. Adding “also Eric Cantona and Vincent Cassel – he would be number one actually.”
